Letter from the FESTIVALE CHAIR
S
t. Augustinians believe that every day is beautiful on the First Coast,
but May is a very special time to enjoy our city, take in the sights and enjoy the events during the ten days of Romanza Festivale of Arts
and Culture. Every day offers a schedule filled with music, visual arts, theater, heritage and cuisine for your entertainment and enlightenment.
We believe our small city is the cultural epicenter of the First Coast. Not only is heritage paramount in this “Ancient City,” but arts and culture have thrived since its founding when Don Pedro Menéndez brought Spanish court musicians with him to settle the new colony in 1565. This is our seventh St. Augustine Festivale, and while we add new events every year, many favorites have returned: the Young Performers Series, the Chamber Music Series and A Little Night Music and our favorite headliner, Kaleidoscope of Dance. We have added a new feature—a Martial Arts Demonstration on two different evenings—as well as other new performances. Many events are FREE and that includes our headline show, Hot, Hot Harmony, featuring the Satin Dolls and Return 2 Zero on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 pm in Lewis Auditorium. For the second year, Romanza is partnering with the Gamble Rogers Music Festival on our first weekend. Their main stage is at the Colonial Quarter on St. George Street and will include shows on Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday afternoon.
You will love being in St. Augustine. Explore our city, dine in our cafes and bistros, visit our shops, galleries, historical sites, museums and discover Festivale, a cavalcade of beautiful music, compelling theater, outstanding art—all presented in the nation’s oldest city.

Romanza Kaleidoscope of Dance Showcases the Area’s Dance Talent
O
ne of the goals of the Romanza Festivale since its start was to provide a venue for St. Augustine’s artists to display their work to residents and visitors alike. No area has been more eager – or more exuberant – in showing their work than the dance community. Kathleen Vande Berg, a musician and the current Romanza chair, came up with the idea of a showcase at which all dance companies could perform. And she had in mind just the right person to organize it – Judy Woodruff, a dance instructor and choreographer at the St. Augustine Council on Aging (COA). That was four years ago. Since then, the annual showcase at the Lewis Auditorium at Flagler College has presented most of the dance groups in the area, each with a slot on the program. The exact lineup varies each year, as do the dancers in each group, but the quality of the performances remains high. “Most groups will perform their best pieces,” Ms. Woodruff explains. “It serves as a come-on to get new fans to attend their own shows.” Ms. Woodruff adds that the spirit of collaboration outweighs any competitiveness, in part because it’s rare for a dozen or so dance companies to be on a single show. “To me the most important part of this is that the groups really want to get together and show themselves with the other groups,” she says. “Dance is difficult to stage. This is a chance to get together with people who appreciate what we do, and the groups that participate value that opportunity.”

Gamble Rogers is an icon to folk musicians and guitar players not only in Florida but across the US. An active Gamble Rogers Society sponsors a festival every year in St. Augustine in his memory which draws aficionados from across the states. This year, the 23rd Gamble Rogers Festival is scheduled on the same weekend as the opening of Romanza Festivale. The opening events of both festivals occur on May 4. The Gamble Rogers Festival will have four stages featuring local musicians, regional performers, national stars as well
as activities for kids, student music competition winners and story-telling. Headliners will include international greats Peter Rowan and Verlon Thompson. Other featured performers are Mean Mary, Veronica Jackson, the Starlight Trio and over 40 additional acts. Gamble Rogers balanced a love of balladry and folk songs with a passion for the oral tradition and storytelling. Rogers has been described as both a “modern troubadour” and the “resurrection of Will Rogers and Mark Twain.” Rogers was a master performer – enchanting an audience with Travis-style guitar finger picking and relating downright rib-tickling tales about the inhabitants of the fictitious Oklawaha County. Rogers was just hitting his peak when he died, on October 10, 1991, trying to save

The Romanza Chamber Music Series: Three Organists in Concert Memorial Presbyterian Church 32 Sevilla St.
M
Historic, beautiful Memorial Presbyterian Church will host a noon concert given by three accomplished organists: Barb Polomsky, Michael Clark and Ray McDonald. They will perform on the Aeolian Skinner organ located in the balcony at the front of the church which was installed in 1969 and has over 5000 pipes. The organ is an example of one of the “American Classic Organs” built by Aeolian Skinner. In 2000, the console was rebuilt adding new MIDI technology allowing the instrument to be played remotely from six locations in the church. Barb Polomsky, the organist at historic Grace Methodist Church, is classically trained. Her technique and fluency in multiple styles allow her to fully exploit the musical and emotional textures of the organ. Michael Clark, a graduate of Peabody Conservatory and Catholic University, recently retired as a professor at FloArts and is known for his fluency on the keyboard. He has taught piano, organ, music theory and sight-singing at community colleges in Tennessee and Florida. Ray McDonald is the host organist and has been the Director of Music and Organist at Memorial Presbyterian Church for over ten years. He is a valued resource on organ building having spent an apprenticeship with the Flentrop Organ Company in The Netherlands.www.romanzafestivale.com

