FOLIO VOICES: GUEST EDITORIAL
THE MAIL CUT THE SNIPING AT MICHAEL HOFFMANN
RE.: An Open Letter to Michael Hoffmann by Jack Knee, Nov. 6 I have been amused and chagrined by the back and forth comments regarding Michael Hoffmann’s concern that the closing of the Publix at Gateway will create another food desert in our city. His concerns are valid, but Publix should not be expected to shoulder the problems in this part of Jacksonville and continue to operate a marginal or unprofitable store as some sort of civic duty. A better approach to the problem would result if the City of Jacksonville and Mayor Lenny Curry would address the problem of food deserts. If left unaddressed, this trend will make our population unhealthy; without proper nourishment, our children cannot thrive. Ultimately, food deserts will result in more costly problems that will require more attention. Some of us sit and watch (and snipe at others), while we could involve ourselves in real solutions to these problems. I live in Arlington, and the church I attend has partners with local civic action groups in our community every month to feed hundreds of people who cannot afford to provide their families with nutritious food. As Eldridge Cleaver once said, ”If you are not part of the solution, you are part of the problem.” Terry Kelley via email
WHERE ARE COMMUNITY & CITY LEADERS?
I was deeply concerned upon hearing that the Publix at Gateway was due to close. But I also knew that the mayor of Jacksonville would come to the aid of the community—as he always has for the Jacksonville Jaguars. I was also looking for the very public display of the local Black clergy. How could they let this injustice to the community pass? Of course, the appropriate City Council representatives have taken to the media to express their shock and dismay about Publix’s decision. Maybe I’m wrong ... because I know I’m sad. Garey K. Jefferson via email
LENNY SPEAKS
[Mr. Jefferson received this reply from the Mayor’s Office, and duly forwarded it to Folio Weekly.] Thank you for contacting me with your concern over the Publix closing at Gateway Town Center. Citizen feedback is integral to my administration. Please know the City of Jacksonville has reached out to both Publix and the property owner to determine what, if anything, we can do to assist in keeping the business open at this location. My administration is committed to making sure all residents have access to fresh, healthy foods. Again, I thank you for contacting me. Lenny Curry
LEAVE DONALD ALONE
RE.: Our Duty to Impeach by Susanne Barker, Oct. 30 Impeachment was designed by our founding fathers as a very serious means of removing a criminal executive, not as means of destroying the balance of power in our government by retarding or reducing the power of the president by one party because they lost an election. It is an indictment of our national lower education system that so many Americans do not understand basic civics. Referencing George Washington about what is happening today and making incorrect assumptions of what he would have thought of our president exemplifies the shallow understanding of that great man. Even a cursory study of our country’s founding father would divine very quickly that he would have been, in a word, mortified at one party attempting to overturn a legally elected President because they didn’t like him. The president has the unrestricted right to say anything he chooses to any leader of any country on the planet. That is not debatable, and it is not a crime. This absolute farcical, ridiculous, sham that one party is perpetrating on our country will end up to be nothing, like all the rest of the shams. The Congress needs to stop fiddling while Rome is burning! We have serious problems to solve, and impeaching a hard working president is not one of them. M.C. Calderwood via email

BRICKBATS + BOUQUETS BRICKBAT TO SLEIMAN ENTERPRISES The real estate development company caused an uproar in Murray Hill after it installed a fence apparently designed to block waste-disposal access to a neighboring business, Perfect Rack Billiards. The move forced the popular neighborhood pool hall and restaurant to close its kitchen after nearly 12 years. Not cool. BOUQUET TO NEFRSA For its annual charity project, the Northeast Florida Roofers and Sheet Metal Association recently collected materials and provided labor to replace the roof of Southside’s Charles E. Bennett VFW Post 1689. The install was completed Nov. 10, just in time for Veterans Day. BRICKBAT TO FLAGLER COLLEGE News4Jax reports that former assistant professor Tina Jaeckle has sued the private college, alleging that she was fired in retaliation after attempting to expose sexual misconduct. According to the lawsuit, in Feb. 2018, the criminology instructor notified administrators that fellow faculty member Joel Bolante “maintained inappropriate sexual relationships with students, which created a power imbalance between professor and student thereby creating a discriminatory and hostile education environment on the basis of sex.” Bolante remains; Jaeckle was fired in June 2018. DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE WHO DESERVES A BOUQUET? OR MAYBE A BRICKBAT? Submit your choice to mail@folioweekly. com; 50-word maximum, concerning a person, place, or topic of local interest.

