“E-Recovery” A Solution to e-waste issue in Accra Type: Industrial Site: Accra, Ghana Team: Yusuff Abdulakeem Role: Research, Design and Visualization Year: 2021 Inspired by the Agbogbloshie scrapyard’s unique role as both a symbol of technology’s downside and a hub for urban mining, this project explores the potential of circular systems, harnessing e-waste as a valuable resource. Guided by nature’s principles, E-recovery is an E-waste Recycling and Material Recovery Plant that seeks to efficiently recycle e-waste while aligning with functional and sustainable ecosystem-like requirements. Additionally, the building serves as an example of biomimicry’s application in Ghana, offering functional and sustainable solutions for the country. 6

1. Topography analysis guided site zoning, conserving energy/resources, minimizing on-site work.

Selected Works

2. Identified rainwater gathering and polluted zones. Avoided zoning in these areas, utilizing them for phytoremediation and landscaping

3. Overlayed and developed analyses to identify optimal buildable areas to locate zones

4. Bubble diagrams produced by examining the different site conditions.

SITE PLANNING

10

Nature of Site: The chosen development site in Agbogbloshie faces challenges from informal e-waste recycling, leading to environmental contamination. Metal leaching and surface issues are evident, but a pit trial uncovered a clay formation suitable for light structures, with improved compaction over time. Strategy: Informed by nature, the design process prioritized zero-waste systems. Emphasizing local attunement and system optimization, the design responded to site conditions—terrain, wind, climate. The goal was architecture seamlessly integrated with the site, akin to organic plant and tree growth. A detailed site analysis informed this nature-driven design approach. 11

DESIGN CONCEPT The design proposed echoes the tree’s structure. The main building, akin to a tree canopy, provides shade, harvests water, and generates energy. The structure, resembling the trunk, facilitates service movement between canopy and floor. The building sublevel, akin to tree roots, supports the structure and manages service transfer, housing a basement for storing and distributing final recycled products— mimicking the nutrient absorption function of tree roots. 12

“The Shade & The Screen” A Solution to school under trees in Ghana Type: Educational Site: Hamile, Ghana Team: Yusuff Abdulakeem Role: Research, Design and Visualization Year: 2019 Set against the backdrop of the Tumu-Hamile road in the Upper-West region of Ghana, “The Shade and the Screen,” draws inspiration from the rich African tradition of storytelling under trees. The strategy involved creating a simple building that seamlessly integrates with the existing trees on the site. Comprising a large mono-pitch roof providing essential ‘shade,’ rammed earth walls defining classrooms and spaces, and bamboo ‘screens’ enveloping the entire school, the concept champions functionality, local material use, and harmonious integration with the natural surroundings. This architectural solution serves not only to address the immediate need for proper learning spaces but also to celebrate the adaptability of design to cultural contexts 26

“Oly-Dorf Pavilion” Collaborative Pavilion Design with Mobile AR Type: Pavilion Site: Munich, Germany Team: Yusuff Abdulakeem, Acheampong Emmanuel Role: Research, Design and PostYear: 2021 This design concept explores surface and catenary structures, employing mobile augmented reality to ignite the collaborative construction of intricate forms. The process involves deconstructing a catenary form into manageable panels and establishing an efficient joinery and assembly technique for the pavilion. Guided by form-finding techniques, a catenary shell structure emerged as the foundational design step. The resulting form underwent intentional planarization into smaller triangular panels, strategically reduced to the least number of similar units. The curvilinear form introduces a striking contrast within its surroundings, enticing interaction with its simple yet intriguing shape 36

BUILDING KIT In the building kit design, the modular triangle takes center stage, forming a flexible framework for curved surfaces. The main panel, comprising three sandwiched equilateral triangles with cutouts in the middle triangle for connectors, is secured by bolts and screws. Crafted from a rigid yet flexible metal, the connectors allow rotation in both vertical and horizontal axes when two panels join. This dynamic assembly method provides users with the flexibility to create structures with various design configurations based on their preferences. 38

INTEGRATING MOBILE AR Leveraging the mobile AR interface, we communicated assembly sequences, testing its effectiveness. In a collaborative effort, two individuals work together to meticulously assemble the form, with the phone holder directing the second person. The iterative process repeats until the entire structure takes shape, ensuring seamless integration. 42
