A PERSONAL NOTE FROM
No “thing” lasts forever.
Chad DeMiguel — Senior Director of Development —
“W
hat do you want for Christmas?” You’re probably starting to ask that question a lot lately — of your spouse, kids, parents, grandparents, friends. Each with different interests, styles, and desires. And the results can often be the same: and somewhat predictable. So this year, with this catalog, I invite you to make your gift giving a little easier, and a LOT more meaningful! How? By asking only one person — Jesus Christ, whose birth we celebrate this time of year — “What do you want for Christmas?” Perhaps you’ll hear, “... let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Every gift you’ll find here has this request at the heart. Gifts that do good work and demonstrate His love and care in some of the hardest places on earth. These gifts are urgently needed. Especially this year, as the global pandemic has intensified the heartbreaking challenges of extreme poverty — hunger, lack of clean water, education, access to healthcare. This gift catalog is more important now than ever.
There’s a unique, meaningful gift for every person on your list: seeds for a gardener, COVID-19 Response Kits for a doctor or nurse, school supplies for a teacher. You can even customize a card to let loved ones know of the eternal impact you’ve made on their behalf. Even better: These gifts are not handouts. They’re tools used to equip selfsustainability and spark hope. With these gifts, you’ll walk with a family or community in need today ... so that soon, they can walk on their own. Then the community will graduate, and we’ll leave to go where we’re needed next. I can think of no better gift — to give or receive. I pray you’ll be inspired to play an important part in this special, unusual — and highly effective — process, by using your gift-giving to propel a community toward a brighter future and give glory to God. Thank you for making it possible. May God bless you with an unforgettable, joy-filled Christmas as you bless others this year.
This year, give gifts that
MATTER.

Let’s Go on an Adventure! Want to give the BEST GIFTS EVER!?!? Come on a journey with me, and I’ll show you how. Along the way, we’ll meet some of my friends from around the world who are hungry, thirsty, sick, or in need. We’ll learn about the blessings WE have. We've arrived at the first stop on our journey — The Barn! Animals are great sources of milk, eggs, meat — so much nutritious protein and calcium to help children grow big and strong. These furry critters can also provide materials for clothing — like wool. And animals can even help to grow fruits and veggies by producing manure (which stinks, but in a good way) AND by providing extra muscle to move plows and other equipment. Seriously. My barnyard pals do SO MUCH, you can’t pick wrong! 4

edard’s family was among the poorest in his Rwandan community. His small plot of land didn't produce enough to even feed his wife and daughters, never mind create an income. His precious girls — just 8 and 9 years old — were suffering worst of all. Empty stomachs, constantly sick with malnourishment and poor hygiene, and falling behind in school. They were stuck in the cycle of extreme poverty with no way out ... ... until you brought FH into his neighborhood. Medard was able to join an FH savings group and take out a loan to buy 150 chickens, and received training to raise them successfully. It wasn't long before he bred and sold 142 chickens for DOUBLE the money. After paying off the loan, he used the remainder to buy some land ... and then some pigs. He even used the pig manure to dramatically improve the output of his crops! No more hunger, no more suffering. Now, Medard and his family are in a new spiral — up and out of poverty!
Chickens don't cost much, but in Medard’s story you can see what a BIG difference they make. Just imagine what your gift will do — the spiral of change you can help create!
“My children now are healthy,” Medard says. “Their hygiene is better, they attend school regularly and perform well in class. All this because of FH.”

