WAKE UP TO A NEW YEAR AND A NEW WAY TO TRAVEL WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE LESS RELIANT ON YOUR CAR IN 2013? ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO TRAVEL COULD BE HEALTHIER, CHEAPER, MORE EFFICIENT AND ECO-FRIENDLY.

A

new year’s resolution to make small changes to the way you travel could lead to a long-term change in lifestyle. Why not give walking, cycling, bus or car sharing a go and reap the immediate rewards! GET FITTER After a festive period of overindulgence, walking gives you a fantastic opportunity to become fitter and healthier. Dust off that pedometer and take pride in the distance you’ve covered! Just thirty minutes a day of brisk walking can have many health benefits, including helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, helping to control your weight, strengthening your bones and reducing high blood pressure, stress and anxiety. Tone your legs and enjoy an aerobic session before you even start your working day by getting on your bike. Research shows that cyclists have fewer days being ill each year, and in congested areas cyclists and pedestrians breathe in fewer fumes than drivers. If the distance you travel is too great and you have to catch the bus, consider getting off a stop early and walking the rest of the way. Time yourself on the walking section on consecutive days: are you speeding up?

Whether you cycle or walk for your whole journey, or simply part of it, you know you will be healthier as a result! SAVE MONEY Enhance the benefit to your purse by walking (it’s free!) or cycling. Once you have bought your bike, cycling is a really low-cost option. If you are fed up with shelling out for fuel and paying for parking, then have you thought about hopping on the bus? Over time, taking the bus works out cheaper than travelling by car. Another way of saving money on your transport costs is to invest in multiple journey and season tickets for the Park and Ride services that many cash-savvy commuters benefit from. By making the investment upfront you are more likely to keep your resolution and you also don’t need to worry about having the right fare on you when you board the bus. Car sharing is also a great way to save money; it can be very sociable and help cut down on fuel and parking costs. You can arrange to car share with your friends or through a more organised workplace scheme. Do you have a spare seat in your car? Could you offer a lift on a regular basis? Find your car sharing match online at travelwest.info – maybe it’s something you could consider trying just a few days a week? Most of us make a concerted effort to be eco-friendly at home, but maybe 2013 is the year to extend this to the way you travel. Remember to be flexible and find a solution that works for you; it could be that on some days you choose to cycle and other days you car share! VISIT TRAVELWEST.INFO FOR TRAVEL OPTIONS IN YOUR AREA, INCLUDING UP-TO-DATE TRAVEL AND REAL-TIME INFORMATION.

WHETHER YOU WANT TO MAKE 2013 THE YEAR YOU PICK UP NEW SKILLS OR DEVELOP YOUR EXISTING TALENTS, YOU’RE SPOILT FOR CHOICE. SIMON FRY LINES UP A SELECTION OF TOP COURSES, CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS.

ICIA A-OK! ✱ Bath’s Institute of Contemporary Interdisciplinary

Arts offers wonderfully diverse creative learning for 2013. Dance classes take in jazz, African & Caribbean, ballet and contemporary with further options including theatre plus visual art courses and workshops bringing photographing people, documentary photography, creative writing and an international collaborative drawing project. Artists get life drawing, drawing and a social art drop-in, with bookmaking and mixed media landscapes keeping the variety coming. The Pee Wee Ellis jazz and funk project in spring 2013 – arguably the

South West’s coolest course – serves up eight sessions and a concert between February and May. These are just some of the ICIA’s creative courses – make yourself a cup of tea and pore over some amazingly engaging offerings. FFI: WWW.BATH.AC.UK/ICIA/CLASSES

ANIMATION DAYS ✱ Spend a day in the company of an experienced

animator/director creating a short animated film. Animation is a great way to express your creativity and tell lively and exciting stories which bring a character to life. After a quick, fun, animation lesson, prepare to be a writer, modelmaker, set designer/builder, animator, camera person and director. With the guidance of an experienced filmmaker, design and make a character, write a story, draw the storyboard and make the film. Animation Days are £50 for the day; you can keep any characters you make and receive a copy of your film. FFI: INFO@TRICKFILM.CO.UK OR WWW.TRICKFILM. CO.UK

