connect the balloon envelope (canopy) to the gondola. Balloons are inflated with giant fans. Then the pilot ignites the burner forcing hot blasts of air into the balloon canopy, which causes it to rise. Remember your early science lessons – “Hot Air Rises.” Part of the romance in ballooning, is not knowing exactly where the air currents take you. Balloon pilots navigate by ascending and descending the balloons into different air currents, but they are incapable of actually “steering” the balloon into a precise location and can land miles from their launch site. Chase crews follow the balloons to their destinations as the balloons rarely land where they launch.

Tailgating season is almost back and for many of us it couldn’t happen faster By Focus Omaha

Tailgating season is almost back and for many of us it couldn’t happen faster! So, while we wait for Week 1, here are some recipes you can try to make those feast day events a little healthier.

1 small butternut squash, peeled, seeded and cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 3 1/2 cups) 4 ripe plum tomatoes, chopped Two 14-ounce cans black beans, drained and rinsed 1/4 cup chia seeds Freshly ground black pepper 1 to 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 1/4 cup fresh cilantro leaves, chopped 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream

DIRECTIONS Heat 1 1/2 teaspoons of the oil over medium-high heat in a large Dutch oven. Add the turkey and cook, breaking up chunks with the side of a wooden spoon, until browned, about 5 minutes. Push the turkey to the edges of the pan, leaving the middle empty. Reduce the heat to medium and add the remaining 1 1/2 teaspoons oil, then the onion and garlic to the center of the pan. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables start to soften, about 3 minutes. BUTTERNUT SQUASH AND TURKEY CHILI Add the chili powder, cumin and coriander and stir about 30 seconds. Add the tomato paste and 1 teaspoon salt and stir until the INGREDIENTS paste begins to darken in color, about 30 3 teaspoons olive oil seconds. Then add the squash, tomatoes and 1 pound 99 percent fat-free ground turkey 4 cups water, scraping the bottom of the pan 1 medium onion, diced to release any stuck bits. Bring to a simmer, 3 cloves garlic, minced adjust the heat and simmer, uncovered, until 1/4 cup chili powder the chili has thickened and the squash is 1 tablespoon ground cumin tender, 35 to 40 minutes. 2 teaspoons ground coriander 3 tablespoons tomato paste Stir the beans and chia seeds into the chili Kosher salt

and heat through, about 5 minutes. Season with an additional 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of pepper, then taste the chili and stir in up to 2 tablespoons of vinegar. Spoon the chili into bowls and top each bowl with cilantro and a dollop of sour cream.

cost me $2.29 and the price was worth the experiment. I have a nearly full bottle to experiment with again soon.

HARISSA CHICKEN WINGS WITH MINT & CILANTRO YOGURT DIPPING SAUCE I used another ingredient for this dish that I’ve never used before: rose water. Oh my goodness, is the scent absolutely intoxicating! When I was researching Harissa, I came across several Middle Eastern recipes that often combined Harissa with rose water. So I thought I’d give it a try. Trust me, you don’t actually taste roses in this dish. It does, however, temper and balance the chile nicely. I picked mine up at North Park Produce also but I’ve seen it at World Market and any Middle Eastern market will also carry it. You could omit it but if you can find it, I say give it a whirl. It

FOR THE MARINADE 5 tablespoons Harissa chile paste 4 tablespoons grapeseed oil (or light olive oil) 3 tablespoons honey (or agave syrup) 1 tablespoon rose water Zest of one large lemon 3 tablespoons freshly squeezed lemon juice 1 teaspoon ground cumin 1 teaspoon ground coriander ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon sea salt

Author: Anita L. Arambula Yield: Serves 16

3. Next, strain the yogurt: Place a small sieve over a small bowl and line the sieve with cheesecloth; add the yogurt. Allow to drain excess moisture in the refrigerator while chicken is marinating. (This step is optional, however, straining the yogurt will produce a thicker, creamier dipping sauce.) 4. At the four-hour mark, pre-heat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Pull the chicken out of the refrigerator and set on the counter while oven heats up.

FOR THE DIPPING SAUCE 1 ½ cups plain nonfat Greek yogurt 1 tablespoon Harissa chile paste 1 teaspoon honey (or agave syrup) 3 tablespoons finely chopped mint leaves 3 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro pinch sea salt Chopped cilantro, for garnish DIRECTIONS 1. Stir together all the ingredients for the marinade in a large bowl; set aside. 2. Rinse and dry chicken wings. Inspect for excess fat or skin and trip away if needed. Add to marinade and toss to coat each piece well. Cover bowl and refrigerate for at least 4 hours (or overnight).

