PRINCE CHARLES’S GODSON AND ONE OF INDIA’S MOST ELIGIBLE BACHELORS
MAHARAJA SAWAI PADMANABH SINGH ON MOVING WITH THE TIMES AND A SPECIAL INVITATON TO BOOK A STAY AT HIS OPULENT PALACE IN JAIPUR
Jaipur’s City Palace’s magnificent Shobha Niwas was once the throne room. The palace complex (above) 4 has been home to rulers since the early 18th century. Now tourists can live like a king by renting a suite through Airbnb
‘India is a democracy now and we have to open ourselves to the world’
Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh – known as Pacho – is ushering in a new era for his family dynasty and Jaipur. “We should be proud of our history,” he says. “That’s what makes us unique”

‘I want to put Jaipur on the map. Tourists want to explore our culture’ he Maharaja of Jaipur is in reflective mood as T he opens the doors to his home, the opulent City Palace. Impeccably dressed and with brooding good looks, 21-year-old Maharaja Sawai Padmanabh Singh treats hello! to a tour of the 18th-century complex as he tells us his plans for the future. A godson of the Prince of Wales, the Maharaja was just 12 when he inherited his title and is credited with reinventing the role, giving it a new lease of life with a modern twist. As he chats amid the palace splendour, Padmanabh – affectionately known as Pacho – tells us of his plans to “move with the times” and how he views himself as an ambassador for Jaipur, the capital of the north Indian state of Rajasthan, where his dynasty is enjoying something of a renaissance on the back of his popularity. In the Pink City, as Jaipur is known, he is revered almost as a demigod. “I try to act like a cultural ambassador, an ambassador for tourism,” says Pacho, whose international profile started to rise after he escorted Ava Phillippe, the daughter of Hollywood stars Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe, to Le Bal des Débutantes in Paris in 2017, and walked the runway for Dolce & Gabbana at Milan Men’s Fashion Week in 2018. IN GOOD TASTE His latest project will allow tourists to enjoy a taste of royal life: he is renting out the palace’s onebedroom Gudliya Suite through Airbnb. It is on the lower floors of the Chandra Mahal, which is one of the oldest buildings in the complex and has hosted numerous illustrious guests, including the Queen, Prince Charles, Diana, Princess of Wales and Jackie Kennedy. The suite can be rented from around £5,000 a night, with the proceeds going to a charity set up by his mother, the Princess Diya Kumari Foundation, which she founded to help vulnerable women. “I want to put my beloved Jaipur on the

That’s what makes us unique… and actually these rooms were constructed with the idea that they would be used to entertain and receive guests and help with our public relations.”
s
MOVING WITH THE TIMES An accomplished polo player, Pacho is also an influencer, with 148,000 followers on Instagram. “I personally look after my Instagram account. My posts are about polo and Indian traditions and festivals. It’s very important that young people know and value our past – you have to accept the new alongside the old. In a different age it would have been inconceivable to imagine opening the doors of the palace to tourists, but India is a democracy now and we have to open ourselves to the world.” While he has a legion of female fans, he is happy to remain single and instead focus his energies on capitalising on his country’s grand history for the modern era. “I want to do a lot of things before I think about getting married,” he says. “I want to

Claire was behind the Gudliya Suite’s décor, and was inspired “by the magic and colour” of the city. “The only instructions I received from His Highness was that he didn’t want a single white wall in the suite,” she says. “Each space is brought alive by a different colour: green in the entrance; blue in the bedroom; pink in the bathroom. I found the furniture in a storeroom in the palace and the textiles are all Indian.”
s
MAN OF THE PEOPLE As he carves out his royal role in the 21st century, Pacho says that he looks to his godfather the Prince of Wales for inspiration. “Prince Charles is one of the most special people I am fortunate to have in my life. I see him at least once a year… I think what really amazes me about him is the fact that he’s so aware of things. Every time I meet him he knows exactly where I am and what I’m doing. What also amazes me is how aware he is of the local political situation. He keeps such a keen eye on our country, and that I find really very impressive. “He never makes you feel you’re in the company of someone that popular or important. But also, the way he treats the people around him, the staff – he’ll ask everybody what their name is and how they are. That is something not so many people do, especially in our

I want to finish studying and help my mother in her political work’ more involved with the right causes, supporting various charities all around the world and bringing attention to people that most need it. It’s a source of inspiration to me.” A PASSAGE TO ROYALTY Pacho is a feminist. “I’ve grown up surrounded by women – my grandma, my mother, my sister. I am an admirer of women’s strength. I always say that women aren’t equal to men, they’re superior. In the first place, they give us life. Women are capable of so much and they show us how to make sacrifices.” He inherited his title after the death of his maternal grandfather, who had no sons,

country. That is something I’ve learnt from him – to ask people behind the scenes how they are, what their names are, if there is anything you can do for them. “They give their entire lives in the service of some of us. That’s the least we can do.” International polo champion Pacho has played against Charles’s sons the Dukes of Cambridge and Sussex, whom he regards as friends. “They are both wonder ful gentlemen and extremely good polo players. Everyone in the polo community enjoys playing with them and respects them. They are both doing a wonderful job in their various fields and are now getting

but he has no powers in law. Pacho, who lives with his mother – Princess Diya Kumari – and 16-year-old brother the Maharaja Lakshraj Singh of Sirmour (his sister Princess Gauravi Kumari, 20, is at university in New York), still vividly remembers his coronation in 2011 aged just 12, when he sensed the adults around him were turning to him for strength and hope. “To have these important people in my life, people that I looked up to, giving me all this respect and looking at me with eyes that I had never experienced before was a totally different feeling. That really was something that changed my whole life,” he says. His multimillion-pound empire includes hotels, museums, charities and family-run schools. “What I most enjoy about my role is that it’s something that nobody else has done before,” Pacho concludes. “You can mould your future in the way that you’d like. But whatever I am doing, I always have Jaipur at the back of my mind. FINDING NEW PASSION AFTER MARRIAGE SPLIT
LOUISE REDKNAPP
ON SPECIAL MOMENTS WITH HER SONS AND STILL LOVING HER EX JAMIE
Louise is back in the spotlight with Heavy Love. The sassy, sensual album marks a fresh start for the mum of two after 20 her split from husband Jamie. “I’m being a bit sexy, but why the hell shouldn’t I?”

leotard, sways to her new album, Heavy Love. Sassy and self-assured, the singer exudes the confidence of a woman in control, yet it is only now, two years after her divorce from England footballer turned TV pundit Jamie, that she is emerging from a dark tunnel of misery and forging a new future as she embraces her sensuality with her first album in 20 years. “I would never have had the nerve to make this album and dance around in a leotard without going through the tough times,” she exclusively tells hello!. “I would have been so worried about being judged and what people would say about a woman of 45 doing that. “But I’ve reached the stage where there’s nothing that hasn’t been said about me already, so I’ve got nothing to lose. I no longer care what people think and trust my instinct about what I believe is right. I’m a sensitive, kind person, but nobody’s fool. ”