AS YOU SPIKE IT ✱ Spike Print Studio is the South West’s largest open-access print studio. Screenprinting classes range from introductory and low-tech to masterclass standard, with other printing learning taking in linocut, wood engraving and block printing as well as the thrillingly simple, wonderfully tactile method that is Japanese woodblock printing. If you’re itching to get etching you’ll find a triumvirate of options – or bring your learning bang up-to-date using digital print creatively on a computer. Children and families can prove they can print in a ‘We Can Print’ programme scheduled for half term, American artist Melissa Gordon will discuss her forthcoming summer show in March, with the same month seeing Gill Nicol staging an informal talk entitled, ‘Where is Print Going?’ followed by a lively Q&A session. MARVELLOUS MARMALADE ✱ The Marmalade House is a small, friendly company with experts trained in art, interior design and furniture painting. It specialises in updating and transforming furniture using French and Gustavian finishes and a subtle palate of beautiful chalk paints and waxes by interiors expert Annie Sloan. Its day course (running from 10am-4pm) brings hands-on tuition to a small group of a maximum of seven students in the safe hands of tutor Vanessa (who trained under Annie). They enjoy a lunch on a day when they’re tutored in how to paint, distress and wax furniture as well as in gilding, decoupage, crackle-glazing and stencilling techniques. The Marmalade House has just opened a brand new studio and shop at 27a&b Belvedere, Lansdown Road in Bath – so why not pop in and see them? FFI: 01225 445855 OR WWW. THEMARMALADEHOUSE.CO.UK

LUCKY THIRTEEN ✱ Patrice Gladwin, teacher of Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation at Transcendental Meditation Bristol told Resolutions, “I always love Friday the 13th, so a whole year of 13s

should be fun! All anyone needs is enough clear thinking to get their work done fast and fussfree, plus excess energy for lots of dancing. So I’m very proud to be pumping out people who discover that daily Transcendental Meditation makes them stress-free and ready for something new … whether it’s a business challenge, something in education or just the feeling that every day is fresh – and dare I say it – exciting? Over and over I heard Maharishi talk about getting 200% of life: 100% inner blissconsciousness along with 100% outer happiness and achievement. Every day for these 40 years teaching TM, I’ve been bowled over by the results people get. They’re both down-to-earth and amazing. Happy New Year!” Patrice is also looking forward to welcoming Richard Tollinton to the centre in the New Year. FFI: 0117 914 7127 OR WWW.TMBRISTOL.ORG.UK

STUDYING SHIATSU Resolutions dropped in on the Bristol School of Shiatsu to find out about their tuition. WHAT IS SHIATSU? Shiatsu is a body-centred therapy which has emerged through the traditions of Japanese massage, traditional Chinese medicine and Zen philosophy. Through understanding and relating to the body as a whole system, including energy (Chi/Ki), emotion, thought and awareness, shiatsu brings touch and presence to the whole person. WHAT IS YOUR APPROACH TO ITS TEACHING? Our approach is to honour our students’ deepest integrity and desire to find their very own and unique experience and expression of shiatsu. Our classes are practical and experiential. We provide an environment that is

friendly, supportive, vital and safe, paying particular attention to both group dynamics and the individual’s needs. WHAT SHIATSU COURSES DO YOU OFFER? We offer a foundation course, a one-year course and a three-year professional practitioner training course. WHAT STUDENT FEEDBACK HAVE YOU HAD? One said: “My life has been completely transformed. Training with the BSS has opened me up to my potential as a human being.” HOW CAN SOMEONE FIND OUT MORE? PLEASE EMAIL US AT INFO@SHIATSUBRISTOL. CO.UK OR VISIT OUR WEBSITE AT WWW. OPEN UNIVERSITY THE OPEN UNIVERSITY OFFERS 120 UNDERGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS INCLUDING (INSET) CHILDHOOD & YOUTH STUDIES.

