YOU CAN (STILL) SEE
MARSHALL TUCKER BAND Touring for over 40 years, this band is easily one of the hardest working in show business. In the ’70s theirs was one of the hottest tickets to have, and though they might be taking a ride on the nostalgia-rock-tour bus, their music has touched generations … even if your first exposure to it was on one of those cringe-inducing reality TV, sing-for-your-life, manufacture-a-star shows. The band performs 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 14, at The Florida Theatre, 128 E. Forsyth St., Downtown, $25-$49, 355-5661, floridatheatre.com. September 13-19, 2017 • FOLIOWEEKLY.com • 13

Steve Earle & The Dukes Sunday, September 10 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre The life of Steve Earle is as storied as the many songs that he has penned. Even from his early teen years in Texas, Earle had a restless streak met only by a penchant for songwriting. In the mid80s, Earle had a taste of success that was quickly surpassed by his appetites for hard living. After stepping back out of the shadows in the ‘90s, Earle has been a creative force to be reckoned with, in the process helping create a music style known simply as, “Americana.” From the tragic sweethearts of “Poison Lovers”
and the desperate life of “What’s a Simple Man to Do?” to the blunt protest of “Conspiracy Theory,” Steve Earle is fearless as a songwriter who looks deeply into places where others look away. Earle has released 15 full-length releases and won three GRAMMY awards. Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, Waylon Jennings, and Shawn Colvin, among others, have all Earle’s songs. He’s also an accomplished novelist, playwright, short story writer and an outspoken political and social activist.

Lake Street Dive Saturday, September 9 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Lake Street Drive never let their impressive musical chops get in the way of their even more remarkable skills at performing an array of inventive music that touches on soul, jazz, and pop. The group formed in 2004 at the New England Conservatory of Music; a fitting launchpad since all four members of the band are multi-instrumentalists. The band — Rachel Price (lead vocals), Mike “McDuck” Olson (trumpet, guitar), Bridget Kearney (upright bass), and Mike Calabrese (drums) – were relentless in honing their sound, playing more than
300 gigs in one year alone. Lake Street Dive have released seven well-received albums, while appearances on The Late Show with David Letterman, Conan, and The Ellen DeGeneres Show have helped push the band into an even wider spotlight. Their love of older music aside, Lake Street Drive is surely a 21stcentury band. Much of their success is surely drawn from engaging with fans through social media and YouTube, the latter featuring an impressive rendition of The Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.”
7
Wolf Parade Sunday, September 24 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Wolf Parade might be one of the more unique groups appearing at this year’s Sing Out Loud Festival. The Canadian band formed in 2003 and signing to Sub Pop Records two years later, the group released their full-length debut, Apologies to the Queen Mary. Songs like the post-punk rocker “We Built Another World” and the ethereal ballad “Same Ghost Every Night” both puzzled and thrilled many on the music scene; even in a decade of shifting trends and idiosyncratic bands, Wolf Parade were surely ahead of
the pack. Accolades from Pitchfork, The Los Angeles Times, and Rolling Stone soon followed. After releasing two more albums of their patented blend of synths and straight-up rock, Wolf Parade threw another curveball onto their career path by calling it quits. In 2016 the band—Spencer Krug, Dan Boeckner, Arlen Thompson, and Dante DeCaro—came out of indie rock retirement. Their forthcoming release, Cry Cry Cry, is slated for release on Oct. 6 of this year. They are also joining Arcade Fire on tour throughout 2017.

Dirty Dozen Brass Band Friday, September 15 at Historic Lincolnville Stage A group that has become synonymous with their hometown of New Orleans, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band are true living legends of that city’s heritage. For more than 40 years, the group have been bringing their own flavor to the table. Known for blending the sounds of traditional New Orleans music, funk, bebop, and one-of-kind cover versions, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band are true ambassadors of music of both the past and present. The current seven-piece lineup, including founding members
Gregory Davis, Kirk Joseph, and Roger Lewis, are favorites on the festival scene, performing both nationally and in Europe. Along with music fans, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has also attracted some equally heavyweight players from several different music scenes. Artists like Dizzy Gillespie, Dr. John, Elvis Costello, Norah Jones, and Modest Mouse are just a few of the band’s peers who’ve collaborated with these elders of the Crescent City’s legacy and sound.
9
Los Lobos Sunday, September 10 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Los Lobos have always played to the beat of their own drum. Formed in East Los Angeles in 1973, Los Lobos arguably created their own genre. Before terms like “eclectic” or “Americana” were labels, the band were playing a singular blend of rock and blues, country, zydeco, soul, all the while blending in traditional Latin styles like cumbia and norteño. Embraced by both critics and music lovers, the band were a welcome anomaly to the ‘80s pop
music scene. After their cover version of Richie Valens “La Bamba” topped the charts in 1987, the band ascended from underground faves to bona fide stars. In the years since, the GRAMMY award winners have has released more than 20 releases and appeared on just as many soundtracks and compilations. This year’s festival offers a chance to witness what is undoubtedly a group that are of the longest running and impressive American live acts.
11
Lucero Saturday, September 9 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Calling Lucero restless might be an understatement. Formed in Memphis in 1998, the band wasted no time in establishing themselves as an impressive alt-country group to be reckoned with. Featuring their signature style that touches on soul, country, rock, and punk, over the past two decades Lucero have stood their ground as trends come and go. Songs like “Drink Till We’re Gone” and “Baby Don’t You Want Me” give a glimpse into Lucero’s sound, blue-collar stories
of love and loss, all served up with the band’s dark take on Americana and vocalist Ben Nichol’s gritty vocal delivery. In recent years, the band has added a horn section, pedal steel, and even a gospel chorus to their mix. While the band’s beards have turned gray and their tattoos are a little faded, Lucero continues to garner new fans through the band’s skills at taking older American music and leading it into new and uncharted places.
12
Deer Tick Sunday, September 24 at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre Providence, Rhode Island group Deer Tick originally started out as a heavier, punk-style band. But after lead vocalistguitarist John McCauley heard the music of Hank Williams, the band took a turn towards more country, blues, and folk-tinged fare. Albums like The Black Dirt Sessions, Divine Providence, and Negativity are three reliable road maps to Deer Tick’s sound. The band’s songs are like a flickering bar light capturing the images of downon-their luck ramblers, brokenhearted folks looking for hope, and darker
lives staying in the shadows. The band – McCauley, Christopher Dale Ryan, Dennis Michael Ryan, and Ian Patrick O’Neil – seem to be continuing on their creative upswing. Their latest two releases, Deer Tick Vol. 1 & Vol. 2, have a mid-September launch date. Their new single “Sea of Clouds,” is an indicator of more good things to come, sounding like a kind of gritty upgrade of Blood on the Tracks-era Bob Dylan with a definite punk vibe and wallop.

