Winner of the 2017 Nebraska Sportscaster of the Year award, Greg Sharpe begins his 11th football season as the Voice of the Huskers. Sharpe is also the lead broadcaster for Husker baseball and hosts Sports Nightly. Sharpe began broadcasting Husker sporting events in the winter of 2003, when he was tabbed to do play-by-play on Fox Sports Midwest’s broadcasts of Nebraska men’s and women’s basketball. After filling in on the last three football broadcasts in 2007, he was named the full-time voice of the Huskers in February 2008. Sharpe came to the Husker Sports Network after a successful 21-year run at WIBW Radio and TV in Topeka, Kan, including six years as voice of the K-State Wildcats. Sharpe won two Kansas Sportscaster of the Year awards at WIBW. Kent Pavelka will broadcast his 33rd season of Nebraska men’s basketball in 2018-19, adding to one of the most legendary careers in broadcasting in the state of Nebraska. Pavelka began broadcasting Husker sports in 1974, when he was hired by KFAB of Omaha to call Nebraska men’s basketball and serve as color commentator to Lyell Bremser on broadcasts of Husker football. In 1984, Pavelka was elevated to the playby-play job for Husker football while still calling Nebraska basketball, in an 11-year tenure as voice of the Huskers that included two football national championships. After an 11-year absence, Pavelka returned as a Husker broadcaster for the 2006-07 men’s basketball season and has called Husker hoops ever since. Pavelka will broadcast his 1,000th Husker men’s basketball game this season. The soundtrack to five volleyball national championships, John Baylor is in his 25th season as the play-by-play voice of Nebraska volleyball on the Husker Sports Network. Baylor became the broadcaster for Husker volleyball in 1994 and has called 16 conference championship teams, 24 NCAA tournaments, and 10 NCAA regional championship teams, along with the five national titles. Baylor has also broadcasted Nebraska women’s basketball (two years) and Husker baseball (seven years), while also calling the first five seasons of Lincoln Saltdogs baseball and the first two seasons of Lincoln Stars hockey.
The man who made “You Betcha!” a catchphrase around Nebraska women’s basketball, Matt Coatney enters his 20th year broadcasting Nebraska women’s basketball and his 18th as the play-by-play voice of the team. In addition, Coatney is preparing for his sixth season as a pregame and postgame host for the Husker Sports Network’s football coverage. Coatney began broadcasting Nebraska women’s basketball in the 1999-2000 season, taking over on a full-time basis two years later. In 2012, he added pregame and postgame duties on the football broadcasts, including hosting Big Red Reaction, hosting the 5th Quarter Show and serving as studio host during the play-by-play. Coatney has also filled in on broadcasts of Husker volleyball, men’s basketball and softball.

MEN’S BASKETBALL BY BEN MCLAUGHLIN
LINING UP FOR A POSTSEASON RUN In Pinnacle Bank Arena’s inaugural season, Nebraska went 15-1 at home and earned its first NCAA Tournament berth since 1998. After three straight seasons finishing under .500, the Cornhuskers returned to the postseason last year, racking up 22 wins and earning an NIT invite. The Huskers have high expectations in 2018-19 as they return their top four scorers from a team that won a school record 13 conference games.
James Palmer Jr. will once again look to anchor the Husker scoring attack this season. The 6-6 senior guard earned First Team All-Big Ten honors (Coaches) last season after averaging over 17 points and 4 rebounds per game. Palmer’s supporting cast consists of fellow seniors Isaac Copeland Jr. and Glynn Watson Jr. Copeland joined Palmer in returning to Nebraska for his senior season after both contemplated professional basketball this summer. Watson will eclipse 100 career games at
Nebraska this year and already ranks in the top 10 in school history in a handful of categories. He will once again be the engine that drives the Husker offense in 2018-19. Junior Isaiah Roby will have an increased roll as he continued to build on his NBA frame, standing at 6-8, 230 pounds. His 7-2 wingspan and additional 40 pounds of muscle since arriving on campus has scouts buzzing over his potential. Nebraska’s postseason hopes will

