“In March of 1965 the Selma to Montgomery march was part of a series of civil-rights protests in Alabama. On Sunday March 7th, about 600 people started a planned peaceful march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, it was called a demonstration. But, when state troopers met the demonstrators with force at the edge of the city by the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the day became known as “Bloody Sunday.” Unlike “Bloody Sunday” the exhibit will focus on Omaha youth and adults journey down south to participate in the 50th anniversary of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. The Durham Museum is honored to host the world premiere of A Life In The Wild, an exhibition containing 40 of Mangelsen’s most resonant images— images that take viewers on a journey into the haunts of iconic species whose struggles for survival are metaphorical fulcrums for reflection in the 21st century.

More employment driving surge in spending

With an extremely low unemployment rate of 3.7 percent, more people will be out shopping this year because more people have found jobs, moved from part-time to full-time jobs or taken on multiple jobs in the past year. The average American family does not necessarily have more money than last year, but more families have money this year, Goss said.

Retailers looking to ramp up hiring to keep up with the holiday rush could have a harder time getting fully staffed, Goss said. The ratio of job openings to the people out looking for them could be a source of frustration for retailers trying to fill openings, and for consumers looking for help on the sales floor or waiting in lines at the register.

fact that they can try the beers before they have to buy them because they can also purchase 32oz. Crowlers w/ any of the beer on tap to take home.

The Casual Pint By Focus Omaha Even as a youth, owner David Vannier had a taste for craft beers. So, when he and his wife Rebecca decided that their family was more important than a job and they wanted to move closer to home (they’re from CB) after 15 years of being a golf pro, it seemed like a natural choice to start a craft beer bar. There are 28 Casual Pint franchises in and around the Knoxville, TN area, but none were located anywhere near Nebraska. Since they loved to go there when they were in the area, they decided that it would be a natural choice to bring to Omaha. With 30 beers constantly rotating on tap and over 300 choices on the shelves to take home, there are very few singular locations in Omaha that can match them for bragging rights in both categories. People also love the

14

But it’s not the wide selection that separates them as much, said Vannier as the “knowledgeable, friendly staff that’s always willing to help.” For that reason, they refer to their bartenders as beertenders. The advantage of this is that you don’t have to feel intimidated if you’re not familiar with craft beers because they’re always willing to help, which may be one of the reasons why they refer to themselves as having a “coffee shop atmosphere that serves beer.” They currently have a special for the holidays called the 12 Beers of Christmas where you can buy 12 individual beers that your friend or loved one can try and unwrap each day leading up to Christmas. So, if you’re looking to buy something for someone that’s hard to please, this is sure to be a unique gift that’s well appreciated. You can also join or sign a friend up for the Brewmaster Club. For $20/month it includes a T-shirt, a stainless steel growler plus it gets filled for free once a month.

NU vs IOWA By Focus Omaha Last week a group of us were talking about the likelihood of the Huskers winning out their last two games of the season. Under normal circumstances it wouldn’t have seemed like much of a discussion, but this season victories have been far from a given. Coach Frost and company have repeatedly stated that this is a special group of players, and for the last five weeks they’ve been showing everyone why. After losing about 20 players who either left, retired or declared early for the draft and leading the nation in

penalty yards after the first five games, the rest of the season seemed like it may just be a wash. But for those who payed close attention, the improvements were being made every week. This team just never seemed to give up and after the last few players left something beautiful has happened, the Huskers are beginning to look like- well the Huskers again. This week the task was to beat Michigan State. As if facing the Spartans No. 1 ranked rushing defense wasn’t enough to make one shiver, the brutal cold and wind were going to make the day even more of a challenge. Coach Frost commented after the game about the wind being a factor, “I laid in bed last night with my fingers crossed and hands folded in prayer, hoping that we’d be able to throw it. Going into the game, I think they were giving up 270 a game in the passing game, or something, 70 yards rushing. I knew it would make it harder on us if we weren’t able to throw. We tried to come out in the first drive and just run our offense. It was pretty obvious after that, that we had to flip the script on our game plan. Again, a lot of credit to them. That’s as good of a run defense as we’re going to play, and on a day

Blood Type Diet By Focus Omaha Created by naturopath Peter J. D’Adamo, the blood type diet falls short on scientific reasoning behind the results. In 2013 a major review concluded that there was no evidence to support the benefit of a diet based on your blood type.

Type A blood:

A meat-free diet based on fruits and vegetables, beans and legumes, and whole grains -- ideally, organic and fresh, because D’Adamo says people with type A blood have a sensitive immune system.

Type B blood:

However, for those that are intrigued and like trying something different here’s the premise behind it:

Avoid corn, wheat, buckwheat, lentils, tomatoes, peanuts, and sesame seeds. Chicken is also not recommended, D’Adamo says. He encourages eating green vegetables, eggs, certain meats, and low-fat dairy.

Type O blood: A high-protein diet

Type AB blood:

heavy on lean meat, poultry, fish, and vegetables, and light on grains, beans, and dairy. D’Adamo also recommends various supplements to help with stomach troubles and other issues he says people with type O tend to have.

18

Foods to focus on include tofu, seafood, dairy, and green vegetables. He says people with type AB blood tend to have low stomach acid. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and smoked or cured meats.

