New Arctic ‘Normal’
A new “report card” on how climate change is affecting the Arctic reveals that permafrost is now thawing more quickly, as polar sea ice melts at its fastest pace in 1,500 years. “2017 continued to show us we are on this deepening trend where the Arctic is a very different place than it was even a decade ago,” said NOAA arctic researcher Jeremy Mathis. He told the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union that what’s happening in the Arctic is affecting the rest of the planet. Earlier studies found that changes in Arctic sea ice and temperature can alter the jet stream -- a major influence on weather across North America, Europe and Asia. “The Arctic has traditionally been the refrigerator to the planet, but the door of the refrigerator has been left open,” Mathis said.

Aspen Clone
An explosion in the number of Utah’s mule deer is threatening the largest and possibly the oldest living organism on the planet. The Pando clone is a forest of over 47,000 quaking aspens that share a single root system and are genetically identical. The colony emerged about 80,000 years ago from a single seed. But foresters say the Pando clone is “tired” and aging because its young sprouts are being munched on by the deer, which have grown in numbers since the native wolves disappeared.
to communicate with each other, according to a new study. The U.S. environment agency NOAA says this is altering the behavior, feeding, mating and socializing of the commercially important fish. The study concludes that since the fish make sounds to attract mates and listen for predators, not hearing those signals could threaten their breeding success and survival.
Social Arachnophilia
Images of giant and scarylooking spiders posted on social media are helping scientists identify dozens of species that may never have been documented. Writing in the journal Insect Conservation and Diversity, researcher Heather Campbell, formerly of the University of Pretoria, says she made the discoveries after getting involved with a group of “massive spider nerds.” They venture
Its oldest trees, between 110 and 130 years old, aren’t being replaced by new growth because the deer find the sprouts irresistible. A study suggests fencing in young growth can protect it from the deer, and cattle that occasionally tromp on the clone’s root system.

out at night looking for southern African baboon spiders, then post their findings online. Together, Campbell and the adventurers published the Baboon Spider Atlas, which used various Facebook photos posted by the group and other curious arachnophiles. The atlas may have identified 20 to 30 new species.
Iceland Rumblings
Iceland’s dormant Skjaldbreidur volcano is showing signs of unrest, with more than 100 tremors of magnitudes up to 3.8 rattling the glacier that covers it.
The agreement began protecting 600,000 square miles of the Ross Sea effective Dec. 1. It bans commercial fishing in about 72 percent of the reserve.

Iran was hit by two tremors, with a magnitude 5.4 quake rocking the border with Iraq, where a stronger temblor last month killed at least 530 people. Earth movements were also felt in northern India’s Himalayan Jammu and Kashmir state, the Czech-Polish border region and northwest Oregon.
Skjaldbreidur is Iceland’s most dangerous volcano. It last erupted in 1727-1728.
Antarctic Refuge
The world’s largest marine reserve has just been established in Antarctica’s Ross Sea in what conservationists hail as a “watershed moment” for conservation.

College Hoops By Focus Staff Nebraska Cornhuskers
The Nebraska basketball team came so close to beating Kansas on Saturday that one might be concerned about them coming out slow against UTSA. Not so. As a matter of fact, the Huskers managed to put up more points than they’ve ever scored at Pinnacle Bank Arena, and their 104 points were the most scored since Dec. 19, 2005, against North Carolina A&T. They needed all of them as the Roadrunners looked just like their mascot on offense, running up and down the court. But, the Huskers managed to pull it out by a score of 104-94. • -James Palmer Jr. finished with a career-high 25 points, topping his previous high of 22 against UCF on Nov. 23. Palmer also reached double figures for the 12th time in 13 games • Anton Gill posted his first 20-point game, scoring a career-high 21 to best his previous high of 17 against Marist on Nov. 24 Next for the 8-5 Huskers is Delaware State on Friday followed by Stetson on the 29th. Both games are in Lincoln and neither teams should pose too much of a challenge.
over Texas-Arlington, then holding off a second-half rally by the Mavericks. The Jays (9-2) were lead by Texas native Marcus Foster’s season-high 32 points. Lots of Jays contributed as the team prepared to wrap-up the preconference play on Wednesday night when South Carolina Upstate comes to the CenturyLink Center. Creighton appears set to go 10-2 before Big East play begins. Creighton is one of four league teams in the rankings with the overall league ranking second in the power ratings. Division II Bemidji State comes to town to fill a gap in the league schedule that otherwise leaves Greg McDermott’s team with an uncomfortably long break in the middle of the Big East season.
Omaha Mavericks
Omaha (3-11) got back on track with a couple home wins - beating Arkansas State and Cornell College of Iowa - at Baxter Arena, before spending early Monday evening at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas. The Jayhawks, coming off their escape at Nebraska, basted the Mavericks 109-64 in a game played on ESPN 2. Still, it was great exposure for the upcoming UNO program, and now they can look forward to Summit League play where last year they finished a bucket short of the NCAA Tournament. But first, they host Montana State in a Thursday night rematch of the season opener.
However, as Nebraska fans know all too well, every game counts and NU cannot afford to overlook anyone as a promising season continues to unfold.
Creighton Bluejays
Creighton, back in the Top 25 in both polls, played what was expected to be one of its tougher non-conference games on Monday night, cruising to a 20-point halftime lead

