Nebraska is set to compete in 10 tournaments in 2017-18, including at least seven tournaments the Huskers participated in last season (not including NCAA Championship). Of the seven tournaments NU is participating in this season and also competed at last season, Nebraska is defending champion at three (Mid-Winter Classic, Prairie View A&M Invitational, Crusader Classic). Nebraska will once again host the Big Red Invitational at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. NU has held the tournament in seven of the past eight seasons, winning twice and finishing no lower than fourth. The Huskers finished second at their home tournament last season, while posting the fifth-highest traditional average in program history. Nebraska returns to the Prairie View A&M Invitational, looking to make it six team titles in a row, as the Huskers have won each of the past five championships at the tournament. The Huskers will be competing at the Track Kat Klash for the seventh-consecutive season, which NU won in both the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons. In each of the six previous tournaments, NU has posted a top-five finish, including a second-place finish last season. The NCAA Championship returns to Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo., the site of the 2015 NCAA Championship which Nebraska won, NU’s last national championship. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin by a score of 4-2 in the 2015 NCAA Championship Match, and current senior Julia Bond was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. The NCAA Championship remains an eight-team format with selection determined by NCAA RPI rankings. The eight teams will play a round-robin traditional round to determine seeding for the bracket-play best-of-seven double-elimination Baker format championship tournament. The winner of the tournament will be crowned national champion.

INTRODUCTION

2017-18 NEBRASKA BOWLING

NEBRASKA BOWLING The Nebraska Bowling Facility in the East Campus Union is home to the Nebraska bowling team. The six-lane facility provides the Huskers with a tournament-quality practice facility and is one of the best in the nation. Nebraska’s locker room and coaches offices are also located at the facility. The bowling team also enjoys Husker Power, with weight rooms in Memorial Stadium, the Hawks Championship Center and the Hendricks Training Complex, as well as Nebraska’s expert-trained athletic medicine program, which features training rooms at Memorial Stadium and the Bob Devaney Sports Center. Nebraska’s excellent student-athlete-centered facilities have played an integral role in the Huskers capturing five national team championships over the past 14 seasons. The Huskers also played host to the 2008 NCAA Championships at Thunder Alley in Omaha. Overall, the Nebraska women’s bowling team has claimed 10 national titles (five NCAA, five IBC) under Coach Bill Straub since 1990, including the 2015 NCAA crown.

HUSKERS

GROWING CHAMPIONS Nebraska has established one of the richest traditions in collegiate women’s bowling over the past two decades. Coach Bill Straub led Nebraska to four national championships during the 1990s, before adding another championship in 2001. The Huskers took their championship success to another level by winning the first-ever NCAA title in the sport in 2004. Nebraska made it back-to-back NCAA Championships with a title in 2005, before claiming another crown in 2009. The Huskers added to their historic hardware haul in 2013, before capturing the 2015 title to give the program its fifth crown in the first 12 years of the NCAA Championships. Nebraska bowlers have been well-represented in national and international competitions. Under Coach Bill Straub, 14 Husker bowlers have qualified for their national teams, including U.S. National Team members Shannon Pluhowsky, Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty, Brenda Edwards, Elise Bolton, Kayla Johnson, Lizabeth Kuhlkin and current Husker Julia Bond. Recent Huskers Danielle van der Meer (Netherlands), Valerie Calberry (Canada), Shalima Zalsha (Indonesia), Bethany Hedley (England), Tan Yan Ling (Singapore), Andrea Ruiz (Colombia) and Alexandra Mosquera (Colombia) have also represented their home countries on the international level.

Top: Nebraska captured its fifth NCAA Championship in 2015 by defeating Stephen F. Austin by a score of 4-2 in the NCAA Championship match at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo. Middle: Nebraska has one of the richest bowling traditions in the country. The five-time NCAA champion Huskers contend for the national title on an annual basis and have advanced to each of the first 14 NCAA Championships, including a victory in the first NCAA-sanctioned championship in 2004. Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for each of the NCAA Championships since bowling became a NCAA sanctioned sport. Right: Three-time U.S. Amateur champion Shannon Pluhowsky represented the United States three straight years at the Bowling World Cup, an event considered the world’s premier amateur competition. In 2004, she became the first American bowler to win the Bowling World Cup in 12 years. In 2011, she became the first bowler to ever win four gold medals in the World Women’s Championships. Pluhowsky was a three-time National Collegiate Bowler of the Year for Nebraska and a four-time All-American who competed for the Big Red from 2001 to 2005. She also helped lead Nebraska to four national championships.

