THROUGH JANUARY, 19, 2020 PAUL ANTHONY SMITH Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St. Drawing on the art historical traditions of Pointilism and Geometric Abstraction, Paul Anthony Smith creates “picotages,” named for a pattern printing technique that entails pressing textured blocks onto fabric. Trained in ceramics, Smith uses sharp, wooden tools to stipple the surfaces of photographs he has taken in New York City and Jamaica that examine the African and Caribbean diasporas. THROUGH JANUARY, 19, 2020 WORD AND IMAGE: THE SAINT JOHN’S BIBLE Joslyn Art Museum, 2200 Dodge St. Featuring the first handwritten illuminated Bible commissioned by a Benedictine Monastery since the fifteenth century, The Saint John’s Bible incorporates contemporary imagery and events to connect traditional medieval craftsmanship with the twenty-first century. https://www.joslyn.org THROUGH FEBRUARY, 2, 2020 LOUDER THAN WORDS: ROCK, POWER, AND POLITICS Durham Museum, 801 S. 10th St. This exhibit explores how rock music has shaped cultural norms on topics such as civil rights, feminism, war, and more. Historical artifacts, photos, and videos show how the power of rock has influenced politics throughout American history. durhammuseum.org THROUGH FEBRUARY 15, 2020 Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts 724 South 12th St., Omaha Jillian Mayer: TIMESHARE Jillian Mayer’s practice continually explores how technology affects our lives, bodies, and identities through investigating the blurred lines between our physical and online worlds in regard to dependency and value. Recent works by the artist include her prolific group of Slumpies—the artist’s sculptural answer to the shape our bodies take while engaging with hand-held technology. While referencing the history of art and the live model, these playful yet critical sculptures address the way humans are physically altering their bodies due to these technologies. Often paired with humourous promo-videos, these deeply imperfect sculptures are inviting as well as entrenched with contemporary marketing techniques, allowing their reach to stretch between the art gallery and the storefront. In TIMESHARE, Mayer explores how art can function and/or aid during times of disaster or even when the planet becomes uninhabitable.
4
Her work uses the formula of part solutionism part subtle denial mixed with an “everything will be fine” attitude. While the problem might actually be too large to be addressed in any actual sense, the works in this show attempt, with humor and insight. For example, A Sculpture Can Be Used As A Flotation Device In Times Of Emergency is a text work that greets the viewers, and sets the stage for the exhibition. Upon entering further, the viewer will be transported into a contemporary conservatory, an indoor/outdoor sculpture park of sorts, complete with fountains, architectural resting zones, and greenery. Through a variety of mediums that include video, painting, and sculptural objects, Mayer’s environment can act as a place that offers refuge and solace while also serving as a blueprint for garden designers of the future. TIMESHARE investigates and comments on both art’s objective and the artist’s responsibility.
Friday – 11 AM–5 PM Saturday – 11 AM–5 PM Free and open to all. THROUGH MARCH 8, 2020 SOUND THE ALARM: THE MAKING OF THE OMAHA FIRE DEPARTMENT Durham Museum, 801 S 10th St. The Omaha Fire Department traces its roots to 1860 when the city’s first firefighting company was founded. Using documents from the Byron Reed Collection this exhibit chronicles the Omaha Fire Department’s late 19th century beginnings. INFLUENCE Thru August 20, 2020

www.focusomaha.com Creativity Begins with an Idea.
Nothing exists by itself; everything has something next to it. Something changes drastically depending on what is next to it. – Jun Kaneko The exploration and celebration of the creative process are at the core of the KANEKO mission. To seek out the challenges of artistry and to discuss the diversity of creative thought in philanthropy, education, and the sciences is what connects all KANEKO programs, exhibitions, and partnerships. This is the vein that passes through the diverse offerings of KANEKO, containing the unique and irreplaceable voice of one of the greatest artisans in history. To influence is to enact change; to sway the course of history and challenge the boundaries of what was once believed to be limitations. Jun Kaneko has forged this path for countless artists, educators, and creative thinkers around the lioiooityrworld, and in the founding of KANEKO has created for the Omaha Community a space in which to be inspired and to enact change.
