WELCOME TO THE INAUGURAL SING OUT LOUD FESTIVAL! -------------------------------------------------------------At its core, the Sing Out Loud Festival is for us as a community and for all the talented musicians here in St. Augustine and St. Johns County. It is a celebration of the tremendous diversity and talent we nurture and grow in this wonderful area. For a true music and arts community to flourish, it must be supported and maintained by the people of the community in every way possible. While St. Augustine continues to grow in reputation as one of the absolute “must-stop destinations for national and international touring artists of all varieties, it is the support of the local arts and artists that is key to true success for us. I hope that all of you attending this festival not only get to see and support some of the great artists that you already know and love, but you also discover something new, unique, weird or wild. For it is together that all of us as musicians, music fans and lovers of art and culture, will help continue to establish the greater St. Augustine destination as THE MOST celebrated and preeminent music destination in the Southeast United States. - Ryan Murphy

INDIGO GIRLS Sing Out Loud Main Showcase · Friday, Sept 9 · St. Augustine Amphitheatre Amy Ray and Emily Saliers are Indigo Girls. Rolling Stone Magazine describes them as the “ideal duet partners. When they sing together, they radiate a sense of shared purpose that adds muscle to their lanky, deeply felt folktinged pop songs”. They have spent 35 years performing together, produced 15 albums and earned a GRAMMY and seven GRAMMY nominations. It

is rare to find musicians together so long, rarer still with such profound successes. Their music lives in the hearts of generations of dedicated fans. The iconic duo continues to challenge itself creatively, adding to a body of work that contains such contemporary classics as “Galileo,” “Shame on You,” “Closer To Fine,” “Love of Our Lives,” “Least Complicated” and “Go.”

THE LONE BELLOW Sing Out Loud Main Showcase · Friday, Sept 9 · St. Augustine Amphitheatre Southern-born, Brooklyn-based indiefolk trio The Lone Bellow features the dynamic Zach Williams, Brian Elmquist and Kanene Pipkin who testify mightily to life’s great struggles and joys. Mixing folk sincerity, gospel fervor and even some heavy metal thunder, the heart of the band is harmony: three voices united in a lone bellow. “The feeling I get singing with Zach and Brian is completely natural and wholly electrifying,” says Kanene. “Our voices feel like they were made to sing together.” Long before they combined

their voices, the three members of The Lone Bellow were singing on their own. In 2010, Williams began jamming with Elmquist and when Pipkin joined in, the trio knew it had a band. The group’s critically acclaimed eponymous debut rose to number 64 on the Billboard Top 200 in early in 2013. After a year of hard touring, the band announced they’d be working with fellow Brooklynite Aaron Dessner (the National) on their followup album, Then Came the Morning, which arrived in January 2015.

7

BOOKER T. JONES Sing Out Loud Main Showcase · Friday, Sept 9 · St. Augustine Amphitheatre It can be argued that it was Booker T. Jones who set the cast for modern soul music and is largely responsible for its rise and enduring popularity. On classic Stax hits like “Green Onions,” “Hang ‘Em High,” “Time Is Tight,” and “Melting Pot” the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, Musicians Hall of Fame inductee, GRAMMY Lifetime

Achievement Award recipient and winner of four GRAMMY Awards pushed the music’s boundaries, refined it to its essence and then injected it into the nation’s bloodstream. Outside of the band, Jones made the charts as a solo artist and also lent his trademark keyboards to many artists ranging in genre from Ray Charles to Neil Young.

8

THE TRAVELIN’ MCCOURYS Sing Out Loud Main Showcase · Friday, Sept 9 · St. Augustine Amphitheatre The Travelin’ McCourys are the torch bearers of the McCoury family legacy, taking the traditional string band sound to new levels. No other band today has the same credentials for playing traditional and progressive music. As the sons of bluegrass legend Del McCoury, Ronnie McCoury on mandolin and Rob McCoury on banjo continue their father’s work – a lifelong dedication to the power of bluegrass

to bring joy into people’s lives. And with fiddler Jason Carter and bassist Alan Bartram, the ensemble is loved and respected by the bluegrass faithful while bringing something fresh to the stage. They are known not only for their individual prowess on their instruments but also the tight rhythm, the soulful material and the confidence of taking bluegrass from the safety of the shore into uncharted waters.

NARROW MAGAZINE SPOTLIGHT written by

Dave Kosciolek,

Publisher of Narrow Magazine When I launched Narrow Magazine two years ago, one of my goals was to help bring a major music festival to our city by 2016. Thanks to Ryan Murphy and his team, Narrow is thrilled to help make that dream a reality with the SOL Festival. Narrow is proud to have covered every music genre in our first two years, and a true local music festival needs to be equally inclusive. We are excited to have recommended dozens of performers who will be included in the Festival that may not be familiar to the larger local population – yet. We can’t wait to saturate the city with music (via stages and social media) and show the city, county, and world the brilliance and diversity of our music scene!

STETSON KENNEDY SPOTLIGHT written by

Brad Lauretti

of the Stetson Kennedy Songwriter Residenecy Stetson Kennedy was an author and civil rights activist who invited Woody Guthrie to visit Lake Beluthahatchee in Fruit Cove, St. Johns, FL where he wrote over 80 songs. Stetson Kennedy wanted his home, now a St. Johns County Nature Preserve, to be a refuge for wildlife, and artists. Songwriters are a witness to history, they aspire to the best of who we are, our hopes, dreams, and help us make sense of our world. In 2015, the Stetson Kennedy Songwriter Residency was founded to host a new generation of songwriters writing topical songs in turbulent times. Sing Out Loud Festival Stetson Kennedy Showcase, is proud to present a stage of local and nationally acclaimed songwriters all day at the Colonial Quarter and Downtown Plaza.

“THAT’S WHAT SHE SAID” SPOTLIGHT written by

Chelsea Saddler

“That’s What She Said” Festival Founder The “That’s What She Said” Festival is a women’s music festival that was created to showcase the femaleled acts of St. Augustine. This year’s festival will be held at Planet Sarbez on Saturday, October 9. All proceeds are donated to Girls Rock Camp Jacksonville, a non-profit organization that helps cultivate self-empowerment in girls through music experimentation and peer collaboration. Girls aged 7-17 form bands and learn an instrument while creating their own music. It’s inspiring to me to see women mastering instruments and teaching each other. Far too often we women are divided by societal and trivial nonsense. Not only is this festival aimed to empower female musicians, it is designed to bring us together as a tribe without ego or competition to work together, encourage one another, and share ideas.

GAMBLE ROGERS SPOTLIGHT written by

Bob Patterson

Resident Musician, Storyteller and Living Legend As human beings, it appears we all have this need to belong to something. People who live here or visit our town recognize how unique the music scene is here and want to belong to the experience. They feel the surge of emotion and the sting of delight when a note or a lyric touches their heart. Yes, people do come to St. Augustine for the history, but they come for the music too. You can trace the beginnings back more than 50 years when one man, Gamble Rogers, put us on the map of all touring musicians. For more than 20 years, the Gamble Rogers Festival has been promoting local musicians, and the best of the best from around the state, and national headliners as well. We are proud to be a part of the Sing Out Loud Festival. The value of life can be measured by the quality of life that it touches. Music touches us all.