HUSKER STUDENT-ATHLETES Nebraska Athletics is one of the few self-sustaining athletic programs in the country. In 2016-17, Nebraska was one of only two collegiate programs in the nation to attract nearly 1.3 million fans across its seven major team sports through the doors of its world-class facilities. This incredible interest and support enables Nebraska Athletics to invest in the student-athlete experience, as well as the overall game-day experience. Nebraska is a leader in providing all the resources and support necessary for student-athletes to become successful in Academics, Athletics and Life. Nebraska will continue to strategically plan for avenues to strengthen the resources to support more than 600 Husker student-athletes across 24 sports.

ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

More than 600 student-athletes, including football junior Stanley Morgan Jr., benefit not only from Nebraska’s full cost of attendance scholarships and the MacBook Air program, but also the amazing facilities and staff support within the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex. Nebraska leads the nation in CoSIDA Academic All-America and NCAA Today’s Top Ten awards.

l6

ATHLETIC EXPERIENCE

Nebraska’s strength and conditioning has long been at the forefront of college athletics. Under the direction of Boyd Epley, Nebraska has a staff of 14 strength coaches who create personalized strength and conditioning programs for Husker student-athletes. The David and Carol Alloy Strength Complex, where Nebraska’s bowling team trains, is pictured here.

LIFE SKILLS EXPERIENCE

The Husker Life Skills program allows studentathletes to continue their development and impact lives in the community. In 2016-17, Husker student-athletes, including sophomore Raquel Orozco, pictured above at the Husker Heroes event, completed more than 400 outreach activities while volunteering nearly 8,000 hours to impact approximately 35,000 people in Nebraska communities.

HUSKERS

A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE SPORTS NUTRITION LEWIS TRAINING TABLE

Husker student-athletes have ample places to dine, as the Lewis Training Table is open extended hours for meals, while the North Stadium and Hendricks Training Complexes have areas for supplements for recovery after workouts or for snacks throughout the day. Nebraska’s three full-time sports dietitians work with the Lewis Training Table manager and executive chef to plan and prepare meals to help maximize performance for student-athletes. Nebraska’s individual nutritional counseling focuses on performance nutrition strategies, hydration, quality food choices and proper supplementation to help student-athletes reach their full potential.

In August of 2014, the NCAA Division I Board of Directors restructured the way member institutions and conferences, including the Big Ten, govern themselves. Nebraska has a great history and tradition of providing unmatched benefits and support to student-athletes. However, this change in governance, and subsequent legislation, paved the way for Nebraska to enhance the benefits and experiences for student-athletes. A few examples of these enhanced benefits are: • All scholarship student-athletes across all sports have their scholarship calculated based on the full cost of attendance. • Each student-athlete is offered an Apple MacBook Air laptop computer to enhance their learning opportunities (opposite page top left). • Nebraska has increased resources and support in all academic and performance related areas including but not limited to Academic Services, Life Skills, Athletic Medicine, Athletic Training, Strength and Conditioning, Nebraska Athletic Performance Laboratory, Nutrition and Dining Services (Training Table) and Sports Analytics.

ATHLETIC MEDICINE: CARING FOR HUSKERS

Nebraska’s Athletic Medicine facilities rank among the nation’s best, while one of the most experienced medical staffs in the nation care for all Husker student-athletes. Nebraska’s medical team consists of 13 full-time athletic trainers and eight graduate assistant trainers, led by Associate Athletic Director Dr. Lonnie Albers (kneeling far left), Head Athletic Trainer and Physical Therapist Jerry Weber and Head Football Athletic Trainer Mark Mayer. A full staff of orthopaedists is also available to the Huskers, led by Dr. Richard Dugas (pictured back in white). The Husker Athletic Medicine team also includes a full-time, in-house athletic psychologist, and sports psychiatry consultants who work directly with Husker student-athletes.

• Nebraska created the first-known Post-Eligibility Opportunity (PEO) program, where every studentathlete graduate who has exhausted their athletic eligibility has the opportunity to pursue (with Nebraska support) an internship, participate in a study abroad program or attend graduate school within the University of Nebraska system.