Through the exploration of physical space, artistic themes, history, and experience, the season of INFLUENCE will examine the history of change at KANEKO while celebrating the future of the organization which has become a driving force for inclusion and diversity of creative thought in Omaha. The artists and collaborators participating in INFLUENCE will illustrate the importance of the creative process, visually and emotionally impact visitors, and present a unique vision that is the hallmark of KANEKO exhibitions. The INFLUENCE season displays the creative work of KANEKO founder and Japanese ceramist Jun Kaneko and how his work, teaching, and creative philosophy has impacted the Omaha community and beyond. INFLUENCE explores the results of living and collaborating within a creative environment, showcasing the history of the creative community in Omaha and how the path of creative individuals impacts the lives of others. The season will highlight projects by previous KANEKO program partners and explore how their work has changed since their creative debut at KANEKO. Their stories, combined with the stories of previous employees and apprentices of the Jun Kaneko Studio, the Bemis Residency Program, and the collective visiting audience of the Omaha community, will showcase the overarching narrative of creative inclusion that KANEKO has assisted in facilitating over the ten-year history of the organization.

Jack Hotel By Focus Omaha
In our neverending quest to continually find new bands for you to feast your ears on, Focus caught up with three-time OEA Award Winners Jack Hotel and singer-songwriter Gunter Voelker for a Q&A this week! You guys are from Lincoln, right? Yep! The band consists of: Günter Voelker - singer-songwriter, guitar Joe Salvati - dobro, lap steel Josh Rector - violin Kim Taruc - upright bass What made you gravitate towards Americana/ Roots music and where did your passion originate from? My passion for roots music must start with my parents. It’s more or less what I grew up listening to: folk, blues, and country blues. It’s what my parents’ friends played around fires with guitars. Appalachian songs, country songs, folk songs, songs that everyone seemed to know without needing them to be explained. I listen to and appreciate a lot of different kinds of
music, but I realized in my adulthood that those sounds had become the music of my heart, and whenever I write a melody, that’s what tumbles out. You’ve already celebrated a lot of success locally. What’s in the future?
I’ll be at Rock ‘n’ Joe Coffee Bar on 12/14, and at the Listening Room in Hastings with Sky Smeed on 1/24. You can find out more about Jack Hotel on their site at https://www.jackhotelmusic.com.
Nice of you to say! We’re finishing up our third album, A Town Called Hesitation, which we’re really excited about. I’d say people can expect us to keep plugging away: more songs, more records, more videos, more shows. We’re going to keep doing it as well as we can until the wheels fall off. If you could have a jam session with anyone in the world, who would it be? I wouldn’t complain if I found myself around a coffee table with Ry Cooder playing mandolin, Gillian Welch on guitar and vocals, Jason Romero on banjo, Brittany Haas on violin, and Andy Hall on dobro. But even sitting in with a bunch of superstars, I bet I would miss things about Joe, Josh, and Kim. Upcoming Shows?