RESOLUTIONS WAS KEEN TO FIND OUT ABOUT THE LEARNING PROVIDED BY THE OPEN UNIVERSITY. ITS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR IN BRISTOL, MERIEL LEE, WAS READY WITH THE ANSWERS… SO WHAT IS THE OPEN UNIVERSITY? We are the UK’s largest university with over 250,000 students. We offer high-quality flexible learning that can be fitted around your family and work commitments. WHAT COURSES DO YOU OFFER? We offer 120 undergraduate qualifications in a wide range of subjects made up of honours degrees, foundation degrees, diplomas and certificates. Our most popular degrees include BA (Hons) in Childhood and Youth Studies, BA (Hons) in Psychology and BA (Hons) in Business Studies, but we also offer degrees in Arts, Humanities, Languages and the Science and Technology subjects. Most students choose to follow our degree pathway but you can also opt to study a stand-alone module. HOW DOES OU STUDY WORK? SOUNDS LIKE IT COULD BE LONELY… Like all study, Open University study will require selfmotivation but you won’t be on your own. You’ll receive high-quality course materials, advice on how to plan your study and you’ll be allocated a tutor throughout your studies. Tuition might be in faceto-face tutorials, via online tutorials or by phone. Most courses also have very active online communities where you can exchange ideas with your peers. So, although you work in your own environment, you’ll never be on your own. DO I NEED A LEVELS TO APPLY? No, for most undergraduate qualifications you don’t need any formal qualifications. The OU is open to all. WHY SHOULD I DO A DEGREE? Increasingly a degree is a requirement for entry into

many careers. Many of our students return to study with the OU in their twenties and thirties having already had experience of the workplace, but find they need a degree to progress their career. More than half our new students are aged under 30 years and nearly a third are aged under 25.

BUT CAN I AFFORD IT? Part-time students are now eligible for governmentbacked student loans, so if you qualify you won’t need to make any repayments until 2017 and then only if your income is more than £21,000 per annum. WHAT IF I WANT TO KNOW MORE? You can go online www.open.ac.uk, call 0845 300 6090, or if you’d like to talk to an OU tutor about what it’s like to be an OU student, pop along to one of our drop-in sessions at Bristol Central Library which are held on the first Saturday of every month. More details of our events can be found at www. open.ac.uk/events.

“FOR MOST UNDERGRADUATE QUALIFICATIONS YOU DON’T NEED ANY FORMAL QUALIFICATIONS. THE OU IS OPEN TO ALL.” IS A DEGREE FROM THE OU WORTH AS MUCH AS ONE FROM A TRADITIONAL UNIVERSITY? Yes, our students certainly think so. The Open University outperformed all other universities in the National Students Survey 2012 with an overall satisfaction rating of 93%. What’s more, our courses are developed by leading academics, many of whom are world experts in their field. We also offer top-class teaching from a network of 7,000 tutors across the UK, many of whom are practising professionals with strong academic backgrounds, sector-specific skills and practical experience.

MEET THE GRADUATE ✱ Jenny Williams (pictured,) Assistant Project Manager with Bristol-based Thales, graduated in 2012 from the Open University with a BA (Hons) in Business Studies. She believes her Open University degree has helped develop her career in Project Management.

KIM AND CHUMS ✱ Getting fit isn’t easy at the best of times, but

starting your efforts amid January’s cold and darkness makes a hard job even harder. To put some energy into your exertions, join Energised Performance. Head coach Kim Ingleby and team invite you to make 2013 your best year – contact them for a consultation and find out which of their offerings is best for you. EP’s weekly boot camps take place on Clifton’s Downs while other classes include kettle bells, flexi-bars and spinning. Whichever technique you choose, you can look forward to making friends while you lose weight, with the warmest of group meals a feature of the EP way. TRAIL OF CONSTRUCTION ✱ Resolutions had an epic morning a few years

back cycling around Ashton Court’s trails on a mountain bike. The proximity of such exciting cycling within a quick spin of Bristol’s city centre means the trails can take a bit of a beating, especially so after rainfall when riders tend to widen them to avoid puddles. Thankfully, the Bristol Trails Group was established in 2004 to provide the TLC needed to keep the city’s trails ready for enjoyment. It stages occasional trail days – think of them as off-road ‘roadworks’ – when enthusiasts can revamp their routes and also create new features to up the excitement ante. CIRCLE RULES, OK ✱ Resolutions had an enjoyable evening playing