5. Line two rimmed baking sheets with foil. Spray two cooling racks with non-stick cooking spray and set in the baking sheets. Divide the chicken between the two pans in a single layer so the chicken isn’t touching, if possible. 6. Bake for 20 minutes. Remove sheets from oven and carefully flip all the wings over. Return to oven and bake an additional 25 minutes. Remove sheets again, flip all the wings and return to oven for an additional 15 minutes. 7. Remove baked wings to a serving platter, top with chopped cilantro and serve with dipping sauce on the side. Next week, we’re going to tap into some of our local Chefs to continue to find the best healthy tailgating fare! Until then, “Stay Healthy, Omaha!”

Next Up The Huskers visit 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier Arkansas in an exhibition match on Thursday, Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. (CT) in NU’s final tune-up before kicking off the 2019 campaign on Aug. 22 at Kansas. Kicking Off • Senior defender Sinclaire Miramontez earned a spot on the 2019 Women’s MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, announced by the United Soccer Coaches on Aug. 1. Miramontez is one of 57 student-athletes named to the watch list. The award honors the national player of the year as selected by the United Soccer Coaches. • Nebraska continues its tradition of playing a strong schedule in 2019. This year’s slate features games against 10 NCAA Tournament qualifiers from last season, including four that advanced to the Sweet 16 and two that reached the Elite Eight. • Each of the first five games of the regular season are against 2018 NCAA Tournament participants. During Big Ten play, five of Nebraska’s 11 conference opponents qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season. • Four of Nebraska’s 2019 opponents earned spots in the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll, released on Aug. 6. How Much Annual Income Can Your Retirement Portfolio Provide? By Michael Herek

Your retirement lifestyle will depend not only on your assets and investment choices, but also on how quickly you draw down your retirement portfolio. The annual percentage that you take out of your portfolio, whether from returns or the principal itself, is known as your withdrawal rate. Figuring out an appropriate initial withdrawal rate is a key issue in retirement planning and presents many challenges.

in 1950 could anticipate living an average of 14 years more, to age 79; now a 65-year-old might expect to live for roughly an additional 19 years. Assuming rising inflation, your projected annual income in retirement will need to factor in those cost-of-living increases. That means you’ll need to think carefully about how to structure your portfolio to provide an appropriate withdrawal rate, especially in the early years of retirement.

Why is your withdrawal rate important? Take out too much too soon, and you might run out of money in your later years. Take out too little, and you might not enjoy your retirement years as much as you could. Your withdrawal rate is especially important in the early years of your retirement; how your portfolio is structured then and how much you take out can have a significant impact on how long your savings will last.

Conventional wisdom So what withdrawal rate should you expect from your retirement savings? The answer: it all depends. The seminal study on withdrawal rates for tax-deferred retirement accounts (William P. Bengen, “Determining Withdrawal Rates Using Historical Data,” Journal of Financial Planning, October 1994) looked at the annual performance of hypothetical

portfolios that are continually rebalanced to achieve a 50-50 mix of large-cap (S&P 500 Index) common stocks and intermediate-term Treasury notes. The study took into account the potential impact of major financial events such as the early Depression years, the stock decline of 1937-1941, and the 1973-1974 recession. It found that a withdrawal rate of slightly more than 4% would have provided inflation-adjusted income for at least 30 years.

the potential loss of principal, and there can be no guarantee that any investing strategy will be successful. Rebalancing involves selling some investments in order to buy others. Investors should keep in mind that selling investments in a taxable account could result in a tax liability. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against investment loss.

Inflation is a major consideration To better understand why suggested initial Other later studies have shown that broader withdrawal rates aren’t higher, it’s essential portfolio diversification, rebalancing strateto think about how inflation can affect your gies, variable inflation rate assumptions, and retirement income. important to take a portfolio’s ups and downs into account — and the need for a relatively predictable income stream in retirement isn’t the only reason. According to several studies done in the late 1990s and updated in 2011 by Philip L. Cooley, Carl M. Hubbard, and Daniel T. Walz, the more dramatic a portfolio’s fluctuations, the greater the odds that the portfolio might not last as long as needed. If it becomes necessary during market downturns to sell some securities in order to continue to meet a fixed withdrawal rate, selling at an inopportune time could affect a portfolio’s ability to generate future income.