Outbreak of Lung Injury Associated with the Use of E-Cigarette, or Vaping Products By Focus Omaha
CDC, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), state and local health departments, and other clinical and public health partners are investigating a national outbreak of e-cigarette, or vaping, product use associated lung injury (EVALI). WHAT IS NEW CDC has analyzed national data on use of THC-containing product brands by EVALI patients. • Overall, 152 different THC-containing product brands were reported by EVALI patients. • Dank Vapes, a class of largely counterfeit THC-containing products of unknown origin, was the most commonly reported product brand used by patients nationwide, although there are regional differences. While Dank Vapes was most commonly reported in the Northeast and South, TKO and Smart Cart brands were more commonly reported by patients in the West and Rove was more common in the Midwest. The data further supports that EVALI is associated with THC-containing products and that it is not likely associated with a single THC-containing product brand. • CDC recommends that people should not use THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products, particularly from informal sources like friends, family, or in-person or online dealers. acetate in all of the samples. 0 THC was identified in 82% of the samples and nicotine was identified in 62% of the samples. 0 CDC tested for a range of other chemicals that might be found in e-cigarette, or vaping, products, including plant oils, petroleum distillates like mineral oil, MCT oil, and terpenes (which are compounds found in or added to THC products). None of these chemicals of concern were detected in the BAL fluid samples tested. This is the first time that we have detected a chemical of concern in biologic samples from patients with these lung injuries. These findings provide direct evidence of vitamin E acetate at the primary site of injury within the lungs. These findings complement the ongoing work of the FDA and some state public health laboratories to characterize e-liquid exposures and inform the ongoing national outbreak.
ABOUT THE OUTBREAK: • The EVALI cases and EVALI deaths reported as of December 3, 2019, include data from a two-week period, November 17 through November 30. • As of December 3, 2019, CDC will only report hospitalized EVALI cases and EVALI deaths regardless of hospitalization status. CDC has removed nonhospitalized cases from previously reported case counts. • Due to only reporting hospitalized EVALI cases as of December 3, 2019, CDC removed 175 nonhospitalized cases from previously reported national cases. See Public Health Reporting for more information. people should not add any substances to e-cigarette • As of December 3, 2019, a total of 2,291 or vaping products that are not intended by the hospitalized EVALI cases have been reported to manufacturer, including products purchased CDC from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, through retail establishments. and two U.S. territories (Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). like friends, family, or in-person or online dealers, are linked to most of the cases and play a major role in the outbreak. CDC has analyzed national data on use of THC-containing product brands by EVALI patients. 0 Overall, 152 different THC-con taining product brands were reported by EVALI patients. 0 Dank Vapes, a class of largely counterfeit THC-containing products of unknown origin, was the most commonly reported product brand used by patients nationwide, although there are regional differences. While Dank Vapes was most commonly reported in the Northeast and South, TKO and Smart Cart brands were more commonly reported by patients in the West and Rove was more common in the Midwest. WHAT WE DON’T KNOW While it appears that vitamin E acetate is associated with EVALI, evidence is not yet sufficient to rule out contribution of other chemicals of concern. Many different substances and product sources are still under investigation, and it may be that there is more than one cause of this outbreak. WHAT CDC RECOMMENDS • CDC recommends that people do not use THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products. • CDC also recommends that people should not: Buy any type of e-cigarette, or vaping, products, particularly those containing THC from informal sources like friends, family, or in-person or online dealers. Modify or add any substances to e-cigarette, or vaping, products that are not intended by the manufacturer, including products purchased through retail establishments. • While it appears that vitamin E acetate is associated with EVALI, evidence is not yet sufficient to rule out the contribution of other chemicals of concern. • Many different substances and product sources are still under investigation, and it may be that there is more than one cause of this outbreak. • The only way to assure that you are not at risk while the investigation continues is to consider refraining from use of all e-cigarette, or vaping, products. • Adults using e-cigarettes to quit smoking should not go back to smoking; they should weigh all risks and benefits and consider utilizing FDA approved cessation medications. • Contact your healthcare provider if you need help quitting tobacco products, including e-cigarettes. • Adults who continue to use an e-cigarette, or vaping, product, should carefully monitor themselves for symptoms and see a healthcare provider immediately if they develop symptoms like those reported in this outbreak. • Adults with ongoing problematic marijuana use should seek out evidence-based behavioral treatment. As appropriate, they should also seek treatment for any other co-occurring substance misuse or abuse problems or related health conditions.
