02 FHCP 202 1 CEO & EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

A MESSAGE FROM OUR CEO

Our industry has continued to serve Canadians throughout the pandemic despite the challenges faced, and it is this spirit of perseverance and innovation that enables us to overcome obstacles and not just survive, but thrive.

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO JOINED US FOR FHCP’S 2021 CEO & EXECUTIVE LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE! Despite hosting it virtually for a second year, we had many inspiring and thoughtful discussions resulting in meaningful connections for all attendees. This year’s CEO event was highlighted by innovative Power Sessions designed to educate and inspire with thoughtprovoking speakers and Q+As. The “Survive and Thrive” theme reflected our pandemic mood perfectly, where it’s not just about surviving, but learning to thrive in this new normal. This event truly offered leaders the chance to gain valuable industry and economic insights, understand the importance of diverse work environments, and network among their peers. Our industry has continued to serve Canadians

throughout the pandemic despite the challenges faced, and it is this spirit of perseverance and innovation that enables us to overcome obstacles and not just survive, but thrive. Our keynote speakers provided valuable insights on topics including innovation, leadership, economic recovery and current industry trends and changes. Speakers also challenged us to lead with empathy and continue to promote diversity in our workplaces. This is the time to invest in trends such as adding personality to brands and products, attracting hyperaware consumers, and targeting more specific demographics with personalization. On behalf of the entire FHCP team, I hope that you enjoyed your time with us this year. We look forward to the year ahead

and a return to in-person sessions in 2022, including FHCP’s well-known Sales and Marketing Symposium, Supply Chain Symposium, Charity Golf Tournament, and, of course, the 2022 CEO & Executive Leadership Conference! Wishing you continued success,

Michael Graydon, CEO Food, Health & Consumer Products of Canada

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

“THIS CONFERENCE ALWAYS PROVIDES SUCH RICH CONTENT. I LOOK FORWARD TO ATTENDING EACH YEAR.”

“ CONFIDENCE MUST OVERSHADOW FEAR AND DOUBT. FEAR CAN BE AN ACRONYM THAT STANDS FOR FACE EVERYTHING AND RISE.”

“THIS PANDEMIC RESET WILL BE FOLLOWED BY ECONOMIC DEVALUATION AND THEN ONCE-INA-GENERATION GROWTH. WHAT IS YOUR MOVE?”

NICK NURSE HEAD COACH TORONTO RAPTORS

LEONARD BRODY BUSINESS AND TECHNOLOGY VISIONARY CARAVAN

He is one of the world’s most innovative basketball coaches, and his 30-year career has spanned five countries. His expertise helped him lead the Toronto Raptors to the NBA championship in 2019. Coach Nurse gave us a glimpse into his winning mindset, explaining that innovation is the byproduct of an open mind and a willingness to admit you don’t always know as much as you think you do. Also important: don’t underestimate the value of teamwork, recognize the potential in individuals, and understand that defeat is unavoidable so preparing for it is as important as overcoming it.

History has taught us that major “resets” are not unique. Resets are definable, repetitive and predictable. From the Industrial Revolution to the COVID-19 pandemic, financial, war, technology and medical induced resets have reshaped everything we think we know. Resets are always followed by significant growth. The pandemic has had a major effect on buying and consumer behaviour. Leonard Brody described the growth of online shopping and increasing importance of brands having direct-toconsumer selling routes; the heightened awareness consumers have about what they buy; and the emphasis on brand personalization for specific demographics.

“THIS WAS THE BEST PRESENTATION I HAVE SEEN ON THIS TOPIC DUE TO THE STYLE OF PRESENTING. IT WAS FUN, LOTS OF ENERGY AND I LEARNED MORE TODAY THAN I HAVE IN OTHER SESSIONS OF THIS TYPE.”

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

“THE BRANDS THAT UNDERSTAND PEOPLE ALWAYS WIN. BE NON-OBVIOUS. THAT MEANS FINDING A WAY TO BE DIFFERENT AND DESIRED.”

“TO ACHIEVE DIVERSITY, WE NEED TO HAVE DIALOGUE TO SEE OTHER PERSPECTIVES. WE HAVE TO BE COMFORTABLE WITH BEING UNCOMFORTABLE.”

ROHIT BHARGAVA FUTURIST, INNOVATION AND MARKETING EXPERT, FOUNDER NON-OBVIOUS COMPANY

ANTHONY MCLEAN ACTOR AND MASTER STORYTELLER ON LEADERSHIP, MENTAL HEALTH AND INCLUSIVITY

Major changes are happening in our industry. Consumers are facing noise and choice overloads, or “infobesity,” which can lead to inability to choose a product and increased impatience. Consumers are also having a believability crisis wondering who and what they can trust. Additionally, there is constant disruption between brands that traditionally operate in one industry and move into new ones. Rohit Bhargava also described several new trends, like the importance of giving products and brands a more human touch by infusing personality, and leading with empathy to counter increasing automation.

Anthony McLean challenged us to think about diversity and how to achieve it. We need to know how different people see the world and leverage diverse thoughts and opinions to reach consumers. Diversity is good for business as it encourages new ideas and helps teams meet financial targets, be high performing, and be innovative and agile. Diversity also includes belonging. Everyone needs to feel they belong to feel safe and included. People make mistakes, though, and cancel culture shouldn’t be used to shame them; accountability should be used instead to turn mistakes into teachable moments.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

“BENJAMIN IS THE MAIN REASON I COME TO THIS EVENT — POWERFUL AND THOUGHTPROVOKING ALWAYS.” “ONE OF HIS BEST. THE IMPACT OF COVID-19 AND THE ECONOMIC CONDITIONS WAS OUTSTANDING.”

“THE ECONOMIC DAMAGE FROM THE PANDEMIC RESTRICTIONS HAS BEEN DEEP BUT NARROW INDUSTRY-WISE, THOUGH THE ECONOMY CAN AND WILL GROW THE SAME AS BEFORE.” BENJAMIN TAL DEPUTY CHIEF ECONOMIST CIBC WORLD MARKETS

As FHCP’s top-rated speaker for the past several years, Benjamin Tal returned to share his insights on the COVID-19 pandemic, inflation, and economic recovery. While it is impossible to predict where inflation will be in the future, we know it is currently driven largely by the industries hardest hit during the pandemic, such as hospitality and restaurants, and temporary supply chain bottlenecks that increased prices. The pandemic restrictions also accelerated trends like e-commerce, remote work and healthcare investment.

LEADERSHIP HUDDLE

“CONTENT WAS EXCELLENT COVERING THEMES THAT WERE PERTINENT, INTERESTING AND DELIVERED WELL BY THE SPEAKERS AND MODERATORS.” “EMPATHY IS THE NUMBER ONE MOST SOUGHT-AFTER LEADERSHIP ATTRIBUTE TODAY. SO HOW DO WE ACHIEVE IT?” Marnie Smith moderated this discussion focused on empathy in leadership and its effects on organizational operations. Mark Bowden noted it’s daunting to be an empathetic leader when managing a team, but cognitive versus emotional empathy is the answer. Alyse Gaulin said getting uncomfortable helps to build the awareness and courage needed to become better empathetic leaders. Justin Roethlingshoefer explained empathy is achieved by sharing our own capacity and energy with our team. Warren Sarafinchan detailed how overcoming his own challenges helped him become a more empathetic leader, noting leaders should not absorb organizational stress.
