On behalf of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke, I am pleased to welcome the delegates, organizers and other participants to Tiohtià:ke (Montreal) for this year’s event. We congratulate Folk Alliance International for their tremendous work promoting and supporting folk music throughout the world. Music is universal to every culture, and is meant to be shared and enjoyed. Folk music is a grassroots style that, in many instances, expresses in the most direct manner the essence of the hopes, dreams and challenges of the society of its creators. With that in mind, I’d like to congratulate Folk Alliance International for hosting the first-ever International Indigenous Music Summit as part of this year’s festivities. We appreciate the efforts to showcase Indigenous artists from around the world and share their gifts and hope that this will become a permanent feature. The great civilizations have always been renowned for their nurturing of the arts. Thus, we must make every effort to appreciate and support the arts, in its many forms. We sincerely hope that you enjoy your time on Kanien’kehá:ka (Mohawk) Territory and have a very successful event!

In Peace and Friendship,

Joseph Tokwiro Norton

A letter from the Board President On behalf of the Board of Directors, I’d like to welcome you all to Montréal and the Folk Alliance International Conference. FAI continues to be the world’s largest gathering of the folk community to showcase, learn, educate, and network. We are thrilled to be back in Canada with all of you to celebrate this year’s conference theme, The Spirit of Creativity. That spirit runs deep in every aspect of our community and takes many forms - from the most brilliant lyric, the achingly beautiful solo, the evocative artwork, and the graceful dance. Creativity is also an essential part of presenting music - finding the right way to curate a concert series or a festival lineup. FAI brings together people from around the world to share ideas and methods to spread the creative spirit globally. This year the Board gathered in North Carolina to build a new strategic plan to keep moving FAI in a forward direction. While always honoring our own history, we continue to make the organization something that stays on top of new challenges within the industry and is a positive leader in equity and inclusion. The incredible FAI staff, led by Aengus Finnan, has worked with the Programming Committee to bring an inclusive and diverse series of showcasing artists, industry mentors and panelists, speakers, and community leaders together to ensure you get the most out of your time at the conference. There will be time to listen, to learn, and to share. With all of the running around that happens, make sure you take the time to talk to old friends and be open to meet new ones. The connections you make here at the conference will last a lifetime. The Board of Directors is proud to serve this organization and this community. We hope that you all find value in your conference experience and that it fuels your own Spirit of Creativity. Thank you for being at this gathering - and we’re looking forward to seeing you all in New Orleans, LA, in 2020!

Matthew Smith

A letter from the Executive Director Welcome to the 31st edition of our conference, and our return to Canada (the village) on the traditional territories of the Kanien’kehá:ka and Kahnawá:ke people who sang the original songs here. Montréal is a city of many nations, proudly francophone, but with a flag that literally symbolizes the first waves of French, Irish, English, and Scottish immigration to Turtle Island (North America), centered by the white pine of the Haudenosaunee. While we gather here to showcase, do business, and build careers, it is also a time to consider the beautiful aspects and genuine challenges that these career-paths entail. Through our programming, we invite all to reflect on what we do, why we do it, and how we can make it safer, healthier, and more inclusive for all. In particular, we invite you to attend our Annual General Meeting on Thursday at 9am and the CommUNITY Gathering on Friday at 1pm (focused on Mental Health and Wellness). Join us for a live-streamed bed-in Saturday morning at 9:30 am to celebrate the 50th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s infamous “Give Peace a Chance” bed-in, and attend the presentation of our UNESCO Artist in Residence program Saturday at 1 pm, prior to our Keynote address by Tanya Tagaq. Thank you to our Board of Directors who devote year-round attention to governing the organization, and who work tirelessly on behind-the-scenes initiatives including advocacy, research, conference programming, and outreach. Finally, I want to extend my profound thanks to our entire Kansas City-based staff and interns, the Montréal advisory committee, our contractors and representatives, and all of the volunteers. This conference, and our success over the past five years would not be possible without their contributions. It is my continued and absolute privilege to work with such a passionate community.

GLOBAL SUMMITS These focused peer sessions are intended to re-introduce a deeper connection to the processes, people, and policies behind the scenes that help establish and maintain the rich ecology of folk music. The summits shake-up the standard panel format and provide an opportunity for a global network of peers to convene in one place to share knowledge, ideas, and goals.

