Yellowstone’s 150th anniversary BY MEGAN HILL

As America’s first national park, Yellowstone set in motion a national pastime of exploring protected, wild spaces. Today, there are 423 national park sites in the country, a legacy that began with a signature by President Ulysses S. Grant on March 1, 1872.

T

oday, Yellowstone remains one of the jewels of the national park Service. The vast space, which covers nearly 3,500 square miles in Wyoming and Montana, is home to an array of geysers, hot springs, river canyons, mountains, and wildlife aplenty. Some 3 million people come here to drive its roads, explore its trails, and take in the scenery. With record floods that temporarily closed the park this spring, Yellowstone has seen plenty of ups and downs. In the early 1900s, the government nearly eradicated predators in the park, and the region’s famous bison were hunted almost to elimination. In 1988, huge fires burned a third of the park. The introduction of nonnative trout nearly

wiped out native cutthroat populations. Now, Yellowstone tells a different stor y—one of resilience and conservation. The park’s bison have rebounded, and are a common sight for visitors. And the predators are back: grizzly bears and gray wolves are also residents of Yellowstone. And Yellowstone continues to improve. The park has set a range of priorities to keep the park in good shape for the coming years, both for employees and visitors. These goals include improving employee housing, strengthening the ecosystem and heritage resources, investing in infrastructure, and creating a worldclass visitor experience. As the results of those projects take shape, visitors today have access to tried-and-true favorite spots throughout the park: geysers like Old Faithful, thermal pools like Grand Prismatic Hot Spring, the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, and plenty more geological wonders. A n d t h e re are s om e s p e c i a l anniversar y events taking place throughout the year, both online and in person, though visitors should check the park’s website for the latest details given the recent closure. - Virtual Video Series: Running until August, the online series covers a

range of discussion topics, including tribal connections and recent wildlife discoveries. Videos live on the park’s social media and YouTube channels after the presentations are over. - Yellowstone Tribal Heritage Center: This pilot project will host a Native American exhibition at the Haynes Photo Shop at Old Faithful through September. With this, Native American artists, scholars, and presenters can directly engage Yellowstone visitors through formal and informal education. - Teepee Village: Open from July through August near the Roosevelt Arch at the North Entrance to the park. Event partners include Mountain Time Arts, Greater Yellowstone Coalition, National Parks Conservation Association, Park County Environmental Council, and Yellowstone Forever.

Red Lodge BY MEGAN HILL

Situated in south-central Montana, Red Lodge is an unknown gem waiting to be uncovered. The small town packs a big punch when it comes to amenities, shopping, events, restaurants, and more. All these aspects combine to give it a personality worthy of a big city. The area around Red Lodge was once home to the Crow Indians, who stayed in the area each summer to worship, rest, and hunt. The permanent town as it’s known today was established in 1884. The Rocky Fork Coal Company opened the area’s first mine nearby in 1887, drawing scores of European immigrants to work in the mine. That brought on a boom for Red Lodge—downtown became a lively collection of 20 saloons. The Great Depression ended much of the mining activity here, but local entrepreneurs turned to another lucrative industry—bootleg liquor. Sold as “cough syrup,” the town’s major export kept “patients” happy from the Midwest to California. Tourism and recreation also rose to prominence, and by the mid-20th century, those industries, along with ranching, replaced coal mining as the major sources of income. Today, with a population of just over 2,000 people, Red Lodge has a great community feel. You won’t find big box stores and chains 22

in this town at the edge of the Beartooth Mountains. Instead, visitors will find world-class outdoor recreation, a slew of small businesses, and a historic downtown loaded with genuine warmth and hospitality. Downtown is extremely walkable and safe. The quaint collection of buildings holds independently owned shops, restaurants, and saloons—making it the quintessential western town. The outdoors is the main draw here. Red Lodge is surrounded by a million acres of outdoor recreation areas. In winter, Red Lodge Mountain delivers plenty of powder without the crowds or long lift lines. The ski area usually opens around Thanksgiving each year and runs through mid-April. In summer, the Beartooth Highway leading to Yellowstone National Park is the main draw. It’s often rated as one of the most scenic drives in the country, and is especially attractive for motorcyclists. But there are plenty of other activities nearby: climbing, fishing, camping, hunting, rafting, biking, and horseback riding are all just a few steps from town. Red Lodge is often looked at as a pass-through for visitors heading to Yellowstone. But the enchanting town tends to romance all who come through. And they end up wanting to stay. Food & Travel