POLITICAL CALCULATION
RUTHERFORD REFUSES TO STAND UP FOR WARTIME ALLIES TURKISH PRESIDENT RECEP TAYYIP
Erdoğan is scheduled to visit U.S.
President Donald Trump this week. Erdoğan, of course, is the man who convinced Trump to abandon our allies, the Kurds, so that Turkey could invade parts of Northern Syria where the Kurds have taken refuge. The Kurds fought a five-year war against ISIS. They were supported by U.S. forces, but it was the Kurds who took most of the casualties. They lost 11,000 fighters, while the U.S. only lost six. Yet despite the great sacrifice the Kurds made, Trump was more than willing to allow the Turks to invade Syria and annihilate them. Trump’s action was not popular in Congress. In fact, a resolution to condemn the precipitous pullout was introduced in the U.S. House of Representative. It passed by a vote of 354 to 60. However, Republican Rep. John Rutherford (FL-04) was not among the majority. Rutherford’s no vote is quite shocking. He is a former sheriff and presumably knows the importance of protecting confidential informants and public citizens who are willing to testify against criminals. He knows that you have to stand by the people who stood by you. Perhaps omerta prompted him to vote no. It’s no secret that Rutherford is a Trump supporter. Still, many of the president’s supporters are willing to admit that Trump was wrong to acquiesce to Erdoğan and leave the Kurds to their fate. Two-thirds of the Republicans in the House voted in favor of the resolution. Both of Florida’s Republican Senators, Marco Rubio and Rick Scott, have publicly criticized Trump’s betrayal of erstwhile U.S. allies. Why doesn’t Rutherford do the same? Does he believe that Trump voters in his district want a yes-man for a representative? Does he believe that they support everything that Trump does? Rutherford has yet to explain his no vote. Admittedly, it is a hard one to defend. After the Kurds bore the brunt of ISIS savagery and prevailed, they agreed to withdraw their forces nine miles from the Turkish border and to allow the U.S. to supervise the destruction of their own military posts along a 60-mile border zone—all in an effort to help their U.S. allies please America’s NATO ally, Turkey. No good deed goes unpunished. In return for these conciliatory actions, Trump turned his back on the Kurds and gave Erdoğan permission to attack. Now 30,000 Kurds have had to abandon their homes; more than 121 Kurdish fighters have been
killed; and at least 60 civilians have been killed. One of them was a nine-monthold baby. Turkish forces have also been videotaped dragging Kurds from their cars and executing them on the side of the road. One of them was Hevrin Khalaf, secretary-general of the Future Syria Party, which ironically was created on the advice of the American advisers to improve the relationship between the Kurds and the Turks. There is also the fear now that 11,000 Kurdish-held ISIS prisoners will likely escape as the Kurds turn their attention to defending themselves from the Turks. Trump has declared that none of these ISIS escapees will be a danger to the U.S. because they will carry out their attacks in Europe. Besides showing a callous indifference to the lives of our European allies, Trump forgets that ISIS terrorists have beheaded Americans in the Middle East and that Americans were among the dead in the ISIS attacks in Paris and Nice. Finally, Trump’s betrayal of the Kurds has forced them to make a deal with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad and his geopolitical patrons, Russia and Iran. It is not surprising that Rutherford has not publicly given a reason for his no vote. Rutherford never publicly gives any reason for anything that he does. Unlike most members of Congress, Rutherford does not hold town halls where his constituents can ask him questions. He rarely gives interviews or appears on television. His appearances are generally limited to business groups. He also has a war chest of $443,376 that mainly comes from corporate political action committees. Simply put, he has lost his touch with the common man. Maybe that is why former newscaster Donna Deegan is considering a run for Rutherford’s seat. Deegan is a Jacksonville native who suffered three bouts of breast cancer while broadcasting for First Coast News. As a result, she has become a wellknown activist in the fight against breast cancer and the organizer of the charity marathon, 26.2 with Donna. What’s more, she can relate to people. She is exactly the kind of Democratic politician who has been winning traditional Republican districts lately. And I bet that she would never betray a wartime ally.