ROYAL FUN ✱ Real tennis – as played at Bristol Real Tennis Club – is the forerunner of lawn tennis and is played in and on an amazing court. Anyone who enjoys racquet sport will pick up the basics instantly, but it’s also popular with cricket players, hockey players and golfers. Indeed, chess players will love the strategy it requires, while its innovative handicap system means players of different abilities can compete on level terms. It was once known as royal tennis and there’s even a court at Hampton Court Palace, that handicap system meaning keen player Henry VIII could enjoy the sport as both the energetic Bluff King Hal he once was and the, ahem, portlier gentleman he became. ROW, ROW, ROW YOUR BOAT ✱ Nobody who saw it will forget the moment

Heather Stanning and Helen Glover won Team GB’s first gold medal of the 2012 Olympics. Inspiration doesn’t get more magnificent, especially considering Helen Stanning did not set foot in a rowing boat until 2008. The Bristol Ariel Rowing Club is located in a wonderfully tranquil setting in St Annes on the river Avon, a short distance from central Bristol. Resolutions dropped in one sunny afternoon and took to his boat like the proverbial mallard. He found the club very inviting and you’ll do so too, with the next learning-to-row course scheduled for spring 2013. Providing you can swim 100m in light clothing you’re good to go – please register your interest with the club. Look out too

INSPIRATION AND PERSPIRATION ✱ Even after you’ve joined a gym you don’t always

look forward to going to it. That’s not the case at Monkton Sports Club, however. Situated just two miles from central Bath, it’s located in Combe Down and enjoys spectacular views of the surrounding Midford Valley which bring a feelgood factor you can take into your exertions. Once on site you’ll find the 25m heated indoor pool very inviting (and open daily for members) and a fitness suite with new conditioning and training equipment recently installed. Full club members enjoy full use of the pool, suite and two squash courts plus free entry to regular adult courses, which are likely to include aerobics, aquarobics, badminton, Pilates and hydrofit. The gym has recently been refurbished and boasts state-of-the-art equipment. As well as training in the gym, members can also use the squash court or take part in a variety of classes. All of the gym’s personal trainers are highly qualified, ensuring members receive the best support and are able to make the most from

CONSERVATION AND CONVERSATION ✱ Getting fit comes via all forms of activity – in

fact, sometimes it doesn’t feel like getting fit at all. Helping out with The Conservation Volunteers’ Green Gym allows you to contribute to conservation while getting a workout, as our Resolutions man found out when he lent a hand back in the day. The chat and cup of tea proved as memorable as the chopping and sawing. In 2013, groups will meet on Tuesdays at Hampton Row, Bath; Wednesdays at Weston Woods, Weston-super-Mare; Thursdays at Three Brooks, Bradley Stoke and Northern Slopes, Wedmore Vale, Knowle; Fridays in Eastville Park, Bristol. DESIRE ZUMBA TEACHER NECTARIA POSPORI KNOWS HOW TO MAKE YOU SLIM, SLINKY AND SMILEY IN 2013. RESOLUTIONS ASKED HER FOR HER SECRET. HOW DID YOU GET INTO ZUMBA? Zumba fitness has worked really well for me, so I want to share my story to inspire others. At a time when things were going really wrong in my life, I let myself dip into bad eating habits, especially cakes! It’s so easy to let go, and it’s not easy at all to motivate yourself to work out. Becoming a single mother also meant I rarely had fun. What I discovered through Zumba fitness was exercise in disguise! It felt like partying to my favourite music, and getting back to my slim body was not the centre of my Zumba experience. Now I’m proud to offer a routine myself, ensuring my students burn over 700 calories in an hour, so they’re closer to their best tummy ever, without doing one sit-up. WHY DOES YOUR ZUMBA ROUTINE GIVE BETTER RESULTS THAN RUNNING OR JOGGING? Because it keeps us in the fat-burning heart rate zone longer! Our body only starts burning fat 20 minutes after we start working out at that intensity. When I decided to lose weight by jogging, all I could manage was 30 minutes each time, and therefore I wasn’t burning fat for long enough. Additionally, I would get pain in my knees and ankles. Instead, my Zumba routine is designed to keep us in a fat-burning metabolic rate, for a whole hour, whilst causing minimum impact on the joints. And we continue burning fat