require additional contribution from its sophomore class – Thomas Allen, Nana Akenten and Iceland native Thorir Thorbjarnarson. Allen was the only freshman to play significant minutes for head coach Tim Miles last season, appearing in 32 games and knocking down 17 3-pointers. His breakout game came against No. 13 Kansas with a career high 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Akenten is arguably the best young athlete on the team and with the departures of Anton Gill and Evan Taylor, there are plenty of minutes to be had at the guard position. The 6-6 Akenten can leap out of the gym, but needs to be a more consistent shooter and provide good defense to stay on the floor. Nebraska has added a pair of freshmen that will be relied upon for minutes. A pair of athletic, 6-6 guards in Amir Harris (Frederick, Md.) will both

try and crack the rotation. The value of forward Brady Heiman (Springfield, Neb.) has significantly increased after the transfer of Center Jordy Tshimanga. The 6-11 big man has already added 20 pounds since joining the team, and will need to be ready when the season tips off Nov. 1. Two other players have been added to Nebraska’s roster for the 2018-19 season. Dedoch Chan is a transfer from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. A native of Rochester, Minn., Chan averaged almost 17 pointer per game while grabbing 9 rebounds per game during his one season with the Bulldogs. The other is Dachon Burke Jr., a transfer from Robert Morris. Burke will be a valuable asset to the scout team as he is required by the NCAA to sit one season after transferring. During the offseason, Miles added new assistant coach Armon Gates to his

staff after former assistant Kenya Hunter accepted a position at UConn. Following a brief stint at the University of Florida, Gates made the move the Lincoln in May. Miles will once again be helped by Michael Lewis (third year) and Jim Molinari (fifth year). Nebraska will ramp up its nonconference schedule in 2018-19. The lineup will feature seven games with opponents who reached postseason play (NCAA or NIT Tournaments), including NCAA Tournament teams Creighton, Clemson, Seton Hall and Cal State Fullerton. At the 2018 National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame Classic, Nebraska will play an Elite 8 Finisher from last season as Texas Tech and USC are on the other side of the four-team bracket. Nebraska opens the tournament with Missouri State at the

Sprint Center in Kansas City on Nov. 19 at 6 pm. One of the reasons the committee chose to the leave the Huskers out the NCAA Tournament last year was strength of schedule and lack of quality wins. Nebraska’s non-conference schedule shouldn’t be an issue this time around. Expectations for this Husker team couldn’t be much higher with some national outlets projecting a Sweet 16 appearance by the Huskers. With strong locker room leadership and comradery, a competitive and grueling summer, and the confidence of a 22-win season, the hype around these Huskers is real. After a tie for fourth-place finish in the league, Nebraska will not be flying under the radar this season. They have the attention of the entire Big Ten Conference and teams around the nation.

JAMES PALMER JR. 6-6 // SENIOR // GUARD UPPER MARLBORO, MD. Nebraska wasn’t quite sure what to expect in terms of production from Miami transfer, James Palmer Jr. last season. It didn’t take long for Palmer to emerge as one of the Big Ten’s best players. He was one of two Huskers to start all 18 conference games last season, and averaged 17.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game on his way to First Team All-Big Ten honors (Coaches). Palmer chose to return to Nebraska for his senior season after looking at professional basketball, and will be one of the conference’s best returning players.

ISAAC COPELAND JR. 6-9 // SENIOR // FORWARD RALEIGH, N.C. Isaac Copeland transferred to Nebraska from Georgetown thanks to former assistant coach Kenya Hunter, former Husker Anton Gill, and yes, the athletic training staff at Nebraska. Recovering from back surgery, Copeland was able to get healthy and provide the Huskers with 12.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. The 6-9 senior from Raleigh, N.C., earned himself Honorable Mention All-Big Ten accolades last year, and will be a focal point to Nebraska’s plans this season.

