Viva Carnival!! As the slogan flows in the air marking the beginning of the festivities in Goa, the state is proud that it's the only place where Carnival takes place in India. Carnival is not just a festival: it is also an activity to boost tourism in the state and hence the Tourism Department spends a lot of money on promoting this event. Some might say that this has led to the Carnival losing its charm somewhat, due to a high level of commercialisation, but that does not affect business as the money keeps flowing in from advertisers and spectators. Carnival is not the only event that pulls tourists into the state, but it does mark the beginning of other festivals including the Food & Cultural Festival.
