FROM THE DIRECTOR The truth is, I remember it amazingly well, even though it was several decades ago. The enormous fat suit, the sweaty bald pate, the ridiculously large, itchy, fake beard. I loved the opportunity to swagger, to be larger thanlife, to be expansive. It took a lot of effort to make the transition from my awkward 8th grade self to the rollicking mountain of fun, frivolity, laughter, and lechery that is Sir John Falstaff, but for one wonderful weekend at Roosevelt Junior High in Eugene, Oregon, I made that transition with all the passion and chutzpah I could muster. Virtually all my best friends at the time were in that production of The Merry Wives of Windsor. None of them now are involved in the theater. At that time, we were all young Shakespearean actors under the tutelage of the fabulous Ray Scofield, who made sure we knew exactly what we were saying, why we were saying it, and that we had a good time doing it! He led us on a joyful journey of discovery for which I am utterly grateful. I still have my Folger edition of the play (with the picture of the fardistant, almost mythical Folger Shakespeare Library on the back) with some of my notes that we used for that production in it. It cost 50 cents. The play has stayed with me, and I am thrilled finally to have a chance to direct it. Again, I have many good friends and wonderfully talented collaborators joining me. I expect we will have as much fun as we did at Roosevelt Junior High. The play is mostly built for fun and frivolity. It
feels a bit like Shakespeare’s version of the largecast rom com movies that tend to come out around the holidays. Extreme characters, behaving somewhat badly, but with good hearts and lessons to learn. Merry Wives is not out to change anyone’s life nor reform anyone’s wild and wayward ways. It has a humbler mission. It is here to tell a little uncomfortable truth, point out a few of the flagrant flaws of mortal men (and women, too, though mostly men…), and perhaps to encourage us to see ourselves more clearly and even laugh at ourselves more heartily. In the world today, I think that is a pretty nice and worthwhile thing to do. I’m honored, as always, to be working with the excellent folks at the Folger and these ridiculously talented actors, designers, technicians, assistants, and associates. It takes a small village to make these plays! Doing Merry Wives with Ray and my best friends in 8th grade was a tremendous gift. I am grateful every day that I continue to get to splash around in imaginary worlds with close friends and inspiring collaborators as we try our best to fulfill a more than 400year old blueprint for a flawed, fabulous world. Thank you for joining us and for taking the plunge. –Aaron Posner 5
FROM THE DRAMATURG As far as origin myths go, The Merry Wives of Windsor’s is quite good. Elizabeth I, taken with Falstaff in the Henry IV plays, directed the playwright to present the knight in love. No sixteenth century source confirms the request; it is referenced in a preface to the play from Nicholas Rowe’s 1709 edition, more than a century after Elizabeth would have enjoyed 1 Henry IV (or anything) on stage. If, indeed, Merry Wives was intended to feature Falstaff as a lover, the affair must be between the man and his purse. Sir John attempts to seduce Windsor’s wives because he’s convinced they hold the keys to their husbands’ coffers. It’s money, not love, he’s after. Neither the astute Mistress Page nor clever Mistress Ford succumbs to his charms; instead, the two collude to teach him a lesson for offending their honor and the honor of the husbands he aims to cuckold. Anyone familiar with 1 Henry IV knows Falstaff places little stock in honor: “Can honor set to a leg? No. Or an arm? No.” It holds no more value for him in Merry Wives. Falstaff’s indifference to honor distinguishes him from those around him, and in this play, it’s women who are in line for medals. The stakes are different, of course, between the battlegrounds of Shrewsbury and the inviting residences of Windsor, and there’s much debate on the 6
benefits of relocating Falstaff to a new genre and century. The monumental clashes among princes and rebels are swapped for skirmishes of middleclass morality. In the history play, Falstaff found a prince willing enough to cavort for a time, but in comedy, the wives are more discriminating. Good for them. They are wise to be cautious. In Windsor, deer are not the only items Falstaff aims to poach. But his eyes are too big for even his stomach when he imagines he can compromise both women at once, using exactly the same means: “he cares not what he puts into the press, when he would put us two.” Among Falstaff’s gross mistakes is thinking too little of the women’s virtue, sophistication, and complexity. It is an ignorance the play cannot abide. The demonstration of wit and agency by Windsor’s wives is the play’s great achievement and delight. These are not queens or countesses, but housewives who make superb use of the domestic sphere to shame and educate the men who underestimate them. How better to punish Falstaff’s filthy presumptions than to cover him (in this production) in household garbage? For his scheme to manipulate the wives’
affections and property, why not send him into the world as a woman pursued by a man who intends her harm? Finally, how rich to fix horns, literally, on the head of the beast who boasts about cuckolding others. We meet bold women throughout Shakespeare’s comedies, but these outspoken wives will not be tamed by the play’s end. They do not surrender any of their authority. They do not apologize for indulging their own merriment: “Wives may be merry, and yet honest, too.” At the end of the play, only men recognize the need for change, and both Falstaff and the jealous Mr. Ford will confess that publicly. The plot’s insistence on a public acknowledgment and correction of the men’s unacceptable behavior made the world of the 1970s a perfect fit for this production. It was the time of the second wave of feminism, the ERA, Gloria Steinem, the National Organization of Women, the ‘51% minority,’ and essays like “I Want a Wife” in the new Ms. Magazine. Windsor wives exhibit a clear sense of their own value and decide it is time to have it acknowledged beyond the realm of the home. Upon the heels of their example (spoiler alert!), the next generation’s Windsor wife will similarly assert her authority, along with a merry desire. To the