Fitness Tips For The New Year! By Focus Omaha
It’s getting close to the New Year and that means it’s time for those resolutions. At the top of many of our lists is getting in shape and leading a healthy lifestyle. Focus will be helping in that journey each week as we team up with New Dawn Nutrition Owner and fitness expert Brandon Stewart.
Fitness Tips for the New Year
Set realistic goals and don’t try to do too much. Make sure to ask an expert about the fitness goals that are specific to you and your body type. New Dawn has in-body measuring and testing equipment so people that are interested can track their goals for free. It tells you your BMI (Body Mass Index), BFP (Body Fat Percentage), and can even track whether you’re properly hydrated.
20
#1 Diet
“Your bodies are made in the kitchen,” Brandon said. “We’re a social society and eating is a big part of what we do when we get together. You have to be able to stand your ground to achieve your weight loss goals and it can also be hard to resist the convenience factor because most of us have such busy lifestyles.” He added, “If you truly have goals, it takes time and effort.” That includes planning your meals for the week.
#2 Hydration
Next to diet, hydration is the most important factor in reaching your goals. A government study found that 30% of all adults and 75% of children aren’t properly hydrating. Heck, 15% of Americans were found to not even drink tap water. In 1998 Americans consumed 54 gallons of soda compared to 42 gallons of water. The bottom line is that ¾ of Americans have been found to fall short of drinking the 8-10 cups of water daily that doctors say is important to maintaining optimal health.
Focus | December 20 - January 2 | Volume 1 Issue 52
#3 Supplements
Supplements play a key role in your ability to take it to the next level. Not all supplements, however, are created for the same person. What are you looking for? Are you looking to gain muscle, or just stay fit? Are you practicing for an event? Education, when it comes to supplementation, is important and this is an area where the staff at New Dawn are pros. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and find out what’s best for you and your needs.
#4 Exercise
Since there hasn’t been a magic pill created to keep us in shape while we sit on the couch, exercise remains a must. When you’re starting a new program or fitness journey, you have to build into it. Make realistic goals and if you’re uncertain about how to get started then make sure to interview different trainers. There are a lot of great personal trainers in town, so make sure to find the one that’s best suited for you. Finding the person that has your best interest in mind is key. Nutritional advice and diet plans are available at New Dawn Nutrition, and
if you’re looking for more advice on how to get started, it’s free. Brandon wants people to know, “We’re here to help!” He said, “If we can change your lifestyle and mindset, that’s a big win for us.” That’s why their motto is, “It’s not what we do, it’s why we do it.”

PicklegrassNebraskaborn Bluegrass By Andy Roberts
Brian Gerkensmeyer has been playing music for a while, and with some of the area’s best players. On a given day you might find him playing the blues, jamming in a Grateful Dead sort of way with the Jerry Pranksters,or picking on bluegrass.
By day he works in a food distribution program for the state and three nights a week he teaches music at Blue Raven Studios. “They run about 200 students a week,” Gerkensmeyer said. Among those with whom he has shared the stage are Baby Jason and the Spankers, Ripple Effect, Magic Slim, Sean Benjamin, and Kris Lager. Most of his life Gerkensmeyer has been known as a bass player, he plays guitar in Picklegrass, his bluegrass project that is set to perform on Friday at the Down Under Lounge. Known as “Pickles” for fairly obvious reasons that also explain the band’s name, Gerkensmeyer developed an interest in playing the essentially acoustic roots music known as bluegrass in 2003. For several years he took lessons from Nebraska bluegrass guru Steven Hanson and has performed in a number of groups since then, competing four times in the National Flat pick and International Finger-style competitions.

