Don’t Eat that Cookie Dough! By Focus Omaha There are many special occasions through the year that are perfect to spend time with loved ones while preparing delicious baked foods in the kitchen. Follow these safety tips to help you and your loved ones stay healthy when handling raw dough.
In addition, raw eggs that are used to make raw dough or batter can contain a germ called Salmonella that can make you sick if the eggs are eaten raw or lightly cooked. Eggs are safe to eat when cooked and handled properly.
Follow safe food handling practices when you are baking and cooking with flour and other raw ingredients: •
• Flour and eggs in raw cookie dough can make people sick, the CDC warns. (CDC)
•
When you prepare homemade cookie dough, cake mixes, or even bread, you may be tempted to taste a bite before • it is fully cooked. But steer clear of this temptation—eating or tasting unbaked products that are intended to be cooked, such as dough or batter, • can make you sick. Children can get sick from handling or eating raw dough • used for crafts or play clay, too. Raw Dough Can Contain Bacteria That Cause Disease Flour is typically a raw agricultural product. This means it hasn’t been treated to kill germs like Escherichia coli (E. coli). Harmful germs can contaminate grain while it’s still in the field or at other steps as flour is produced. The bacteria are killed when food made with flour is cooked. This is why you should never taste or eat raw dough or batter—whether made from recalled flour or any other flour. In 2016, an outbreak of E. coli infections linked to raw flour made 63 people sick. Flour products have long shelf

Do not taste or eat any raw dough or batter, whether for cookies, tortillas, pizza, biscuits, pancakes, or crafts made with raw flour, such as homemade play dough or holiday ornaments. Do not let children play with or eat raw dough, including dough for crafts. Bake or cook raw dough and batter, such as cookie dough and cake mix, before eating. Follow the recipe or package directions for cooking or baking at the proper temperature and for the specified time. Do not make milkshakes with products that contain raw flour, such as cake mix. Do not use raw, homemade cookie dough in ice cream. -Cookie dough ice cream sold in stores contains dough that has been treated to kill harmful bacteria. Keep raw foods such as flour or eggs separate from ready-to eatfoods. Because flour is a powder, it can spread easily. Follow label directions to refrigerate products containing raw dough or eggs until they are cooked. Clean up thoroughly after handling flour, eggs, or raw dough: Wash your hands with running water and soap after handling flour, raw eggs, or any surfaces

• Is recalled flour in your kitchen? In 2016, a large outbreak of E. coli infections made people sick in 24 states. Disease detectives linked the illnesses to flour sold under several brand names, including Gold Medal, Gold Medal Wondra, and Signature Kitchens. This flour, and baking mixes and other foods containing this flour, were recalled. Check your pantry and throw away any recalled products. If you stored flour in a container and no longer have the package, throw out the flour to be safe. Make sure that you clean your container with warm, soapy water before using it again.

However, some people develop a serious type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). The symptoms of Salmonella infections typically appear 6 to 48 hours after eating a contaminated food, though this period is sometimes longer. Symptoms typically include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. In most cases, illness lasts 4 to 7 days and people recover without antibiotics. Illness from Salmonella bacteria can be serious and is more dangerous for older adults, infants, and people with weakened immune systems.