Doug Carn Friday, September 15 at Historic Lincolnville Stage If there’s one artist that could exemplify the funky and singular vibe of St. Augustine, it’s Doug Carn. A journeyman jazz musician, pianist, and organist with truly virtuoso skills, Carn has spent his life following his music muse locally, throughout the states, and Europe. A native of St. Augustine, Carn studied oboe and composition at Jacksonville University and Georgia State College. In the ‘70s, Carn released a string of albums on the Black Jazz Records label - including Infant Eyes, Adam’s Apple, and Revelation, which have become
classics of the soul-jazz era. As a side player, Carn has played with some of the greatest names in 20th-century jazz and soul, including Nat Adderley, Dr. Lonnie Liston Smith, Shirley Horn, Loud Donaldson, Stanley Turrentine, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Over the years, Carn has became a de facto mentor to countless local players and in 1979 co-founded the Lincolnville Restoration and Development Commission, an organization that has been key in maintaining the neighborhood’s heritage and history.

100 THOUSAND POETS FOR CHANGE SPOTLIGHT written by CHRIS BODOR of ancient city poets
“The beauty of the concept of 100 Thousand Poets for Change is that it is completely decentralized and completely inclusive.” - Bob Holman & Margery Snyder, About.com. You can be an agent of change with your written words. This is the idea behind 100 Thousand Poets for Change, a grassroots organization now in its seventh year that brings communities together to call for environmental, social, and political change within the framework of peace and sustainability. On September 30, 2017, concerts, readings, workshops, flash mobs, parades and demonstrations will take place in more than 109 countries around the world. Join us for St. Augustine’s official observation of the global event that will feature more than 500 events this September. “Peace and sustainability are major concerns worldwide, and the guiding principles for this global event,” said Michael Rothenberg, co-founder of 100 Thousand Poets for Change. “We are in a world where it isn’t just one issue that needs to be addressed. A common ground is built through this global compilation of local stories, which is how we create a true narrative for discourse to inform the future.”
Hosted by the Ancient City Poets, this showcase is an opportunity to hear ideas for change, learn about examples of change from Michael Rothenberg, and share your poems for change. For more info on Ancient City Poets, find them on Facebook. For 100 Thousand Poets for Change info, go to www.100tpc.org

LINCOLNVILLE SPOTLIGHT written by NANCY SHAVER mayor of st. augustine and lincolnville resident
LINCOLNVIL E SPOTLIGHT
I was in a pub in Ireland once and was asked to sing. I said, “My daughter doesn’t let me sing, even in the shower.” You really don’t want me singing – but this September we can all enjoy the gift of listening to people who can really sing – and it’s free. St. Augustine is a town made for music. We have amazing musicians and wonderful places to listen to music. But we have more than that; there is simply something magical about walking down our historic streets and hearing tunes in the air. For these three weekends, there are more choices and more styles of excellent music than it’s likely possible to take in, but I’m going to try. Right down the street from my house in Lincolnville, there will be stage in the heart of this historic place. If you can, take the time to walk the ACCORD Freedom Trail, which tells heroic stories of the Civil Rights movement. Not only is Lincolnville home to our rich Civil Rights history, but it was historically home to many jazz musicians. My secret dream is to have a jazz club on the second floor of the Lincolnville Museum and Cultural Center – a place that’s worth a visit. I have to admit that hearing Doug Carn (a hometown favorite) is going to be a highlight for me. I’m more than thrilled that Justin Townes Earle will be back in town. A chance to hear Chelsea Sadler and Sam Pacetti and so many more will make my neighborhood a lively place in September.

And maybe I’ll even take a chance and sing—but not very loud.

HEART BREAKERS
WARPAINT When it started trickling out that Warpaint was coming to Jacksonville, more than a few folks got excited, and with good reason. The band, once called a “rock revelation” are an anomaly: instead of a sound that might be likened to a wildly charging, guitarheavy Blondie, the band is noodle-y, soft and experimental even as they swing into faster gears—they’re interesting, but still very listenable.