LOCAL PET EVENTS & ADOPTABLES FELINE FRENZY VOLUNTEER MEETING Jacksonville is in the midst of a kitten crisis. Yes, community cats are breeding out of control. The Jax Humane Society is calling for volunteers to participate in monthly “Feline Frenzy” spay-andneuter events. This volunteer meeting serves as an orientation session for the program. (The next for-real Feline Frenzy takes place Nov. 24.) No experience required, but all volunteers must be at least 18 years old. They will eventually find themselves helping out in the surgery suite and other medical areas, so this is not for the faint of heart. 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 13, Jacksonville Humane Society, 8464 Beach Blvd., Southside, jaxhumane.org, free.

PETS LIKE ME:
CAYMAN THE CRAB
BEHIND EVERY GOOD HUMAN IS AN AWESOME PET
OUTSIDE OF A HOME, THE ODDS OF A dog interacting with a hermit crab are generally low. So when I met one for the very first time at a local elementary school, I didn’t quite know what to make of it. But I was bent on bringing the classroom pet out of his shell. As it happens, hermit crabs are fascinating little critters—much more than just moving rocks.
TEACHER’S PET Davi: Tell me something about hermit crabs that most people don’t know. Cayman: I’m not a hermit at all! I’m social and prefer company, and I’m not really a crab in the strict scientific sense. I’m a crustacean. What food do you crave most often? Vegetable and plant matter are yummy, but I also like food rich in protein, like krill and lean meat. Is it true that hermit crabs carry their houses on their backs? Yes, where we go, our houses go. When our “crabitat” gets too tight, we simply look for a new and bigger home. We won’t occupy a shell that already has someone living in it, though, because that would be wrong. What happens if you lose a limb? I may lose a limb due to stress, poor tank conditions or fighting with another hermit crab. If I lose a leg, I might still survive and grow a new one. If two or more limbs are lost, the chances of survival decrease. Do hermit crabs pinch or bite? We don’t have teeth so we pinch with our big claw for defense. Don’t mess with us, and we won’t mess with you. What happens if a hermit crab comes out of its shell? We generally come out of our shell when our house becomes too small for us and we
need bigger digs. We may also leave if there is an unwelcome parasite in our home. Why does a hermit crab need a shell from another animal? We are more shoppers than builders. Unlike gastropods, we do not make our own shells, so we are constantly on the lookout for uninhabited shells that are more accommodating to our growing size. Do you have any special talents? We can make our muscles shrink to fit into a shell. We are also great climbers and I’m drawn to the smell of the dead because I’m a scavenger. What are your duties as a classroom pet? My duties are to be interesting, which is hard to do when I sleep all day. I also have instructions to emphasize my cuddle factor, which is hard to do with a house on my back. And I never come out of my shell unless I’m told.
Hey there! I’m Hugs, and I’m a certified good boy. I’m looking for a new BFF who can provide all the kisses, while I provide all the hugs. I’m a bit reserved at first, but once I open my heart to you, there’s no going back! I love treats, exploring and playing with toys. Come meet me today at 8464 Beach Blvd.! PIT SISTERS MONTHLY ADOPTION EVENT The Jax Beach rescue organization specializes in harder-to-adopt dogs, because they need love, too. 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 16, EarthWise Pet, 3846 Third St. S., Jax Beach, pitsisters.org, free.

