On a drizzly autumn evening, the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts became a stage where classical music's future met its past. The Vancouver Metropolitan Orchestra (VMO), led by Maestro Ken Hsieh, hosted the highly anticipated ' Pops and Classics' concert. Featuring a rich and diverse programme, the evening's standout performance came from 17-year-old Ryan Wang, the guest pianist whose star continues to rise on the international stage.

A Programm to Remember

The concert opened with energy and innovation. Composer-in-residence Aidan Mulldoon Wong debuted a stirring world premiere, a modern piece that resonated deeply with the audience. Ryan Wang took the stage, embodying a unique blend of youthful energy and seasoned artistry. From the moment he began to play, the audience was captivated. Ryan's career trajectory is nothing short of extraordinary. At just four, he began playing piano, and by five, he had made his solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall. Since then, he has graced stages worldwide, including Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and Salle Cortot. His performances have been broadcast by international media such as CBC Music, CCTV in China, and FM 96.3 Toronto.

Beyond his performances, Ryan has represented Canada in high-profile cultural events, including a private recital at the Canadian Prime Minister's residence and Canada's participation in the APEC Summit in Beijing.

A String of Triumphs

Since 2019, Ryan has accumulated numerous accolades, affirming his status as one of classical music's brightest young stars. Highlights include his 2022 win at the International Piano Competition 'Samson François' and his 2023 triumphs at the Jeune Chopin International Piano Competition in Switzerland and the Cleveland International Piano Competition for Young Artists.

In 2024, Ryan clinched the Prix du Piano Bern and the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year title, stunning audiences with his interpretation of Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2.

Reflecting on these achievements, Ryan shared, "This journey has been incredible. I am so excited to continue to share my music and connect with audiences worldwide."

A Global Talent

Ryan's reach extends beyond competitions and solo performances. As a soloist, he has collaborated with ensembles such as the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra, and the VMO itself. His international tours have taken him to Italy, China, Japan, the USA, and beyond, where he has also performed as a chamber musician.

In addition to his performance accolades, Ryan has recently completed an Artist Diploma at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, becoming the youngest recipient of the prestigious Prix Cortot.

He also participated in Fondation Louis Vuitton's New Generation Piano Series from 2022 to 2023, further cementing his place in the classical music world.