THE LADY IS A VAMP From fresh-faced girl next door in girlband Eternal to tantalising vamp, the mum of two is unapologetic about her powerful new image. “When I started out in the music industry, you were cast as either the wild child or the one with a halo. You got boxed into what your role would be. But I’ve got more fire in me than I had back then. I’m not scared of being sexy. “Ten years ago, I wouldn’t have been confident enough, but now I feel grown up enough to pull it off – and I keep it classy. When I dance in the video, I don’t show any cleavage or boobs. I’m being a bit sexy, but why the hell shouldn’t I? I love it. It feels liberating, empowering.” She also hopes the album, which has been inspired by the whirlwind of emotions she experienced in the 18 months after her

marriage crumbled, will help others going through relationship woes and break-ups. “It’s about the sadness, anxiety and heaviness in your heart over a relationship,” she says. “While I was making it, every day threw up the challenges of anger, heartbreak and frustration.” Louise and Jamie, who have two sons – Charley, 15, and Beau, 11 – had been seen as the golden couple of sport and showbusiness until they announced their split in 2017. The shock news came hot on the heels of Louise reaching the final of Strictly Come Dancing with pro partner Kevin Clifton – but she denies she fell prey to the show’s legendary curse. “Strictly wasn’t the catalyst that led to the breakup,” says Louise. “But it made me realise how much I missed what I’d always done – perform. I’d
been singing and dancing since I was four, but as a wife and mum, something had to give. Jamie and I couldn’t both be out chasing our careers with two small children to care for.” MOVING ON Since Strictly, Louise has returned to the stage with a vengeance and, after playing Sally Bowles in Cabaret , she is starring in musical 9 to 5 in London’s West End. “For so much of my married life I was extremely happy,” she says. “But bit by bit I began to unravel. I felt as if I was a spectator watching my life unfold; I was losing myself and felt very lonely. The lives of everyone around me were so fastpaced, whereas mine felt stagnant.” A flicker of sadness crosses her delicate features as she recalls how some of her friends deserted her

as she was dealing with the emotional repercussions of the break-up. “It was the first time in my life that I saw people fall away,” she says. “That was difficult to deal with. I don’t hold any anger about it now, though.” She was also vilified on social media, which caused her deep distress and made it harder to heal. “Even though neither Jamie nor I had said a bad word against each other – and we never will – I was made to feel like the bad guy,” Louise says. “All kinds of false assumptions were being made and I was the one being judged. “ A n y o n e w h o ’s b e e n

‘Dating apps and swiping right aren’t for me. I’d prefer an old-fashioned invitation to go out for a drink’
Eternal flame: Louise tells us she isn’t ready for a relationship but that It would be “fun” to go on a date. “Whoever I meet will have big shoes to fill,” she says of ex-husband Jamie (together below left) as they bring up sons, Charley and Beau (below right with mum). “After 21 years together how could I not still love him? He’s a great dad and is very proud that our sons love me so much”
through a break-up knows it’s hard enough without such scrutiny. In the end I didn’t know who I was meant to please or what to do. As a result a lot of time was taken from Jamie and me; time when we could have worked at getting over it. “My mum was there for me throughout it all and told me: ‘It’s going to hurt but it will make you stronger.’ She was right. Jamie and I have both come out of it okay and the kids are happy. “Protecting our boys was my number one priority; it was all I cared about,” she says. “And Jamie. I wanted to protect him, too.” Two years after the divorce, Louise’s respect and affection for her ex-husband remain strong. “I still love him,” she says. “After 21 years together how could I not still love him? He’s the father of my boys. Jamie’s a great dad and is very proud that our sons love me so much. He has oldfashioned values and tells them to respect and love their mum. “We have a great system co-parenting them between us. Our rule is that while one of us is working, the other is with them. We both want the kids all the time and encourage the other to go out so that we can have them. “We share everything, too. On Christmas Day we do the presents together, they’re from us both. Maybe this works now because neither of us is in a relationship, but I like to think it will always be like that.” SOMEONE LIKE YOU Louise says that imagining Jamie with a new partner is a sobering thought. “That will be a tough day. I’d love to be able to say it’ll be fine, but to be honest it’s not a moment I’m looking forward to. “Not that I’m ready for a relationship myself. Over the last two years all my energy has gone into my boys, my career, making a new home and feeling confident. It would be nice to enjoy some male company, though. If the right man turns up and sparks fly, who knows where it will lead. I’m the softest, soppiest human being on the planet. I’m not looking to get married again – but I wouldn’t rule it out. Whoever I meet will have big shoes to fill. “It would be fun to go on a date,” continues Louise, who says she has not been asked out for two years. “Dating apps and all that swiping right and left aren’t for me. I’d prefer an old-fashioned invitation to go out for a drink. “I’m not into fancy restaurants, though. I’m down-to-earth and would be happy with fish and chips and a cup of tea, or going for a pizza and tequila in a hoodie and jeans.” Until then, her two boys will remain the most important men in her life. Her eyes light up at the mere mention of them. “One of my proudest moments was when Beau was in the car with me and his friend, listening as we drove along to my new album,” she says. “Suddenly he turned to his friend and said quietly: ‘That’s my mum singing. She’s a pop star.’ If only I could bottle how amazing he H made me feel in that moment.” INTERVIEW: SALLY MORGAN PHOTOS: ALEX MAY STYLING: LORNA McGEE HAIR: CHARLEY McEWAN AT FRANK AGENCY USING LIVING PROOF MAKE-UP: REBEKAH LIDSTONE AT FRANK AGENCY USING EYEKO

LOVE IS BACK ON MENU AS PAIR MAKE A MEAL OF BIRTHDAY CELEBRATIONS here was only one direction in which fans’ conclusions were going to jump after Zayn Malik was pictured arm in arm with former model love Gigi Hadid on the singer’s 27th birthday (left). een-eyed fashion fans might have noticed that one of the models on the catwalk at the Dolce & Gabbana menswear show at Milan Fashion Week looked familiar. It was, in fact, 16-year-old Bobby Brazier (right), the son of Jade Goody and Jeff Brazier, who bears more than a passing resemblance to his late mother (above left, with a two-year-old Bobby). The son of the former Big Brother star made his runway debut for the Italian label after being signed by a modelling agency last year. The Hot Legs singer was pictured leaving landmark London hotel The Ritz (left) at the end of what wife Penny Lancaster described as an evening “with family, friends and Celtic-themed gifts” and after warm goodnights from guests w who included Sir Rod’s son Liam and a