We all may recall our parents reminding us to eat our vegetables. As adults, we realized how important that was. Families in poverty also need something nutritious to eat — like the eggplant, cabbages, tomatoes, onions, green peppers, Swiss chard, beets, and more that your seeds will grow to become.
A keyhole garden is built to use the space around a family home, which means that they can grow vegetables without owning a large plot of land. Your gift will help a family to grow all kinds of nutritious veggies and other crops right in their own backyard — allowing for a balanced diet and reduced food insecurity.

arie and her family already struggled to produce enough food to eat. And then came COVID-19. Like so many in her Haitian community — a place where food insecurity is common — “We were stuck,” says Marie. “There was nothing we could do. We could not go about our work, and it was difficult to find food to support our family.” They couldn’t find anything to eat for over a week at one point during the pandemic. They made tea from boiled herbs to survive! Thank God you sent FH to help. Not only did your generosity provide food, health kits, face masks, and other aid to help them get through the pandemic ... but you also provided different kinds of seeds to the farmers to ensure the sustainability of their gardens. Now, despite the pandemic, Marie and her family have nutritious food they can count on and greater hope for the future than they’ve ever had before!

We don’t have to go far to reach our next destination: The Farm! Fruits and veggies are great sources of essential vitamins and minerals. They help kids grow up big, strong, and healthy. And kids are way less likely to miss school because of illness, meaning the future looks so much brighter. Farms are also one of the main ways families in impoverished communities earn money. With training and tools to plant crops more effectively, they’ll produce more ... eat more ... sell more. 8

aybe you put “stuff” in your water. Ice cubes, or a lemon wedge for flavor. But Amsal and his family are happy to drink theirs plain. In fact, they thank God that there’s no “stuff” in their water anymore. For too long, the only water they had to drink was full of ... Leaves — blown into the river, probably turning moldy, gunky, disgusting. Junk — random materials that made their way to the shore. Waste — from the animals who bathed in and used the river as a bathroom. And that’s just the “stuff” you could identify with the naked eye. Had you placed the water under a microscope, you would have found even scarier “stuff” — bacteria, parasites, and disease. This water made Amsal and his wife and four kids sick almost constantly. “There was much family illnesses, especially among the children, suffering from waterborne diseases such as diarrhea,” he remembers. Making matters worse, they had to trek a far distance from their Ethiopian community and wait for hours to fill their jugs from the low-flowing river. Often just making the journey and enduring the long line left his kids so tired — and so late for class — that they had to miss even more school!
But then everything changed … You and FH worked together in Amsal’s community to construct a clean water access point! The miles-long journey to the river? The long wait in line? The “stuff” in the water making the family sick? No more. Amsal and his kids simply go to the access point in town — where there’s an abundance of water, so the lines are short and quick moving. There’s plenty to drink, to wash hands, to clean their home.
And it’s JUST PLAIN WATER. Clean. Pure. Nothing in it to make them sick. Thank you for giving this simple yet life-changing gift. Amsal and his family are happy and healthy — on the road to breaking free of poverty alongside their community — and it couldn’t have happened without a gift like yours! 866-307-3259

Next, our journey brings us to a place of refreshment and renewal: The Well.
Worth?
Women in developing countries walk about six miles a day (and sometimes even more) to get water. A five-minute shower uses more water than the average person in a developing country uses for an entire day. Diarrhea, a result of waterborne disease, is the second-leading cause of death for children under age five.
WATER you waiting for? Giv ing water saves lives!
Water is SOOOOO important. Sadly, too many of my friends around the world have to walk miles and miles to get even one 5-gallon jug full. f the 600 people in Harun’s community, in a remote part of Myanmar, only six survived. Armed men came, targeting the ethnic Rohingya minority his family is a part of. He and his family scrambled to find safety, but they got caught and beaten. At only 8 years old, he was lined up alongside his family and friends as the assailants began beheading each person in turn. “I was so afraid,” he remembers. “I was thinking, ‘Soon, I will be dead.’” But for some unknown reason, the executioner stopped just before Harun’s family. Despite being spared that horror, he was not out of danger. The dirty, cramped refugee camp in Bangladesh they went to was full of disease. Common illnesses, like diarrhea and pneumonia, quickly jumped from person to person ... and could kill, if not treated.
“Soon, I will be dead”
Thanks to you, a trained medical worker was there at the camp. She diagnosed his chest infection ... treated him with life-saving medicine ... and within a few days, Harun was healthy again! After such a great experience, his parents even brought him back when the cough returned — revealing Harun has severe asthma. Now, the nurses all know him by name and always have his breathing medicine stocked should he need it to help ease his symptoms. Today, he’s happy and healthy. His dream? To become a doctor, like the ones you sent to save his life.
“I love going to school,” Harun says. “I am learning Burmese and English. There’s nothing I like better than going to school.”
Not long after arrival, Harun was sick. Sore throat. Cough. Unable to leave his bed. 866-307-3259

