Roller Derby
WHAT THE HECK IS GOING ON? A ROLLER DERBY FAN’S CHEAT SHEET HOW DO YOU WIN THE GAME? The team with the most points after two 30minute periods wins the game. Each period is made up of individual “jams” lasting no longer than two minutes.
HOW DO YOU SCORE POINTS? The skater with a star on her helmet is the jammer. Each team has one jammer on the track at a time. The jammer is the only skater who can score points by passing blockers on the opposing team. If jammers are not in bounds, or if they make illegal contact with opposing skaters while passing, they do not score points.
WHO ARE THE BLOCKERS? There are up to four blockers from each team on the track at one time. Together, the eight blockers make a pack. Blockers play offense by assisting their jammer while at the same time playing defense and blocking the opposing jammer.
WHY DOES ONE GIRL HAVE A STRIPE ON HER HELMET? The girl with the stripe is called the pivot. Each team has one pivot on the track at a time and if a jammer passes her helmet cover with the star to the pivot, the pivot can become the jammer by putting the star cover on her helmet. She does not retain lead jammer status, but she is able to score points where her jammer left off for the remainder of the jam.
WHY ARE SKATERS SENT TO THE PENALTY BOX? Skaters are sent to the penalty box when they have committed a penalty. The penalty time starts once the skater sits in the seat, so it is essential that she get to the penalty box quickly once she is sent. The standard time in the box is 30 seconds, but skaters can serve additional time for accruing additional penalties.
WHAT’S THE LEAD JAMMER THING THE ANNOUNCER IS TALKING ABOUT? The lead jammer is the first jammer to pass through the pack legally. The lead jammer is the only person who can call off a jam prior to the full two minutes. She calls off the jam by repeatedly placing her hands on her hips. The lead jammer is identified by a jammer ref by pointing to her with “L” shaped arms while following beside her inside the track until her first scoring pass. Sometimes, there will be no lead jammer and the jam will last the full two minutes.
LEAD JAMMER WHAT ARE THE NO-NO’S IN BLOCKING? • No back blocking • No forearms, clothes-lining or elbows • No grabbing, holding, pulling or tripping • No intentional falling in front of an opposing skater • No fighting member of The Omaha Rollergirls are a proud iation. the Women's Flat Track Derby Assoc y.

Young
Motherhood Kristen’s Story By Focus Staff
It’s a story that has become all too common. Kristen Guerra is 19 going on 20 years old. Pregnant at 16, she says, “I was extremely young and naïve.” She has four sisters and two brothers, and while they are Christians, her parents never talked about relationships. It was a taboo subject. She says she was a quiet, really good kid and that all of her friends were surprised when she was the one who was pregnant. “He did a good job of making me feel special. He said all the right things, but when I told him I was pregnant, everything changed,” she recalls. “Today, he is completely absent but luckily I have a good man that has taken on the role of her Father since she was nine months old.”
She’s not alone. In 2015, according to Douglas County Health Department statistics, there were 429 babies born to women between the ages of 15-to-19 in Douglas County and 3,113 out of 8,679 total live births were unmarried. David Drozd, the Research Coordinator for the Center of Public Affairs Research provided us data from the Omaha Metro area that shows 48.8% of Black families, 24.1% of
Hispanic families, and 14.5% of non-Hispanic Whites are living in homes led by unwed females. But David explains, “We’re seeing a lot more prevalence in cohabitating couples. Socially, there’s not as much of a stigma on single parenting. Attitudes regarding children in the womb have changed as well so there are more mothers carrying children to term.” That’s where the status quo ended. Today, Kristen is married to Josue GuerraMenjivar, who’s from El Salvador, and is currently working on his immigration status. They both work as servers at a buffet and she’s pregnant with her third child. Two out of the three are Josue’s and while they didn’t plan this latest pregnancy, he’s still excited. She feels the reason why so many people her age are avoiding marriage is, “Everything today is sex driven. Intimacy isn’t common. Everything is based on physical and there is no true love involved.” Interestingly, her Mother was pregnant at a young age as well, but married the man who she was impregnated by and they’re still together. To a large degree, this made them more understanding and supportive of her circumstances than many parents faced with the same situation. She also graduated on time from Central High School where she attended a class called Teen Parenting.
would have changed at the time, she would have stood up for herself more and not have been so passive and forgiving. Kristen plans on being more open with her children and wants them to be able to talk to her rather than approach it with, “We don’t talk about that.” She plans on keeping them busy with sports and other activities. When they get older, she’ll tell them to know the consequences, wait for marriage, and not to be too anxious to please someone.
If there was anything Kristen