JEWEL
Are hermit crabs safe to handle? We are safe if you don’t antagonize us. I prefer to retreat into my shell when I’m picked up. Do hermit crabs take baths? We take baths all the time, not just to smell good but mostly to stay alive. We must be kept moist. Though not all teachers are lucky enough—or brave enough—to have classroom pets, I certainly admire those who do. Classroom pets are a great way to teach students responsibility, compassion and science. No matter which pet is chosen for a classroom, it will surely enrich the lives of the children who get to enjoy its presence. Hermit crabs are no exception. NEWS OF THE WEIRD CREME DE LA WEIRD Doctors at Westmead Hospital in Sydney, Australia, documented a case in the British Medical Journal’s Case Reports that has at least one nose out of joint. A 48-year-old former prison inmate had been suffering from sinus infections, nasal congestion and headaches for years, United Press International reported. Doctors treating the man performed a CT scan and discovered a rhinolith—a stone made of calcium—in his nasal cavity, which, when removed, was found to have formed around a small balloon with cannabis inside. The patient then recalled that when he was in prison about 18 years earlier, his girlfriend had smuggled in the balloon during a visit, and he had inserted it in his nose to hide it. But he pushed it too far in and assumed he had swallowed it. The unnamed man is surely breathing easier these days. HIS CIVIC DUTY Astronaut and Neshannock Township, Pennsylvania, resident Andrew Morgan, who is currently aboard the International Space Station, cast his absentee ballot this Election Day from his perch 250 miles above the planet, the New Castle News reported. Ed Allison, Lawrence County’s director of voter services, received Morgan’s application for an absentee ballot and went the extra mile for the spaceman, coordinating with IT for a fillable, secure PDF file that Morgan could use to register his selections. “Astronaut Morgan got the ballot, voted it and sent it back,” Allison said. “No problem at all. In the 11 years I have been here, it is certainly unique.” BRIGHT IDEA Brice Kendell Williams, 32, was hoping to avoid getting a DWI early on Nov. 3, CNN reported, so rather than driving his car from one bar to another in Houma, Louisiana, Williams stole a motorized shopping cart from Walmart and toddled more than a half-mile to his destination, according to authorities. He carefully parked the scooter between two cars in the lot and went inside, where officers from the Terrebonne Parish Sheriff ’s Office found him and arrested him for felony unauthorized use of a moveable. Williams’ bond was set at $2,500. RULES WE DIDN’T KNOW WE NEEDED North Carolina’s Madison County Public Library system has had a loosely enforced rule against bringing pets into its branches. But on Oct. 8, Interim Director Peggy Goforth appeared before the county’s board of commissioners to request a new
policy that tightly restricts animals to only service dogs. Goforth felt she had to advocate for stricter rules after a man brought a bag full of snakes into the library, reported the Citizen Times. “He said, ‘My pets are harmless. Here, let me show you,’” Goforth said. “And he poured them out on the front desk. They just wriggled everywhere.” When told pets weren’t allowed in the library, “He was really nice about it. He just bagged up all the snakes and left,” she added. She said another man brought in an ant farm and took the top off to feed them, then forgot to put it back on. “The ants got everywhere.” DANG Talk about bringing down the room. Late on Nov. 2 in Hattingen, Germany, about 300 patrons of a swingers’ club were interrupted mid-party when carbon monoxide alarms sounded and several began to feel unwell. Firefighters escorted the swingers, many clad only in bathrobes, to safety, with about 10 people requiring treatment, reported the Associated Press. However, firefighters could not detect any dangerous level of carbon monoxide once they arrived on the scene. ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT Belinda Gail Fondren, 52, of Evans, Louisiana, was charged with filing or maintaining false public records on Oct. 23 after it was discovered that she was writing fake doctor’s notes for high school students so they could get out of class. Fondren, who worked at a medical clinic, charged $20 for each excuse, Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft told WTAP. He also said it was common knowledge among students that the excuses were for sale. Two students obtained excuses on 14 occasions, he said. Fondren’s fraud came to light when someone from the Vernon Parish School Board called a doctor about the notes, which he denied having authorized. Her bond was set at $15,000. WEIRD WEATHER Residents of Kansas City were puzzled by a foul smell in the air, similar to funky feet or manure, on the evening of Nov. 6, according to KSHB. Meteorologists at the National Weather Service came to the rescue with an explanation: A cold front that moved into the area from the north included a shallow mixing layer that had trapped the odors in Minnesota and Iowa. As they put it: “Strong winds ... transported in an ‘agriculture’ smell from farms north of here.” weirdnewstips@amuniversal.com

