DRINK GUIDE

Bristol is full of people that arrived to the city as fresh-faced freshers and either couldn’t bear to leave or eventually gravitated back to the South West; as cities go, it has a pretty big pull. The music scene is thriving and totally diverse – you can easily hear live music every day of the week. It’s a city that values the arts, with great galleries, museums and independent cinemas, not to mention the street art that has put us on the world map – thanks Banksy! Bristol is in a beautiful part of the country, surrounded by lush countryside, and the city itself is full of green spaces. When the sun is shining, Bristol hosts picnics and barbecues galore in its parks and on the harbourside. Even when the weather is slightly more British, Bristol is a great place for food and drink. The scene is constantly changing and evolving, so there’s always somewhere new to check out. This guide will welcome you to the great city of Bristol, with our top picks for student deals, a guide to the city’s hottest areas and lots more. Read on and enjoy.

A GUIDE TO...

• THE CITY • CENTRE Where is Bristol’s centre?

It’s a common question and one without a definitive answer. If you’re asking for directions, you’ll be pointed ‘towards the fountains.’ We’ve defined it as the area spanning Welsh Back and Corn Street towards the Hippodrome and the shopping quarter. It’s where you’ll find floating bars, independent cinema Watershed, coffee shops galore and retail heaven in Cabot Circus.

Top Picks...… THE APPLE

2

Bobbing along at Welsh Back is The Apple, where cider dreams come true. The Apple is the go-to bar for anyone seriously into real cider – we’re talking the good South West stuff, made with nothing but apples. This floating Dutch barge creaks under the weight of 4O different ciders, including their own super-strong Old Bristolian. 21 Arnolfini Café …

Creative block? Take a wander around Arnolfini to re-inspire you, before settling into the café with a freshly brewed cuppa and a piece of cake. If the sun is shining, grab yourself a cold beer and relax, legs swinging over the side of harbour – this is a must-do weekend pastime for any true Bristolian.

Aquila 22

Lip-smacking modern Italian food is on offer in this great glass-fronted restaurant. Located on Baldwin Street, Aquila really is in the thick of it, close to a bevy of bars and clubs. It’s our top pick for group bookings and offers vegetarian and vegan menus, so it’s great for birthday get-togethers before you hit the town.

• Hit the Decks THEKLA, THE 80FT, 650-TONNE BRISTOL INSTITUTION, CAN BE FOUND NEXT DOOR TO THE MUD DOCK.

After years of transporting timber around the globe, a weary and worn-out vessel arrived in Bristol’s harbour and was transformed into one of the city’s most beloved arts hubs. Thekla’s life as a working ship is now a distant memory; now it’s happily retired in order to party. Thekla is known for its music offering, thanks to an impressive line-up of live musicians, resident DJs and club nights. From house music to indie nights and acoustic sessions, the programme caters to many tastes. When the weather complies, gather on the deck with friends to soak up the buzzing atmosphere, drink in hand. Alternatively, head below deck to the hull for a live gig and experience some of the best acoustics Bristol has to offer. A capacity of 6OO means you’ll always find Thekla bustling with patrons – why not join the droves and have a great evening of your own at this floating night spot?

• SEVERNSHED

Perched on the edge of The Grove and overlooking the river is Severnshed. Once a private boathouse for Isambard Kingdom Brunel, the venue is now a stylish restaurant and bar, with a lovely waterside terrace that is the perfect place to recline and laze away an afternoon while enjoying a refreshing tipple in the sun. The offering is extensive and includes breakfast, brunch and an all-day à la carte menu, complemented by a great drinks selection. This includes a range of 2-for-1 cocktails, which are served all day, every day. Why not pop by in the morning and tuck into American pancakes topped with grilled bacon and maple syrup, or perhaps a traditional full English? If you’re visiting at the weekend, opt for something from the brunch menu. Options like eggs Royale and the posh fish finger sandwich are served until 4pm, and can be paired with a Mimosa or perhaps a spicy Bloody Mary. For a hearty meal, look to the à la carte. The Mediterranean vegetable and mozzarella Wellington is popular with vegetarians, while burger-fans delight in the Santa Fe burger, which is enhanced by chorizo, avocado and Swiss cheese. Sounding delicious? Sounds even better when you know that students get a whopping 25-per-cent discount on the à la carte menu. It’s not just lip-smacking food and impressive cocktails. Friday nights at Severnshed should be on your list of ways to kick off the weekend, as the DJ transforms this eatery into a waterside venue that will see you into the early hours of the morning.

• Bristol’s veggie ho When it comes to vegetarian and vegan nosh, Bristol pulls out all the stops.…

Yurt Lush

29

Temple Meads, BS1 6QH Have you visited Bristol’s own Mongolian yurt? Located right next to Temple Meads station, Yurt Lush is a pretty haven, worth sticking your nose in if you’re heading into or out of Bristol. If you’ve attended Eat Drink Bristol Fashion and loved it, then you’ll fall head over heels for the Yurt, as the same guys run it. Yurt Lush’s menus are created by head chef Oscar Davis and Josh Eggleton (chef patron of the Michelin-starred Pony & Trap) and always offer fresh, vegetarian dishes. Their spiced chickpea burger is renowned as one of the best around and there’s a great salad bar to get stuck into at lunchtime. Brunch sees a host of veggie delights, like seasonal greens, field mushrooms and poached eggs on toast, and Boston beans with smashed avocado on sourdough. You could also go whole hog with the full veggie English.

