A Salute to 30 Years of Public Service By Focus Staff
Illinois-born Don Bacon is a retired U.S. Air Force Brigadier General who now serves in the U.S. House of Representatives 2nd District representing Omaha and the surrounding area. He earned two master’s degrees - one from the University of Phoenix and a second from the National War College in Washington D.C. Rep. Bacon served with distinction while stationed everywhere from the Philippines to Iraq and from Germany to Nebraska. Bacon knows what it means to serve and he knows a thing or two about the cost of freedom. A lover of military history since his grandmother got him his first book on the subject as a young child, by 21 Bacon realized that, “God gives us particular talents and passions and that going in the military is what I wanted to do.” It was never intended to be a career, but being competitive, it gave him the drive to master every job. He had 16 of them during his career, but being a commander
was his favorite. Bacon said, “I think it’s something you have a passion or calling for. You work with a really great group of people that are selfless, plus you get to serve your country. There are many great callings - the military is one of those great callings.” Bacon served at Offutt Air force Base during the Cold War when nuclear deterrence was a huge factor. Starting off as an intelligence analyst, he eventually became an intelligence briefer for about 20 generals. Bacon recalled, “That’s where I learned how to speak and get over my fear of speaking to a crowd.”
to retire early because he wanted to, “speak up more.” Worried about our $20 trillion deficit and other pressing political issues Bacon said, “I wasn’t sure where my niche would be. I was campaigning for Lee Terry and after he lost there was no design for me to run, but over time as we tried to figure out who was going to run it became me.” He believes the best way to defend the United States is to have involved citizenry.
The congressman wasn’t afraid to answer other questions, and several were covered, with his biggest agendas being: “The military- two years in a row Bacon said the greatest challenges the of increasing the budget. I wanted to nation faces abroad today are, “We have get our military strong, and we have 16 years of war and we cut the budget to control the bureaucracy for small by about 20 percent over the last eight business and agricultures sake.” years. When asked

about his greatest achievements, Bacon said, “I try to prioritize. My family is the most important thing. My wife and I have been together for 33 years and both (of us) came from broken homes.” He continued, “To serve others as a commander. Many people focus on the leadership aspect, but I really enjoyed working with others. To achieve a goal when you’re a part of a team is so much fun. When you’re able to turn something around, raise moral, etc. it gives you a sense of personal satisfaction. I want to be man of my word and considered to be a person of conviction.”
He replied: “One-point-two million people. That’s how many people have died in wars for us. They were special and all had aspirations. I went to 10 different moms, dads, and spouses to inform them how their loved ones died... that’s when it hits a leader the cost of defending freedom. “Each had their own story to tell. The way we can honor it is to be the best citizens that we can by taking part in community service. We’re the most involved citizenry in the world.”
After ending our conversation it was back to work on the House floor. There’s Focus asked Bacon what freedom means never a dull moment when it comes to to him and what’s the cost? public service and as Bacon stated, it’s something he has a passion for.