FREEWILL ASTROLOGY
ARIES (March 21-April 19): The coming weeks will be a favorable time for you to fully bloom and assert your practical magnificence. The lessons you have learned while improvising workable solutions for yourself are ripe to be applied to the riddles that puzzle your tribe or group or gang. To achieve maximum effectiveness, you should be willing to do good deeds for people who may not be able to pay you back. TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You’re entering a phase of your astrological cycle when it’s crucial that your receptivity be as robust as possible. Here are good questions. 1. Do you know what help and support you need most, and are you brave and forthright enough to ask for it? 2. Is there any part of you, perhaps unconscious, that believes you don’t deserve gifts and blessings? 3. Do you diligently cultivate your capacity to be refreshed and restored? 4. Are you eagerly responsive when life surprises you with learning experiences and inspirations? GEMINI (May 21-June 20): “Many people will not be honest because they fear loss of intimacy and togetherness,” writes self-help author Henry Cloud. But the truth, he adds, is that “honesty brings people closer together,” because it “strengthens their identities.” Therein lies the tender paradox: “The more you realize your separate identities, the closer you can become.” Living according to this principle may not be as easy or convenient as being deceptive and covert, but it’s ultimately more gratifying. CANCER (June 21-July 22): “Maturity is having the ability to escape categorization,” said poet Kenneth Rexroth. That’s the opposite of the conventional wisdom. For many people, the process of growing means trying to fit in, to find one’s category, to be serious and steady and stable. Rexroth, on the other hand, suggested that when you fully ripen into your potentials, you transcend standard definitions; you are uniquely yourself, outside and beyond all pigeonholes. The coming weeks will be an excellent time for you to practice and cultivate this sacred art. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Is there an event from your past that would be empowering for you to remember in detail? Is there a neglected but still viable dream you could resurrect, thereby energizing your enthusiasm for the future? Are there old allies you’ve lost touch with but who, if you called on them, could provide you with just the boost you need? The coming weeks will be a favorable time to meditate on these questions. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): St. Francis (1181–1226) loved animals and the natural world. According to legend, he was once traveling on foot with several companions when they came upon a place where the trees were filled with birds. Francis said, “Wait for me while I go preach to my sisters the birds.” Seven centuries later, author Rebecca West offered a critique of the bird-whisperer. “Did St. Francis preach to the birds?” she asked. “Whatever for? If he really liked birds he would have done better to preach to the cats.” In the coming weeks, preach to both the birds and the cats. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Every now and then I authorize you to shed your polite persona and express the angst you sometimes feel but usually 44 | folioweekly.com | november 13-19, 2019