20 Student Food & Drink Guide

Pepenero 13

13

King Street BS1 4EF Stokes Croft, BS1 3PR Pepenero caters seamlessly for every dietary requirement you can think of, simply so we can all enjoy delicious pizza. Gluten-free? No problem. Vegan? Not an issue. In fact, most Bristolian veggies and vegans will direct you to Pepenero if you’re after somewhere with an almost excessive amount of choice. They have a whole menu of vegan pizzas, including the amazing Vegan Fest that comprises mozzarella-style cheese, tomato, aubergine, courgette, pepper, rashers, cheatin’ ham, onion and olives. The vegetarian menu is separate to the vegan menu, so there’s even more choice. These guys do cater for meat-eaters too, so it’s a great all-round eatery, and one where you can also order pudding. If you have a sweet-tooth, you absolutely have to try the Nutella pizza. Order your pizza to be delivered, or head down to The Beer Emporium on King Street or the Full Moon Bar in Stokes Croft to enjoy your wood-fired pizza with a beer.

otspots Mud Dock Café

31

The Grove, BS1 4RB The Mud Dock Café is an iconic Bristol establishment, servicing both our bicycles and our hankering for great food and drink, simultaneously. Walk up the spiral metal staircases to a laid-back café restaurant (complete with cycling paraphernalia hanging from the rafters) and an outdoor terrace. While catering for all tastes, Mud Dock always has stand-out veggie dishes on offer. Their halloumi burger with Portobello mushrooms and chutney is lip-smackingly good. There’s also a popular Mexican bean burger. The Mud Dock predominantly features regularly changing specials, displayed on chalkboards around the restaurant; you’ll always find veggie options to tickle your fancy. Mud Dock also offers daily deals – just keep your beady eyes on their website for the latest. With twinkling lights, candlelit tables and one of the best views in Bristol, Mud Dock is the perfect spot for an intimate meal for two.

The Better Food Company 30

30

Wapping Wharf, BS1 6WE – Whiteladies Road, BS8 2QX – St Werburghs, BS2 9LB Anyone who hasn’t sampled The Better Food Company’s avocado guacamole on toast needs to head down there immediately. We have three in Bristol to choose from, all with their own unique charm, yet the same health-conscious ethos. The Better Food Company is all about sustainable, local and organic produce and is just the place to go to stock up on your veggies. The cafés are fantastic for scrumptious, wholesome breakfasts and lunches. There are always plenty of freshly made sandwiches, salads and snacks to take away, but you’ll soon find yourself tempted to settle down with a coffee and lunch, or a mid-morning snack. At the Wapping Wharf café there are vegan sharing boards, veggie full English breakfasts and loads of tasty flavours of hummus. There are plenty of power points and USB chargers so you can bring your laptop and get some work done. The Better Food Company is an institution on Whiteladies Road and, as well as being a mecca for those who love their vegetables, they always have something gluten-free on offer. The St Werburghs branch is the original flagship store – you’ll really feel like part of the fabric of Bristol.

Student Food & Drink Guide

21

A capella 46

Wells Road, BS4 2AL A capella cooks up stone-baked pizza to a musical note, and offers a menu specifically for vegetarians. The Vivaldi, for example, is a cheesy beauty of mozzarella, Gorgonzola, Brie and provelone with oregano and red onion. Adagio will soothe with a fresh medley of goat’s cheese, olives, fresh cherry and sundried tomatoes, spring onions and a final flourish of rocket, while the C Minor is perfect for those with an appetite – this hearty calzone comes stuffed with ricotta, mozzarella, spinach, red and yellow peppers, and is finished with a drizzle of rosemary oil, oregano and fresh basil. The restaurant itself is intimate and always buzzing, as it’s a popular place – it’s well worth making the trip to Totterdown for.

Ironworks Supply Co.

10

Broad Street, BS1 2EP Music, motorbikes and Margaritas – the Ironworks Supply Co. is just so very Bristol. The Ironworks is known for their cocktails, coffee and live music, and their veggie offering is similarly rocking. Breakfasts, open toast and bagels are in abundance and portions are generous; head down for brunch and some of the best coffee in Bristol. For veggies and vegans, there’s plenty on offer throughout the day. Try the smashed avocado with marinated feta on toast, and we suggest adding a poached egg – it’s dreamy. Or tuck into a breakfast burrito made with your own choice of fillings. Pizzas at the Ironworks are thin, crispy and the Vegan’s Vengeance is heaven – sourdough base covered in spicy ratatouille and topped with mushrooms, pine nuts, crispy kale, parsnip crisps and cumin hummus. There’s even a veggie kebab on the menu.