Red Lodge

Red Lodge is a hub of outdoor activity, thanks to its setting near the Beartooth and Absaroka Mountains, and Yellowstone National Park. While Yellowstone is often the major reason travelers head to Red Lodge, there are plenty of reasons to linger here. Among some of the top attractions in and around town is the Beartooth Highway. This spectacular road is one of the most scenic drives in the United States. It travels 68 miles from Red Lodge to Yellowstone, reaching 11,000 feet at Beartooth Pass. Along the way, views of mountains, alpine lakes, and valleys are sure to impress. Red Lodge Mountain ski resort is another top attraction. It’s an unpretentious spot to hit the slopes in winter, or hit a round of golf in summer. At the Yellowstone Wildlife Sanctuary, visitors can spot animals native to the area. animals that are sick or injured. Wildlife here includes bison, bears, and mountain lions, and the grounds are beautiful. Situated in a 1909 red brick building in town, the Carbon County Historical Society & Museum shouldn’t be overlooked. Here, visitors can view historical artifacts and photos of the area. The museum also offers a Historic Red Lodge Walking Tour. At the Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery, set inside the town’s former train depot, visitors can walk through for free and view monthly rotating art exhibitions, many of which revolve around works from local artists that draw inspiration from the town’s scenery. And there’s plenty to eat and drink in town. Walking down the main drag of Broadway Avenue, you’ll find a hefty collection of saloons, restaurants, and shops. Browse clothing and outdoor stores, art galleries, and gift shops between stops at watering holes and restaurants. Food & Travel

It may not have the prestige of its northern neighbors, Napa and Sonoma Valleys, but don’t overlook Santa Barbara’s excellent winery collection. This diverse selection of experiences means that it’s easy to wrap wine tastings into a trip to the region, or even base your entire visit around wine. The area’s unique geography makes it one of the best wine-tasting destinations out there. There are a staggering seven American Viticultural Areas here, thanks to a wide-ranging terrain that produces microclimates and lends itself to growing many different types of grapes. With more than 275 wineries to choose from, and 70 different grape varieties, there are many options for wine tastings here. Some 60 wineries are dog- and family-friendly, so it’s possible to bring the whole family along for the adventure. Visitors can choose from among 9 wine trails: 32

BIOLITE’S NEW FIREPIT+ PORTABLE GRILL AND FIRE PIT

B

ioLite is becoming a go-to company for outfitting backyard bonfires. The company’s newest product, the FirePit+, is a great option as a centerpiece for cooler nights spent outdoors. These firepits have a lot going for them. For starters, they’re lightweight, coming in at just under 20 pounds. That means you can move them easily, whether you’re planning to keep the firepit at home or take it

Food & Travel Summer 2022 Food & Travel Summer 2022

By: Megan Hill on the road. It’s easy to hoist into the trunk of your car and take on your next camping trip or to the beach. The pit’s legs also fold, so the device compacts and becomes even more portable. These pits are designed to be almost entirely smokeless, so you won’t be stuck doing the smoke-avoidance dance at your next bonfire. Even without the smoke, the pits still help keep mosquitoes and other insects away from your gathering. The FirePit+ comes with a grill grate attachment for the top of the pit, so it doubles as a portable hibachi grill. Toss some skewers or hot dogs on top for an easy outdoor cooktop. The pit burns both firewood and charcoal, so you can pick your fuel based on the activity. The device’s mesh surround is also unique—it lets in plenty of air to keep the fire going, and creates a captivating visual of the fire inside the pit. In addition, the FirePit+ is built with 51

airjets, designed to add oxygen to the fire and help it build and maintain. One of the coolest features of the FirePit+ is the ability to control the size of the flame via the device’s free app, which connects your phone to the firepit through Bluetooth. Using this is optional—users always have the ability to control the flames manually—but once set up, it allows you to make adjustments without leaving the comfort of your camp chair. With this newest release, BioLite has made a slew of upgrades, including adjusting the design to better distribute and radiate heat outward. This new product also has a high-temperature enamel coating that’s designed to last longer than past versions, and an upgraded battery for longer burn times. Overall, this is an exciting addition to BioLite’s impressive product lineup, and one that will surely be at the center of many a backyard memory.

Travel Gear:

Daybreaker Pack from Able Carry There are certainly a ton of backpacks on the market, but one newer option— and a standout—is the Daybreaker pack from Able Carry.

T

By: meGan Hill

his sleek, modern pack has a surprising number of features for its streamlined design. The pack has 25 liters of capacity, the perfect size for day-long wanderings through both urban and wilderness settings. That’s plenty of space for a couple of layers of clothing, lunch and snacks, laptop or tablet, your guidebook, phone, and more. The Daybreaker has a few handy pockets to help keep things organized, but doesn’t overreach when it comes to compartments. There’s the larger, main compartment, plus a smaller pocket inside the top opening that’s perfect for your keys, wallet, and phone. On the outside, the pack comes with an adjustable sleeve for a water bottle or coffee mug, and a smaller, zippered side pocket with a clip for hanging personal items like keys. Even with all of these features, the pack maintains a slim, stylish look that helps it fit in in an urban environment.

The pack’s light weight helps keep overall pack weight down. But Able Carry didn’t skimp on durability: the Daybreaker is made with rugged materials, like tear- and scuff-resistant Cordura fabric. It’s also made with water resistant materials, so while it may not stay dry if you dunk the entire thing in a river, it’ll keep the rain off your gear.

And if for some reason the pack doesn’t live up to expectations, Able Carry has you covered. The company offers a 14-day trial period for its products, saying they’ll take them back if they’re not a good fit for the customer. And all bags carry a lifetime guarantee against workmanship defects; if the customer has product issues, the company will help sort them out.