hide. To egg you on, read this mischievous rant by blogger Clary Gay: “We Libras are constantly thinking about how to make everyone else comfortable and happy. There’s not a minute going by when we’re not worrying about radiating a soothing and comforting aura so everyone can have a good time. If a Libra is cranky, it’s because they snapped! Because of some non-Libra who doesn’t appreciate them! If a Libra is mean to people, it’s their own damn fault!”. SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Poet Robert Bly tells us that the door to the soul is unlocked. You don’t have to struggle through any special machinations to open it or go through it. Furthermore, the realm of the soul is always ready for you. Always! It harbors the precise treasure you need in order to be replenished and empowered. I bring this to your attention, because I think that during the next two weeks, you should abide as much as possible in the soul’s realm. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): In my estimation, what you’ve experienced lately has been akin to a fermentation process. It’s as if you’re undergoing a transformation with resemblances to the way that grapes turn into wine, or milk becomes yogurt, or dough rises before being baked into bread. You may have had to endure some discomfort, but you’ll ultimately be quite pleased with the results (which I expect will be ready no later than ten days after your birthday—and quite possibly sooner). CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Many books have been written about Joan of Arc. Among the many miraculous elements of her story was the fact that less than a year before she led troops into battle on horseback, she didn’t know how to ride a horse. She learned by riding around her father’s farm astride his cows. I foresee an equivalent marvel in your future. By this time next year, you will have developed an aptitude that might seem unimaginable now. (P.S. There’s evidence Joan was a Capricorn.) AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): The Divine Comedy is one of history’s greatest literary works. Its author, Dante Alighieri, was 43 when he began writing it. Up until that time, he had published just one book and a few poems, and had also abandoned work on two unfinished books. Yet the not-yetrenowned author presents a fictional scene in which he meets with the spirits of antiquity’s most famous authors: Virgil, Homer, Horace, Ovid, and Lucan. Those illustrious five tell Dante he is such an important writer that he ranks sixth, after them, in his excellence. Dare to indulge in behavior like Dante’s: to visualize and extol—and yes, even brag about—the virtues and skills that will ultimately be your signature contribution to this world. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): The Latin word for sea is mare. Flustra is the calm sea. Undisonus means “resounding with waves.” Caeruleus is the sea’s deep shade of blue, aestus is the tide, and aequoreus means “connected with the sea.” My hope is that as you meditate on these lyrical terms, you’ll remember the first lakes, rivers and oceans in which you swam. Why? It’s a favorable time to seek the healing and rejuvenating powers of primal waters—both metaphorically and literally. Rob Brezsny freewillastrology@freewillastrology.com
LAST CONQUISTADORS by JIM MINION
EPISODE 7.0: AQUARIUMS Gabriel Menendez managed to swim out from the stone lion guarding the old bridge and landed on a barrier island where the Helios had washed up, years ago. Its broken body lay on its side, the ship’s bridge window was at the three o’clock position. The Whole Earth Helios protruded from the surf in the shape of a fivestory-high bullet that was fired then inexplicably dropped to the sand, which wasn’t far from what really had happened. It astonished him that small waves like these could rock the massive ship up and down, slowly but continuously. He could only sit and gaze at the great scolding finger that wagged its accusation, “You’re too late.” Gabriel wasn’t the kind of person who did well when alone. Despite the fact that humanity had been reduced to fewer than seven million people, he had never really been alone. As he sat on the sand beside a brine-blasted ship meant for hundreds, on an abandoned planet meant for billions, he appreciated just how alone he really was. But he knew not to panic. He had learned not to panic in the aquariums at home on Loreon station. As a kid, Gabriel would visit his dad, an aquatic botanist, at work in the aquariums. His favorite thing to do was to open the lid of a tank and coax a fish to come out. In low gravity, the fish could exit the tank encased in a blob of water and float about the compartment in its own liquid enviro suit. If the fish kept its cool, it could explore all the places otherwise forbidden to fish. If the fish panicked and thrashed, the water would be scattered, the fish would be exposed to the air, and begin to suffocate. Either way, Gabriel would return the finned adventurer to the tank. It would always dart away as if rejoicing in the thrill of its freedom while concurrently embracing the safety of its captivity. “What kind of fish am I?”