Have you ever wondered about the tradition of Mother’s Day or are you a ‘go with the flow’ type of person? I like to have an understanding of what I am embracing, so allow me a moment to share some of the history behind the holiday. The festival of Mothers, a day celebrated across 46 countries (most on different dates) is traditionally a huge celebration of motherhood. It has been this way over the past 100 years, since two pioneering, American women, Julia Ward Howe and Anna Jarvis popularized the phenomenon and campaigned for the holiday of Mother’s Day, which is based on ancient Greek and Roman era traditions. Today, the majority of countries celebrate the festival (photo courtesy of Liberty and Lilac Paper/Etsy) of Mothers, Mothering Sunday or Mother’s Day (depends on what Who doesn’t mind a little sweetness country you reside in) on the second every now and then? Even though Sunday of May. Howe’s prayer and we are flooded with images and mission was a day to commemorate mothers as the unsung heroes who give to humanity in every area of their lives. Now that we know who to give homage to for the holiday, let’s focus on the special women in our lives. There is no need for me to list all of the reasons why we should be honoring mothers this May 14 (or any other day you are inspired to). It wouldn’t be Mother’s Day without the mention of all the fun gifts to recognize moms with. No matter your budget, I’ve curated gift ideas for the mothers you want to acknowledge and give thanks to. For the mama who loves to come home from work and immediately change into something comfortable or likes to lounge a bit longer on Sunday mornings, I’ve got an ideal suggestion. Lingerie Moonlight Short Pajamas are sure to be a hit. You can also find some similar styles, the thought is lounging PJs. User reviews of this style
overwhelmingly rave about how soft and comfortable they are. They come in multiple colors and they aren’t too expensive. This is one of those gifts I’d get for someone and for myself.

Jewelry can be a tricky purchase but watches are generally a safe gift when it comes to trying to cater to another person’s style. Ted Baker has some timeless designs and many that are on-trend as well. The brand made their debut in the United States in 1996 with men’s clothing. Jewelry soon followed in 2007. The brand is coveted by the fashionable types. I am sure the
clean aesthetic and price-point of the brand contributes to that. There are a variety of watches to meet the most discerning styles. No detail is missed with these watches. From playful to sporty to multi-function, Ted Baker has got it covered. You can find this particular “Dress Sport” Multifunction Leather Strap Watch at Dillard’s or
online at Nordstrom. It comes with a pink leather strap or a black one. Whatever you decide to do for Mother’s Day, don’t let the day come and go without at least making your mom, wife or whomever a great meal and having some uninterrupted time and conversation with her, if nothing else. Gifts are nice but nothing beats thoughtfulness, time and effort. To all my mothers out there, Happy Mother’s Day! Hope to see you online at www.theluxestyle.com or on Instagram @luxestyles.

We here at Herek Financial use a program that can pinpoint a person’s risk tolerance. It’s a program that allows you to input some basic data about yourself and overall investment portfolio investable assets. From here it takes the investor through a series of hypothetical questions based off their investment assets possible performance. At the end of this short questionnaire, a risk tolerance score will be given. Based off this score is how your risk tolerance is measured. The score is a number between 1 and 99. The lower the number, the more
conservative an investor a person is, and vice versa. We are also able to input a person’s current investment assets into this software and have it measure the risk tolerance of investments. For example, we can input a person’s assets that they hold in their 401K. If their 401K portfolio holdings have a risk score of 75, but the individual’s personal risk tolerance is a 45, we can determine that they are currently invested in a portfolio that is riskier than their own personal risk tolerance. Based off this info, we are able to help realign
those assets by proposing different investments or percentages into their existing 401K funds. If you would like to figure out your own risk tolerance, go to www. herekfinancial.com and take the free risk analysis. We can also help realign your portfolio to match your score.