International Indigenous Music Summit Thursday, February 14th 10 am - 3 pm Robbie Robertson Room

Ethnomusicology Summit Thursday, February 14th 10 am - 1 pm Gordon Lightfoot Room

Hosted by Indigenous artist and community leader ShoShona Kish, the one-day summit will gather Indigenous artists, knowledge keepers, and community builders, as well as invited allies, to discuss the most important issues facing the Indigenous music community. This is the first global summit of its kind, and it coincides with the UN’s declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. The summit will focus on creating awareness, building networks, and inciting change in mainstream and Indigenous channels, while also celebrating the historic and ongoing contributions of Indigenous music.

An international gathering of Ethnomusicologists, this summit is facilitated by the Society for Ethnomusicology and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. The focus of discussion is the critique of the idea of “World Music”. While the term is widely used in an effort to appreciate and include non-Western music, many academics and artists have expressed disdain for the term critiquing the reinforcement of orientalist representations of the rest of the world. The summit provides a rare opportunity for industry members to come together and critically discuss the culture of the industry and how concepts of “world music” and “folk music” bolster or hinder musicians involved in their making.

The Global Summits have limited capacity, and pre-application is required at folkconference.org/globalsummits

TOGE T H E R , F OR A GR E E N E R CO N F E R E N C E For the third year, FAI is determined to address the environmental impact of the conference (and year-round events and programs). Please join us in reducing our conference footprint as much as possible in the following ways:

Remember the Four R’s: Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle!

BYOB: Bring your own water bottle!* *To cut down on waste at this year’s conference, disposable water cups will not be available. FAI-branded water bottles are available for purchase at the conference merch table.

Be mindful of trash and recycle whenever possible!

Additional Green Efforts: Once again we’re eliminating posters and flyers on the lobby and conference levels in favor of digital ads! We’re also using recycled paper and soy ink for FAI’s 2500 programs and pocket guides.

WISDOM OF THE ELDERS Special Panel | Saturday, 11:30 am - 12:45 pm Robbie Robertson Room (217) With so many new voices on the scene, countless changes in technology and communication, and the passing of friends and folk legends each year, it’s worth pausing every now and then to celebrate our elders. Many of these community leaders and folk music pioneers have been interviewed individually over the years, but in 2010 Sonny Ochs entertained the idea of presenting legends and luminaries of the folk community in small group settings where they could interact and share stories and perspectives about their experiences over a lifetime in folk music. The first Wisdom of the Elders panel was held at NERFA (the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance) in 2010 and featured Oscar Brand, Theodore Bikel and David Amram.

Ian Tamblyn has been a touring musician since 1972, releasing 42 albums of his songs and compositions and winning a few awards for his work along the way. Ian is presently a fellow of the Royal Canadian Geographic Society. Saturday, February 16th 1 pm - 2 pm Joni Mitchell Room (221)

Keynote Speaker:

Tanya Tagaq “One of today’s most electric, transfixing performers in any genre,” (Rolling Stone). Tanya Tagaq will provide insights into her perspective on our conference theme, “The Spirit of Creativity.”

Tanya is a celebrated Inuk throat singer from Cambridge Bay, Nunavut, in the Canadian Arctic, who employs exquisite, unnerving vocal improvisations that bridge traditional roots with contemporary culture. Tanya is a 2014 Polaris Prize-winning recording artist (Animism), author of a 2018 Scotiabank Giller Prize longlisted novel (Split Tooth), an actress, a painter, and has collaborated extensively with Bjork, Kronos Quartet, Shooglenifty, and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. The recipient of multiple Juno Awards, a Canadian Folk Music Award, and a 2016 International Folk Music Award nominee, her work addresses topics ranging from food sovereignty and environmental issues to the plight of women and Indigenous peoples.

Past FAI keynote speakers have included Judy Collins, Al Gore, Billy Bragg, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Graham Nash, Ani DiFranco, and more.

Her improvised live performance to accompany screenings of Robert J Flaherty’s 1922 silent black-and-white film, Nanook of the North explores the colonial nature of appropriation and recalibrates a contrived “happy Eskimo” facade to a visceral portrayal of a people deeply connected to the land, elements, animals, and spirit. She has been hailed as “forthright and opinionated” (The Guardian), and “fiercely contemporary” (The New York Times) and her novel remains on the Toronto Star’s best-seller list as of January 2019. Tagaq is a mother of two and a Member of the Order of Canada, one of the country’s highest honors.