Winter 2018
MEN’S BASKETBALL Ben: I know at this time a year ago, everyone talked about your team and how competitive it was. Was it the same story this summer? Miles: We’ve had good days and bad days. I really felt last year’s team had gone through some tough waters and did a great job finishing the season strong, but it felt a little hollow not making the NCAA tournament. Now, as I look at this spring and summer, they’ve worked really hard. This group is one of the hardest working groups that we’ve had collectively. I expect big things, I think they do too. As we look forward, they set a good example for the younger guys coming in and that we’ve got some real star power and we’ve got some younger guys trying to figure out where they fit in and how they can help those star power guys. Ben: It’s always interesting the analyzation that goes on, especially with the season you guys had last year where you just missed out on the NCAA tournament, when you have all the wins and the most conference record wins ever for a program. How do you go about analyzing that and the NCAA’s new formula, taking out the RPI? Miles: The new formula is a mystery. I think we still have plenty of strength in our schedule, non-conference schedule, but at the same time when you’re an upstart like we were a year ago, it’s really hard if you don’t get those huge wins. We can control what we can control and I’m excited about what our fans and what everyone is going to be a part of this year in Pinnacle Bank Arena and throughout our season. Ben: Let’s talk about the non-conference schedule. You’re in a tournament in Kansas City, Creighton, the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. How do you balance that non-conference schedule with that conference schedule?
Miles: The Big Ten is the first conference to go to a 20-game schedule in their league, so we are going to have 20 Big Ten games, 10 at home and 10 on the road. You add in two high quality teams to your schedule, we kept the Big East teams, we go on the road to the ACC Challenge, we are going to play Oklahoma State neutral, then Southern Cal, Missouri State, and Texas Tech in Kansas City. I don’t think our schedule wants for much. Ben: It’s probably nice to have guys like Copeland and Palmer and Isaiah, guys that tested the waters of the NBA, but decided to come back. Tell us about their mentality now, coming back knowing for sure that this is the last go around. Miles: The test-the-water guys are really interesting. A guy like Isaiah Roby, has a chance to go out and just see where he’s at, Palmer gets four workouts, Copeland gets a couple and it’s really good for them for a couple reasons. One, they get the feedback that they need, that they deserve, to find out where they stand. Two, they know what to go work on. I met with Tom Osborne this summer and he told me a great story about Grant Wistrom and Jason Peter. They had a chance after a good season, not a great season, to go to the NFL. They decided to come back and win a national championship, which they did. They only had three letters that they couldn’t use in the locker room that year, which were N-F-L and I think the same thing goes for us. That’s in the future, that’s great, but we are going to control the now, the everyday stuff. These guys are great examples, they work really hard and they are terrific players and that really helps. Ben: Some of these freshmen are going to have to come in and play right away. How has their mentality been this offseason and

practice so far knowing they are going to have to play? Miles: We have seen great strides in their game, in their performance. I think we have seen great strides in their mentality and we need them to step up because what we lose in Evan and Anton, Duby Okeke were all guys who could go in a game and physically compete. Now we’ve got some even younger guys like Brady Heiman, Amir Harris that might be pretty good athletes, pretty mobile, but at the same time aren’t at the level of experience and knowledge of those other guys, so the good news is these guys want to help and be a star in their role, the bad news is we are thin. We are dangerously thin in my book, so we need things to go right, foul trouble, injury, those things need to stay away and make sure the Huskers can put their best five out there at all times.

Ben: Expectation is a great thing for the fans, gets people excited, maybe a scary thing as a coach. When you hear that word expectation this year, what do you think of and how are you going to handle it when it’s brought up? Miles: I agree with you 100 percent, expectation is a great thing. We use the expectations to get better. But nobody expects more than ourselves and this team is ready for the expectation and we’re excited to go out there and contend for league championships, go out there and contend for a chance to make the NCAA tournament and certainly we want to win, if we do make the NCAA tournament. We want to win when we get there. This is going to be an exciting year. It’s going to be a dramatic one for fans to watch and be a part of and I can’t wait to get started.