It even is in charge of hiring “Parking Ambassadors,” or meter readers for the City of Omaha. Smith said, “Park Omaha is our actual brand, so we’re the parking division of Omaha. Republic Parking is the contractor that’s in charge of daily operations.” When Focus asked the City of Omaha Public Works department for names of the members of the Parking Advisory Committee, which according to parkomaha.com is comprised of representatives from city staff, retailers, developers and business leaders who are supposed to provide guidance on parking improvements, rates and make recommendations - we were placed on hold and then told that they couldn’t give out that information. That changed once we reached Smith. He said that policy was because no meetings have been held during the last year, but they’ll be reaching out to them again in the near future about issues such as implementing their strategic plan and economic development.
On Parking By Focus Staff In our last edition, Focus looked at a number of issues around the College World Series and how it has impacted merchants in the Old Market. While working against a tight deadline, we were unable to provide the depth we sought on the issue, so here is a followup to perhaps the most discussed issue – the public’s frustration in dealing with parking meters downtown and in the Old Market, where customers sometimes are limited to two hours at a meter or forced to find a parking lot. That includes frustrations with the city’s parking app, because some feel, including merchants, that it doesn’t meet their needs. Focus was able to reach Miranda Edmonds, Senior Account Specialist at Park Omaha, to discuss the city’s parking App, which does allow people to add time beyond the two hours allotted to them on a meter. “They are able to renew from the app,” Edmonds said. “The problem is that if
”We’re no longer supported by taxpayers,” he said. “We went from a $2 million general fund subsidy to being self-sufficient. As of 2013 we’re an enterprise fund, meaning there’s enough revenue being covered by user fees to cover expenses and the bond debt for the parking garages.” Smith told Focus the Parking Advisory Committee members are: Troy Davis- President of Old Market Business Association Holly Barrett- Executive Director, Downtown Improvement District Vic GutmanPresident, Vic Gutman and Associates Mike MoylanPrincipal, Shamrock Development Molly SkoldVice President Marketing & Communications – East Campus Realty Midtown Crossing Roger DixonMECA President & CEO Arnold ReevesSenior Vice President & CFO Omaha Performing Arts Cassie PabenMayor’s Deputy Chief of Staff/Economic Development
you reach the max time on (a two- hour meter) you’re unable to renew them. “There are different hours on the meters, two, three, four, or 10, so if you’ve reached the maximum limit on that meter the app will not allow you to renew.” Focus also learned that if the meter enforcement staff is paying attention and chalks your tire, you could receive an extended park time ticket even if you put more change in the meter after the allotted maximum time expired. Currently, nobody from the City of Omaha Public Works or Park Omaha seems to be aware of any proposal on the agenda to scale back the times on the meters. Ken Smith, the city’s parking manager said this was part of a “balanced approach” to keep people from parking from Friday until Monday. The garage at 11th and Jackson used to do about 2,000 vehicles/monthly and now is accommodating 10-11,000 per month. Interestingly, Republic Parking, based in Chattanooga Tennessee, is the managing entity of Omaha’s Parking Spaces according to parkomaha.com.

We’ll be discussing the benefits of testosterone replacement therapy given under the proper guidance of a professional in a later issue.

Ultra GHT Male Forza Carried at Jane’s Health Food Market, this is an anabolic testosterone booster that also has ingredients that are said to block estrogen production. This is important for men if you don’t want to start lactating. While I’m not sure if this alone will increase your testosterone enough for it to be an issue, I, for one, am not in favor of man boobs. One of the ingredients
that are said to block estrogen is the passion flower chrysin, which does so by reducing the amount of control estrogen has over the brain. It also contains saw palmetto, which in addition to decreasing estrogen levels is also said to prevent prostate irritation and is frequently used with pro-hormone supplements. Make sure as always to check with your physician before starting any heavy workout regimen, and hopefully this will provide you with some direction as you get lean and mean for summer! any given time. Timing the market can be challenging under the best of circumstances; wildly volatile markets can magnify the impact of making a wrong decision just as the market is about to move in an unexpected direction, either up or down. Make sure your asset allocation is appropriate before making drastic changes.
10. Look in the rear-view mirror
If you’re investing long term, sometimes it helps to take a look back and see how far you’ve come. If your portfolio is down this year, it can be easy to forget any progress you may already have made over the years. Though past performance is no guarantee of future returns, of course, the stock market’s long-term direction has historically been up. With stocks, it’s important to remember that having an investing strategy is only half the battle; the other half is being able to stick to it. Even if you’re able to avoid losses by being out of the market, will you know when to get back in? If patience has helped you build a nest egg, it just might be useful now, too.
11. Take it easy
If you feel you need to make changes in your portfolio, there are ways to do so short of a total makeover. You could test the waters by redirecting a small percentage of one asset class to another. You could put any new money into investments you feel are wellpositioned for the future, but leave the rest as is. You could set a stop-loss order to prevent an investment from falling below a certain level, or have an informal threshold below which you will not allow an investment to fall before selling. Even if you need or want to adjust your portfolio during a period of turmoil, those changes can--and probably should--happen in gradual steps. Taking gradual steps is one way to spread your risk over time, as well as over a variety of asset classes.