Nebraska Basketball By Focus Omaha Seven years is a long draught. But the Husker basketball team ended it with a huge exclamation point and making a statement to the, at least on this day, Bluebirds- I mean Bluejays. The Huskers were lead right away and early by two 3-pointers by F James Palmer, Jr. and Nebraska just kept pouring it on. Creighton didn’t have an answer for the Huskers and was taken out of this one early. The Huskers have tended to allow opponents back into games in the second half, but not on this day and not on their home court which they’ve owned since the Kansas game last year. Here are just a few streaks and stats from the game: -Nebraska’s 94 points marked the third-most points it has scored in 52 all-time meetings with Creighton. The only times the Huskers have scored
20
more points were 100 points on Dec. 10, 1992 and 97 points on Dec. 6, 1990. -The Huskers’ 19-point margin of victory tied for the third-largest margin of victory for NU-Creighton series and was the largest since a 71-52 win on Jan. 8, 1997. -Nebraska extended its home winning streak to 17 straight games, with 12 of those victories by double digits. The 17-game streak marks the Huskers’ longest home winning streak since a school-record 20-game streak spanning the 1965-66 and 1966-67 seasons. Nebraska is 6-0 at Pinnacle Bank Arena this season, winning every game by at least 15 points. -Nebraska hit 14 3-pointers in the game, one shy of its season high of 15 in the opener against Mississippi Valley State. Today marked the third time this season that Nebraska hit at least 10 3-pointers. -The Huskers hit 14-of-27 from beyond the arc, shooting a season-high 51.9 percent from the 3-point line.
Focus | - December 12- December18 | Volume 2 Issue 48
-All five Husker starters scored in double figures, marking the second time this season Nebraska has accomplished that feat (also against Southeastern Louisiana. Nebraska’s starters combined to go 29-for-51 (56.8 percent) from the field, including 13of-24 (54.1) from 3-point range, while scoring 87 of the Huskers’ 94 points.
-Palmer hit a career-high six 3-pointers today, eclipsing his previous career high of five 3-pointers at Ohio State on Jan. 22, 2018 and at Virginia Tech during the 2014-15 season. Palmer finished 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and was 9-of-12 from the field and a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line.
-James Palmer Jr. had a season-high 30 points, his second career 30-point effort. With his 30 points, Palmer went over 1,000 career points in today’s game and now has been in double figures in 40 of 43 career games at Nebraska. Palmer’s two highest scoring games of the season have come against Big East teams, as he scored a then-season-high 29 points on Nov. 14 against Seton Hall.
-Thomas Allen scored a career-high 18 points, topping his previous best of 14 against Delaware State on Dec. 22, 2017. The Huskers face Oklahoma State on Sunday at 6pm on the Husker Sports Network and on BTN.

These Apes Will Make You Scratch Your Head By Focus Omaha
Folk, pop, and funk aren’t words that are commonly used to describe a band, but that’s what you’re going to get when you come to the Lookout Lounge on Friday night to hear Lancaster, PAbased Apes of the State. The band consist of Dan Ebersole on the mandolin/guitar, Mollie Swartz on the violin, and April Hartman on the guitar/lead vocals. Lead singer April (Apes) Hartman started playing music again to help her through her recovery from drug addiction. In an industry that’s riddled with addiction issues, it’s sobering to hear a band that sucks you in with their sheer simplicity and a complete lack of fear when it comes to expressing themselves lyrically.

Nuts and Bolts: How to Roll Over Your Employer Retirement Plan Assets By Focus Omaha
401(k), 403(b), or governmental 457(b) plan that’s eligible for rollover, you’ll receive a statement describing the tax rules applicable to your distribution and your rollover options. You should read that statement carefully. 1. Direct rollover to a new employer’s plan: • Review your existing plans distribution form for instructions on completing a direct rollover to another employer retirement plan. • Contact the new plan’s administrator and ask what it requires to accept a rollover. • Your plan administrator will either transfer the funds directly to your new plan via check or wire transfer, or provide you with a check (payable to your new plan) to deposit into your account. 2. •
There are two types of rollovers: direct and indirect. A direct rollover is paid from your plan directly to your IRA or • to your new employer’s retirement plan. The funds are never payable to you. An indirect (60-day) rollover is a payment made to you that you later • roll over to an IRA or an employer retirement plan. When you request a distribution from your employer’s
Direct rollover to an IRA: Review your existing plans distribution form for instructions on completing a direct rollover to an IRA. Your plan administrator will either transfer the funds directly to your IRA via check or wire transfer, or provide you with a check (payable to your IRA) to deposit into your account. Contact your financial institution for assistance (most have rollover specialists who can guide you through the process). Indirect (60-day) rollover: Have your plan administrator make the distribution to you. The plan administrator will either issue a check in your name or make a wire transfer to your bank account. If you are making an indirect rollover to an IRA, you can use an existing IRA account or set up a new IRA account at the financial institution of your choice to accept the rollover. If you are making an indirect rollover to a new employer’s plan contact the plan administrator and ask what it requires to accept a rollover. Roll all or part of the funds over by the 60th day after the day you receive the distribution from your plan.4
There are two major disadvantages to indirect rollovers. First, your plan is required to withhold 20% of the taxable portion of your payment for federal income taxes. You’ll get credit for that amount when you file your federal income tax return, but if you want to roll over the entire distribution, you’ll have to come up with the 20% that was withheld from other sources. Second, you run the risk of missing the 60-day deadline, which would make your distribution taxable. On the plus side, you’ll have use of the funds for up to 60 days. In general, direct rollovers are the safer choice. You cannot roll over hardship withdrawals, required minimum distributions, substantially equal periodic payments, corrective distributions, and certain other payments. Nonspousal death benefits can be rolled over only to an inherited IRA, and only in a direct rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer. You may have the option of leaving your funds in your employer’s plan - consult your plan’s terms. You do not need to set up a special “Rollover IRA” account (sometimes
called a “conduit IRA”) to receive your rollover, although some financial firms may require that you do so at least initially. (You can always transfer the funds to a different IRA account later.) While not required, in some cases a separate rollover IRA may be helpful if: (a) you think you may want to roll the taxable portion of your distribution back to an employer plan at some future date, or (b) you’re concerned about protection from creditors, as funds rolled over from an employer plan (and any earnings on those funds) generally receive unlimited protection under federal law if you declare bankruptcy. The IRS may waive the 60-day requirement where the failure to do so would be against equity or good conscience, such as in the event of a casualty, disaster, or other event beyond your reasonable control. There are three ways to obtain a waiver of the 60-day rollover requirement: (a) you qualify for an automatic waiver, (b) you self-certify that you met the requirements of a waiver, or (c) you request and receive a private letter ruling granting a waiver. Consult a tax professional.
Note: If you receive employer stock or other securities as part of your distribution be sure to understand the tax consequences before making a rollover to an IRA. Your distribution may be entitled to favorable net unrealized appreciation (NUA) tax rules. Consult a tax professional.