Calculating an appropriate withdrawal rate Your withdrawal rate needs to take into account many factors, including (but not limited to) your asset allocation, projected inflation rate, expected rate of return, annual income targets, investment horizon, and comfort with uncertainty. The higher your withdrawal rate, the more you’ll have to consider whether it is sustainable over the long term. Ultimately, however, there is no standard rule of thumb; every individual has unique retirement goals, means, and circumstances that come into play.

Making your portfolio either more aggressive or more conservative will affect its lifespan. A more aggressive portfolio may produce higher returns but might also be subject to a higher degree of loss. A more conservative portfolio might produce steadier returns at a lower rate, but could lose purchasing power to inflation.

Solar Is Probably the Solution To Your Problem By Kat Carroll, Solar Heat and Electric Gone are the days of expensive and inaccessible solar. In the past ten years, solar prices have dropped by almost seventy percent, from $9.80 per watt to an average of $2.98 per watt. Solar cell technology breakthroughs mean that in the next five years, panel efficiency might increase from an average of 19-20% percent to 29%, allowing each panel to capture more of the photons that hit its surface. Solar Heat and Electric is here to give you a quick update on the coolest solar tech of the past year.

Solar Fabrics

The lessons that The Hunger Games blockbuster book and movie series taught us are varied, but among the primary: when it comes to revolution, stylistic intention is crucial. In a world where trends overcome divisions of geography and culture, fashion is a way to engage with others, to construct a specific image of oneself, and a way to signal group identity or beliefs. If you’re reading sci-fi that doesn’t pay attention to how its characters dress and what that means, by all means, contact me to direct you to better books. Nowadays, style is, apparently, also a way to charge your cell phone when you’re lost in the wilderness.

Solar Technology That Creates Electricity and Fresh Water

There’s a drought crisis approaching in the form of changing precipitation patterns and over-usage of fresh water. We can look at the Syrian civil war and refugee crisis as an example of the effects of this type of crisis- and now, we can look to solar technology as a partial solution. Solar stills which convert seawater to freshwater have been around for decades, but recent research from King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has improved their effectiveness. The new stills capture the unused heat from solar panels and use it to heat seawater to a point that the water evaporates and then condenses free of salt into a lower channel. These newer solar stills can produce about 1.64 liters of water per panel square meter- almost double current commercial water stills.

In 2018, Britain’s Nottingham Trent University created a textile yarn composed of tiny solar panels, that creates clothing that is both comfortable, washable, and able to charge your phone when the sun is out. Solar fashion has a long way to go, but I can’t wait until the day I can integrate solar panels into my bomber jacket and backpack.

Floating Solar Farms

If you’re not reading solar news on the daily because it’s part of your job as a solar marketer, you probably didn’t know solar panels could float. It’s an idea that has taken off in the Netherlands, China, and Japan in big terms. By 2023, 2 gigawatts of floating solar power will have been realized. The newest, coolest part of the story is what’s being imagined by a team of researchers from UC Berkeley: floating solar farms that draw excess carbon dioxide from the oceans. The electricity produced by these panels would split water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen, and the hydrogen would react with the carbon dioxide in the water to create usable liquid methanol. Given that the ocean is absorbing most of the excess carbon dioxide we produce, this could be a game changer in our ability to reduce our impact on the carbon cycle. If the fuel is stored rather than burned, we would be able to take tons of carbon dioxide out of the ocean-atmosphere cycle. If it’s burned,

there’s no more net carbon entering the cycle from underground fossil fuel extraction.

Thermal Batteries for Overnight Power

One of the constant drawbacks for solar energy is its inability to produce power overnight. The extra energy a solar array produces during a day is normally stored in a lithium battery which then has the capacity to power the building overnight. However, there might soon be technology that allows us to store larger amounts of energy and produce energy when the sun is down- thermal batteries. Researchers from Curtin University are developing a battery that stores heat rather than electricity, but they might be caught out by South Australian company CCT Energy Storage. Their TED battery can store five to six times more energy than a typical lithiumion battery, will last longer, is recyclable and significantly cheaper. As this thermal battery technology progresses, it might fill the last gap in clean energy technology: it will be usable by fossil-fuel and energyintensive industries.

Enjoy a factual, ethical, listener-friendly, underground flavor transposed to major platforms and applaud the resolve of DIY.

During our phone call, Bibby described his brother as shy and spoke about his transformative years as we caught up. Zak roamed compassion and loyalty for his community without establishment. The two worked together in the electrician’s union as apprentices.

The sentiments of Zakary Drake are displayed on “Summertime,” in my humble opinion.