Saturday, 1 pm, Joni Mitchell Room (221). Just after Tanya Tagaq’s Keynote Address

artist in residence

This year FAI’s Artist in Residence project is a commissioned work to coincide with the United Nations declaration of 2019 as the International Year of Indigenous Languages. In collaboration with UNESCO, FAI invited Twin Flames to consider and converse with Indigenous artists globally to create an original piece that speaks to the importance of language, especially as it relates to identity, culture, and history.

Twin Flames is an Indigenous wife and husband duo (Jaaji, an Inuk Mohawk from Nunavik, and Chelsey June, Algonquin Cree métis from Ottawa). Touring the Arctic and North America, together they echo the voices of their ancestors and depict life on the land as they sing songs in English, Inuttitut and French. They have received top honors at the Canadian Folk Music Awards and the Native American Music Awards. About AIR: Created to foster cultural cross-pollination, diversify audiences, and nurture artistic growth, FAI’s Artist in Residence program (AIR) pairs folk musicians with institutions and community organizations through innovative partnerships. Past projects have paired artists with KC Ballet, the WWI Museum, Topeka Correctional Facility and KCPD, and UMKC’s Math and Statistics Department and the Kansas City Art Institute.

THE S PI P IR I T of CREAT C REATI V I T Y More than just a music industry conference, Folk Alliance International is a place to share and celebrate the time and talent of those who bring music into the world. An artist’s journey is personal, profound, and passionate, and this year’s program seeks to highlight (in classes, panels, workshops, and presentations) the creative process. We invite you to reflect on the things that inspire you in life, how you are creative in your daily life, and how we support the lives and careers of the creative community.

So I pondered the point of my art in this life, if I make it, will someone take it and think that it’s genuine? Would they be glad that I did ‘cause they got something good out of it? Would they leave me and be any more inspired? And I question the outcome of the outpouring of myself, if I tell everyone my stories, would this keep me healthy and well? Would it give me purpose, and to this world some sort of service? Is it worth it? -“Art” How can I tell? by Tanya Davis Friday, February 15 "We Didn't Start the Fire" Songs that Ignite Change Music and Mental Health Challenges and Support CommUNITY Gathering Mental Health and the Music Industry The Song and the Sorrow - FILM SCREENING Saturday, February 16 Artist Advocates in Action Activating Imagination: Technology and Community Source of the Song: Creativity, Discipline, Inspiration

FARM

Folk Alliance Region Midwest

FARM’s 27th annual conference, held in Grand Rapids, MI, in October 2018 was our largest attended conference yet with 350+ attendees, nearly half of whom were first-timers! Grand Rapids will also host our conferences for the next two years. Our conference director, Annie Capps did a phenomenal job planning with immense help from our volunteer director and board member Cindy Morgan. Reverend Robert B. Jones offered a compelling keynote address , encouraging the folk community to “honor our mothers and fathers” of the music industry so that “our careers may be long upon the circuit.” This year we honored Chuck Mitchell as our Lantern Bearer and Dave and Linda Siglin of The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI, as our Lifetime Achievement Award recipients. FARM offered 20 workshops and beautifully curated set of DJ and Official Showcases. Private Showcases kept people awake and entertained into the wee hours of the morning. New programs receiving glowing reviews included Wisdom of the Daves, Mother Jones in Heaven, Presenter Breakfast and Roundtable, the Drop Zone, and Open Mics. We are looking forward to the 2019 Conference at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Big thanks to all of our volunteers, our board of directors, conference director, and of course the presenters and musicians who continue to make FARM better each year. We hope to see you at FARM in 2019! The FARM 2019 conference will be held on October 24-27 in Grand Rapids, MI.

NERFA

NorthEast regional Folk Alliance

More than 700 people converged on Stamford, CT, in November for the 24th annual NERFA Conference. Attendees enjoyed several jam-packed days and nights of music showcases, informative panel discussions and workshops, a keynote by Dar Williams, and mentoring and peer group sessions. This year’s conference welcomed Dan Gottfried, Matthew Ramer, and Daniel Whitener into NERFA’s volunteer board of directors, and a new logo was unveiled along with a website redesign. The board expressed its gratitude to NERFA founder Dianne Tankle, who stepped down from her role as Conference Director following the conference, for all of her efforts on behalf of the organization and community over the years and named Courtney Rodland as interim conference director for 2019. Under the leadership of Michael Kornfeld, the board has been engaged in ongoing efforts to keep the organization active year-round. The MidWinter FolkFest at Club Passim in Cambridge, MA, NERFA Presents Young Folk, and another one-day music festival in partnership with Club Passim, set for March 23, are part of this effort. SERFA