Gabriel said out loud, knowing no one heard. He pulled his helmet release and it hissed open. It was fortunate he was sitting down when the unfiltered world hit him. He experienced the same sensory overload and vertigo Mikhail that had 50 kilometers away. He had smelled dead fish and rotting seaweed before, but this was beyond his reckoning. Crashing waves sounded like cataclysm. Screeching gulls were dragons on the attack. The steel grind of the Helios’s hulk, slow rocking in the waves, was the breaking of the world. He lurched forward to his hands and knees prepared to vomit. He only wretched. When the assault of the new world subsided to a manageable state, Menendez lay on his back. The bulk of his suit kept his head off the sand. He could lean his head back, close his eyes, and just breathe. He began to wonder where the others were, who had survived, and if there was anything left of the lander. If Liu saw the Helios and was still alive, she should be somewhat close. Unless he was the only one alive. A voice familiar yet changed interrupted his desperate solitude. “Tho, what da hell kinda fith are you anyway?” He snapped upright in a sitting position, warm fear rising in him. Before him he beheld a face that was two faces. The right side was the face of Leani Liu. The left side was a purple puff of flesh with a slit for an eye that shared a nose and mouth with Leani. “Fish?” Gabriel said through a snort. Having felt just about everything possible in the past few minutes, he burst into laughter; Leani was already laughing. They had hardly begun to breathe this foul, rich air and now they were laughing in it. The two newborn Earthlings sat on the beach in the shadow of doom as their laughter made them high. november 13-19, 2019 | folioweekly.com | 45

NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC GETS HIP
THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN MAINSTREAM media and cannabis culture is about as long and dysfunctional as that the between the lead singer and guitarist of your favorite 1960s British rock band, whoever they are. (Mine is Led Zeppelin, and that’s not quite so bad, but still weird.) For decades, these publications, which lived and in many cases died on their proximity to power, studiously embraced their status as establishment gatekeepers, reliably repeating whatever foolishness they were fed on the subject with not even the illusion of independent thought. Their craven efforts to deceive readers were crucial to maintaining the status quo for policy, with all the awful human costs that entailed. Well, times have changed, and our beloved MSM has been forced to develop a bit of humility. Corporate print media is facing hard times, unprecedented in scope, and that has been almost invariably due to shoddy management by the witless holding companies that bought these once-proud institutions and then, almost without exception, ran them into the ground faster and harder than I would be if I tried to tackle Leonard Fournette. With that, revelations have occurred. Maybe the government isn’t always right, and maybe their insider sources are not always motivated by altruism. Perish the thought! A nice, entertaining, educational example of how this dynamic has played out can be found on your local newsstand (if such things still exist) right now. It’s a special cannabis-themed copy of National Geographic, titled “Marijuana Medicine:
46 | folioweekly.com | november 13-19, 2019
The Science of Unlocking the Secrets of Cannabis.” Now, many magazines have rolled out cannabis specials over the past couple of years, but this is the only one I’ve seen that is actually worth its inflated cover price. Over the course of 112 pages, various writers touch on everything from growing to cultivating to harvesting, as well as the legal and ethical issues—not to mention a mention of the culture itself. I saw this glossy gem in the checkout line at Publix, nestled in amongst the tabloids and the Sudoku books, its bright yellow cover showcasing a giant pot leaf that all but screamed, “Buy me, rube!” And I was going to, until I found out that a friend already did. I spent the $14.99(!) on beer instead. It’s worth noting that NatGeo, founded 1888, is one of the world’s oldest print publications, and perhaps the only one that has managed to maintain its momentum throughout every phaseshift the business has seen in that time. It’s architects have done everything right, cultivating a niche market that nonetheless spanned virtually every demographic at the same time, with uniformly spectacular production values and a team of photographers that’s made the magazine one of the few real icons left in the industry. It’s rare to see the mainstream press giving cannabis a fair shake, even these days, but the NatGeo folks have done just that. Recommended! FOLIO VOICES: BACKPAGE
JEA HAS GONE ROGUE
SOME THOUGHTS ON “PRIVATIZING” THE UTILITY MANY YEARS AGO (ABOUT 52), THE
voters of Duval County mandated a “Bold New City of the South.” Today there is a behind-the-scenes, behindclosed-doors planning group that would hoodwink us into changing that to the “Sold New City of the South.” Voters overwhelmingly shouted a message against selling their JEA. Yet the JEA CEO and board continue to engineer a stampeding train forward, designed to keep the Jacksonville City Council on a “need to know’ basis—and keep citizen stakeholders and business leaders in the dark altogether. Any suggestion of transparency is a joke and an intentional lie. There has been no open, fact-based, honest dialogue. This rogue JEA was not contemplated by the framers of the voter-approved City Charter. It gets worse. Privatizing JEA would guarantee moving decisions about Jacksonville’s future to South Florida, North Carolina or even a foreign country. And the focus will be on Wall Street, not our Main Street. What kind of future would that mean for our children and grandchildren? Local control would be gone. Should we give up ownership and control of our most vital, important asset? Not just no, but Hell no! In my past service as a City Councilmember-at-large, I had to learn to read CoJ and JEA financial reports. I’ve studied the current reports, and this is JEA today: 1. It is very profitable, paying a record-high $125 million contribution to the City of Jacksonville. That’s 50 percent more than a decade ago, and a full 100 percent more than two decades ago. 2. It has massive cash liquidity and reserve funds available for productive investments. 3. It boasts some of the lowest electric rates in Florida. Current JEA rates are a bit lower than 10 years ago, and they remain stable while private utilities like FPL raise rates annually.