In an earlier Instagram post, Penny revealed that Sir Rod had been discharged from hospital three days after his op and was “doing remarkably well”. stayed exactly where it should be, the 70-yearold star added: “It’s my son’s day so I’m staying out of it.” However, he did add that the couple were “very proud”. Sam, who served as a volunteer firefighter before enrolling on the course, said of finally achieving his ambition: “It wasn’t easy.” Also sharing the 26-year-old’s big moment was his older brother Evan, who is a musician. The only family member not present was the couple’s daughter Jessica, a leading equestrian who competes around the world. Speaking of the diverse trio (left, with mum and dad), Bruce has previously said: “If I can wish for anything for my children, it’s that they can pursue their dreams and know that if things don’t work out, it’s okay. adio presenter Myleene Klass hit the red carpet with two very special guests last week when she joined a host of famous faces to see Cirque du Soleil’s dazzling new acrobatic show Luzia. Stepping out at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Smooth Radio star was not only joined by partner Simon Motson, but their five-monthold son Apollo came along, too. Keeping cosy in a leopard-print hooded top – to co-ordinate with his baby carrier – the new addition to the red-carpet scene stayed cuddled up to daddy for his moment in the spotlight. Mum Myleene was clearly impressed by the action on the stage. “This show, on ne of the most incredible things II’ve ever seen,” she wrote on Instagram m afterwards. Also enjoying a family night out
together were Yasmin Le Bon and her daughter Amber, who made a model pair in black lacy ensembles, despite the January weather. Dancer and ex-Strictly Come Dancing professional Brendan Cole arrived arm-in-arm with wife Zoe, while mum-to-be Lydia Bright cradled her baby bump as she took in the action. ince coming out of the I’m a Celebrity… Get Me S O of Here!! jungle in December, Nadine Out Coylee’ss diary has been jam jam-packed packed as she gears up to release new music. But there’s one person who isn’t so keen on the former Girls Aloud star’s busy spell: her daughter Anaiya, whose father is former American football player Jason Bell. “She doesn’t like me going to work. She’s like: ‘Could you please just not do any more work?’ She’s so sweet and lovely,” smiles Nadine. “She loves being at home, being cosy and getting cuddled up, and I’m all for that.” hello! can reveal that Nadine’s new single All That I Know – a retro-sounding singalong number that she promises is “a very happy song” – will be released on 31 January, Anaiya’s sixth birthday. Thankfully, the track gets the little girl’s seal of approval. “She loves it. She sings along to it. It’s very kidfriendly,” says Nadine as we catch up during hello!’s exclusive photoshoot. “We’re always dancing around the kitchen, and her voice is really starting to come into its own. She’s surprisingly good at really high notes. I’m like: ‘Oh my God, I’ve got a little Mariah Carey on my hands.’”

FRIENDS AND NEIGHBOURS Home for the pair is London. Jason, 41, from whom Nadine split last year, lives just up the street. The California-born former sportsman, who now works for the BBC as an American football pundit, takes Anaiya to school every morning and is very involved in her life. He even spent Christmas with her and Nadine and Nadine’s family in Northern Ireland. “There are no issues, no stress,” says Nadine, 34. “We’re not together as a couple, but I see him every day. We get on great – we were always best friends. You have that thing where you’re really close, and sometimes a friendship can ruin a relationship.” The decision to split – they’ve know each other for 11 years – must have been tough. “Yes, but this feels like the right way to do it. As a mother, sometimes you feel like

She won a legion of faans for her courage facing her fears. T The very first episode saw her conquer one of her greatest terrors – heights – when she had to jump out of a he elicopter. “The morning I le eft to go to Australia I was crying g. The driver felt really bad and diidn’t want to drive off. Anaiya was waving at the door and I wass like: ‘This is brutal – so, so tou ugh.’ But, of course, she wa s fine. Her I’m a Celebrity… campmates Caitlyn Jenner, Adele Roberts and eventual queen of the jungle Jacqueline Jossa surprised her by joining her in renditions of some of the group’s hits. “They knew the moves to Sound of the Underground and The Promise, and they knew the words better than I did. “People are always asking if we’ll do something for our 20-year anniversary. It would be nice, but it takes so much – it’s like moving a mountain. So many people are involved, and it would take a lot of planning and organising. “I’m not thinking about that at the moment, but I’m definitely very fond of everything we’ve done, and it’s always really nice to support each other. We worked together for so long.” S h e ’s g l a d t h a t t h unrelenting pressure of bein an international pop star i behind her. “I would regret not having this time with my daughter. I love music and always will, but to push yourself at such a pace? It was good to do that back then. Now I have the balance of being a working mother. I’m still in music, but I’m also there for Anaiya, which is really important.” SOCIAL ISSUE Candidly, Nadine reveals that her career took a toll on her mental health. “I was so confident when I first began. I had a good grasp of right and wrong
and how I felt about stuff, and then for years you’re in this smoke-and-mirrors world, and I was like: ‘What was I like before? What would I have done before?’ I’ve spent a long time trying to get back that level of confidence and to who I was before. “I was losing sight of myself and started to get anxiety and stress. You work at such a pace and you don’t have time to sit with yourself and think: ‘What do I really think about this? Do I like this, or do I not like this? Am I happy with this, or am I not happy with this?’ “The entertainment thing – you’re there to entertain, it’s not about you, I get that – but for a while I lost my opinion. I was so young I didn’t really know what it was, just that I felt terrible. Keeping your sense of self is important.” She is aware of the pressures young girls face these days with social media, which didn’t exist when Nadine, who is a Diana Award anti-bullying ambassador, was first in Girls Aloud. “

Nadine has regained her confidence and sense of perspective since her Girls Aloud days, on which she reflects with great candour: “For years you’re in this smokeand-mirrors world, and I was like: ‘What was I like before?’”
FRIENDS FOREVER Nadine has a busy year ahead. In addition to her new music, she has other projects in the pipeline. But what about romance? “It gets to the end of the day, Anaiya goes to bed, and I’m like: ‘Am I really going to get ready and go out now? I think not.’ And also, I am the ultimate professional friend-zoner. I have lots of guy friends and I love to go for dinner and have lovely experiences, but ush it any further, to an actual elationship? The Duke of Sussex discussed his future plans at Sandringham with his brother the Duke of Cambridge, grandmother the Queen and father the Prince of Wales
J
ust over two years ago, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent their first Christmas at Sandringham as a couple, with the besotted Prince later telling Radio 4’s Today programme they had an “amazing time”. He described how his fiancée “really enjoyed it and the family really loved having her there,” going on to describe his relatives as “the family that I suppose she’s never had”. Fast forward to 13 January this year and Sandringham was the setting for a far more sombre family gathering.
Five days after the Duke and Duchess of Sussex announced their plans to step back as senior working royals, the Queen summoned Harry, his father the Prince of Wales and his brother the Duke of Cambridge to her Norfolk home for crisis talks. With Meghan thousands of miles away in Canada with their baby son Archie, Harry arrived at Her Majesty’s private home in time for lunch – a chance to discuss his decision with his beloved grandmother in person for the first time. Prince Charles was already there, having flown back the night before from a whirlwind visit to
Oman to pay his condolences after the death of Sultan Qaboos bin Said and meet the new ruler, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said. Prince William arrived at 1.45pm and the Queen, her son and her grandsons sat down together to talk through a “range of possibilities” for the Sussexes’ future, which aides had worked on throughout the weekend. The 98-year-old Duke of Edinburgh, who is largely based at Sandringham, was seen being driven from the house earlier in the day by family friend Countess Mountbatten.
43
‘We respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family’ Amid reports of a painful rift between the royal brothers, William and Harry had already set a conciliatory tone for proceedings by issuing a joint statement, condemning one newspaper’s coverage of their relationship as “false”. Their statement said: “For brothers who care so deeply about the issues surrounding mental health, the use of inflammatory language in this way is offensive and potentially harmful.” The four royals gathered in the Long Library, along with their private secretaries: Sir Edward Young for the Queen; Clive Alderton for Prince Charles; Simon Case for the Duke of Cambridge; and Fiona McIlwham for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Though royal sources had suggested Meghan was “likely to” join the discussions by phone, aides later said that “in the end, the Sussexes decided that it wasn’t necessary for the Duchess to join”.

