The Department of Environmental Inquiry represents an architectural change that is designed to occur on the body of one of Fort Lauderdale’s Intracoastal. With awareness of upcoming climate change that will invoke a shift in architecture and urban design of Fort Lauderdale, the project envisions the life of an ecologically-oriented society with special interest in upcycling.

Taking off the ground as a public platform inviting to participation in ecological workshops and covered with the gleaming body of the auditorium, the building transforms into an institutional establishment with priority in environmental discovery and ecological investigation. The coincidence of social, topographical and climatic characteristics of the location sets the Department of Environmental Inquiry as an axis on a necessary turning point for further programming of Fort Lauderdale’s underwater future.

Wind analysis
The floor plan shape is designed to be an aerodynamic machine to harvest maximum wind and direct it to wind turbines for energy generation and ventilation. The optimum curvature of the balconies covered in some places with plastic cushion inserts not only catches the airflow, but also tends to accelerate it. Wind analysis: Top floors

Residential, art and nightlife programs meet necessity of a public platform and administrative stage. The physical placement of the project calls for meeting the ground by liberating the corners for pedestrian activity and accentuating public access from the Intracoastal to the beach. A Lateral axis lies within the landscape that separates conventional and unconventional circulation from each other.

Progressing directly to the lustrous top level, there is a narrowing into a more compact office administration space. Sleek outlines separate the end of the tower from the surroundings, which illustrates metaphorically the nature of the executive instigator of environmental discourse in society.

The ground level of the project is casting a sequence of voids: from the entrance courtyard the observers are exposed to the visual weight of the gleaming body of the auditorium followed by the crossing of vertical and horizontal perspectives of the Metro rail bridge and a shaft for the high-speed elevator serving both buildings and the proposed Metro Rail station. The sculptural effect of the pedestals represented by a platform, two volumes comprising the Upcycle Workshop Center, and the glazed torus of the Department of Environmental Inquiry, defining the civic space that develops into the research agency.

The Department of Environmental Inquiry is an institution that fosters and inculcates the philosophy of infinite regeneration of energy staring from discarded trivial components of human necessities like food, clothes, furniture and appliances into intangible values as energy, knowledge and, most importantly, ideas. Inspired by the concept of material reincarnation, the model consists out of recycled paper, old magazine collages, plastic bottles and bags.

Sand and adjustable casts were the main agents in the bottom-up, form-finding process. Aggregates consist of finer particles which set up the behavior of the material when looked at larger quantities. Sand as the product of weathering and erosion on the smaller scale acts as a crystal of a mineral. In nature, the bigger amounts of sand like dunes, pits and landslides act to find an optimal shape to resist gravity, wind, water and earthquakes. In our experiment, the sand was explored as an agent which delivered structural simulations under the rules borrowed from the logic of Jorn Utzon’s self-organizing structures.

Through the precedent study of Antonio Gaudi’s work and its analysis by Mark Burry the parallel was made between sand self-forming processes and strict geometrical schema of the design of the Sagrada Familia Cathedral. Particularly, the application of rotated hyperboloids and the system of their intersections was intuitively adopted into the process of form – finding and later, was supported by experiments studying its structural

Von Mises Force (lower stress)
In the work of Jorn Utzon such as the Sydney Opera House, the Kuwait National Assembly and the Zurich Theatre, the idea of adjustable casts was connected to the structural performance. Virtually, the structural roof modules of these projects consisted of infinite numbers of structurally sufficient profiles to explore the full system capacity. Realistically, the task of designing an infinitely great number of options is impossible, but the application of associative rules on a virtual level can provide endless results. page 21

Casting is another physical form of the loose aggregate which underwent the process of solidification, whether when combined with the binding mixture or just hardened by pressure or temperature. Casting is a snapshot of possible consequences of aggregate behaviour iterations and it is solidified for a very particular use. Although the consistency of the cast formula is homogenous, the sectional qualities may vary in pursue of the material optimization and the structural stability.

Let’s transform a machine of war into an architectural instrument of conciliation and regeneration while preserving its dignity!
3 2 1
Once a vigilante of the seas, this powerful machine is being DECOMMISSIONED, making way for more upgraded systems. Out of six submarines, three have been dismantled and THREE REMAIN. Dismantling this great machine carries great COST and SAFETY ISSUES. But there is an ALTERNATIVE... Taking advantage of its GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION, our proposal conspicuously takes on the responsibility of RIVER RESTORATION for the benefit of Russia and of all nations sharing the Baltic sea, while at the same time providing a CULTURAL AND SCIENTIFIC POINT where citizens of Kaliningrad can converge.
Pioneers a solution to an international problem by repurposing the submarine of subject and suggesting potential repurposing of the remaining two submarines under the same water restoration effort at different locations along the city’s lagoon, closer to the Baltic Sea

Three 20’ standard Trimo modular container units create spaces for exhibit/seating areas and the bike quick repair shop. The three modules are encased on Akripol Aglas SS translucent PMMA coloured cladding, which is fastened to the modular unit corners. The space receives natural daylight through the use of Aglas/Alux cast acrylic skylights. Spaces are vertically connected through an exterior stairway moving in analogy to a bicycle’s chain. These feature thermoformed Aglas SS -made guardrails.

The third “battery”, composed of vertically-mounted, insulated smooth profile curved Ivisio facade system panels with galvanized finish, houses the juice bar/pastry shop. Here, riders approach the bar area and place their bicycles on the stand. Once the bike is secure, he/ she propels the dynamo at their own pedaling pace, powering his/her electronic device by using familiar and readily-available technology similar to that of the hand-cranked dynamo-based radio.

The developer-owned, still unbuilt areas of downtown Doral facing 54th street will be built soon. However, if this is not done in a way that embraces the warehouses to the north, the usage boundary and virtual wall will remain, the future residents could declare the warehouses an eyesore. An opportunity to bring all kinds of value to the city will be missed. This initiative encourages the neighbours of the future Downtown Doral to engage the developer during this time of shift

Developer’s Proposal Calls for residential uses on the upper 2 floors of buildings and commercial uses on the entire ground floor, as well as commercial on the ground floor, offices on the middle floors and residential on the top floors. Progressive engagement Allows wide sidewalks, ability to extended to allow additional architectural elements and additional landscaping. Important for the local residents.
Inclusive smart development Calls for “warehouses with an office and/or commercial space. (...) Intended to support the commercial showrooms in the Core Sub-district. Artisan studios may also be housed in this district. Loft style apartments are also be permitted on the upper floor of this district.” page 48

Individual brand food boutiques play an important role in the food hall mix. They represent a strong presence for the department stores, and they give customers an international selection of brands and products. The City Market was proposed as an urban experience of a rustic fine foods shopping. The main products—fruits and vegetables, the butcher shop, the fish market, the deli, bakery, wine cava and cafÊ—in a series of divided rooms. This elevates the importance of each separate space and the products it contains.

Pizzeria Slice is a concept of urban restaurant for locals who enjoy Italian cuisine and rustic coffee shops. The word ‘slice‘ represents the mastership of the chef who cuts the best ingredients to explore its taste and prepare an irresistible dish. With its unique location, Slice shares its facades with interior as well as exterior surrounding. The interior of the restaurant is a dual personality of artisan forno for baking pizza, and sweet creamy look of a coffee shop.