ILLINOIS
NEED TO KNOW
» Coach Brad Underwood returns to the Illini after finishing 14-18 and 4-14 in league play. » Underwood has re-worked the Illini roster as he continues to seek players for his uptempo system. The newcomers outnumber the returnees 8-4, but there appears to be an upgrade in overall team talent. The two prize freshmen are Ayo Dosunmu, a 6-5 combo guard who played for Team USA in the under-19 Pan American games. Tevian Jones is a bit of an under-the-radar type recruit. He’s very athletic, perhaps the most athletic on the team. Another freshman, Alan Griffin, has a reputation as a lights-out shooter. » Trent Frazier is coming off an outstanding freshman season. The left-handed point guard is one of the quickest players in the Big Ten. Frazier will need to pace Illinois offensively after the departure of Leron Black (15.3 ppg) who is playing professionally in Europe. » Kipper Nichols improved as the season went on last year and will need to be a consistent contributor inside where the Illini are young and without a lot of known depth. » Illinois lost a handful of games late last season, so closing games will be a big focus as the Illini try to get back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013.

INDIANA
NEED TO KNOW
» After a slow 5-5 start to his inaugural season at Indiana, Archie Miller settled in and won 16 games in year one. IU isn’t a rebuild school, but Miller’s personality has won over Bloomington and big things are expected in year two. » The Hoosier’s offense starts with Juwan Morgan. Morgan is the leading scorer (16.5 points) and rebounder (7.4) from IU’s team last year. He’ll be a borderline NBA draft player entering the year. » Indiana once again brings in one of the top recruiting classes in the nation; a 3-star (Jake Forrester), three 4-stars (Jerome Hunter, Damezi Anderson and Rob Phinisee) and even a 5-star prospect (Romeo Langford). » Langford is the source of optimism and excitement around the Hoosiers this year. As one of the top recruits in the country and a McDonalds All-American, the 6-6 guard is a projected NBA Lottery pick in the upcoming draft. Looking for the next star in the league? He could be leading the Hoosiers season. » Fans and media in Bloomington gave Miller a pass in year one, but expectations are higher in year two. After missing the postseason last season, the pressure is on.

NEED TO KNOW
» After making the postseason six straight years, including three straight trips to the NCAA Tournament 2014, 2015 and 2016, the Hawkeyes will look to return to postseason play after a one-year absence. » Iowa returns a ton of a experience. The top eight players, including all five starters, return from last year’s squad. » The Hawkeyes will have to improve defensively if they want to do better than last year’s 4-14, 13th place finish in the Big Ten. Iowa was the worst in the conference in scoring defense, allowing 78.7 points per game. » The multi-talented Jordan Bohannon paces the Hawkeye attack. The 6-0 junior guard is the only player in the country with more than 150 assists and 80 three-pointers in both his freshman and sophomore seasons. He’s also deadly at the foul line, hitting 90 percent of his free throws last year and 88 percent of his free throws during his Iowa career. » The Hawkeyes will play at Madison Square Garden as part of the 2K Classic in mid-November. After taking on Oregon, Iowa will face either Syracuse or UConn.

