Ceramics in the twenty-first century occupies a broad territory. Underpinning much contemporary practice is a renewed appreciation of and commitment to the material, with its own particular histories, associations, and qualities. This enthusiasm for the stuff itself, and more particularly what has been done with it in the past, has done nothing to limit the exploration of new forms and approaches. Ceramic artists have increasingly demonstrated a desire to cross â&#x20AC;&#x201D; or perhaps more accurately have shown a healthy disregard for â&#x20AC;&#x201D; the boundaries of their discipline. There is tangible enthusiasm for the absorption of ideas from other branches of the visual arts, from science or archaeology or museology. Ceramics today might also be performance art, installation art, public sculpture or an exercise in curating. It might incorporate other materials, or share ground with other progressive craft disciplines. Edmund de Waal has been a leading figure in this expanding30pt field of possibilities, both as an artist and as an observer and critic. During his career, de Waal has moved from domestic potter to installation artist.