Picklegrass is Gerkensmeyer on guitar; Thad Miller on fiddle; Matt Richardson on banjo; upright bass player Jennifer Richardson; and Brian McGovern playing mandolin. But for now, let’s take a look at “Pickles” and his musical history. He’s been at it for quite a while. “I did all the band stuff growing up,” Gerkensmeyer recalled, looking back at school bands including a jazz band at Seward High and taking piano lessons while growing up. “I studied music at UNL for two years,” he said. “Played in the jazz band and concert band.”From that formal setting he made his move into rootsier sounds. “Then I got into blues and spent quite a few years playing blues,” he recalled. “Did some road work. Then I got into bluegrass.” It was around that time that he began learning from Hanson, but that didn’t close other musical doors. The Jerry Pranksters, his Grateful Dead tribute band, have been around for 11 years. “Pickles” said he admired Jerry Garcia’s tinkering in bluegrass which helped draw his interest to that musical form. He especially likes the work Garcia did with David Grisman on the “Olds & In The Way” recording.
Bluegrass and his guitar work provide a fresh musical outlet.”I play bass in the Pranksters. Bass is kind of my main instrument by trade.” But no longer his only one, as bluegrass provides a whole new area of musical exploration. It also has a surprisingly strong following.”It’s a pretty widespread appeal. It kind of had a resurgence,” Gerkensmeyer said of bluegrass. Alison Krauss, and others, he pointed out, plus festivals, have brought about a new public awareness of the art form to the public. Gerkensmeyer also pointed to Matt Davis, a Nebraska native now based in Nashville, who is another leader in the bluegrass resurgence despite being just a teenager.”To me, bluegrass music is kind of like gymnastics,” Gerkensmeyer explained. “It’s kind of a higher art form.” He listed bluegrass, along with jazz and classical music, as art forms that require extreme dedication.”You gotta keep your chops,” he emphasized, as there are no amps or distortion to cover up mistakes. There is a simple purity and earthiness in bluegrass that are part of the appeal, he said, admitting that is pretty much a “roots music”

guy.”I am. I was in a country band for nine years,” he said. “We played a lot in western Nebraska.”It paid well, he recalled, but Gerkensmeyer doesn’t seem to miss it. Picklegrass hopes to do some recording, he said, and they currently perform a mix of traditional and original material. “We do old standards and I write a bunch of songs, too,” Gerkensmeyer stressed. The road may have to wait. “We’re all pretty busy. Touring’s not such an option.” For the uninitiated, Friday at the Down Under provides an opportunity to experience a great American art form. What should people expect? “High energy, foot-stompin’, hootena-

Sister Hazel’s Ken Block and Drew Copeland to Play Ralston Arena’s Side Room on January 4 By Howard Schwartz It going to be just like a home visit, with music. That’s what Ken Block, lead singer of alternative rock band Sister Hazel promises, when he and rhythm guitarist-singer Drew Copeland play the Ralston Arena’s Side Room on January 4. While Sister Hazel has built a reputation over more than two decades for its style the blends multiple musical genres, Block said the Ralston show promises to be a more intimate affair, and it’s something they’ve done before.
24
“We started as a duo even before there was a Sister Hazel,” Block recalled. The band’s success kept them so busy there was little time for the smaller shows, but he looks forward to stripping down the songs and having more time to tell stories and talk about the songs’ origins. “Another way to connect on a deeper level with fans,” is how Block described the shows. “There’s nothing to hide behind but the songs.” Fans will also be able to see another side of Block and Copeland, who are a fun-loving duo. “There’s a lot of laughs as well,” Block admitted, adding it’s something short of a real tour and more of a fill in when Hazel is not on the road. “Drew and I add about a half dozen of them in . . . we’re just filling them in throughout the year.” Much of the music planned for the Ralston show will have a familiar ring to it. “We do mostly stuff off the records,” Block acknowledged. “We’ve got a ton of music after being in a band for 24 years.” Both Block and Copeland have solo records, and some of that material could make it into the set. “They’re very well received,” he said There is a possibility that at some point Block and Copeland might record as a duo. “We’ve certainly talked about it,” he acknowledged. Another topic of conversation for the Gainesville, Florida-based Block and friends has been the tragic and unexpected

passing of that town’s musical legend, Tom Petty. Block is still feeling the pain of the legend’s passing. “It was an enormous shock to all of us,” Block stated. “That guy paved the way for all of us.” Block recalled “Refugee” on the radio and suddenly believing someone from where he was could make it in the music business. “It was kind of my ‘Beatles on Ed Sullivan’ moment,” he recalled. “We played the same clubs growing up, we played the same frat houses. “I don’t know that there’s been another American artist that has a complete body of work that resonates with so many people from all walks of life as Tom Petty has.” So Sister Hazel will be among those those who carry on, continuing to build on what came before them. Fans can expect to hear soon from the band. “Sister Hazel has a new EP coming out in February,” Block said, adding he expects it to be the first in a series of
four. Why an EP and not a full length recording? “We wanted to get more music out more frequently,” Block explained. “We wanted to get in while things were fresh, were still moving.” It was better for the band, he felt, than waiting to get off the road. “For us it was really answering what our fans were asking for.” The new stuff can wait, but at Ralston Arena, he said the fans will get a fresh take on some favorites. Expect all the radio cuts, he said, and some deeper cuts the Hazel Nuts (fans) want to hear, and look for it in a different setting from their arena shows. “We’ll have that place feeling right like we’re sitting in their living room,” Block said. “I promise people will walk out feeling better than when then they walked in.” For more on Sister Hazel: www.sisterhazel.com