We should keep this wonderful local asset as we enter what looks to be an emerging golden age of energy. Lower costs, more revenue and profits, and stable, low rates will work to our local benefit. Should we find new ways to bring in and use greater private-sector efficiency? Of course! The sooner, the better. But give up local control and ownership? Hell no. Instead of selling JEA, I suggest using proven ways to coordinate city stakeholders. The mayor, City Council and JEA should work together on big, bold projects. After all, without tax or rate increases, an estimated $2 billion is available for investment in things like infrastructure, bringing sewer and drainage lines to the many areas still on polluting septic tanks, undergrounding overhead electric lines, and adding more stormwater drainage facilities where they are still needed. Speaking of undergrounding overhead electric lines—a recommendation made as far back as 1929—it could be accomplished within five years. We owe it to our citizens to put power lines underground to protect them when the next hurricane strikes. Look at California, where aboveground power lines have exacerbated the raging wildfires. And we owe it to our citizens to deliver what was promised to the voters with Consolidation. Why not start in the most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods? I have confidence that Council President Scott Wilson and our City Council can and will do this. To quote President John F. Kennedy quoting George Bernard Shaw, “Some see things as they are and ask why? I dream things that never were, and say why not?” Eric Smith mail@folioweekly.com _______________________________

ADVERTORIAL
CHEF JAMES MOLINARO MAKES JACKSONVILLE GOLD CLUB SIZZLE New York Times columnist Frank Bruni once wrote a glowing profile of Robert’s Steakhouse, in New York City, under the title “Where Only the Salad Is Properly Dressed.” You see, Robert’s is nestled inside a Hell’s Kitchen gentleman’s club. As Bruni observed, “It may be laughable when someone says he gets Penthouse magazine for the articles. It’s no joke when I say I went to the Penthouse Executive Club for the steaks.” And they were good. Bruni knows that great food can be found anywhere and everywhere, if you know where to look. Gourmands across Northeast Florida are getting hip to a similar situation right here at home. Ever since coming on board as chef, James Molinaro has transformed Jacksonville Gold Club into a dining destination. Once known solely for its eye candy, the adult entertainment complex is now a hotspot for surf, turf, pasta, soup, salads and the best Philly Cheesesteak south of the Delaware River. A New Jersey native, Molinaro grew up with the authentic taste of neighboring
Philadelphia. His kitchen has dutifully engineered one the few for-real cheesesteaks in Northeast Florida, with careful attention to every detail from the bread to the cheese to the quality and preparation of the beef. (Oh, and he’s from a good Italian family, so he learned from the masters how to cook pasta and prepare marinara.) All this attention to detail has not gone unnoticed. Working folk flock to Molinaro for lunch and dinner, enjoying their meals while watching an array of big-screen televisions in Gold Club’s comfortable, woodpaneled sports bar. It’s your man-cave away from home. The space also boasts weekly and game-day buffets. Gold Club’s adult entertainment is offered in an adjacent hall. Jacksonville Gold Club is located next to Jacksonville Executive at Craig Airport. It is open 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. Monday to Saturday and 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday.