Tuk Tuck

“a veggie treat right in the heart of the city “ 22 Student Food & Drink Guide

17

St stephen’s Street, BS1 1EE As cute as the little three-wheeled Thai open taxis that this eatery is named after, Tuk Tuck is a veggie treat right in the heart of the city. The emphasis here is on Asian street food and you’ll find vegan- and veggie-friendly options, such as veg dumplings, known as gyoza, tofu katsu curry and jam-packed vegan bibimbaps, complete with homemade gochujang Korean chilli sauce. What’s more, Tuk Tuck is pocket-friendly; you won’t find much for over £7. Feeling peckish on the way home? Veggie dirty fries will hit the spot – crispy fries topped with carrot, mooli pickle, grilled mushrooms and fried tofu pieces with chipotle mayo and spring onions.

BOSCO PIZZERIA The story... When Bosco was set up it was with the intention that everything was to be made in-house, right down to the pizza dough. The team spent time testing out different recipes, and the results are utterly mouthwatering. Handmade dough is left to prove for 48 hours before being hand-stretched to order and then cooked in the wood-burning oven for just two minutes at a whopping 400 degrees. This process gives a deliciously light base with a puffy and ever-so-slightly blistered crust.

• special occasionS Maybe you’re looking for somewhere swanky to celebrate your birthday or to treat your date to a memorable meal. Whatever the special event, it’s time to dig out the iron and dress your best for a truly exceptional meal out.

Brasserie Blanc

The Clifton Sausage

For a taste of French chic in the city centre, head to Brasserie Blanc. Situated on the edge of Cabot Circus, it’s the perfect destination before or after a spot of shopping. The first-floor gallery offers intimate tables with fantastic views across the restaurant, and as for the food, it’s spot-on. Dishes range from French classics such as fish soup and steak frites to more modern options like seared king scallops and wild mushroom ravioli. If you’re bringing a date, it’s worth bearing in mind that the prix-fixe menu is only £11.95 for two courses from noon to 6.3Opm Monday to Saturday.

Tucked discreetly down a little side street, The Clifton Sausage is something of an institution. If you love proper sausages in an upmarket setting, then this is the place for you – and to make choosing easy, there’s a great tasting plate featuring four of their finest. Not only do they serve excellent sausages, they also offer a range of classic British dishes such as braised lamb shepherd’s pie and sticky toffee pudding. The Sunday lunch is spectacular and comes with all the trimmings, including superb Yorkshire puds.

The Glassboat

River Cottage Canteen

Welsh Back, BS1 4SB

Few venues offer such stunning views of the Floating Harbour as The Glassboat. A fine dining restaurant located right on the water, it’s the perfect place to show off your foodie credentials and Bristol’s maritime heritage. The classic French menu includes refined yet unfussy dishes such as snails in garlic butter, sole meunière with kale and sautéed potatoes, and some of the best steaks in Bristol. Just round the corner from King Street, it’s also the ideal venue for an early evening meal before a show at the Bristol Old Vic.

Hotel du Vin Bistro

Narrow Lewins Mead, BS1 2NU

40

Discreetly set back off the main road behind Broadmead in a beautiful 18th-century building, Hotel du Vin is well worth seeking out. The attentive staff will make you feel like celebrities, and the whole place exudes an undeniable air of calm, luxury and sophistication. The à la carte menu features French-inspired dishes made from hearty British ingredients, the afternoon tea comes with a medley of French and British cakes and savouries – not forgetting the option of gin or Champagne – and they also do a lavish Sunday lunch.

39 St John’s Court, Whiteladies Road, BS8 2QY

If you’re based in the Clifton area and are familiar with one of Bristol’s famous hills leading up Whiteladies Road, chances are you’ll have passed River Cottage Canteen. This contemporary renovation of a Grade II listed church makes a unique setting for a special meal – and the food is excellent too. The ingredients are seasonal, organic and locally sourced, with some even foraged from the wild, before being combined into fresh, healthy and trendy main dishes and smaller plates. They also do a feel-good Saturday breakfast and brunch that features the likes of spelt muesli with fresh pear and stewed rhubarb, and green veg hash served with a Chestnut Farm egg.

A GUIDE TO...

• PARK STREET • and the • Clifton Triangle You may have found that Park Street and the Clifton Triangle are student ground zero. Many of the University of Bristol’s main student facilities are concentrated around here so you’ll come to know these two popular areas like the back of your hand. Thanks to the plethora of shops, restaurants and bars, there’s plenty of opportunity to spend your student loan here – be it on vintage clothes in one of the many charity shops, grabbing coffee or lunch during a study break, or late at night in one of the bars or clubs.

TOP PICKS... Grillstock 41

You may have heard of meaty food fest, Grillstock – a barbecue and music food festival that is on every self-respecting carnivore’s calendar. The smokehouse on Clifton Triangle is Grillstock’s first permanent residence and serves up some of the best burgers in the city – authentic, unhurried wood-smoked meat, served to the soundtrack of the Delta blues. Got a competitive streak? See if you can tackle the Grand Champion plate.