ALS Strikes Omaha Couple – Saturday Fundraiser Planned By Eddie Torrez
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. It more commonly is known as Lou Gehrig’s disease or simply ALS. May is ALS Awareness Month. Earlier this year, one Omaha family became far too aware of ALS. That was when Brian Smith was diagnosed with the disease. “It was devastating,” Smith said of the diagnosis. “All kinds of things go through your head . . . It was tough news to take.”
Smith and his wife, Marte, talked to Focus about the new life and challenges they face, and the fundraiser planned for Saturday night at Millard North High School, their alma mater, by their high school friends. The Brian and Marte Smith Support Page has been established on Facebook. Saturday’s benefit is called Kiss My ALS, According to U.S. population studies, more than 6,000 people in this country are diagnosed with ALS each year, which breaks down to about 15 new cases a day. Around 20,000 Americans have the disease at any given time, according to estimates on the ALS Association’s website. ALS eventually proves fatal. High school sweethearts, they have two children, with the youngest set to graduate this spring. Brian will be 48 in June, and continues to work as a crew leader in the maintenance department at MUD’s Florence water treatment center. A lifetime together didn’t prepare them for this, but together they are fighting. The symptoms first showed up about a year ago when Brian began to feel week, losing strength in his arms and legs – especially on his left side.
24 Focus | May 10 - May 16 | Volume 1 Issue 20
He went to the doctor in December and when the diagnosis came in February, it wasn’t a total shock. “It was in the back of our minds. We didn’t want to think it was a possibility.” Brian Smith said. Around the time of that December doctor’s visit, the symptoms started to become more pronounced. “My muscles throughout my body, they twitch,” he said. “It’s starting to affect my speech just a little bit.” When the weather is cold, the symptoms are magnified. Brain said the couple is unaware of any family history with ALS, although a grandfather died at the age of 34 and his medical history is unknown. At a time when life really should be getting good, ALS has forced a number of changes upon their life. They still try to live as normally as possible, and have yet to make any drastic changes. Brian said he has had to slow down because he tends to more easily become fatigued. “We try to plan our events around the least amount of walking possible,” Brian said. They park close to stores and the events they attend. The Smiths avoid long flights of stairs.
Their options are few. Until recently there was only one medication that was ADA approved, with a second being cleared by the FDA on May 5. “There is no cure,” Brian acknowledged. “These are treatments.” But, “The new drug doesn’t come out until August,” Marte said. They do not know if it will be covered by insurance, and “is seems pretty costly.” The initial estimated by the ALS Association website put the cost of Radicava at $145,000 per year. It must be administered intravenously by doctors. The other approved medication, riluzole, comes with side effects and is said to prolong life only two to four months. It has been on the market for 22 years. “We have it at home,” Marte Smith said. They have not started to use it as they continue to work through their situation. Brian is being treated by a specialist at UNMC who has him trying to stay active and exercise, without overdoing it. ALS damages the body’s ability to recuperate, Brian pointed out. As for the prognosis, “This affects every person differently,” Brian said. The average life expectancy after an ALS diagnosis is two to five years, but some people live a decade and a small percentage live 20 years. “We’re just trying to live every day the best we can and to the fullest of our abilities,” Marte Smith said. “That’s for sure.” The Smiths have insurance, but from what they have learned down the road there will be things the insurance doesn’t cover. The ALS Association may help, they said, but they have no idea how much assistance there will be.
That is one reason the fundraiser is so important to the family. About 20 to 30 high school friends have been involved in planning for the food, raffles, and auction items that will be available. “We have a great network of friends and support,” Marte Smith said. “Our friends wanted to do this for us.” She does know it definitely will be a boost to their spirits, and the organizers earlier told them the hope was to raise $100,000. “We’re really not thinking about the money aspect at all,” she said. Brian called it: “Humbling , , , “It’s more than we would expect. “I’ve always been a person who relished giving more than receiving . . . “It’s unbelievable what they’re doing.” So, they continue, in their long lasting love, to fight on. “From the day of diagnosis we both said we were going to be positive about it,” Brian said. “Just praying for a miracle every day,” she said. Brian added: “We’re just putting it in the hands of God.” The Kiss My ALS fundraiser is Saturday from 6-11 p.m. in the student center at Millard North High School.

Creighton Baseball

Jake Hohensee did it again in game one by striking out ten and the Huskers, as predicted, have moved into first place by sweeping the Scarlet Knights. While Rutgers helped us with some timely errors during the series, one can’t help being proud of this group of youngsters. With game three in question, the Huskers secured the sweep with a 9th inning hit by Luis Alvarado who had gone 0-3 for the day to score Scott Schreiber in their final at-bat of the game.
Maybe they were trying to keep them in their seats. The Creighton Bluejays won the weekend series at Seton Hall, taking a pair of one-run in games in the first two before dropping the second half of Saturday’s doubleheader 1-0. A ninth-inning home run by freshman Isaac Collins, his first in a Creighton uniform, pulled out the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader, 4-3. Catcher Michael Emodi had homered to open the ninth on Friday for the 2-1 win in the series opener. Creighton (21-18, 10-3 Big East) is set to play UNO on Tuesday night at Werner Park before hosting Nebraska at TD Ameritrade Park on Wednesday in the year’s third meeting of the two. A weekend three-game nonconference series with McNeese State is slated to start on Friday.
Minus a small setback against Iowa, these guys have stepped up when they needed to and continue to improve in conference play week after week. It’s crunch time now, and Nebraska seems to have a more favorable finish in their last couple of series than the two teams now chasing them in Maryland and Minnesota. They come to Omaha on Wednesday to face the still hot Bluejays before facing Michigan State this weekend and then wrap up conference play with Penn State. Barring a total meltdown, the Huskers seem to be in great shape and ready to tune up for tournament play while also currently rated #25 in the Baseball America poll for the first time this year.