The Terrapins finished 8th in the Big Ten with an 8-10 record, and went 19-12 overall, missing out on postseason play. » Maryland loses one of their top players in Kevin Huerter to the NBA Draft. Huerter was selected with the 19th overall pick by the Atlanta Hawks. However, a pair of NBA prospects, Anthony Cowan Jr. and Bruno Fernando, chose to return to College Park. » Cowan led the Terps in scoring last season with nearly 16 points per game, while the 6-10 Fernando added 10 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, with a team leading 37 blocks. » Maryland also brings in a top 10 recruiting class with highly touted freshmen Jalen Smith, Aaron Wiggins and Eric Ayala expected to see the floor right away and play a key role this season » The highlight of the Terrapins non-conference schedule comes in late November against Virginia. » After making it all the way to the national championship game last year, Michigan will have a target on its back this season. The Wolverines fell in the title game to Villanova, 79-62. » The Wolverines will have to replace both the production and leadership of its two best players from last year, Mo Wagner (14.6 points, 7.1 rebounds) and Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman (12.9 points, 35 minutes per game). » Michigan will look for their sophomores to take a big step forward in Isaiah Livers and Jordan Poole on the offensive end of the floor. Poole hit the game-winning 3-pointer against Houston with Michigan down by two points in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. » John Beilein recruited a top 10 class this year, and will need help from his five freshmen (Ignas Brazdeikis, Brandon Johns Jr., Colin Castleton, David DeJulius, Adrien Nunez). » As one of the most underrated coaches in all of college basketball, Coach Beilein will need to find a cohesive starting five with the roster turnover. » Last year, the Golden Gophers went 15-17, including a 4-14 mark in conference play. Three of their four conference wins were at home in Minneapolis. In the non-conference, they defeated No. 25 Alabama in the championship game of the Barclays Center Classic and narrowly lost to No. 10 Miami in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge, falling 86-81. » This season is Richard Pitino’s sixth in maroon and gold. He is 90-78 at Minnesota with a 31-59 mark in conference play. In the 2013-2014 season, his first at Minnesota, the Golden Gophers won the NIT Championship, and they qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2016-2017. » Minnesota returns a solid core from last season. Senior forward Jordan Murphy forewent the NBA draft after averaging a double-double of 16.8 points and 11.3 rebounds per game as a junior in 32 minutes per game. Also returning are sophomore guard Isaiah Washington, senior guard Dupree McBrayer, and junior guard Amir Coffey, who combined to average 32.1 points, 8.8 rebounds, and 8 assists per game. » Minnesota added two transfers over the offseason. Brock Stull is a graduate transfer guard from Milwaukee University who averaged 13.4 points on a 38/38/74 percent shooting split. NORTHWESTERN
NEED TO KNOW
» Head Coach Chris Collins put Northwestern basketball on the map two years ago, with the team’s first NCAA Tournament appearance and win in school history over Vanderbilt. After a furious comeback attempt, the Wildcats fell to No. 1 seeded Gonzaga 79-73. » Last year, however, was a debacle. The Cats finished 15-17 and lost their last seven games. Lack of chemistry and poor defense contributed to the team’s struggles. Northwestern also spent stretches of the season without two of their best players to injury in Bryant McIntosh and Vic Law. » This year’s team can go either way. Returning for their final seasons are good players: Law (had offseason surgery that addressed an issue with lung capacity/shortness of breath), Dererk Pardon and emerging guard Anthony Gaines. Plus Aaron Falzon, a decent shooter, and Barret Benson, a back-to-the-basket guy who slumped as a sophomore return. » Ryan Taylor (grad transfer from Evansville), freshman Miller Kopp, Pete Nance and Ryan Greer will need to help immediately after the departures of McIntosh and Scottie Lindsey (15.2 ppg). » Northwestern is moving back into the new Welsh-Ryan Arena, which underwent a $110 million upgrade. The first opponent is New Orleans, Nov. 8.

OHIO STATE
NEED TO KNOW
» Without question the most pleasant surprise in the Big Ten Conference last year was Ohio State. First year head coach, and Big Ten Coach of the Year Chris Holtmann led Ohio State to a 25-9 record and the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes finished 15-3 in league play, good for a second place finish. » After coming over from Butler University, Holtmann used Big Ten Player of the Year Keita Bates-Diop, senior leader and 2nd Team All-Big Ten performer Jae’Sean Tate and outstanding freshman Kaleb Wesson to blow through the Big Ten and land a 5th seed in the NCAA Tournament. » The Buckeyes will welcome in four highly touted freshmen to Columbus for Holtmann’s first full recruiting class in Luther Muhammad, Duane Washington Jr., Jaedon LeDee and Justin Ahrens. » Ohio State will need its two seniors C.J. Jackson and Keyshawn Woods to be the glue in 2018-19. Jackson is in his 3rd season at OSU after transferring from Eastern Florida State and Woods is a graduate transfer from Wake Forest of the ACC. » This summer Ohio State spent 11 days in Spain and played a total of three games. The Buckeyes won all three of their games in the cities of Madrid, Valencia and Barcelona.

