Aqua Rift In Car Bathing Solution The objective was to design a product that would benefit homeless while living on the streets.
4 justin.fontaine@att.net
justin.fontaine@att.net 5
Homeless individuals do not have enough places to bathe, which causes body odor. Homeless are often rejected from society for their smell or appearance.
6 justin.fontaine@att.net
In 2015 there were 564,708 people experiencing homelessness in the United States. 31% were found in unsheltered locations (streets, abandoned buildings, cars, etc.).
In San Jose alone there are
600 homeless living in their cars.
justin.fontaine@att.net 7
Why in the car?
Goal
An in car bathing solution gives the user more of a sense of safety and privacy while inside the vehicle.
To create a safe and comfortable space for a person to bathe in their vehicle.
8 justin.fontaine@att.net
Requirements Must be... Easy to clean Lightweight Low Cost Easy to understand how to use Soft surface will not damage vehicle interior
Should be...
User Scenario
Larry lives in his car and was kicked out of his long term location. He ended up in a Walmart parking lot where he felt more welcomed, but he still did not have a good place to bathe. Larry was caught washing his hair in the Walmart bathroom and he was told not to do it again. Not bathing resulted in Larry having bad body odor, which led to a lower self esteem and many people in society treated him differently.
Durable Metal Frame Electronics free Easy to remove and install from vehicle Able to handle low/high weight loads Repairable with cheap materials

Car Living Ideation The final design evolved and was simplified for ease of use and production. The final design has a split arm that drops down for entry.
I saw potential for in car bathroom needs.
Explored ways of improving comfort in car seat.
10 justin.fontaine@att.net
Explored products to help calm the user such as car garden.
Once deciding on a bathing solution it became clear that simple was the better solution.
justin.fontaine@att.net 11
Mock-Ups A major design decision during the mock-up phase was the use of a folding lounge chair to lower cost and manufacturing complexity. Many of my mock-ups were used to refine the frame design, which changed dramatically throughout the design process. Each image depicts a different mock-up and test interaction which consisted of testing for ergonomics, frame functionality and vehicle fit.

justin.fontaine@att.net 13
Aqua Rift How it Came Together Utilizing a folding lounge chair frame helped keep cost down and can be an outlet to keep disused chairs out of landfills. The only part of the frame that is not uilized is one of the legs of the chair.
14 justin.fontaine@att.net
The fabric hangs down on the inside of the frame and the velcro flaps fold over the bar on the top edge.
justin.fontaine@att.net 15

The excess water that is funneled into the tray can be easily disposed of after each use. justin.fontaine@att.net 19
Storage The bag is used to contain Aqua Rift when not in use, making it easier to store in a trunk or back seat.

Accidents Happen
A family of four, which includes parents in their early 40’s and their two 13 year old sons.
During one of their rock climbing trips one of the boys breaks an ankle and causes the trip to be extended 3 days to get him back safely.

Inspired by a French press.
Explored gravity assisted filtration.
Explored ways of creating a soft compact bottle.
Key: Identified mechanism. Uses suction through plunger for filtration.

The form factor was driven by ergonomics for two handed use.
Because Pure could clip to your waist I explored conturing form to user.
A mixture of soft and rigid materials were used for a compact concept The final mock up used a combination of a soft interior and rigid ergonomically shaped exterior. justin.fontaine@att.net 29

The molded hole is used for a carabiner and the spring loaded button is the drinking spout. When closed it allows the bottle to hold pressure when filtering water through the bottom.
Pure extends at the base to work like a pump to suck water up from the bottom to hold one liter of water.

Scatter Case A compact and customizable phone case that keeps essential belongings safe.
60 justin.fontaine@att.net
justin.fontaine@att.net 61
Target Demographic Our users enjoy social activities such as hanging out with friends at bars, going to music festivals, and going on road trips. Millennials are the largest age group in the US at 75.4 million. They tend to be environmentally conscious, technology savvy, and adventurous.
62 justin.fontaine@att.net
Existing Issues There are very few slim wallet cases on the market. The typical phone case only protects your phone if dropped, they do not help you keep the phone in your hand.

64 justin.fontaine@att.net
Prototyping 3D printed prototypes allowed for refinements to the concept to improve both usability and manufacturability.
justin.fontaine@att.net 65
Its All in the Details The U shaped texture on the inside of the case allows for a pinch point for the elastic between the phone and the case.
Adjusted camera slot for both Iphone 6 and 7
Drop down for elastic to pass through
Textured grip
Refined radii to protect phone while leaving accessory ports accessible

Materials: Elastomer Powder Modified Thermoplastics EPMT uses recycled rubber from pieces such as worn out tires to be used in high quality plastic parts.
justin.fontaine@att.net 67
Customizable Scatter Case allows the user to personalize their case with different colored cases and elastic bands. Users are more likely to keep their case for a longer period of time with the ability to change out bands and keep the case looking new and different.
68 justin.fontaine@att.net
Packaging The fabric packaging keeps excess plastics out of the packaging, while still displaying the case and elastic band colors using the package.