THE QUEEN SPEAKS Details of the historic meeting were a closely guarded secret last week, with family members going their separate ways again after around 90 minutes. The Queen departed for her rooms at 3.45pm, while Charles was driven to RAF Marham for the helicopter flight back to his Birkhall home on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland. Harry left moments later, while William stayed behind for another 40 minutes before driving himself via a back route to the Cambridges’ Norfolk home, Anmer Hall. Her Majesty later described the talks as “very constructive” in a direct statement issued by Buckingham Palace. In a poignant and deeply personal message, she spoke as a grandmother as well as head of the royal family – offering her support for the Sussexes, but also expressing sadness at the move. “My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family,” read the statement. “Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family.” Announcing a “period of transition” during which the couple will spend time in both Canada and the UK, the Queen added: “Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives.” And she made clear her own desire for a solution to be found as soon as possible, saying:
‘These are complex matters for my family to resolve’ Prince Harry greets his beloved grandmother with a tender kiss as he shows her around his Sentebale charity’s garden at the Chelsea Flower Show in 2013. Her Majesty last week spoke of her regret that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wished to step down as full-time royals but said she was “entirely supportive” of their wishes. The summit was held in Sandringham’s library – a bowling alley (below left) until Edward VII had it converted funded while they are in Canada. The cost of their Metropolitan Police protection team is currently met by the British taxpayer. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said last week: “I think most Canadians are very

EMILY NASH – hello!’s royal editor atching Harry on d u t y a t Buckingham Palace last week, I was reminded of just how good he is at the public part of his work. His natural ability to connect with people and shine a spotlight on causes will not be diminished by a change in his royal status. We can only hope that his and Meghan’s new life will bring them happiness and peace after what has clearly been a troubled period. Reflecting on their engagement interview in November 2017, it’s hard to believe how much has changed – and how, sadly, a family has apparently become estranged. Announcing their engagement, the couple praised the “solid support” they had received from the royals and Meghan told how they were “progressively helping me feel a part of not just the institution but also part of the family, which
W
has been really, really special”. She described her future sister-in-law Kate as having been “wonderful”, Harry adding: “Amazing, as has William, you know, fantastic support. And my father as well.” Last week, amid reports of rifts in the royal family, friends of the Duchess told US media she was leaving a “toxic” situation. But the Queen’s own words after the Sandringham summit reiterated the royal family’s support for the couple. She quietly revealed her sadness while reminding the world that the couple will always be a “valued part” of her family. The Queen understands the pressure of being thrust into a prominent role, having herself become heir apparent aged ten when her uncle Edward VIII abdicated. She also recalls the frustration of her husband, Prince Philip, after he gave up his naval career to support her in her duties. Whatever the outcome of the ongoing negotiations about the Sussexes’ future, the monarch and her family will continue with business as usual, as they always do.

Royal aides are thought to be keen to define how the couple can become “financially independent” – the intention they announced in their statement – without being seen to be trading off their royal status. Harry and Meghan have already applied to trademark a range of items and activities with the Sussex Royal brand, while a company linked to Meghan, Frim Fram Inc., was moved from California to the US state of Delaware – where companies do not have to disclose the owner’s name – in December. Meanwhile the couple will launch a charitable foundation in the spring, which they hope will raise H millions for various projects. REPORT: EMILY NASH

THE DUKE OF SUSSEX
HELLO! JOINS HIM AT THE PALACE AS HE TACKLES THE RUGBY LEAGUE WORLD CUP DRAW T
he Duke of Sussex showed he hasn’t lost his sense of humour when he made his first official appearance since he and the Duchess announced their plans to step back as “senior” working royals. At Buckingham Palace to host the official draw for the Rugby League World Cup 2021, Prince Harry was determined for it to be business as usual – at least for that day. The Duke, who is patron of the RFL, clowned around during the draw, laughed out loud when a reporter asked how discussions on his future were going and joked with Australian comedian Adam Hills as they talked beards. “The beard is fantastic,” Harry told the host of Channel 4’s The Last Leg, who plays disability rugby league for Warrington Wolves. “I love the fact that it is manicured in the middle. It is so beautiful. I’ve never seen that – and I’ve seen some beards.” The Duke also said he had been invited to appear on Adam’s chat show, which he said “breaks down barriers every single time”. “I’ve tried to come onto it,” he said. “I’ve had an invitation, but we’ve never managed to make it happen.” Speaking later, Adam said he had told the Duke: “I promised that I would grow this [beard] until Brexit was sorted and that it should be coming off on the 31st of January. And he said: ‘Well, let’s see.’” As for Harry’s mood, he added: “I’ve never seen him not in a good place. He is always friendly, always chatty.” Earlier, in the palace gardens, the Duke chatted to wheelchair rugby star James Simpson and Women’s Super League player Jodie Cunningham and watched pupils from St Vincent de Paul Catholic Primary School in central London playing tag rugby on the lawn.
Telling the youngsters he wasn’t dressed to join them, he asked them: “Look after the grass, though, yeah? Otherwise I’ll get into trouble.” WINNING WAYS Inside the palace’s Throne Room, Harry joined former Olympic rower Dame Katherine Grainger and ex-rugby league and rugby union star Jason Robinson for the draw of the men’s, women’s and wheelchair tournaments. Afterwards, Jason said it was “brilliant” to see the Duke. “It doesn’t matter what is going on in the background, wherever he goes he still delivers,” said the England hero. “He is very respectful, very warm, very endearing. “If you look at what Prince Harry has done to date, he cares about people – physically, mentally. He has gone all over the world inspiring, caring, looking after people. I don’t think that will change. [In] what capacity he does that, going forward, will be up to him. When you’ve got that in you, it will go wherever he is.” Jon Dutton, chief executive of the Rugby League World Cup 2021, also praised the Duke, saying: “He was authentic, engaging, genuinely passionate about what we are doing. He just has such a terrific interest in sport.” As well as the draw last week, Harry also announced that Düsseldorf in Germany will be the host city for the 2022 Invictus Games, his Paralympics-style tournament for wounded, injured or sick armed forces personnel. Speaking in a video message, he said: “I hope everyone in Germany is ready for what will be an incredible week of sport. I have no doubt that the German public H will get right behind these Games.” REPORT: EMILY NASH

to make her first public appearance since the dramatic announcement that she and her husband the Duke want to step back from senior royal life. After a tumultuous period during which Meghan and Prince Harry, 35, announced their plans to live parttime in Canada with their eightmonth-old son Archie, the 38-yearold Duchess left Vancouver Island, in British Columbia, to visit two women’s charities on the mainland.
Wrapped up against the Canadian winter in a Barbour jacket and brown leather Le Chameau boots, the Duchess looked happy and relaxed as she climbed onto the Whistler Air seaplane, accompanied on the flight by her Metropolitan Police security team. It was the first sighting of Meghan since her return to British Columbia after making a brief trip to the UK for an official visit to Canada House in London with Prince Harry – their first public engagement after a seven-week Christmas and New Year sabbatical in Canada. Meanwhile,

Harry remained in the UK for an emergency summit last week with the Queen, the Prince of Wales and the Duke of Cambridge. Besides keeping busy with her charity visits, Meghan also welcomed one of her close friends to Canada last Thursday. She was at the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery to collect Los Angelesbased Pilates instructor Heather Dorak from Victoria International Aiport and is believed to have driven her back to the £10m waterside mansion where she and Harry stayed during their break on the island. Wearing sunglasses and a beanie hat, Meghan looked thrilled to see her friend, whom she has credited with keeping her in shape, and who was a guest at the 2018 royal wedding.