PENN STATE
NEED TO KNOW
» Penn State won the NIT championship a year ago, and was one of the hottest teams in the country to finish the season. The Nittany Lions beat Temple, Notre Dame, Marquette, Mississippi State and finally Utah at Madison Square Garden for their second NIT title in the last 10 years. » After the success of the team, sophomore guard Tony Carr made the decision to go to the NBA. A questionable decision by many, Carr was drafted in the 2nd round, with the 51st pick by the New Orleans Pelicans. Carr did not make the roster and signed a contract to play in Italy this season. » Without Carr, expectations in State College are modified from a Sweet 16 team to one that should be an at-large in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Patrick Chambers. » Penn State rewarded Chambers with a contract extension through the year 2022, giving Nittany Lion hoops some rare stability. » Lamar Stevens is a good player who will step into the leading scorer role. Josh Reaves is one of the Big Ten’s most versatile players – a tremendous defender who goes all out and also has improved as a scoring threat.

PURDUE
NEED TO KNOW
» Last year, the Boilermakers went 30-7, including 15-3 in Big Ten action. In the regular season, Purdue defeated No. 2 Arizona in the Battle 4 Atlantis and No. 17 Louisville in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Purdue also won two NCAA tournament games as the No. 2 seed in the East Region, defeating 15th-seeded Cal State Fullerton and 10th-seeded Butler before falling to third-seeded Texas Tech in the Sweet 16. » Matt Painter returns to the Purdue sideline for his 14th year in charge of the program. He has a 295-149 record and has guided the Boilermakers to 10 NCAA tournament appearances, two regular-season conference championships, and one conference tournament championship. » A major key for Purdue this season is replacing the production it lost to graduation. Center Isaac Haas, forward Vincent Edwards, and guards Dakota Mathias and P.J. Thompson were key cogs for Painter last year. » Carsen Edwards is a key returner for Purdue. He returns testing the NBA draft waters. Last year, he led the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game, including posting 14 games with 20 or more points.

RUTGERS
NEED TO KNOW
» Head coach Steve Pikiell begins his third season in Piscataway. Rutgers won just 17 combined games in the two seasons prior to his arrival, but Pikiell has nearly doubled that total (15-17, 15-19) and shown steady signs of improvement. » The Scarlet Knights have finished 14th in the Big Ten standings all four years since joining the conference. They have identical 3-15 league records the past two seasons, last year notching wins over Wisconsin, Iowa and Northwestern. » Although Rutgers has been more competitive under Pikiell, including an overtime loss at No. 4 Michigan State, continuing the climb will be tough. The Scarlet Knights lost one of the league’s top scorers to graduation as they’ll have to replace Corey Sanders (15.2 ppg). » Guard Geo Baker (10.8 ppg) will be expected to pick up some of the scoring. Baker was the team’s third leading scorer in 2017-18 behind Sanders and graduated senior Deshawn Freeman. » Rutgers signed a talented recruiting class that includes top 150 guard Montez Mathis, forward Ron Harper Jr. (son of NBA champion Ron Harper), as well as juco big man Shaq Carter.

