VALKOMMEN / WELCOME WELCOME / SPONSORS

Folk Alliance International (FAI) is thrilled to welcome you to our inaugural Nordic micro-conference, The ExChange, with attendees joining us from Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Egypt, Canada, and the United States.

THANK YOU PARTNERS!

FAI is a non-profit headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, that strives to preserve, promote, and present folk music globally. We proudly produce the world’s largest folk music conference each year, in addition to the International Folk Music Awards. This ExChange marks the first time we have mounted an event in Scandinavia in our 30-year history. The intent of this gathering is to forge folk industry relationships, strengthen networks, showcase export-ready talent, celebrate legends, and discuss the opportunity to establish a Nordic Folk Alliance organization and annual conference. Scandinavia has an incredible legacy of folk music, composers, schools, and festivals. It has also had a profound influence on North American folk music, and a strong history of artist showcases and export partnerships with FAI. Thank you to Aslak Oppebøen (Music Norway), Laia Kverneland, (Tempi - Denmark), Jesper Thorsson, (Export Music Sweden), Henna Salo (Music Finland), and Virgo Sillamaa (Music Estonia) for their ongoing support. Thanks also to Frida Rosen Babarik at Bilda, Fredrik Sandsten at Gothenburg & Co., the extended team at Live At Heart, and many more who have provided advice. A final thank you to all who have joined us. We deeply appreciate the time you’ve taken to gather here to strengthen the Nordic folk music industry and to build a bridge to international markets. Tusen tack! Thank you!

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD – ALE MOLLER Tuesday, April 10th, 1pm – Pustervik, Gothenburg

Since 1995, Folk Alliance International has presented Lifetime Achievement Awards to living, legacy, and academic/organizational recipients. Past recipients include Pete Seeger, Odetta, Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Harry Belafonte, and Dónal Lunny as well as SingOut!, American Folklife Center, and Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Swedish multi-instrumentalist and folk music pioneer, Ale Möller is the first Nordic recipient of this award.

Born in 1955, Möller has been expanding the borders of Scandinavian folk music in groups and/or projects such as Filarfolket, Nordan, Frifot, Stockholm Folk Music Big Band, and most recently, the Ale Möller Trio. Möller began in jazz with trumpet as his primary instrument. He then fell in love with Greek music and the Swedish folklore tradition, especially from the province of Dalecarlia. Improvisation is a hallmark component of Möller’s music and he has been a central figure in the search for new directions and sounds in Swedish folk music. In addition to continued touring, Möller composes music for films and theater, he is a professor of World Music in Sweden, Finland, and Denmark. Möller has served as an advisor for legendary Senegalese singer and Polar Music Prize recipient, Youssou N’Dour. Möller is a recipient of the Sir George Martin award, eight Swedish Grammy awards, and several medals from His Majesty the King of Sweden.

A full list of past recipients can be viewed at www.folk.org/lifetime.

TRAD.ATTACK!

TRIO WOLSKI

Baden Württemberg, Germany www.tradattack.ee

Tallinn, Estonia http://www.triowolski.org

Trad.Attack! play their own interpretation of Estonian folk, drawing inspiration from archive recordings of Estonian folk singers and musicians who created music for work, leisure, and festivities in the old times. Trad.Attack! brings their voices to the 21st century, building a modern sound and pulsating rhythmic structures around them. Trad.Attack! create an impressively big sound from an acoustic 12-string guitar, drums, an array of whistles, bagpipe, and mouth harps. Since their debut in 2014, they’ve received 17 Music Awards in Estonia, released two internationally acclaimed albums, toured in over thirty countries playing significant festivals such as WOMEX and WOMAD.

We are three young musicians living in Malmö. We met at the Music Academy in Malmö and have played together since 2016. The unity in our musical expressions felt right from the beginning. In our music we make room for improvisation, fine melody lines, and well- written arrangements. Our aim is to create a borderless, profound, and personal sound. The music is based on the Scandinavian folk tradition but simultaneously challenges the approach in surprising ways.