TEA WITH THE DUCHESS Two days earlier, Meghan called in at the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, in one of Vancouver’s most disadvantaged areas, which provides emergency shelter, meals and training to vulnerable women and their children. Delighted, the centre posted a photo of Meghan with a group of eight women on Facebook, writing: “Look who we had tea with today! The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, visited us today to discuss issues affecting women in the community.” The Duchess also went to the headquarters of Justice for Girls to “discuss climate justice for girls and the rights of Indigenous peoples”, the women’s rights group wrote on Twitter. “Was great to talk about the importance of a holistic approach to social justice, and

Heather attended the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in May 2018 with her husband, businessman Matt Cohen (together inset left). Posting a photo on Instagram afterwards, she wrote: “A special friend married a wonderful guy surrounded by the love of incredible people. A weekend we will never forget” the power of young women’s leadership,” they added, along with two photos. Aides said the Duchess’s visits were made in a private capacity. Women’s issues have always been at the heart of Meghan’s charity work and she is a passionate advocate of gender equality and female empowerment. COURT BATTLE Meghan’s outing came as court documents emerged exposing the breakdown in the former actress’s relationship with her 75-year-old father Thomas Markle. TALKING CHILDREN, MENTAL HEALTH AND HARMONY
THE DUKE AND DUCHESS OF CAMBRIDGE ARE A ‘CLASS ACT’ ON A VISIT TO BRADFORD he Duke and Duchess of Cambridge T kept calm and carried on last week on a trip to Bradford in West Yorkshire,
s
where they visited projects that support and promote community cohesion. Despite the drama of the previous week, William and Kate were all smiles as they greeted the crowds, cuddled toddlers, shared sweet updates on Prince Louis’s progress and giggled as they made milkshakes. Wrapped up against the chill in a mossgreen coat by Alexander McQueen over a houndstooth dress from Zara, and with earrings from Pakistani retailer Zeen, Kate dazzled as she chatted to well-wishers outside City Hall in Centenary Square. She hugged Josh Macpalce, 25, after finding out he had sent her a card after the birth of each of her three children. Josh, who is autistic and has DiGeorge syndrome, asked whether she might have another child. “I don’t think William wants any more,” she replied. She also chatted to children from Moorfield School in nearby Ilkley. “It’s so nice to see you,” she said. “I love your uniforms, you look so smart. Are you cold?”

The Duke accepted several bouquets of flowers for his wife, and the couple shared a romantic moment when he took a single rose from one and presented it to her. William was also handed a late birthday card for Kate from Rayhan Hussain, 15, who told hello!: “It was a birthday message and I just said what an amazing woman she is and how thankful I am that she visited my
home town. I love her commitment and dedication to her work and her patronages, especially her work with mental health and early years.” “Are you all freezing?” William asked one cheering group. “This is the noisy corner. You are in fine voice.” Leanne Jones, 33, from Halifax, chatted to the Duke, later telling hello!: “I told William he’s an inspiration and to carry on doing

MAKING AN IMPACT Inside City Hall the Duke and Duchess met young volunteers, community workers and local business figures, and William talked about the need for better “mental fitness”. “We all look after our bodies, go to the gym, keep fit, but we need to think about our mental fitness each day, too,” he said. Charity leader Adeeba Malik told the couple: “Your trip to Pakistan, please don’t underestimate the importance of it… It was so powerful.” “We loved it,” William grinned. There was more reminiscing about their visit to Pakistan in October at the flagship MyLahore restaurant, which runs apprenticeships for local college students and provides free meals to the homeless and needy. The chain’s chief executive Asghar Ali said the restaurant was inspired by the Pakistani city of Lahore, which the royals visited during their trip. “We had the most wonderful time, it was amazing, everyone was so welcoming,” said the Duke. “It wasn’t until we were in the country that we could really appreciate how culture, food and the community are everything. It was an amazing experience.”

‘I don’t think William wants any more [children]’ The Duchess of Cambridge After taking turns to make mango and kulfi milkshakes, William and Kate spoke to boxing star Amir Khan, who was born and raised in Bolton. He and his wife Faryal are expecting their third child, a boy, next month. Amir told the royal couple: “[Faryal] really wanted to meet you but she just couldn’t leave the house as she’s heavily pregnant at the moment.” “That’s such wonderful news,” replied Kate. The boxer – nicknamed “King” Khan – told William: “I’ve seen what you’ve been doing with mental health – it’s amazing. Please, if there’s anything I can do for you, with your charities, in the UK or in Pakistan, please let me know, I would love to help.” He also weighed in on the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s decision to step back from being senior royals and balance their time between the UK and North America, saying: “Every family has its difficulties for sure, but it’s about sitting together and resolving them.”

A DOUBLE-TAKE Saadia Mushtaq from the Muslim Women’s Council noticed that Kate was wearing the same Zeen earrings she had worn in Pakistan. She said: “I noticed her earrings straight away and Kate was really impressed. She told me she loved the designer and she loved Pakistan. She was so lovely, and William was so interested in the project. They were a real class act together.” At the Khidmat Centre, the couple were presented with an elaborate cake by Siama Ali of local business Cup Caker. It was decorated with edible picture frames containing photos of the couple and their children. William did a double-take when he spotted a photo of himself aged ten, briefly mistaking it for one of his daughter Princess Charlotte. “Is that me? Or is that Charlotte? Is that me?” he asked. “Oh my goodness, that looks just like Charlotte. That is incredible.” The couple joined a session led by Better Start Bradford, which works with pregnant women and families with children under the age of four, and met grandparents who have completed the Older Yet Wiser workshop on caring for grandchildren. JoBroadbent, wholooksafterhergranddaughter, told hello!: “I asked [Kate] how her children were. I was devastated,” recalls Amy, who believes the shock of the event contributed to the subsequent onset of labour. “That night, my waters broke in bed at 1am and within two hours, I was having three contractions every ten minutes. Two midwives came and things progressed really quickly, but as the pain built up, labour slowed down.” On the advice of her midwives, Amy tried to “give her baby time to move around”, seeking comfort from the warmth of her balcony hot tub, gentle walks and lower back massages from Daniel, which temporarily relieved the overbearing back pain. But after 46 hours, she and Daniel decided to o to St Thomas’ Hospital in central London, where doctors said Demelza had become