southeast regional folk alliance

SERFA 2018 had such a large turnout that we have officially outgrown our rural site in Montreat! With a record high of 297 attendees at this year’s conference, SERFA is moving the 2019 conference to a full-service conference hotel nearer the center of the region in Chattanooga. We’re looking forward to hosting at the Chattanoogan, which can provide amenities attendees requested and our own wing for seminars, guerrilla showcases, open mics, and exhibit hall. The conference this year had a full host of informational panels guiding artists through songwriting tips, union education, growing your audience, and more. Jim Rooney acted as both Keynote Speaker and a panelist in our Wisdom of the Elders session, alongside Billy Ed Wheeler, Ginny Hawker, and Tracy Schwarz. We presented SERFA Awards to Rooney, Ginny and Tracy, and DJ Michael Stock. This year, we also honored the memory of the late Robert Bobby, a fellow SERFA member, in a musical tribute. SERFA is looking forward to spending its upcoming spring conference in Chattanooga, TN, with generous help from the Riverview Foundation, which has committed to a $50,000 grant spread over two years to ensure our success. The 2019 SERFA Conference will take place on May 15-19 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

S ’ V E O L P I C O E E AWA R D P

Buffy Sainte-Marie Buffy Sainte-Marie is a musician, visual artist, educator, activist, philanthropist, innovator, and folk icon. She has written pop standards that have been sung and recorded by the likes of Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, First Aid Kit, and Elvis Presley, to name a few; penned “Universal Soldier,” the definitive anti-war anthem of the 20th century; recorded one of the world’s first electronic vocal albums; and spent five years on Sesame Street, where she became the first woman to breastfeed on national television. Buffy Sainte-Marie is also the first, and only, Indigenous woman to win an Academy Award. In 2018’s climate of damaging rhetoric and toxic hubris, Buffy Sainte-Marie’s incisive honesty, clarity, and intelligent compassion stand out in sharp relief. After more than 50 years in the music industry, Buffy SainteMarie continues to be a thrilling and necessary artist and activist. She is the recipient of this year’s People’s Voice Award for the message in her music, her voice regarding Indigenous issues, cultural awareness, and the environment, her trailblazing role as a woman in the music industry, and for the continued work of her Nihewan Foundation and the Cradleboard Teaching Project.

The People’s Voice Award is presented to an individual who unabashedly embraces social and political commentary in their creative work and public careers. Past recipients include Bruce Cockburn (2017) and Bonnie Raitt (2018).

Folk Alliance International’s People’s Voice Award is not connected to, inspired by, or affiliated with any other entities that share the same name, or similar iteration of the title “The People’s Voice.” folk.org | Folk Alliance International Conference 2019

The Hillside Festival is a three-day, multi-stage event with a broad artistic vision that takes place at an accessible conservation area at Guelph Lake, Ontario. The festival’s mission is to celebrate creativity through artistic expression, community engagement, and environmental leadership. In the ‘80s, Hillside made a commitment to continue greening initiatives on-site at the festival each year, designed to keep the earth clean and green and to include as many people as possible. These initiatives include using hand pushed carts instead of golf carts on site, bike brigades to the festival, shuttle buses paid for by onsite parking charges, free potable water, solarpowered phone charging stations, pedal-powered stages, compost and recycling stations, reusable cups and cutlery with dishwashing facilities, and a living “green roof” on the Mainstage that doubles as a garden.

The Clearwater Award is presented annually to a festival that prioritizes environmental stewardship and demonstrates public leadership in sustainable event production. Past recipients include the Clearwater Festival (2017) and the Winnipeg Folk Festival (2018).

