WELCOME/spONSORS WELCOME / SPONSORS
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land, on which we gather, the Wadawurrung People of the Kulin Nation. We pay our respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.
On behalf of the board and staff of Folk Alliance International (FAI), I am delighted to welcome you to the Australian edition of The ExChange, a micro-conference designed to build relationships, strengthen networks, showcase export-ready folk artists, and celebrate legends. FAI is a global non-profit based on the traditional territory of the Osage and Kansa nations, in Kansas City, MO, USA. Our mission is to serve, strengthen, and engage the global folk music community through preservation, presentation, and promotion. We produce the world’s largest folk music conference each year in addition to presenting the International Folk Music Awards. The decision to hold an event in Australia (for the first time in our 32-year history) was based on the deep legacy of folk music and cultural traditions in Australia, an incredible network of acclaimed festivals, and a remarkable array of organizations and individuals that support folk music in its many traditional and contemporary variations. Profound thanks are due to Caroline Moore and the Port Fairy Folk Festival team as the presenting partner of this event. Without their support, guidance, and resources, this event would not have been possible. Thanks also to Sheena Keane as FAI’s ExChange Coordinator, to Chloe Goodyear who serves as Australia’s first FAI Board member, and to Sounds Australia for their ongoing relationship with FAI. A final thank you to you all for taking the time to be here. Let this be the beginning of a more connected and collaborative future.

AWARD & SHOWCASE ARTISTS LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD: DR. JAMIE MCKEW OAM Monday, March 2, 8.00 PM – Geelong Library & Heritage Centre
Jamie McKew is the founder and recently retired director of the world-renowned Port Fairy Folk Festival (now in its 43rd year). Known as “the gentleman of the folk scene”, Jamie also founded the Geelong Folk Festival in 1978 and the Turramurra Folk Camp in 1983, along with being the founding president of Folk Alliance Australia; a series of logical steps for a bush-band player who thrives on community and a love of great music. Jamie’s nurturing of community within his events is a natural extension of his great love for people; whether artists, colleagues, or patrons. This is perhaps nowhere better exemplified than when he once said of his 40-year career as a GP, “people often just need someone to talk to”. Jamie’s organic connections to the community of Port Fairy (his grandmother’s hometown) and the musical community are at the heart of the festival’s success. The festival contributes about $15 million to the local economy each year and oversees a grant system that has put more than $4 million back into the town, which funded a $750,000 redevelopment of the local hospital and rescue boats for the surf club. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1996 for his services to music in Geelong and Western Victoria. As an elder and leader of the Australian folk scene, Jamie has been instrumental in the development of a collaborative, cooperative nature within the folk community. His legacy is enduring, and his contribution is far from over.