even after we’ve finished the class, on our way home, until we eat something. Zumba’s fun and addictive, which means you’re much more likely to stick to it and sticking to anything is the key to achieving a goal. IS ZUMBA MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO YOUR STUDENTS? It’s been a year since the first Zumba class I gave and I now run five lively and increasingly popular classes around Bristol. I’ve students of all ages and fitness levels. In my class, no one feels pressure, I just want everyone to get lost in the music. What feeds my passion about Zumba and inspires me to give more is my students’ feedback and results: Jo, whose sisters (all attending my classes) cannot believe she’s into exercising, says: “Your classes have got me addicted.” She’s barely missed one. Lucy says: “When I look around the room everyone has a smile on their face.” Stella has dropped a dress size and many students join the party to get rid of their stress. And student Marine says: “A lot of friends recommended I tried Zumba as an alternative to dancing and going to the gym, so I did. What I loved straight away was the fact you really don’t need to be the most coordinated person. Zumba is liberating, it gives you energy, makes you feel good and reminds you all bodies are made for moving. Having tried a few different instructors I now know the best ones are energetic, patient, motivating and above all smiley! Zumba with Nectaria is not just exercise, she has so much energy and positivity to give that it’s a real smilotherapy experience!” Resolutions? Say: “This year I’ll have fun getting fit!” FFI: 07543 806417 OR WWW. ZUMBAWITHNECTARIA.COM

e’re all about New Year resolutions and a very good idea they are too, but let’s be honest, we’re looking at another bleak January, the post-Christmas hangover has kicked in, piggy banks stand empty and spending every day until spring curled up watching TV re-runs not only seems perfectly acceptable, but the only sensible way to proceed. Understandable therefore that a spot of volunteering is not top of everyone’s new year agenda. The good news is that we’re not asking you to jump off the sofa and go to spread the goodwill – no, there’s time ahead for that; for now, sit back with a cuppa, unwrap a Quality Street, peruse our guide to volunteering – and then see what you think.

FOR DEDICATED FOLLOWERS OF FASHION ✱ The charity shop. Once the exclusive domain of granny jumpers and nylon, charity shops are now a hot spot for high street and vintage fashions. You can do your bit for charity, get first dibs on some boutique bargains and get a foot in the door of the world of fashion and retail (if that’s your thing). Dorothy House Hospice has 22 shops across Bath and the surrounding areas. Pop in and speak to a store manager, call 01225 721485 or go to WWW. DOROTHYHOUSE.CO.UK/VOLUNTEERING ffi.

THE BOOK WORM ✱ You could be equally at home in a treasure trove of literary gems. Most charity shops have book sections, but the likes of Oxfam have gone a step further and opened dedicated bookshops. Call in to your local shop or go to WWW.OXFAM.ORG.UK/ SHOP/LOCAL-SHOPS/OXFAM-BOOKSHOP-QUEENSROAD#VOLUNTEERATTHISSHOP

WORD ON THE STREET ✱ Perhaps a whole new perspective is just what you need this year. Julian House provides services and shelter to homeless people across BANES. No, we’re not suggesting you try sleeping on the streets to gain this perspective, but you could get involved with one of the shelters or projects set up by Julian House. Volunteer roles include catering and domestic duties, admin and client support. Call 01225 35465, email VOLUNTEERING@JULIANHOUSE.ORG.UK or visit WWW. JULIANHOUSE.ORG.UK/SUPPORT/VOLUNTEERING.HTML.

HAVE YOUR CAKE AND SHARE IT...

✱ Over-indulgence is one thing, but does the thought of all the Christmas food waste leave you feeling queasy? FareShare South West is an independent franchise of the national charity FareShare. In a nutshell, they fight hunger and tackle food waste by redistributing fit-for-purpose food to groups working with some of the most vulnerable people in society. Go to WWW.FARESHARESOUTHWEST.ORG.UK/ VOLUNTEER/ or email INFO@FARESHARESOUTHWEST. ORG.UK to find out about the many different volunteering roles.

