1. Insect-based beverages Crickets, ants, and other bugs are nutritious and sustainable sources of protein. For this reason, insects are an unexpected ingredient that has begun to make more regular appearances on restaurant menus. And now beverage companies are jumping on the bug bandwagon, finding ways to sneak in this healthy addition to their booze.

Bitters are a particularly popular realm for experimentation among bold and innovative bartenders. And as it turns out, they also act as a great blending agent for distilled insects. These bug-based bitters are designed to mix perfectly with bourbon, rum, or any other strong alcohol. Consumers are more open to trying insect drinks because they can’t see the bugs and recognize the benefits. 2. Botanicals are blooming The desire for more sophisticated and earthy flavors is growing in the beverage industry. Citrus has been in the limelight for quite some time, but in 2022 the array of botanical-based drinks will continue to expand and evolve. Palate profiles are likely to include delicate florals such as elderflower, hibiscus, and lavender. These lighter, ethereal flavors are being joined by the likes of more rustic herbs such as rosemary, anise, and even turmeric. Without a doubt, botanicals are turning a new leaf as they continue to become more mainstream in the beverage industry.

3. The mocktail is making moves Health and wellness continue to be top of mind as we forge ahead in 2022. As people are becoming more conscientious regarding lifestyle choices, consumption of alcohol in moderation is becoming more mainstream. The demand for non-alcoholic spirits is on the rise, and some surprisingly delicious, booze-free concoctions are being created as a result. Herbal extracts, spices, roots, barks, and juices elevate the mocktail world, pleasing the palate with sophisticated flavors while removing hangovers from the equation. There is also plenty of exploration taking place in the art of infusion. CBD, or cannabidiol, is a particularly popular choice as it is known to have mood-altering effects that replace getting tipsy with feeling energized or relaxed. These types of drinks may be super chill, and the trend is showing no signs of slowing down.

4. Hard cider is easy to love In the RTD (Ready To Drink) beverage category, many experts foresee a spike in craft apple and pear ciders. Hard seltzer had its fair share of fame — now it’s hard cider’s turn to get all the glory. There is a newly discovered appreciation for the cider’s authenticity and the fact that it is in its own category. Technically a wine made from orchard fruits, hard cider offers unique tastes and health benefits. A source of antioxidants and vitamin C, this gluten-free beverage is accessible and a highly anticipated frontrunner for beloved beverages of 2022.

5. Have more fun with flavor The flavor is all the rage when it comes to alcohol, and people are filling their glasses with more adventurous combinations. Food and beverage brands have begun collaborating to create one-of-akind products that will entice consumers’ curiosity. Wines introduced are flavored like Oreos, Dijon mustard, and even Arby’s curly fries. It looks like 2022 is going to take people’s palates on an adventure.

The possibilities for creating new, satisfying beverages (booze-filled and alcohol-free) are limitless. Cheers to the anticipation of what’s to come and having the chance to savor the product and the experience with friends and family this year.