But he’s gone above and beyond. “I didn’t change a nappy for the first five days. Every time I tried, he’d go: ‘No, that’s my job.’ It’s really made me appreciate having such a good partner. He said: ‘If we make them this cute, we’re going to have to make loads more.’” Amy, a former Miss Universe finalist who has appeared on I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! and The Jump, has taken a step out of the public eye to focus on building her beauty brand HairFlick. However, she’s not ruling out a return to TV. “I’m getting jealous watching Dancing on Ice,” she says. “I’d love to do something like that. After I’m a Celebrity…, when my career was really
at its peak, I got quite lost. I didn’t have any stability and my whole life was about the next job. Now I’ve found a really good balance.’ Amy takes an equally balanced view of her post-pregnancy body. “I look at my body and think: ‘I love you so much,’ because it gave me my daughter,” she tells us. “I put on 17kg [2st 9lb] during the pregnancy, which is more than average, but I’m very chilled about it. She shot to the top of the A-list with S The Wolf of Wall Street and in the past T yyear has co-starred i n Once Upon a Time in Hollywood T aand with Charlize Theron and Nicole T in Kidman Bombshell, the story B of women con´o ffronting sexual harassment at US h TV network Fox. T In the film, Margot plays Kayla Pospisil, a fictional office intern based P on several women who fell victim o t o Fox chief Roger Ailes’s sexual harassment. It has gained her a fistful h of awards and nominations, including o a Best Supporting Actress Oscars nod. But more important than the nominations was working with two n women she had admired for years, w she says when we meet in Los Angeles. ““Although as it turned out, we only had the one scene all together.” h It is, however, a doozie: the three women, each locked in an individual w battle with Roger Ailes, walk into the b same lift at Fox News; while barely a word is spoken, the atmosphere could w be cut with a knife. b “That scene wasn’t even in the film when I first got the script,” Margot w says. “It was just Charlize and me and no one else was on board yet. And n t hen when it turned into the ccombination of Charlize, Nicole and me, everyone was like: ‘Whoa, we have m to put them all into a scene together.’ “I loved that scene because it
symbolised exactly these women’s predicament – they were isolated, they weren’t reaching out to each other, they were all three stuck inside their own prisons. And that was what happened: Roger pitted women against each other, which he did deliberately because he was aware that when women combine forces, they’re pretty unstoppable.” Margot is a firm woman’s woman, saying: “The best thing in my life is my girls group from Oz – we’ve been best friends since we were four.” A farm girl and proud of it, she is thankful to have been brought up in a setting that differs hugely from her life today. “I’m very grateful that the upbringing I had was so far removed from film-making,” she says. “My parents actually thought acting was just a hobby for me and kept asking me when I was going to go to university and get a real job. They understand now that this is what I really do with my life. But they definitely didn’t realise that for a couple of years.” It undoubtedly helps their understanding that Margot has married a fellow professional, Surreyborn director and producer Tom Ackerley, with whom she has various professional projects in the pipeline. “I quickly figured out that I didn’t have time to do all the things I wanted to do – work, friends, fun – as much as I wanted to do them, so I mushed them all together,” she says. “These days, I work with my friends and I work with my husband and I have a ton of fun working, and it’s a pretty sweet deal in my eyes.” After sharing a rambling house in London with a shifting cast of other people, Margot and Tom now live in LA. But the actress is firm that she is and will remain an Aussie. Which is why, this month, she shared a plea on Instagram for funds to help fight the fires ravaging her beloved homeland, asking for donations – “anything you can… whatever you would have spent on yyour next cup of coffee” – to help bring relief to the afflicted area. b “Let’s give future generations the kind of childhood I was so k H llucky to have,” she ends. DIONNE BROMFIELD
he day Dionne Bromfield T discovered a huge stack of vinyls belonging to her mother opened her up to a whole new world of music. “I remember holding one up and thinking: ‘What is this?’ I couldn’t understand how it fitted in the CD compartment,” she smiles as she recalls the moment she chanced upon the collection of Motown records in a cupboard. “Then I found an old turntable, and the first record I played was Marvin Gaye and Ta m m i Te r r e l l ’s A i n ’ t N o Mountain High Enough. It was a whole moment, listening to an incredible song on something I didn’t even know existed.” Fifteen years on, the young singer-songwriter’s passion is just as strong. “I’m an old-school girl. I will probably die listening to Marvin Gaye. If you want to be the best, then you have to learn from the best,” says Dionne, who turns 24 next month and speaks with a maturity beyond her years.

learning period, not just on the musical front but as a girl growing up. It’s a big chunk of life, of finding yourself and what you like.” For someone so young, Dionne has amassed a wealth of experience. Her early career was co-managed by her mother – “amazing single mum” Julie – who named her daughter after Celine Dion. “When she was giving birth to me she had Celine Dion playing in the background. She loved her, so I was going to be either Celine or Dion, and she went with Dion but the way that Dionne Warwick spells it.” Her mother also worked with several bands, including The Libertines and Babyshambles, and was good friends with singer Amy Winehouse, who became D i o n n e ’s g o d m o t h e r a n d mentor, signing the youngster to her Lioness Records label. “It probably does seem quite a starry upbringing,” Dionne agrees. “But to me these were just our friends, people who came to our house.” She does, however, admit to being slightly in awe when she visited Kate Moss’s home. “She had the best bathroom I have ever been in,” she laughs.

With more than a decade of experience, Dionne is ready for the next stage in her career: “I was very shy when I was younger, almost nervous going out to sing. Now I am more sure of myself”
FRANK TALK Dionne’s relationship with Amy was special. “I think with me she felt she could be herself – I was just a young kid. And I would call her Aunty Amy. She asked my mum if she could be my godmother, and she was like a second mother to me. There was stuff that I would tell her that I didn’t mention to my mum. Amy was the biggest inspiration you could ever hope for. To have someone that musical and that talented mentoring me was incredible.” The pair occasionally performed together in public, the first time on Strictly Come Dancing in 2009, when Dionne was just 13. “I was so excited but so nervous. I am glad I have that footage to look back on. She was very much: ‘This is about you. I don’t want it to be about me.’ She was very proud. I hope she would be proud of me now.” Of Amy’s death in 2011 aged 27 after battling drug and alcohol addictions, Dionne says: “I didn’t know how to react or how to show my emotions. It hit me more two or three years after. It’s why I took such a break. Even now I can’t listen to her music because it is a sadness