A BREATH OF FRESH AIR ✱ Avoid the January gym-joining frenzy and go back to basics with a community project, gain new skills as well as getting some good old-fashioned fresh air and exercise. The lovely people at Bath City Farm offer a whole programme of volunteering opportunities to suit all ages and abilities. Call 01225 481269 or go to BATHCITYFARM.ORG.UK/VOLUNTEERINGPROJECTS/ to find out more about general volunteering and specialist programmes. Over in Bristol (Henbury to be precise) is the Avon Riding Centre, dedicated to providing riding tuition and therapy to people with disabilities. Volunteers go by shanks’ pony (on foot), supporting the riders as they learn, making this a rewarding role with health benefits

to boot! Contact volunteer coordinator Sue Thatcher on 0117 959 0266 (Tuesdays and Thursdays) or complete the online application form: WWW. AVONRIDINGCENTRE.ORG.UK/INDEX. PHP?OPTION=COM_CONTENT&VIEW=ARTICLE&ID=12 &ITEMID=39

LEND AN EAR ✱ There’s no point in mincing words, having someone on the end of a phone can literally be a lifeline for people who need help. You could be that lifeline. The Samaritans operate in Bath and Bristol, providing 24/7 confidential phone support to people who are in distress, suicidal or just need to off-load. Full volunteer training is given, but empathy and a good threshold for listening would stand you in good stead. Bristol: Go to BRANCHES.SAMARITANS.ORG/BRISTOL/ to find out about volunteering for the Bristol Samaritans (including details of the informal open evenings). Bath Samaritans: Call 01225 423540 or go to WWW. BATHSAMARITANS.ORG/ to find out more.

GO GREEN FOR ’13 ✱ TCV Avon coordinates environmental projects across Bristol and BANEs. See WWW2.TCV.ORG.UK/DISPLAY/ BTCV_avon for different projects and volunteering opportunities.

✱ Boozers have broadened their appeal since the smoking ban and many now offer homely distractions to while away many an engaging hour. The Dings’ Barley Mow is home to the Bristol Board Games Group (www.eeanonline.co.uk). Meeting fortnightly (the next night is on 15 January at 7.30pm), all are invited to take along their favourite game for fun in like-minded company. The inventive people at Clifton’s Victoria (0117 974 5675) offer monthly ‘crap prize bingo’, Tuesday quiz nights and occasional re-enactments of ‘Play Your Cards Right’. There’s more inventive questioning at Bishopston’s Prince of Wales (0117 924 5552) and regular head-scratching spotted on Mondays at the White Bear (www.whitebearbristol.co.uk), where their Shabby Quiz is actually anything but. Support your local pub!

✱ Ruth from Quincy Lampshades offers one-to-one tutorials in how to make a beautifully finished drum lampshade at her Long Ashton home. A three-hour tutorial in Ruth’s bright and pleasant kitchen costs £45. All materials, tea, cake, lots of help and lampshademaking tips are provided. Bring half a metre of your favourite fabric and you’ll go home with a beautiful lampshade made by your own fair hand – and an inclination to make more. If you can organise a suitable space, Ruth can also stage a lampshademaking party – which sounds fun. If you fancy a spin down to Exeter on 26 January, you can even take part in a mass charity lampshade make and buy/sell/ auction your finished creation for a very worthy cause.

VARIETY IS… ✱‘Have fun, make friends. try new things’ is the message from adventure, sports and social group Spice Bristol & Cardiff. Theatre trips, meals out in restaurants, walking in the countryside, tubing, abseiling, dragon boat racing, poker, quiz and casino nights, black tie balls, rambling weekends, weekends at Center Parcs and skid pan driving are a mere appetiser of the tempting delights Spice has to offer. Preview nights provide a full understanding of what’s on offer. The Bristol north group have theirs on 21 January and 18 February from 7.45-9.30pm at Bradley Stoke’s Hilton Bristol Hotel, while their south Bristol counterparts convene at the same times at the Tobacco Factory on 7 January and 4 February. There will also be a Spice club night and preview night at the Llandoger Trow on 31 January from 7.30-10.30pm, while the Bath group’s preview nights are at the Saracens Head from 8-10pm on 10 January and 14 February. THE PEN IS MIGHTIER ✱ Attending Amnesty International’s letter-writing group at La Ruca on the last Saturday of the month (10.30am-12noon) may well be the best thing you do in 2013. Here’s what happened to a former prisoner of conscience from the Dominican Republic. “When the first two hundred letters came, the guards gave me back my clothes. Then the next two hundred letters came, and the prison director came to see me. When the next pile of letters arrived, the director got in touch with his superior. The letters kept coming: three thousand of them. The President was informed. The letters still kept arriving and the President called the prison and told them to let me go.” FFI: LA RUCA, 89 GLOUCESTER RD, BRISTOL, 0117 944 6810 OR WWW.LARUCA.CO.UK

