Senior Quotes - Top 20 - Retiring Teachers - Valedictorian & Salutatorian

Saying goodbye: Three PMHS teachers share wisdom before flying into retirement Brett Andrews

Number of years teaching: 38 years Favorite teaching memory: Sorry I do not have ‘a’ memory. Collaborating and socializing with colleagues, being able to support and mentor students, seeing the “ah ha” moments of students with not just subject matter but also with their personal life outside the classroom. Favorite part of PMHS: Comradery with colleagues. Feelings about retiring during COVID-19: It’s a bittersweet time. Lifestyle is changing, and closure to this career is happening without being able to say goodbye in person. Advice to graduating seniors: Always look for the positive. Things in life do not always go as you plan or expect. You have to be flexible and able to adjust. Focus on what you can control, don’t worry/stress over things you cannot control. “Things turn out best for those who make the best of how things turn out.”

Gary Raker

Number of years teaching: 40 years of teaching @ PMHS, 1980-2020 Favorite teaching memory: When you have taught and coached for 40 years, it is hard to narrow it down to one favorite teaching or coaching memory. My favorite memories are each time a student or athlete had success in accomplishing a goal that they had set and had worked for. These include: - Creating the Academy of Finance in our Business Department and speaking at the NAF National Convention. - College Scholarships and Admission Notifications - Attending all three of my daughters graduations here as Falcons of Perry Meridian High School. Favorite part of PMHS: My favorite part of PMHS are the people. I have worked with so many talented administrators, teachers, and students while I have taught here. Perry is more than a place to work. Once you are here, you are forever a part of the PMHS Falcon Family. It has always felt like a second home to me. Feelings about retiring during COVID-19: It has been difficult to not have the daily social interaction that we are used to here at PMHS. I feel sorry more for the seniors who missed athletic events, musicals, robotics, prom, and graduation ceremonies. It feels strange to walk out the door and retire during this pandemic, but I am grateful for the great memories of the last 40 years! Advice to graduating seniors: My advice to seniors is to remember this: Your future doesn’t lie ahead of you waiting to happen. It lies deep inside of you, waiting to be discovered. Find your passion!

Susie Schoch

Number of years teaching: Began teaching in 1980. I have 25 years in public schools, five years at IUPUI teaching Comp, and ten years being a stay-at-home mom. Favorite teaching memory: What I like best about Perry are relationships with the students. From repeater 9s to Speech to AP 12s, students have brightened my days, given me their energy, and, for the most part, cooperated well. Favorite part of PMHS: My favorite memory is when, during Mr. Schoch’s first week as a teacher at Perry, he came by my room and asked me for protocol regarding students engaging in sex in the boys bathroom. Another fave was playing the role of Penny in “You Can’t Take It With You,” and when each teacher entered on stage, the student body applauded. Feelings about retiring during COVID-19: I’m “sandbag in my throat” much of the day sad. I am always sad for a short time saying goodbye to seniors, but 2020 is one of the best groups of students I have been privileged to teach, and I am grieving no closure with them. I want my last day in class, and I want to do my happy dance when the final bell rings. I will miss being around young people. Advice to graduating seniors: Advice to seniors? “This above all, to thine own self be true.” “Strive, seek, find, and do not yield.” “Show up, listen, try to laugh,” and when necessary, be gentle with yourself.

JOE CARPER It may be hard to remember a time when he wasn’t performing on Perry’s stages, competing on its fields, or learning in its classrooms, but Joe Carper only became a Falcon as a freshman. Four years of his effort has culminated into a GPA of 4.78, the honor of being named the class of 2020’s valedictorian and the title of being an Indiana Academic All-Star. As a Falcon TV anchor, Carper was one of the first faces students see, but he could also be one of the last to leave. Varying from Creative Writing Club to the track team, he participated in numerous after school activities. Putting on a show, whether in the countless theatrical productions he’s written or been in or one of his Then and Now performances, has a fond place in Carper’s heart. “Seeing my play Neil performed at FEST,” he says of his favorite moment as a Falcon. “I was very proud of what the cast had turned my words into.” And as his teachers and friends know, the National Merit Finalist has a lot of words to say. Either channeling them into rewarding scholarship essays or using them to excitedly recount the events of “teen court” for his friends and English teachers (whom he would like to thank), his ability to express himself has proven quite useful. Continuing his education at the University of Notre Dame with a major in Philosophy, he will take with him the lessons Perry has taught him. One he’ll never forget? “It’s always worth it to care about something.”

For salutatorian Makayla Gomperts, a lot of hard work and dedication went into a successful high school career. With a GPA of 4.67 and a hefty resume under her belt, she is ready to take on the world outside of Perry Meridian. From the gymsasium to the music room, Gomperts has left a lasting impression of optimism and leadership on all of her peers. A member of the volleyball team for four years and a concert band performer for two, she loves to represent Perry for more than just her academics. She finds this crucial to being a Falcon. “Don’t miss out on any moment. Give it your all and you will fall in love with Perry,” she advises. Her “all” included presiding over the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and being the vice president of National Honors Society, the latter group awarding her a scholarship for her diligence. Gomperts acknowledges how the people around her are critical to making it through her loaded daily schedules. “It’s important to maintain friendships and other relationships for support and encouragement,” she says. She would like to express her gratitude to Jacqui Sheehan, Kimberly Stafford, Susie Schoch, as well as her parents and grandparents for their continuous support and love. Gomperts will be attending the University of Evansville with a double major in Biology and Spanish, with admission into the Baccalaureate to Doctor of Medicine program. Going from a Falcon to a Purple Ace, she definitely has a bright future up her sleeve.