Originally named Southern Rag and later Folk Roots, fRoots is a quarterly magazine published in Farnham, Surrey, England. The publication has always dedicated itself to discovering up-and-coming artists in the folk scene. Since its start in 1979, fRoots has regularly and punctually reported on breakthrough musicians. LEGACY Leonard Cohen Born in Montréal, Quebec, Canada, Leonard Cohen began his career as a poet and novelist (The Spice Box of Earth, The Favourite Game, Beautiful Losers). Moving to New York City, he began a career as a songwriter, quickly being covered by his peers, most notably Judy Collins. Iconic songs include “Suzanne,” “So Long, Marianne,” “Bird on a Wire,” and “Hallelujah!” An ordained Buddhist monk, his creative work was introspective and often centered on themes of spirituality, sexuality, and politics. Cohen once said in an interview, “I don’t consider myself a civilian. I consider myself a soldier.” He saw it his duty to keep politics close to his music and give light to the suffering and hopes of the world, no matter where they might be. His work is featured in multiple tribute albums including Tower of Song, I’m Your Fan, and Famous Blue Raincoat. Cohen’s 60-year career firmly established his legacy in the music industry. He was the winner of five Juno and three Grammy Awards, was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Recording Academy, and is the recipient of the Order of Canada. He was also inducted into the Songwriter Hall of Fame, and received the prestigious Glenn Gould Prize.

Although her music has explored various genres, Mitchell has always remained close to her folk roots, often reflecting environmental and social issues. After winning a 1969 GRAMMY for Best Folk Performance, she slowly evolved her style to incorporate jazz fusion and pop rock elements. Her iconic songs “Both Sides Now,” “Circle Game,” “Free Man in Paris,” and “Big Yellow Taxi” are widely covered across all genres. A visual artist and entrepreneur, Mitchell produced and designed covers for most of her albums. A nine-time GRAMMY awardee, she received a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award and was inducted into both the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Alfredo Caxaj

Ellen Hamilton

When Alfredo Caxaj arrived in Toronto as a political refugee of Guatemala, he was astounded by the vibrancy and life offered by the city. It is this same feeling that Caxaj strives to bring to the city of London, Ontario every July and at concerts throughout the year as founder and Artistic Director of Sunfest. Alfredo has worked relentlessly to produce one of the largest festivals in Canada, and by keeping the festival free to all ages, he opens the world of folk to an audience who may not otherwise have access. Alfredo is a champion for diversity and inclusion, and he is committed to a rotating lineup that ensures upand-coming artists are provided coveted performance opportunities. At conferences worldwide, he is first to hit the dancefloor and is known as the guy waving his white towel.

In addition to leading her band, Night Sun, for almost 20 years, Ellen Hamilton is a film producer, director, and writer. Originally from southern Canada, she has dedicated her career to supporting the Inuit artists of the Canadian Arctic from her home in Iqaluit, on Baffin Island. She is the current Executive Director of Qaggiavutt, a society dedicated to building a rehearsal and performance space in Nunavut; the only territory in North America to not have an arts center. She also leads the Qaggiq Project to bring traditional artists to the world stage. For her life of advocacy and promotion of traditional Inuit performance she has been honored with the Order of Nunavut, and the Order of Canada.

Gilles garand

Matt Smith

Gilles Garand has led a life of service dedicated to workers’ rights and the promotion of folk music. His 20-year career as a trade union adviser for the Confederation of National Trade Unions focused on uniting workers through song. A life-long resident of Montréal, Gilles has worked as chairman of the Society for the Promotion of Quebec Traditional Dance, is the president of Folquébec, and a former board member of FAI. He is also the founder of La Grande Rencontre, a festival of traditional Québécois music, which celebrated its 26th year last September. Gilles is an avid musician, and his promotion of traditional music and culture has been featured in multiple publications. He is looking forward to handing over the reins of many projects to the next generation.

Since his start in 1995 at the legendary folk club, Passim, in Boston’s Harvard Square, Matt Smith has touched the lives and careers of thousands of artists in his role as a presenter, organizer, and passionate music community member. In addition to booking the legendary venue, he has been an industry panelist, juror, and a mentor to emerging artists. His insatiable love of music, interest in cultivating community, and keen ear for curation led him to launch the annual Campfire Festival over two decades ago, providing a gathering place to showcase east-coast emerging talent. Matt has volunteered multiple terms on the Board of Directors of FAI, serving two years on the Executive Committee before his two-year role as Board President during which he oversaw the board creation of the 2018-2021 Strategic Plan.

Michael Wrycraft

ShoShona Kish

Michael Wrycraft’s reputation for fine work, coupled with his tirelessly cheerful attitude, has made him the graphic designer of choice among the folk music industry for nearly three decades. His signature style is widely celebrated, earning him a Juno Award, a Hamilton Music Award, two Independent Music Awards, and multiple nominations. In addition to working with FAI from 1998 to the 2018 conference, Michael’s designs can be seen on countless album covers and event posters throughout the folk industry. A pillar of the folk community, Michael continues to share his love of folk music on his weekly radio shows, From Cover to Cover and Radio Wrycraft, and at his regular tribute nights at Toronto’s premier folk club, Hugh’s Room.

