Favorite quote? “‘Quid pro quo.’ I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine. We’re not gonna get anywhere if we’re selfish and stomping on other people. I’ve met some of the most generous people through the art community. The world can be beautiful if we work together.” What are you currently working on? “Right now, I’ve been working on a set of commissions for Christ Community Church. Each one is 6’ by 5’6”, and they depict the four foundations of the Christian Missionary Alliance through biblical scenes.”

What inspires and influences your work the most? “People are definitely my focus right now. I love getting to meet them and tell their stories through a portrait.”
Where do you see your art in the future? Anywhere. I have no clue what style I’m gonna be painting, but whatever it is, I hope that I’m able to show it through the right venues. It’s pretty vague, but life is vague. As long as I get to paint everyday, I’m happy.”

When did you first start pursuing your art? “I was a sophomore in high school when I injured my knee; I had to slow down on the sports field, and I found out I could paint. I never imagined I’d be making art, and it wasn’t until I received my first commissions from T.D. Ameritrade that I could do it as a career. After I graduated, I got a studio in the Hot Shops, and I started making art for a living.”
Who’s the artist you admire most? “Well, there’s a few artists that come to mind. The first is Will Andersen, my good friend and fellow Hot Shops artist. He’s fantastic; he approaches his work very thoughtfully and strategically. Then there’s Cecily Brown - the way she paints is so messy but perfect. Finally, I can’t forget LeRoy Neiman. His work is colorful, and he was one of the first artists I was ever inspired by.”
What has been your favorite piece or series to create? “My new work, definitely. There’s the hyperrealism, of course, but it’s also the size that I’m loving; my last one was 6”6’ by 4’. I build all the canvases from scratch, I put all my love and affection into them - these are what I love to do.”
What’s your advice to an aspiring artist? “Find somebody who inspires you, whether they be an artist in your own field or another. School is good, but you don’t need to go to college for art; you can make it happen either way. In short, be an apprentice. Immerse yourself in the art world and study JIMI

From the Vans Warped Tour to Gen-X By Howard Schwartz
Sometimes billed as post-hardcore “I guess the best way to put it would be metalcore,” lead singer Sean Sorensen said of the band’s sound. Slipknot and Underoath are influences and sonic reference points.
Sorensen is joined in Devil in the Details by Aaron Koenig on guitar and These guys are going to explode off the vocals, plus a variety of pre-recorded stage at the Gen-X tour in Ralston on sounds, and drummer Matt Lund. to the mix but have worked nonstop to develop their act. Lund came to them as a bit of a surprise, but ready to play as a 15-yearold. Sorensen recalled they discovered him through a Facebook ad. “He was just insane,” Sorensen said. Also, somewhat less insane, is the lack of a bass player. The band previously worked with one and Sorensen said, “We definitely want to add a bassist . . . We just want to find the right one.” For now: “We just backtrack it.” But the founding of the band came naturally. Sorensen and the now-former bass player got together with the other guys and, “We just started jamming . . . We decided to come out as a band in January of 2014.” One of their highlights came early as they first broke on the scene. “Our first show – it was just a dollar show,” Sorensen recalled. Devil in the Details nearly sold out the Sokol Underground and the newly minted fans went wild – there was even crowd surfing. Then, as with any fledgling outfit, there are the crazy band stories as they launched their journey. “I could go on for days about those,” Sorensen offered. One of the first, and most painful, was on an early trip to the West Coast when their van broke
down in Arizona. Sorensen remembers it simply blew up and after driving around town, they had to leave it there. The detail that bedeviled them at that point was Devil in the Details had to rent a truck, travel to California for more gigging and then come back to Omaha but still pay off the van. Not a great way to financially launch the career. Devil in the Details has been involved with the Vans Warped Tour in 2016 and again this year. Sorensen was around the tour for work – he has a multi-media company Inspired Film Studios where he is a graphic artist, photographer and videographer – and they sold about 2,000 copies of the first Devil in the Details album. They got on the Kansas City show then and returned for the KC show this year. The Vans Warped Tour provided great exposure. The band’s name goes on a giant balloon at the event and “We had a good turnout.” Sorensen did, however, suffer a rock ‘n’ roll injury when he sprained a foot on a cable. “I had to jump around the rest of the show,” he recalled. Kansas City has proven to be a good market for Devil in the Details. “It’s like our second home . . . we’ve played tons of shows there,” Sorensen acknowledged.

Devil in the Details hasn’t played an Omaha show since a May tour-launching gig with Wolfskin at The Waiting Room. He is planning a mix of old songs and music from their recent EP, Hello Depression, for their planned performance at the Generation X concert in September. “We plan on playing like we always do, for the passion” Sorensen stressed. “Just rocking really hard.” It should be a highlight of the day and a must-see as not other Omaha shows are scheduled although Sorensen is keeping his options open if the right opportunity is presented.

banging up against an ice promontory called the Bawden ice rise. The giant iceberg, about the size of Delaware, traveled only 27 miles to the northeast before becoming trapped. Such icebergs are typically carried northward into the Atlantic by currents and wind, where they slowly melt. Scientists say the battering of the ice rise by the iceberg could erode the Bawden’s ability to stabilize the nearby Larsen C. If that Antarctic ice shelf were destabilized, it could lead to the collapse of the rest of the shelf, resulting in a significant rise in sea level.

Not a ‘Wholphin’
Researchers in Hawaii spotted a hybrid between a melon-headed whale and a roughtoothed dolphin off the island of Kauai. Confirmed through DNA analysis, it is the first such hybrid ever found in the wild. Treasury, IRS Announce Proposed Rule Regarding Increasing Depreciation Deduction to 100 percent, Helping American Businesses The U.S. Department of the Treasury and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) today announced proposed regulations on increasing and expanding the first year depreciation deduction for qualified property. This increased benefit will expand opportunities for small and mid-sized businesses to expense equipment purchases and make capital investments in their companies.
“The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is making it easier for businesses of all sizes to grow and create jobs for hardworking Americans,” said Secretary Steven T. Mnuchin. “This expensing provision will be a key driver in creating greater business investment and growth.” The TCJA expands the meaning of qualified property to include certain used depreciable property and certain film, television, or live theatrical productions. The proposed change also extends the placed-in-service date by seven years from January 1, 2021, to January 1, 2027. The deduction applies retroactively to qualified property acquired and placed in service after September 27, 2017. The first year allowance is 100 percent, and is then decreased by 20 percent annually for qualified property placed in service after December 31, 2022.
The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act (TCJA), passed into law in December 2017, increased the first year depreciation deduction from 50 to 100 percent for qualified property acquired and placed in service after September 27, 2017.