Technology, Realtor® Use Both Large Part of Home Buyer Process By Focus Omaha Consumers retain the internet as a critical tool during their home buying process, while buyers continue to utilize the knowledge and expertise of a real estate agent, according to the National Association of Realtors®’ Real Estate in a Digital Age report. The report examines the process home buyers go through in the initial online search and the role Realtors® play connecting with customers in the digital space.
26
“Consumers have the ability to do more home buying research online than ever before. Still, Realtors® present tremendous value to buyers from every generation and every background. While consumers have more technological tools at their fingertips, Realtors® continue to be a large part of the home buying and selling equation,” said John Smaby, a second-generation REALTOR® from Edina, Minnesota and broker at Edina Realty. The report found that finding the right property was ranked as the most difficult step in the home buying process. Since the internet is now the first place many people go for information, it is not surprising
Focus | - December 12- December18 | Volume 2 Issue 48
that 44 percent of buyers looked for properties online as a first step in the home buying process (the same as 2017). However, 87 percent of buyers in 2018 purchased their home with assistance from a real estate agent, a share that grows higher for millennials at 90 percent. While 99 percent of millennials and 90 percent of older boomers used online websites in their home search, only 70 percent of the silent generation - those ages 69 to 89 years - did the same. Older boomers used a mobile device at over half the rate of millennials (21 percent compared to 58 percent). When it comes to website listing features, photos and online property information were more important
to millennials, while virtual tours and direct contact with a real estate agent were more important to baby boomers. Despite visual content growing in popularity and importance, older home buyers found virtual tours more useful than younger buyers. All buyers typically spent 10 weeks looking for a home, whereas millennials, members of generation X and the silent generations typically spent 8 weeks looking for a home. Younger and older boomers typically searched for 10 weeks. The Real Estate in a Digital Age report also found greater technology use by Realtors® and real estate firms to serve the needs of clients. Realtors® prefer to communicate with their
clients via email (93 percent) as well as text messages (92 percent) and instant messaging (37 percent). Over 90 percent of Realtors® are also using e-mail, laptops/desktop computers, and smartphones daily. “Realtors® continue to find ways to make home buying and selling more efficient and accessible for their clients. As technology use continues to transform and modernize the real estate industry, Realtors® are focused on adapting to and remaining at the forefront of this change,” said Smaby. Social media continues to be popular with Realtors®, with 76 percent of females active on social media compared to 72 percent of males. Facebook and LinkedIn are the most utilized social media platforms among Realtors® (at 97 percent and 59 percent, respectively) compared to Instagram at 39 percent. The top technology tools that provide the highest quality of leads are social media (47 percent), MLS suite (32 percent), a brokerage’s website (29 percent) and a listing aggregator site (29 percent), according to the report.
Realtors® found that the three most valuable technology tools used in their business, excluding email and cell phones, were local MLS websites/ apps (64 percent), lockbox/smart key devices (39 percent), and social media platforms (28 percent). Nearly 50 percent of all real estate firms cited keeping up with technology as one of the biggest challenges they face in the next two years. For commercial firms, 46 percent cite keeping up with technology as a challenge, while 51 percent of firms with three or more offices said the same. The report looked at the use of drones in real estate and found that 5 percent of Realtors® personally use drones, while 23 percent hire a professional, and 17 percent said that someone in their office uses drones. National Association of Realtors® is America’s largest trade association, representing 1.3 million members involved in all aspects of the residential and commercial real estate industries.