Just as folk music defies societal norms, ShoShona Kish is constantly surprising anyone who attempts to put her in a box. Rejecting a lifetime of colonial expectations, ShoShona openly explores topical, and often uncomfortable issues, treating music as a call to action in her musical duo, Digging Roots. In 2017, she co-organized ‘Anishinaabekwe’, a touring performance commissioned by the National Art Centre to showcase the diversity in Indigenous performers. She currently serves as the President of Folk Music Canada, and is spearheading the inaugural International Indigenous Music Summit at this year’s Folk Alliance International conference. Earlier this fall she received the 2018 Professional Excellence award from WOMEX.

Sonny Ochs

Sofia Rei

Sonny is an acclaimed music producer and radio host. She is known for organizing the “Phil Ochs Song Nights” in memory of her activist brother, singersongwriter Phil Ochs. While an English teacher in Brooklyn, she stumbled into a career as a disc jockey, spinning folk records for WFMU and WRPI. Sonny has hosted a radio program called Folk Music & Other Stuff since the 1980s and currently hosts a program on WIOX. Sonny volunteers at numerous folk festivals and conferences. She is the founder and host of the Wisdom of the Elders panel, a recorded interviewstyle panel event with senior folk music community leaders which she has presented at FAI, regional conferences, and Folk Music Ontario.

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and based in New York City, Sofia Rei ties together musical influences from South America, jazz, and electronica. Singing mostly in Spanish, she has performed in theaters and festivals worldwide and her workshops often include educational components revealing the socio-cultural roots and cross-pollination of music. Sofia has worked with Berklee College of Music’s Global Initiatives since 2011 and is now an Assistant Arts Professor at the very prestigious Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music (at NYU) where she teaches Performance, Musicianship and a class on New Perspectives in Latin American Music.

Wanda Fischer

Matt Watroba

“Whispering” Bob Harris OBE has been at the very heart of UK music scene for the best part of fifty years. He has established a worldwide reputation as one of the most trusted and influential broadcasters of his generation - described by Radio Times as “...one of the greats of British contemporary music broadcasting” and by The Mail On Sunday as “a national treasure.” Few people have taken as many bands into mainstream consciousness as Bob Harris - from his groundbreaking work in the 1970’s on BBC Radio 1 and the legendary Old Grey Whistle Test TV shows to his current program Bob Harris Country on BBC Radio 2. Iconic artist Robert Plant stated, “He champions the unknown, the obscure and legendary with equal zest and detail.”

Born in Tennessee and raised in the Boston area, Wanda Fischer learned about folk music as a child from her father, who was a close friend of members of the Carter Family. During the 1960s, she frequented the Boston-area coffeehouses, sometimes as a performer, sometimes a spectator. In 1975, she volunteered at a community radio station and found herself doing a folk music show on the air for four years. After moving to the Albany, New York are in 1982, WAMC-FM, a major NPR affiliate, finally acquiesced and gave her a spot on Saturday night, following A Prairie Home Companion. She’s been on the air since then with The Hudson River Sampler for the past 36 years, for a total of 40 years in radio. She still plays and sings sometimes, for fun now.

As a radio host and performer, Matt Watroba has spent most of his adult life sharing his knowledge and passion for folk music with just about anyone who would listen. He made his radio debut as producer and host of the popular Folks Like Us program, a show that ran for over two decades on Detroit public radio. He has interviewed hundreds of performers, from Pete Seeger to Townes Van Zandt, and he has hosted and produced syndicated shows for Sing Out! Magazine and Folk Alley. Matt has contributed programming to WEMU in Ypsilanti, MI, WKSU in Kent, OH, and is currently on WKAR in East Lansing, MI.

BEST of 2018 The following are the finalists for the 2018 Album, Song, and Artist of the Year. This shortlist is based on US, Canadian, and International industry year-end lists as well as Folk DJ airplay. Winners are determined by the voting membership of FAI and the results are announced during the International Folk Music Awards on February 13 in the Joni Mitchell Room (221).

Ethnomusicology Summit Gordon Lightfoot Room (213) An international gathering of Ethnomusicologists, this summit is facilitated by the Society for Ethnomusicology and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Advance sign up required.
