WELCOME

Welcome to Food Tank’s 2nd Annual Washington, D.C. Summit. We’re honored to partner with American University, and we’re excited to have you all here to discuss some of the most pressing challenges around food, agriculture, and the environment. But we aren’t here just to lament the enormity of these problems— we’re here to come up with long-lasting solutions. Solutions that only come about when all of us—farmers, eaters, businesses, policymakers, academics, youth, funders, media, and civil society—come together to break down silos and listen to one another. We hope that over the next few days you feel invigorated, angry, perplexed, inspired, challenged, and, most of all, hopeful about the future of the food system. We are not here to complain or lament but to figure out the steps for creating more equitable, safe, healthy, and nourishing food system. A food system where we understand that the true costs of food production aren’t always included in the price we pay at the checkout counter. A food system that values women, youth, and workers, and a food system where no one is left on the outside looking in. A food system that looks ahead by valuing the past. A food system where we realize that we are all eaters, and we all have a unique and important part to play in both nourishing ourselves and the planet. The more than 75 experts speaking at the Summit have a lot to share, but the conversation won’t end after the Summit is over. Food Tank will make sure it continues through our articles, op-eds, reports, videos, webinars, and social media over the next year. Please contribute to the discussion and offer your thoughts, suggestions, and criticisms. Food Tank grows from the ground up, and we can’t do that without your input. Thank you for attending the Summit. We’re excited to see what unfolds over the next few days! Danielle Nierenberg President, Food Tank

On behalf of American University and our top-10 ranked School of International Service, welcome to the 2nd Annual Washington, D.C., Food Tank Summit. This event, with more than 75 speakers from the food and agriculture field, dovetails with the work of our faculty who conduct transformational research at the intersection of food, agriculture, and politics. Why is this research important? Everyone eats. What we eat – and how and where it is grown – is one of the most critical global policy issues of our time. I’m proud of our faculty’s research on agricultural biodiversity, conflict cuisine, and the links between environmental policy, agrarian politics, and human rights. I invite you to learn more about them and about our school, founded in 1957 to answer President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s call to train students of international affairs to “wage peace,” during this important event on our campus. James Goldgeier, Dean School of International Service American University

SPEAKERS AND PANELISTS Baldemar was born in 1947, and grew up in a migrant farmworker family based in the Rio Grande valley ofTexas. Every year, the family would migrate to the Midwest and other regions to work in the fieldsplanting, weeding, and harvesting crops like pickles, tomatoes, sugar beets, and berries. They traveled intrucks and old cars, and often lived in barns and converted chicken coops. The family eventually settled inOhio, and Baldemar worked in the fields seasonally through his high school years to help support thefamily. He continued his education and received a BA in Sociology from Bluffton College in 1969, the firstmember of his family to graduate from college. Incensed by the injustices suffered by his family and other farmworkers, Baldemar founded the FarmLabor Organizing Committee (FLOC) in 1967. The basic issue was the right of farmworkers to have theirown voice in the conditions that affect their lives. He began organizing migrant and seasonal farmworkersin Northwest Ohio, living on bare necessities and on occasion being arrested for leafleting in migrant laborcamps. As he struggled for justice for farmworkers, Baldemar realized that it was the agricultural corporations, rather than the growers, who control the conditions which affect farm laborers. The focus of FLOCbecame changing the structure of the agricultural industry through three-way negotiations among themajor parties involved in agricultural production (farmworkers, growers, corporations). In 1978, Baldemar led over 2,000 FLOC workers on strike, the largest in agricultural history of Midwest, who demanded union recognition and a multiparty bargaining agreement. The following year, FLOC heldits first constitutional convention as a labor union, and the workers voted to boycott Campbell Soup in their call for negotiations.

Can growing almonds fight climate change? When you eat almonds, you’re choosing more than just a highly nutritious food. A recent study in the Journal of Industrial Ecology found that almond trees in California absorb and store significant amounts of greenhouse gas throughout their lifespans. And as the almond community continues and does even more to use its coproducts from producing and harvesting almonds—like hulls, shells and other tree biomass— they’ll further contribute to becoming carbon neutral, or even carbon negative, if policy changes and production advancements work hand in hand. To learn more, visit almondsustainability.org.

Elias Marvinney, Alissa Kendall, Sonja Brodt, Weiyuan Zhu. Life Cycle-based Assessment of Energy Use and Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Almond Production, Part II: Uncertainty Analysis Through Sensitivity Analysis and Scenario Testing. Journal of Industrial Ecology, 2015, 10.1111/jiec.12333. Good news about almonds and heart health. Scientific evidence suggests, but does not prove, that eating 1.5 ounces per day of most nuts, such as almonds, as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol may reduce the risk of heart disease. One serving of almonds (28 grams) has 13 grams of unsaturated fat and only 1 gram of saturated fat. © 2016 Almond Board of California. All rights reserved.