Focus | November 21- November 27 | Volume 2 Issue 45

Exercise:

The Blood Type diet even goes so far as to suggest the type of exercise you should be doing in relation to your blood type including yoga or tai chi for type A’s, and jogging or biking for at least an hour a day for type O’s. Needless to say, this diet seems somewhat strange and Brandon Stewart from New Dawn Nutrition says that diets should really take your

body, not blood type into consideration and to, “just keep all things in moderation and you’ll be fine.” As with all diets, make sure to consult your physician/dietician before starting any diet. Until next week, “Stay Healthy, Omaha!”

Yesterday and Today – The Beatles Unmasked By Andy Roberts “Ya, ya, ya!” Yesterday and Today is back at the Omaha Community Playhouse. And that’s something to celebrate. The Beatles show that does away with wigs, costumes and fake accents, with a focus on playing the music as well as they possibly – and takes requests with stories about the fan’s memories, returns November 29th and continues until New Year’s Eve. For those keeping score at home, it’s the tenth consecutive year.

Yesterday and Today is the creation of Billy McGuigan, and actor and musician who grew up as an Air Force brat. He’s also responsible for Rock Twist – where he takes rock songs and performs them in other genres and vice versa – Rave On! The Buddy Holly Experience, and the U2 tribute The Gary Powers Four. As a military family they moved to Germany in the early 1980s. Without TV they spent their time listening to and learning the records. McGuigan’s Beatles’ introduction: “It came through our dad . . . he was always known as ‘The Beatles guy.’” The passion became stronger when his uncle introduced him to The

White Album – his favorite era of the band. “That was like the first record I remember my uncle saying . . . ‘You gotta listen to The White Album. It’s totally different Beatles.” Yesterday and Today has long been in the works. “I always knew I wanted to do a Beatles show of some type,” McGuigan recalled “I probably started to do that the second I started acting.” After McGuigan was cast in and helped develop Rave On, producers asked what else he had. Of course, despite the many existing tributes to The Fab Four, The Beatles came to mind. This time it would be done without the many stage trapping often associated with such shows. So they started playing the songs the best they could, and then he came up with the idea of having people request their favorite songs with an added touch. “If I could get people to tell their stories at the shows we’d really have something,” he recalled thinking. The lack of costumes kind of “disarms people,” McGuigan said. “Wait, which one is John.” After a few songs the band explains it to the crowd. “Everybody Comes Together – pun intended,” he chuckled. Playing such beloved material comes with some choices for the band. McGuigan said they try to find the line between 100 percent accuracy to the records and bringing something of their own to the performance – including on many songs The Beatles never played live. “If you’re not doing ‘She Loves You’ just like the record, then what’s the point,” he suggested.

Touring with a band – they’re on the road about six months a year and recently headlined Las Vegas - does bring about some changes to the show. And what a band! McGuigan’s brothers Matthew and Ryan are joined by Jay Hanson, who has been in the band since the beginning, drummer Rich Miller, and Tara Vaughan does all the “super-high harmonies” and the orchestral work For those who’ve seen Yesterday and Today before, McGuigan assures: “We’re always changing it . . . We find new tricks . . . we’ll always bring new elements to the show.” They’re not stopping in the foreseeable future as McGuigan said the tour scheduled keeps getting busier. This is not the end of their Playhouse run, either. “We’re at The Playhouse for the next three years. Who knows what happens beyond that.” Still, you’re best to go find out what happens this year. An old hand on the road, Bashian said it’s hard to come up with a favorite tour story. He finds it interesting that so many celebrities come to see the show and the cast. One of the best memories comes from an extended tour stop in Los Angeles where he rented a home from Dennis O’Hare of American Horror Story fame. O’Hare showed up for a party at the house hosted by Bashian and they ended up going to breakfast. For many fans this is not their first exposure to the show, so why see Phantom again?

A disfigured musical genius known only as “The Phantom” haunts an opera house By Howard Schwartz – usually in Paris but at least once moved to London – is mesmerized by Romance, jealousy, betrayal and some memorable music – all part of the recipe a beautiful young soprano. It’s not just another “Night at the Opera,” as there is the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. It is celebrating 30 years on Broadway and has won more than 70 major theater awards including seven Tonys and four Olivier Awards including one for best musical. Adam Bashian is back with the company following a year and a half absence after helping launch this production in 2013. “I was covering nine different roles,” he recalled of his first time on the tour. There also were some added offstage duties and you may have seen him in House of Cards on Netflix. Between tours Bashain landed a role on Broadway in the production of In Transit. He told Focus he now plays Don Attilio, a cuckolded husband who comes on during the second opera within the play who sings “a very low note.”

“I think that Phantom is just firing on all cylinders,” Bashian said. There also is the spectacle of the show. “There’s nothing better than Phantom’s spectacle.” The show also has a real emotional impact, he offered, and, “Nothing is done for the sake of glamour.” The Phantom of the Opera tells a story of betrayal everyone can relate to, Bashian emphasized, and that includes the Phantom’s suffering. He noted a younger generation of fans is starting to turn up for the show and Phantom is developing a new group of followers. “It’s a super relatable story . . . . there’s usually not a dry eye in the house,” Bashian offered. “I think it’s amazing . . . Take a deep breath – prepare to be dazzled.” For more on The Phantom of the Opera and Omaha Performing Arts: https://omahaperformingarts.org/

The Treasury Department has also published advisories to U.S. financial institutions on human rights abuses enabled by corrupt senior foreign political figures and their financial facilitators that can be found here, as well as advisories related to some of the programs listed above, which can be found here. This Administration says that it will continue to take action against human rights abuse and corruption-related targets around the globe, including implementing sanctions under Global Magnitsky and other authorities.