‘Amy was like a second mother to me. I would tell her stuff that I didn’t mention to my mum’ I feel. I don’t want to have to make myself remember certain things as then I am reminded of the good times I miss.” It was Amy who encouraged Dionne to start writing her own music, “as my first album was all covers”. “I said: ‘I don’t know what to write about. All I do is get the bus and go to school.’ And she said: ‘That is something, start with that.’ “If she hadn’t encouraged me to write, I probably wouldn’t have done. Although I’m talkative, I’m a bit of a closed book when it comes to my emotions.” She now feels better able to write and sing from experience. “Bad Intentions came from a situation with a guy where we both knew it wasn’t ever really going to work between us but we enjoyed each other’s company.” There is no one special in her life right now. “I live with my mum in East London. We are very close. I wouldn’t say she is my best friend as she hates that. She says: ‘I am not your best friend, I am your mother.’ But we have that relationship where I can tell her everything.” Julie is no longer involved in her career. “She said: ‘I trust you to find your own way. Spread your wings, girl, and fly.’” Looking back, does she feel she missed out on her childhood by being thrust into an adult world at such a young age? “My days back then were: get up at 6.30, be at school by 8.30, finish at 4, go to the studio until 11, fit in homework, and repeat. That was my normal. You go one of two ways – either you go stupid and silly, or you have to mature and wise up.” Dionne attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School from the age of 14, a year after her debut a l b u m I n t ro d u c i n g D i o n n e Bromfield was released, and by the time she was 16 had been a support act for Bruno Mars and The Wanted. “I am glad I started singing and performing at a young age. adio and TV presenter Rochelle Humes has become a household name since finding fame as a member of former girl group The Saturdays. As well as being a regular guest presenter on ITV’s This Morning, she hosts BBC1’s music quiz show The Hit List with her husband Marvin. Her charisma has gained her more than 1.6 million Instagram fans – a following that’s only going to grow next month with the launch of her family hair and skincare brand My Little Coco. “It’s a different year for me because I’m a boss lady now, which is petrifying,” laughs the 30-year-old mother of two. “It’s my baby, my own actual business.” Rochelle has also teamed up with beauty subscription service Birchbox – which sends a range of hand-picked products to subscribers every month – to choose her own edit. “In the last few years I’ve really learned to embrace what makes me me, so I love the idea of delivering products personalised to you.” Speaking exclusively to hello!, Rochelle shares her day-to-day beauty products and reveals how she’s teaching her daughters Alaia-Mai, six, and Valentina, two, the power of self-acceptance. Rochelle, what’s the best beauty advice you’ve been given? “The basic lesson my mum taught me – to always take your make-up off. I can’t tell you a time when I have gone to sleep with my make-up on. Even after a boozy night, it just would never happen. “The best little tip I’ve had is coconut oil – it’s a key beauty product for me. I get a big jar of Vita Coco and use it as a hair mask and a scalp treatment. It’s really good for spots, too, which I couldn’t believe but it’s an antiseptic. It’s my secret ingredient.” Which make-up products do you use daily? “I use a bit of concealer – Estée Lauder’s Double Wear is the only thing that doesn’t go crepey under my eyes. I also use Eyebrow Queen’s Brow Fix. I brush my brows up then use it to keep them in place. “If I’m just doing the school run, it’s concealer and a bit of lip balm. I love Sisley’s Nutritive lip balm. There’s also a really good highlighter I love from Chantecaille – Liquid Lumière Anti Aging Illuminator. It’s really nice for when you’re on holiday and don’t have much make-up on, but equally it sits on top of foundation nicely.” You’ve collaborated with Birchbox; what do you love about beauty subscription services? “I’m such a product junkie, and the best thing about this kind of service is that you can try so many products. That’s the only way you find what you like – trial and error. “In my edit for Birchbox I’ve included a Philip Kingsley conditioner – I’m obsessed with its products – and a Mélusine jade roller. I get the same car to work every day and I keep a jade roller in the back so I can depuff my eyes on the way in.”
90
Which steps in your beauty regime do you never skip? “Since I’ve worn my hair curly for the past couple of years, I have regular hair masks and
treatments. I use Philip Kingsley’s Elasticizer deep-conditioning treatment with a bit of coconut oil. My hair drinks moisture, so I use masks once or twice a week. There’s also a spray from Twisted Sista called 30 Second Curl that I use to bring the life back into my curls. “I am religious with face washes, too, and use a vitamin C cream and SPF in the morning. I’ve been using PCA Skin products for a year now and they’re really effective. And as I get older I’m starting to get breakouts when I haven’t before. My skin has also become sensitive to stress, sleep and hormones. “I like a good facial, too, and try to do that once a month. During the winter I use more moisturiser and more lip balm. I use a lip pencil from MAC in Spice, then I use the Sisley lip balm rather than any lip gloss. It keeps my lips hydrated and less sticky.” Does Marvin ever borrow your products? “Marvin is one of those irritating people who just has the best skin and he does nothing to it. He washes his face under the shower with shower gel and puts a bit of cream on after – but it’s any cream he takes from the side.” What makes you feel confident? “I don’t know, actually. I feel like I’m quite confident. I have moments where I don’t feel as confident but I’m one of those people who just ‘fakes it ‘til I make it’. I think: ‘Okay Rochelle, you’ve got this.’ Even if I don’t feel like I have, I tell myself I have.” Your children’s book, The Mega Magic Hair Swap!, is about celebrating and accepting our differences. How do you teach your girls about self-love and acceptance? “Every guy and every girl will go through a phase where they’re like: ‘Oh, I want to be like them.’ I try to teach my kids that being you is what makes you special, and that’s where your beauty lies. I’ve always tried to push that message. I think that’s really important for this Instagram generation.” How important is representation in the beauty and entertainment industries? “So important. They have become a lot more diverse in race, sexuality, age and gender, but there is still a lot of work to do. I can’t wait to
get to a place where it will be like: ‘Remember when you could only get a job if you were male?’ It will be nice when it’s in the past.” How do you relax? “When my kids are in bed and everyone has left me alone, I want some quiet time to watch a box set and switch off or have a hot bath. It’s very simple. I try different things in my bath – Weleda’s Citrus Refreshing Bath Milk is lovely.” Do you have a signature scent? “I wear Molecule 01 by Escentric Molecules. I started wearing it when I was pregnant with Alaia because everything I smelt made me feel sick, but you can’t smell this on yourself.” Do you ever feel body conscious? “Of course, but I’ve got to the stage where I murmur in my mind for a minute and then I’m like: ‘No, come on now.’ I appreciate my body and what it’s done – carrying two babies and birthing two children.” What would you tell your younger self? “Don’t put pressure on yourself. There’s no schedule or time limit on anything. Everything will work itself out. If you’re supposed to do something, you will. I think a lot of young people worry that they should be doing things by a certain age. It’s crazy.” Are you good at sticking to resolutions? “I’ve got quite a lot of self-control. If it’s something that I really want to do, I do it. However, I’ve got no self-control when it comes to giving up dessert.” What does 2020 have in store for you? “My Little Coco is out in February. From newborn right the way up, there are seven different products, including bath wash, shampoo and conditioner. It’s been three years in the making and is my first actual business, not a licensing deal. It’s been so stressful but amazing at the same time. I can’t believe it’s actually happening now. I feel like the grey hairs are going to start sprouting soon.” The Rochelle Humes January Birchbox is available now. Subscriptions to Birchbox start from £10 per month (plus £2.95 P&P). Are your diet resolutions starting to wane? Louise Parker explains how not to fall off the wagon
Lifestyle transformation is at the very core of what I do – and I’m the first to admit, it isn’t easy. I’ve had my own battles with yo-yo dieting, which led to me create the Louise Parker Method – a dietitiansupported programme that blends CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) and NLP (neurolinguistic programming) – as a way of helping others disembark from the rollercoaster. Obesity is a condition that ‘Don’t beat suppresses one’s zest for life and sets us up for diabetes, heart yourself up if disease and cancer. Yet the you haven’t statistics on sustained weight-loss are staggeringly bad. stuck to a success Within the “diet industry”, the gruelling weight- success rate can be as low as 5%. no way we would accept loss plan. Feel There’s these figures with other lifeno shame in changing conditions. Saying that, I totally get why asking for help’ people are tempted by shortcut weight-loss “options” (let’s not call them solutions – solutions, by definition, last). I’ve done them and I suspect that you have, too – juice cleanses, colonics… the list is a catalogue of disasters, each attempt worsening your faith in yourself. Eventually, your mind and body fight back if you set out on a journey where weight loss is the primary goal. At Louise Parker, we see impressive results and a mindset primed for the longterm when
clients adopt a more holistic approach; by shifting the focus away from weight – and by concentrating on finding pleasure in new habits – the pounds take care of themselves. When weight loss starts to plateau, you also need the tools and knowledge to get things going again – and to keep your mind motivated. Your metabolism slows when you lose muscle mass, so we carefully monitor clients to make sure they are losing dormant body fat as opposed to muscle that shapes and tones. Make sure that you avoid any “diet programme” that promises weight loss of more than 2lb a week. If it seems too good to be true, it’s probably just melting muscle. I once had a client who attended a weightloss retreat and he bounced back into the clinic a few weeks later citing an 8kg (17lb) weight loss. When I popped him on my machine, all of what he’d lost was muscle – all of it. And after a further seven weeks of intensive personal training, he had recovered just half of it. So many people embark on a post-Christmas gruelling weight-loss plan – don’t beat yourself up if you’ve been unable to stick to something unsustainable. Feel no shame in asking for help, but be careful who you ask. You should always consider: “Is it likely I will still be doing at least 70% of this programme in five years’ time?” If the answer is “no”, walk away and make a pact to do things more intelligently this year. Be kind to yourself, too.

