Wild Summer Days Wild Summer Days is back! Each week a different topic will be explored through centers, animal visitors, walks and outdoor play. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Check the calendar at fontenelleforest.org to learn the weekly topic. This proJuly 10 gram is for children ages 11 and younger. 6:30p.m. - 8:30p.m. WLC Mud Pies Leader: Lisa CuevasDrop by to explore nature activities with your child. One adult is required for every Jorgensen two children. A different natural science topic is introduced each week through interactive stations within “Habitat Hollow”. Check the calendar at fontenelleforest.org to learn the weekly topic. This program is for children ages 5 and younger.

PROGRAMS NABA Butterfly Count Mark your calendar now. Fontenelle Forest will be participating in the annual butterfly count sponsored by the North American Butterfly Association. People of all ages and knowledge levels are welcome to help for all or part of the day. Register by June 30th at fontenelleforest.org/naba.

July Campfire Program: America the Beautiful Come celebrate the Fourth of July forest style! Bring a buddy and a blanket to sit on, and we will talk about the beautiful amber waves of grain as well as the natural symbols of America. The evening will end with lemonade, so please bring a cup!

Yoga in the Forest Join us for an hour-long vinyasa style yoga class, surrounded by nature, designed to de-stress and relax you. This class is accessible for all levels of yogis, from beginner to experienced, and will feature the sounds of the forest as your soundtrack as you move towards complete wellness. A meditative walk will follow the class, ending with tea for those who can stay.

Friday Night (Twi)Lights Everyone needs a breather! Disconnect from your work week and connect with the great outdoors right here in the Forest. This evening hike will be a relaxing and energizing start to your weekend. Note: please wear appropriate shoes; bug spray is recommended and water bottles encouraged.

Family Sundays in the Forest: From the Glaciers to the Settlers Come join master naturalist Clem Klaphake on a hike on History Trail. As we hike, Clem will discuss the changes in Fontenelle Forest starting with the last Ice Age and progressing to the occupation by early Native Americans, the Lewis and Clark Expedition and finally European settlers. The hike will entail walking 1.5 miles in hilly terrain, and is best suited for those 12 years and older. Appropriate clothing, walking shoes, and water bottles are highly encouraged. We will meet at the main building, then drive to Camp Wakonda.

Dirt Time: A Tracking Adventure Learning to track animals requires many hours in the field, often on your hands and knees, studying animal signs up close. This is the dirt time, literally time to look and dig and track in the dirt. Come prepared for the weather and the great possibility of muddy boots...the more mud, the easier it is to find tracks!

Family Sundays in the Forest: Write in the Forest Explore the sights and sounds of the forest through the lens of writing! Poet, teacher, and master naturalist Jeff Lacey will lead you on a trek through the forest, with stops for guided writing along the way. This is a great chance to brush off your writing skills and to celebrate the forest with your own prose or poetry. All ages welcome. The hike will stick primarily to the boardwalk. If weather doesn’t cooperate, an inside walk-and-write activity will be held.

Family Sundays in the Forest: Down in Childs Hollow Take an exploratory hike with the whole family down to one of Fontenelle’s most peaceful areas: Childs Hollow. This hike will take us uphill, downhill, and along a beautiful stream, and will move at a relaxed pace. Bring a camera or your binoculars... who knows what you’ll see!

Conservation Hike: Oak Savannas Join us for a walk highlighting the oak savanna, one of the Midwest’s most endangered ecosystems. Learn why oak savannas are so valuable and how our Land Stewardship department fights to protect our own oak savannas here at Fontenelle Forest.

Family Sundays in the Forest: Dipping in the Wetlands Join us at the Wetlands Learning Center to learn which macroinvertebrates can be found in the pond. Using nets and strainers we will discover the amazing world that thrives in the water. Dragonfly larva, water beetles and snails, oh my! This hands-on afternoon will give you a whole new perspective on what’s in the water!

Volunteer 101 and Teacher Naturalist 101 Have you recently started volunteering at Fontenelle Forest? You are invited to attend Volunteer 101. This is a great opportunity to get to know other volunteers, learn about our mission and rich history as well enjoying the trails of the Forest. Do you love the outdoors? Are you interested in helping others connect with nature? Become a Teacher Naturalist! Teacher Naturalists are volunteers who run weekend programs for the public, attend fascinating lectures and programs by experts on field biology and other natural history topics, and contribute to special programs that the Forest offers year-round.

Family Sundays in the Forest: Migrating Monarchs Monarch butterflies migrate through Nebraska every year! Stop by and learn how we can help these migrating miracles from Chris Robie, an educator who has tagged them and visited them in their winter home in Mexico. Children can fly their own colored male or female monarch on a simulated journey from Nebraska to Mexico and discover the perils as well as safe havens along the way.

Expeditionary Walk When a fifth Saturday occurs in a month, a group will take a short walk along Stream Trail to view and record seasonal changes. Bring a camera! Each 5th Saturday, we’ll note plant and animal activity (especially the beavers). Please dress for the weather.