continued from page 18 • A number of therapy-based treatments such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, contingency management, motivational enhancement therapy, and multi-dimensional family therapy have been shown to help people who have problematic marijuana use that led to significant impairment or distress. • Visit Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration’s Treatment Locator to locate treatment in your area or call 1-800-662-HELP (4357). • Regardless of the ongoing investigation: E-cigarette, or vaping, products should never be used by youths, young adults, or women who are pregnant. • Adults who do not currently use tobacco products should not start using e-cigarette, or vaping, products. There is no safe tobacco product. All tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, carry a risk. • THC use has been associated with a wide range of health effects, particularly with prolonged frequent use. The best way to avoid potentially harmful effects is to not use THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products. Persons with ongoing problematic marijuana use that causes significant impairment or distress should seek evidence-based treatment by a healthcare provider. • People who have significant impairment or distress from ongoing problematic use of THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products should seek evidence-based behavioral treatment and recovery services.
KEY FACTS ABOUT USE OF E-CIGARETTE, OR VAPING, PRODUCTS • Electronic cigarettes—or e-cigarettes—are also called vapes, e-hookahs, vape pens, tank systems, mods, and electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS). • Using an e-cigarette is commonly called vaping. • E-cigarettes work by heating a liquid to produce an aerosol that users inhale into their lungs. • The liquid can contain: nicotine, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinoid (CBD) oils, and other substances and additives. THC is the psychoactive mind-altering compound of marijuana that produces the “high.” KEY FACTS ABOUT VITAMIN E ACETATE • Vitamin E acetate is used as an additive, most notably as a thickening agent in THC-containing e-cigarette, or vaping, products. • Vitamin E is a vitamin found in many foods, including vegetable oils, cereals, meat, fruits, and vegetables. It is also available as a dietary supplement and in many cosmetic products, like skin creams. • Vitamin E acetate usually does not cause harm when ingested as a vitamin supplement or applied to the skin. However, previous research suggests that when vitamin E acetate is inhaled, it may interfere with normal lung functioning.

Hyddin at the Slowdown By Tatiana Ballinger The Slowdown housed a cash-only celebration Friday, December 6, 2019, for Hyddin, Atliens, and Omaha’s own String Theory. This genre of electronic dance music is called dubstep and organized many scarved and pantsless minors who vomited all over the bathroom before the clock struck nine due to a risky mixture of nerves and alcohol, according to two Slowdown employees and security guards who pleaded with me for my word to not join the nauseated mob. “No way,” I said standing with three other smiling stags. On a typical amateur night in any urban town, crowds of burner playa people emerge from tinted windows on bumping cars swerving over bridges in overt presence and synchronization. The music alone proved serendipitous to many outwardly woke coeds shivering in line with their heads high and glassed over eyes. Will a looming tech boom bring more laptop wizzes to make more dubstep? Will Omaha become a hub for electronic dance music? I would not put it past the cornhusker beef state to fully transition to tech especially for its music niche, but it seemed all too natural in a complete absence of name branded Patagonia and North Face “fashion” that night at the Slowdown, a lovely perk to a calm seer of beauty.
allowed out of towners to safely carpool into the city for a concert. The club kid revivals smoked vape pens in thrifted fur hats, bringing a new hyphy to the clubs of Omaha. Not fully committed to steampunk or disco aesthetics, a Halloween store mixture of the two reminds us of a regular Tuesday afternoon in the park in San Francisco, sans tutu. Focus on quirky Omaha music via facebook for upcoming events for the mostly lyricless String Theory of Omaha, streaming at soundcloud. com/string-theory-music for a time and place. In punk scenes, being sad, sober, and alone is allowed and even celebrated. There is an understanding of solace in the fashion statement alone. For dubstep, however, it is probably best to stick to the buddy system before someone asks you out by tossing a glow stick to cross your path in a calculated fluke. This is a real counter-culture strong in its numbers and with no desire to be understood. The fashion is festive, encompassing a lot of different styles of dress. The music is the glue that holds these attitudes together, a sort of peace and love, unity and respect grey zone that breeds shade when you find yourself alone at the show and without any pants.