POTTERING ABOUT ✱ Many people’s hobbies are a source of relaxation, and there’s little more relaxing than spending time at the potter’s wheel. Ace potter Jen Hamilton of Clifton’s Village Pottery offers seven sessions for the price of six (£180, clay material is extra: a mug would cost around £2.50), which can be taken and structured as you wish. They’re perfect for filling time leisurely but productively, and give you plenty to discuss at the dinner table – where your newly-made plates, dishes, bowls and mugs take pride of place. MAKE A NEW FRIEND

FFI: WWW.COMMUNITY-ORCHARD.ORG.UK

✱ Volunteers of all ages – including many young professionals and families – are among the ten Greater Bristol groups actively supporting Contact the Elderly, the only national charity solely dedicated to tackling loneliness and social isolation among older people. It aims to do this by organising monthly Sunday afternoon tea parties for small groups of older people (aged 75+) who live alone and volunteers within their local community, offering a regular and vital friendship link every month. Each older person is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home for the afternoon.

MAKE, DO AND MEND ✱ It’s never been more timely to save money if you can. The Adult Learning Service offers many courses giving you the basics for a rewarding hobby which also helps keep you in the black. Learn how to make your own dresses (you’re guaranteed to be the only one arriving in your outfit) or get nimble with a needle studying sewing for family and home. The service’s three courses on understanding domestic electricity, domestic plumbing repairs and tiling & grouting should pay for themselves in no time. You can even make your own entertainment via a guitar for beginners class. Other learning for pleasure options include classical music appreciation, family history and watercolour with spontaneity. Like many, you may have worked hard to be the weight you are or have goals to get there. You may be lucky and naturally keep your weight about right. Most probably however you have unwanted bumps and lumps of fat pockets resistant to weight loss or toning up. Liposuction is not for everybody and although often remains the best way to reshape is no longer the only realistic option. The first and only treatment ever to be FDA approved for fat loss has recently been developed. An amazing machine that can keep the skin warm while freezing and therefore destroying the deeper fat cells. The change in contour is permanent just like liposuction but without the need for surgical intervention. This really is an effective and plausable one hour or lunchtime procedure (unlike all the others that have claimed this before.). This is not another one of those skin tightening treatments for the body that has minimal effect! no cutting no needles no downtime safe comfortable convienient natural effective clinically proven

the fat freezing revolution.

It is not liposuction but really does have similar effects.

✱ Mr Simon Lee MBBS MSc FRCS is a consultant plastic surgeon operating at Bristol’s Frenchay and Spire Hospitals. His own Aesthetic Medical Clinic, meanwhile, is located in Clifton and offers a wide range of non-surgical treatments including CoolSculpting™ , a revolutionary new technology that targets and freezes stubborn fat cells so your body can eliminate them naturally over a few months. CoolSculpting™ is the first and only treatment ever to be FDA approved for fat loss and results in a permanent contour change without the need for surgical intervention. The procedure – developed by a team of scientists and physicians – uses a precisely controlled cooling method called Cryolipolysis to target, cool and eliminate fat cells without damage to neighbouring tissue. After a one-to-three-hour CoolSculpting™ procedure, your body goes to work; over the next two-four months, the crystallised fat cells break down, allowing them to be naturally flushed from the body. On average, each CoolSculpting™ procedure results in a 20% reduction of fat in the treated area; it’s a convenient, comfortable, effective procedure without cutting, needles or downtime, carried out in a comfortable, relaxing environment. Prices for CoolSculpting™ start at £800 for a small area. Contact the Aesthetic Medical Clinic today to book a free consultation, and prepare to reclaim the body you deserve.