» Wisconsin missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years last season, finishing 15-18 (7-11 Big Ten) in head coach Greg Gard’s second full campaign. Gard is 57-36 (31-12 Big Ten) since taking over for the legendary Bo Ryan in December 2015. » In 2017-18, Nebraska swept the Badgers for the first time since joining the league. The sweep included NU’s first win in Madison, a 74-63 come-from-behind victory in the middle of a six-game winning streak. » Wisconsin won four of its last six to end the 2017-18 season. That included a win over No. 6 Purdue and a pair of close losses to No. 2 Michigan State by a combined eight points. » Wisconsin is poised to return to the upper half of the Big Ten standings as Gard returns all five starters. That includes first-team All-Big Ten selection Ethan Happ (17.9 ppg, 8.0 rpg) and All-Freshman pick Brad Davison (12.1 ppg). » In addition to bringing back its top eight scorers, the Badgers have UW-Green Bay transfer Trevor Anderson eligible this season. He averaged 9.8 ppg as a freshman in 2016-17.

After producing the nation’s best turnaround in 2017-18, Coach Amy Williams and the Nebraska women’s basketball team will take aim at earning a repeat trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2018-19.
Amy Williams, who enters her third season leading the Huskers, led Nebraska to a 21-11 overall record that marked a 14-game improvement in the win column over Nebraska’s 2016-17 campaign. The Huskers added a top-four finish in the Big Ten regular-season standings with an 11-5 record and a trip to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals before advancing to the first round of the 2018 NCAA Tournament. “I watched last year’s team work extremely hard all postseason, summer and preseason,” Williams said. “Their commitment was really made mostly in strength and conditioning. They pushed themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of and because of that, it built confidence. It was truly a
snowball effect. Their confidence in themselves and each other turned into chemistry and commitment. Nobody really cared about their own egos. They were a selfless team that puts each other first.” Nebraska’s unselfish, team-first approach became infectious throughout the season and the conference took notice by naming Williams the 2018 Big Ten Coach of the Year. Now, Williams and the Huskers are faced with a new set of challenges in 2018-19. The Big Red must replace graduated senior guards Jasmine Cincore, Janay Morton and Emily Wood, while facing a significantly stronger 2018-19 schedule that includes NCAA Women’s Final Four qualifier Louisville

in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, NCAA Tournament teams Miami and Creighton on the road, and Washington State (Pac12) and Arkansas (SEC) in early season road games. Nebraska’s home schedule starts with NCAA qualifier and Summit League champion Drake and includes former Big 12 rival Kansas, along with Big Ten battles against 2018 NCAA qualifiers Michigan, Maryland, Minnesota and Iowa, along with traditional powers Rutgers, Purdue and Michigan State and 2018 WNIT champion Indiana. “We have the potential to be a better basketball team than we were last season, but maybe not have the record to show for it,” Williams said. “Our road non-conference schedule is extremely difficult, and I think the Big Ten will be better from top to bottom. It is good that we have some experienced players who know what to expect.” The cupboard is far from bare for the Big Red, as the Huskers return their top

The 5-9 junior guard from Barneveld, Wis., added 4.0 rebounds per game and led the Huskers with 41 steals, while also connecting on a team-high 73 threes. Maddie Simon, a 6-2 senior from Lincoln Pius X, ranked second in scoring (10.1 ppg) and rebounding (5.3 rpg) in her first full season at forward. She will be key in providing leadership on and off the court. Taylor Kissinger, a 6-1 guard/forward from Minden, finished third on the team in scoring as a freshman with 10.0 points per game, while ranking second with 50 threes despite missing seven games with an injury. Kate Cain did more than just score. The 6-5 center from Middletown, N.Y., smashed Nebraska season (100) and game (11) block records to earn a spot on

Goehle is from Hills, Minn., and graduated from Augustana (S.D.) in 1993.

