U.S. FABLES MARCUS KENNEY

Multimedia artist Marcus Kenney has utilized photography, sculpture and painting to create a kind of collagist universe of visual mashups as inscrutable as it is invitational. Totem-like assemblages, text-based 2D work, fur, feathers and sequins all coexist in the Atlanta-based artist’s truly singular galaxy, a Southern-hued place where the commentary on the political and spiritual seem to float together. Kenney has exhibited internationally and been featured in media outlets, including Art in America, New American Paintings and The New York Times. Opening reception for Dope is held 7-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at Florida Mining Gallery, Southside, floridamininggallery.com. Jan. 18-24, 2017 • FOLIOWEEKLY.com • 15

WROTE A SONG FOR EVERYONE

ERIC TAYLOR Longtime Texasbased singer-songwriter Eric Taylor is the ultimate “songwriter’s songwriter,” a blessing and a curse that brings as much certain praise is it does the seemingly attendant inevitable obscurity. And that’s all right, since Taylor’s inventive mix of storytelling and savvy tunes might be a little too “real” for pop audiences. A much-in-demand performer throughout Europe, the Emmy-nominated Taylor has released nine critically lauded albums and had his tunes covered by the likes of Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith. 7:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20, Mudville Music Room, St. Nicholas, $15, raylewispresents.com. PSYCHOBILLY CIRCUS KOFFIN KATS For more than 40 years, the unlikely blend of heavy punk and butt-kickin’ rockabilly — dubbed “psychobilly” sometime when the genetics of the music frontier seemed like one big petri dish just waiting for a rock journalist to wordsmith a new genre — has enjoyed a strong and loyal following. Veteran survivors Koffin Kats (pictured) haul their ripping roots playlist to Northeast Florida for an evening of boot-scootin’ moshing, ably abetted by performance from The Attack, Mudtown, and FFN. 8 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21, Nighthawks, Jacksonville, $10, facebook.com/nighthawksjax.