hether you’ve been with Food for the Hungry from the beginning (an amazing 50 years) ... or if you’re new in your support of FH .... Because you’re considering making your Christmas gifts about helping people on the other side of the planet tells me: When you see children and families hurting, you know you have to do something. We share this in common. From the very beginning, when Dr. Larry Ward founded Food for the Hungry in 1971, his focus was on the most vulnerable people in the hardest places on earth. God drew him to the people who were impacted the most severely by disasters and crisis situations. He intentionally sought out those who were suffering and needed help most. His early years with FH were spent airlifting food into Bangladesh, serving on the FH Mercy Ship in the South China Sea, responding to earthquakes in Managua, Nicaragua, and Guatemala. He advocated for rape victims and helped leaders put disaster risk plans in place. No place was too hopeless. No place was too far. And when I first worked with FH 35 years ago as a volunteer, my experience in one of the hard places — famine-ravaged Ethiopia — changed my life. I became even more passionate about helping “the least of these” — a driving force throughout my career which has come full-circle as I now lead FH. I wish I could share with
By Mark Viso, President & CEO you the countless stories I’ve heard this past year: Of communities around the world who have overcome extreme poverty through the power of hope and the affirmation of self-sustainability. Food insecurity is no longer a threat. Dirty water no longer makes families and communities sick. Kids no longer face the choice between meeting the needs of today or building their dreams for tomorrow. Families encounter the compassion of Christ through the love of others. Of people like you who not only made it happen through their generosity, but whose lives have been touched and given new purpose in doing so. By sponsoring a child in extreme poverty; compassionately responding in the name of Jesus when disasters strike. And giving Christmas gifts that make a lasting difference for families and communities. But even after 50 years, our work is far from over. Just this past year with the COVID-19 pandemic — and the ensuing hunger pandemic, which has the potential to devastate the lives of millions — we’ve heard cries for support from hard places we have yet to get to. And the places where we’re already at work — places made extremely vulnerable by lack of food, water, education — have had their suffering compounded and their obstacles to escaping poverty permanently all the more daunting. Together we — you, me, our families, and FH — must continue to be there for the children and families in the hardest places now and when the next crisis hits. Thank you for being with us these last 50 years. And I invite you to join us in responding to those who need us most over the next 50 years and beyond.

Devastated by Disaster, Then Restored to HOPE
H
asina’s despair was so deep, she planned her suicide. A massive cyclone devastated the coastal region of Bangladesh, including the community where Hasina had spent her whole life. Thousands lost homes, livestock, farms, and fishing jobs. Hasina and her husband Khalil lost everything. They scrambled to find shelter. There was little or no work. They struggled to feed and clothe themselves and their three young daughters. School was out of the question. The girls were becoming malnourished. The young mother felt as if she was losing her mind. Believing there was no other way, Hasina thought of killing herself ... Until a friend like you gave generously, an FH team arrived in her town, and we had the joy of meeting this family’s most immediate physical needs and setting the stage for the long-term work of helping them and
their community recover and become self-sustaining. With help from an FH savings group, Hasina learned to raise poultry and began a small chicken farm. Her youngest daughter became a sponsored child. The girls returned to school and got healthy. Today, with nutritious food and adequate income, the family is not only surviving but THRIVING!
“Before, I was hopeless,” Hasina says. “I had no idea of depending on God. FH taught me about the Creator and His blessings. Now I am able to take care of my family.” 866-307-3259