CAMILLA SACRE-DALLERUP

A

routine day in Los Angeles for Camilla Sacre-Dallerup sounds idyllic: waking up to clear blue skies and hiking in the hills above Sherman Oaks where she lives. However, it’s in London where the former Strictly Come Dancing professional feels most at home. Although born in Denmark, she adopted the capital as her home many years ago. “It always will be. I like walking around the city and being reminded of all the amazing memories here. The UK was the place my dreams came true in dancing,” says 45-year-old Camilla, who won the Glitterball trophy with actor Tom Chambers in 2008 before leaving the popular TV series. A successful life coach, hypnotherapist and author in California, Camilla is back in the UK to celebrate the recent publication of her third book, It’s Not You It’s Me: How to Heal Your Relationship with Yourself and Others. While here she met up with many of her Strictly friends, including Karen Hauer, Flavia Cacace-Mistry and Katya Jones. “I have so many memories of my time on Strictly but the most magical has to be the final night’s showdance with Tom and winning the trophy,” says Camilla, who for the past two years has been a judge on Dancing with the Stars in New Zealand. Saying goodbye to the life ‘There was a time when she knew and heading to LA I thought that loving was a huge step into the someone or being loved unknown. “I had been an and at the top of my would “complete me”. expert game so to start over from To realise we are whole scratch was daunting but the best thing I’ve ever already was a revelation’ simply done. I’ve carried on in jobs and relationships in the past because of the fear of the unknown and facing the void,” says Camilla, whose earlier self-help book, Reinvent Me, was written to inspire others to change their careers. “Let’s be clear, though, it was hard work but worth it. It was a huge part of me finding my way to who I truly am.”
DON’T MISS THIS WEEK… TELEVISION NEXT IN FASHION Model Alexa Chung and Queer Eye star Tan France (together right) host this high-stakes Netflix competition, which sees 18 designers compete for $250,000 (£192,000) and the chance to launch their collection with retailer Net-a-Porter. The contestants, who have all worked for major brands or dressed A-list celebrities, will go head-to-head in challenges that focus on the world’s biggest fashion trends. On Netflix from 29 January. Camilla (above, enjoying the Californian life with her husband of ten years, former Hollyoaks actor Kevin Sacre) surprises her ex-Strictly dance colleagues, including Karen Hauer and Katya Jones (beside her, below far left), by dropping in on a Strictly tour rehearsal with gifts to celebrate the launch of her book
A strong message at the heart of her new book is that you need to love yourself in order to be loved. So has Camilla – who was once engaged to former Strictly professional Brendan Cole – struggled with that at times in her past? “Absolutely. I like to think I’m a coach who walks the walk, and part of how I can help support others is due to my own life experience as well as my professional training. “There was a time when I thought that loving someone or being loved would ‘complete me’. To realise we are whole and enough already, and the power of self-love, was a revelation. After realising that, I made different choices and I was aware of what I was looking for in a partner.”

TRANQUIL LIFESTYLE
Camilla has found happiness with her husband of ten years, former Hollyoaks actor Kevin Sacre, who quit acting and is an investment advisor in LA as well as creative partner in her coaching and hypnosis business, Zenme. “The expression we both used when we came together was: ‘It’s easy.’ Easy in the sense of no games and it feels right. We started out being friends and communication flowed.” It was exactly a year after their first date that Kevin proposed on the island of Capri and, 12 months later, in 2010, they tied the knot in Ibiza. When they decided to move to LA in 2014, neither knew what was in store but Camilla believes her tranquil lifestyle, starting each day with meditation, which she also teaches, has helped improve her mental wellbeing. “It has encouraged me to take time for myself and there are always people you can turn to who take mental health as seriously as having a healthy diet so it makes it the norm. The weather helps. Blue skies do something to the soul.” She applauds the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Duke and Duchess of Sussex for putting the spotlight on mental health, and encouraging men to talk, too. “It’s so needed. To think that some suffer in silence because they are scared that they’ll be judged is awful and we need to move beyond this.” Strictly’s Karen recently credited Camilla with helping her “through some of my most challenging times over the past few years. She gave me the tools to help me heal, strengthen and understand the meaning of being myself from the inside out”. “I felt so touched by her words,” Camilla tells us. “I have said this before but helping someone else and watching them blossom is the best. It’s better than winning a trophy.” INTERVIEW: JANE DOWDESWELL
It’s Not You It’s Me by Camilla Sacre-Dallerup is out now, published by Watkins Publishing, priced £9.99.
TOUR THE SOUND OF MUSIC The hills – and the UK and Ireland – are alive with the sound of music as the family favourite musical begins its latest tour in Dublin. Emilie Fleming, a finalist on BBC1’s Over the Rainbow, stars as Maria, while former Coronation Street actor Andrew Lancel reprises his role as Captain von Trapp. Fabulously staged and packed with memorable songs. The enduring story of racial injustice and childhood innocence follows Atticus and his children Scout and Jem in 1930s Alabama. At London’s Gielgud Theatre from 11 June. For tickets, visit tokillamockingbird.co.uk.
FILM THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD Charles Dickens’s classic tale gets a starry makeover as Dev Patel (left with Aneurin Barnard, far left), Game of Thrones’s Gwendoline Christie and Tilda Swinton star in this adaptation, directed by The Thick of It creator Armando Iannucci. It follows David’s journey from poor orphan to burgeoning writer. In cinemas from 24 January.
BOOK SUCH A FUN AGE This razor-sharp debut from Kiley Reid brilliantly covers race, prejudice and social commentary within a fascinating story. Privileged Alix is drawn into a social media drama when her black babysitter Emira is accused of kidnapping her daughter during a late-night trip to a Philadelphia supermarket. The ensuing fall-out sees them on a collision course where their past histories come back to haunt them. Out now, published by Bloomsbury.

STAR ESCAPES Paro STAY
INDULGE
Shrouded by a fragrant pine forest and gazing out to snowcapped Jhomolhari, the tranquil Amankora Paro Lodge (2) is a clutch of 24 elegant suites combining traditional materials with contemporary design. There’s a mindmellowing spa and fire pits for gathering around come sundown; the living room, with its thick-cushioned daybeds, is ideal for relaxation and there are birth chart readings and prayer flag-printing sessions and blessings by local monks. It’s a triumph, and a terrific base from which to explore the Paro valley’s otherworldly expanses.
The Aman Spa is balm for mind, body and soul. Here, treatments are anchored to age-old Bhutanese traditions. The hot oil head massage, featuring warmed coconut oil and long, soothing strokes, helps to release deep-rooted emotional stress, though after the gruelling ramble up to the Tiger’s Nest monastery, nothing breathes life back into sore muscles like a soak in a Bhutanese hot stone bath infused with the healing herb khempa.