credit of Windsor men, they do not begrudge the women their plots or punishments, their roasts or their rebellions. With a nod to fortune (another powerful lady!), reform feels possible in Windsor. The wives’ merriment is appreciated as a benefit to all, anticipating that “in the long run . . . women’s liberation will be men’s liberation, too” (G. Steinem, New York Magazine, 1969). –Michele Osherow
SYNOPSIS In The Merry Wives of Windsor, fat, disreputable Falstaff simultaneously pursues two women, Mistress Ford and Mistress Page, who outwit him. Falstaff hopes to seduce the wives so he can gain access to their husbands’ wealth. Mr. Ford learns of Falstaff’s approaches and is consumed by jealousy. In disguise, he befriends Falstaff to learn about Mistress Ford’s behavior. The wives, however, trick Falstaff and Mr. Ford. As Falstaff visits Mistress Ford, Mistress Page announces that Mr. Ford is coming. Falstaff hides from him and ends up being thrown in the river. Another visit to Mistress Ford and Mistress Page ends similarly: Falstaff disguises himself as “the fat woman of Brentford,” whom Mr. Ford hates. Falstaff is eventually lured to a comical nighttime rendezvous where all of Windsor comes together to humiliate him. 7

Folger Theatre Folger Shakespeare Library, opened in 1932, featured the first replica in North America of an Elizabethan theater, a 250seat space designed to suggest the innyard playing spaces. Founders Henry Clay and Emily Jordan Folger envisioned it as a place for the performance of the plays in Shakespeare’s style, and the first nationally televised broadcast of a Shakespeare play in the US was Julius Caesar from the Folger stage in 1949. Folger Theatre produces seasons of Shakespeare, other plays from the period of the Folger’s rare collection, and new work, including commissions, inspired by the period, with awardwinning stagings of more than 70 percent of Shakespeare’s canon, as well as classical and Restoration work. Folger Theatre has collaborated with the Classical Theatre of Harlem, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Guthrie, Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival, and other theaters across the country. Folger Theatre is the recipient of 30 Helen Hayes Awards including four for Outstanding Resident Production for Sense and Sensibility, The Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet, and Measure for Measure.
Janet Alexander Griffin Artistic Producer As Director of Public Programs, Griffin has established Folger Theatre as a home for creative, contemporary approaches to classic theater. She has produced more than 25 seasons of theater, including the majority of Shakespeare plays, as well as the work of many other playwrights; more than 800 concerts of early music; and a like number of
other cultural events. Her leadership of Folger Theatre has seen the theater recognized with 148 nominations and 30 awards for excellence from Washington’s Helen Hayes Awards. These include four awards for Outstanding Resident Production, most recently received for Sense and Sensibility in 2017. Bard Records, created by Griffin, has released 23 titles of music by Folger Consort and others, and Folger Theatre has seven fully dramatized Shakespeare audio books available through Simon and Schuster. Projects commissioned or developed include Lynn Redgrave’s Shakespeare for My Father and Rachel and Juliet; The Fairy Queen and other presentations of Baroque music and Shakespeare with Derek Jacobi, Richard Clifford, and other celebrated artists; Roger Rees’ What You Will; The Second Shepherds’ Play adapted by Mary Hall Surface; Aaron Posner’s District Merchants; Caroline Shaw’s The Tempest; The Gravedigger’s Tale with Louis Butelli; and Confection with Third Rail Projects. She was the first to bring to Washington a Shakespeare’s Globe production and to take Folger programming to London’s Wanamaker Playhouse at the Globe, as well as other venues in Washington, New York, and California. Other Folger programs stewarded by Griffin are the O.B. Hardison Poetry series; screenings from the Royal Shakespeare Company; and lectures and readings by theater professionals, early modern scholars, and contemporary literary figures.
Beth Emelson Associate Artistic Producer Folger Theatre: since 2004. OffBroadway: Producing Director, Atlantic Theater Company (OBIE and Drama Desk Award winner); Producing Director, Classic Stage Company (Lortel and OBIE Award winner). Broadway and OffBroadway: Associate Executive Producer, Lincoln Center Theater (Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics’ Circle, Lortel, and OBIE Award winner); General Management Associate: Brooklyn Academy of Music and The Public Theater; Producing Director, Member, Board Member, Naked Angels. She produces for both the Nantucket and Tribeca Film Festivals as well as teaching producing for New York University.
The Folger Shakespeare Library will advance its commitment to serving as a gift to the American people. We will share our collection, deliver highest-quality humanities research and learning experiences, and engage diverse audiences in exhibitions and performances in a vibrant, accessible new pavilion. The Wonder of Will will raise $50 million to support this project and the Folger’s many programs that bring Shakespeare and his world to life for scholars, students, enthusiasts, and you.