The band was formed by Ken Every, principal timpanist of the Jacksonville Symphony, who gave the band its name. The original “Guy” is now teaching at Michigan State, but luckily, Ran Kampel, the new principal clarinetist of the Jacksonville Symphony, is joining the band as the new clarinetist. Other members are Paul Strasshofer, a member of the Jacksonville Symphony bass section who claims to have several Jewish friends, and Dennis Hunsicker on accordion. Mr. Hunsicker is one of the few people who actually earned a fouryear degree in accordion and is the only member with a beard. Klezmer is a musical tradition of the Ashkenazi Jews of Eastern Europe. Played by professional musicians called klezmorim, the genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental display pieces for weddings and celebrations. When Yiddish-speaking Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe came to America, they heard American jazz and this style was assimilated into klezmer music. This is the fourth year The Three Tellers have been invited to perform for Romanza Festivale. St. Augustine has always had more than its share of characters, crooks, and scalawags. This year’s event, entitled St. Augustine’s Scoundrels, is guaranteed to be both informative and fun! Members of The Three Tellers are Margaret Kaler, Jane Sims and Wayne Sims. Ms. Kaler tells stories about local and national history, including Women’s Work in WWII and Harriet Tubman, Union Spy. She also portrays Mary Harkness Flagler and Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings for Road Scholars. Other portrayals include Harriet Beecher Stowe, Esther Hill Hawks, Susan B. Anthony and Mother Jones. The Storytelling Sims are humorists, historians and tandem tellers. They tell stories of Florida, the South and Appalachia. The duo has spent 24 years sharing tales and legends at the renowned Florida Folk Festival in White Springs, and 15 years stepping aboard St. Johns Riverkeeper Eco-Heritage boat cruises of the St. Johns River as naturalist William Bartram and author Constance Fenimore Woolson, America’s First Travel Writers. The Sims were featured recently in St. Johns READS library programs presenting St. Johns Cattle Barons, Ranchers, & Cow Hunters.

Sam Pacetti brings it all together: a finger-style guitar wizard; a deft songwriter, capable of haunting depth and wry humor in the space of one song; and an impassioned and ecstatic vocalist. Sam is a mesmerizing live performer, melding head-spinning guitar pyrotechnics and raw emotion. Sam Pacetti grew up in North Florida, hardly known as a hotbed of either the folk tradition or musical innovation. At age 13 he found the music of both Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, profound influences on his early musical development. Then fate intervened shortly afterward in the person of Gamble Rogers, the legendary picker

and raconteur from St. Augustine who took the young Pacetti under his wing. It was a time of astonishing musical and emotional growth. Pacetti and Rogers met and played weekly for a year, until tragically Rogers died while trying to save a drowning tourist caught in an undertow at Flagler Beach. Though brief in their time together, Rogers was able to instill in Pacetti the importance of the folk process, the passing of music and oral tradition from teacher to student. Pacetti still counts Rogers as his most influential mentor.

The Lawson Ensemble was formed in 2015 as a result of group members’ desire to consistently perform chamber music with a high level of excellence and commitment and share the results with the Jacksonville and regional community. Founding members are violinist Aurica Duca, violinist/violist Clinton Dewing and cellist Nick Curry. The group is in residence at the University of North Florida (UNF) in Jacksonville and performs regularly on the UNF campus, in Jacksonville and regionally. In the summer of 2016, the group toured and played concerts in England. Aurica and Clinton are husband and wife and are both full-time members of the Jacksonville Symphony. Nick is the Associate Professor of Cello at UNF. The trio has been together for several years, but a generous donation to the UNF music department last year allowed them to form an official ensemble and to invite other gifted musicians to play with them for select programs. In this concert they have invited guest oboist, Gary Olson, to join them.

Now up to 35 voices, the Youth Chorus serves children eight years old through 18 years old.
The North Florida Women’s Chorale under the direction of Kerry Fradley will present their spring concert, Songs of the Season, as part of the Romanza Chamber Music Series on Saturday, May 12 at noon. The concert will highlight songs representing the four seasons including: Summertime, If You Were Coming in the Fall, Arise My Love, Spring and If Ever I Would Leave You.
“We work to give them correct chorale technique for developing voices,” Kerry says. “We teach them about vocal exercise, breath, and posture … all of the elements to good healthy singing that will carry them throughout the rest of their lives. We use sheet music and teach score reading. They learn notes, rhythms, finding their part and their place in the music.”
Dr. Morgan Stuart, an outstanding classical guitarist from Tallahassee will accompany the chorale and also play a set of solo guitar selections. The Chorale is accompanied by Kathleen Vande Berg.
The Youth Chorus has become an integral part of St. Augustine’s rich arts community.
The Chorale, comprised of women from the Jacksonville/St. Augustine area has been lauded for its adventurous programming and beautiful choral sound.