FRESH FACES MAKE FOR EXCITEMENT
Matt Coatney sits down with Amy Williams

HUSKER SPORTS
Winter 2018
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Matt Coatney: I think about how young your team is coming into this season, only two seniors, you return four starters. You have six players who have been starters either here or at another school. How do you feel about the starting experience you return this year?
weapons that we can have consistently behind that arc, the more dangerous that our team and offense becomes. We are going to use that as a threat for our team to be able to come at you from a lot of different people from behind that arc.
Amy Williams: I am excited about the fact we have some of that, when you look at 45 percent of your roster being new and never playing a game in a Husker uniform, then to be able to lean on some of those players that have done it frequently and have been key pieces for us up to this point, we’re going to really rely on them to be great leaders for the half of the roster that’s new. Coatney: Hannah Whitish really came into her own last season earning second-team All Big Ten recognition. She was the only Husker to start all 32 games. She led your team in scoring, assists, steals and threepointers. How much of a jump do you look for her to make heading into her junior season?
Coatney: The emergence of Kate Cain certainly had something to do with the school record three-pointers. What can Husker fans expect to see from Kate Cain as a sophomore? Williams: Kate’s a huge reason why our team was able to set a record with threepointers and not just because she demands so much attention in the paint. She’s a very willing passer, she makes good reads, kicks that ball back out to shooters in good positions to score. Kate made some very significant strides this offseason in the weight room, she’s playing with confidence. Coatney: Maddie Simon is your only returning senior from last year’s team, what do you need from Maddie leadership wise?
Williams: She still has plenty of room to continue to improve and she’s made it her goal to find ways to be more well-rounded. She is playing with a lot of confidence. She wants to be better defensively and really be able to be counted on on that end of the floor. But I think overall it’s going to be her leadership that’s going to be where she makes her greatest strides and growth this year.
Williams: She has seamlessly stepped in and she wants to be a leader for our team and she has taken on that role this summer. She has been very engaging, keeping all of the players involved and really trying to nurture the culture of our program.
Coatney: Your team had a school record 250 three’s last year. Is this season’s team capable of putting up similar numbers for you on the arc?
Williams: That’s something we’ve had a lot of conversations about this offseason, particularly because of the losses of Jasmine Cincore, who always drew the toughest defensive assignment and Janay Morton, who was a little bit of a spark for us on the defensive end. We’ve been trying to ask Nicea to be a leader for our team and set the tone on the defensive end of the floor.
Williams: We really think so. We graduated a couple of really good three-point shooters with Janay Morton and Emily Wood, but we have been able to replace that with some other players that are capable, not proven yet, but the thing for our offense is the more
Coatney: With players like Nicea Eliely and Kate Cain back, how much better do you think your team can be defensively?

Coatney: How do you see Taylor Kissinger’s role for this upcoming season? Williams: We talked about her durability and that putting in some time with the strength and conditioning staff, that it would help her conditioning and speed, but also her ability to stay on the basketball court. She has that really unique ability to set her feet and get her shot off very quickly. She’s a definite weapon offensively and she’s taking a lot more pride on both ends of the floor, wanting to be consistent defensively, as well. Coatney: You were able to add a graduate transfer, who as a senior will be eligible immediately. How excited are you to add Kristian Hudson to the mix? Williams: I am thrilled to add Kristian. Funny story there, when she made her official visit, we were a little concerned about how quiet she was. I kept stressing to her that communication is non-negotiable. Then we had her in our first practice, she’s the loudest kid on the floor and most vocal and directing traffic. She picks things up very quickly.

Winter 2018
She has a high basketball IQ, she makes the right reads off of ball screens. She has been a very valuable and welcomed addition to the roster. Coatney: You signed another top 20 recruiting class this upcoming season. How much will you be expecting out of Leigha Brown and Ashtyn Veerbeek and Sam Haiby and Kayla Mershon to contribute this season? Williams: We have 11 on our roster and we expect all 11 to contribute. They are thrown to the wolves right away, but fortunately they have some really good upperclassmen that have been showing them the way and they have been practicing and working extremely hard and that is half the battle. Coatney: What types of goals do you have for your team? A return to the NCAA Tournament? Williams: The goals are just finding small ways to continue to raise the bar with everything we do. If we can find small ways to keep raising the bar in the way that we play then we’re going to like how the results end up.