ACADEMIC SUCCESS Nebraska increased its nation-leading total of CoSIDA Academic All-America awards to 329 with four selections in 2016-17. Senior track standout Drew Wiseman (Bismarck, N.D., Electrical Engineering) was named the CoSIDA Men's Track and Field Academic All-American of the Year while claiming the second first-team Academic All-America award of his career. Wiseman was named Nebraska’s Male Student-Athlete of the Year and ended his career as a six-time AllAmerican. Women's track and field star Tierra Williams (Auburn, Neb.) was named Nebraska's Female Student-Athlete of the Year. She was a seven-time All-America jumper and a 2016 Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. Wiseman and Williams, who are pictured at right, were Nebraska’s 2016-17 Big Ten Medal of Honor winners. The Nebraska men’s track and field team continued its extraordinary run of CoSIDA Academic All-America success with Wiseman's firstteam selection. Four-time volleyball All-American Kadie Rolfzen (Papillion, Neb., Advertising & Public Relations) was also a first-team Academic All-American, as was All-Big Ten soccer player Caroline Flynn (Lincoln, Neb., Communication Studies). A 2016 second-team All-American on the balance beam, gymnast Danielle Breen (Ames, Iowa, Accounting) earned second-team Academic All-America honors in the Women's At-Large division. Graduation is the ultimate achievement, and 126 Husker student-athletes earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in three commencement exercises at Pinnacle Bank Arena in 2016-17.

A total of 126 Nebraska student-athletes earned their degrees in 2016-17, 54 in May 2017, 57 in December 2016 and 15 in August 2016. Alexandra Mosquera (left) earned her degree in chemical engineering in August of 2017 after being a part of five Husker teams that advanced to the NCAA Championship match, including a pair of national champions. Mosquera was a two-time Academic All-Big Ten selection, a seven-time member of the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll and a four time member of the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. Melanie Crawford (right) graduated in December of 2016 with a degree in human resource management. She earned NTCA Scholastic All-America and Academic All-Big Ten honors in her career, and she was a third-team NTCA All-American in 2014. Crawford was a strong contributor to Nebraska’s 2015 national champion and 2016 national runner-up teams.

THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE

l 10

HUSKERS

“The University of Nebraska is where I feel I really learned how to bowl. I also learned a lot about who I was as a person. Anytime you go outside your comfort zone and you leave home for the first time, you are forced to learn about the real world quickly. I am so grateful for the experiences I have had at UNL and so fortunate to have had the best coaches in the world at my disposal. The bottom line is that I didn’t go to school to bowl, but for a great education. I got both.” Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty, NTCA Bowler of the Year (2000) Nebraska Female Student-Athlete of the Year (2002) The athletic academic unit, located in the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex, provides personal and academic support to ensure that studentathletes will get the most out of their years as Huskers. Featuring one of the most innovative and comprehensive academic support systems in the country, Nebraska is dedicated to helping its student-athletes become outstanding leaders in their chosen fields. The academic support team is composed of 14 full-time staff members and is certified by the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics (N4A) as meeting the standards established by the N4A.

ACADEMIC COUNSELING

Seven academic counselors, three learning specialists and two assistant academic counselors are in place to monitor daily academic progress, receive consistent course feedback, assist with the advising/registration process and monitor continuing eligibility and progress toward graduation.

TUTORIAL SUPPORT

A tremendous resource for all academic abilities, unlimited tutorial support from approximately 75-100 tutors on staff is available from day one up to college graduation in all subject areas. The tutorial program is certified as a model tutoring program by the College Reading and Learning Association.

STUDY HALL

Nebraska’s study hall program is housed in the D.J. Sokol Enrichment Center within the Student Life Complex. Student-athletes attend a supervised, flex-time study hall that features day, evening and weekend hours. Student-athletes are required to complete a specific number of study hours each week as determined by their academic counselor and/or coach. Additional performance-based or tutor-based study hall also may be determined by the academic counselor.

MENTORING

Academic support staff serve as mentors to all incoming student-athletes and a select group of returning student-athletes. The student-athletes meet with their mentor weekly to develop time management skills, gather and report academic progress information, and discuss academic success strategies.

EDUCATIONAL ASSESSMENTS

Assessments are administered upon the request of the student-athlete, academic counselor, or coach. Learning specialists are available to administer and score informal assessments, which include a reading comprehension and a writing assessment. When more in-depth assessments are necessary, referrals are made to a consulting psychologist who conducts the assessments. If it is determined a student-athlete has a learning disability or another medical condition that impedes the student from reaching their academic potential, appropriate accommodations are implemented by the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ORIENTATION

Each new student-athlete attends an orientation at the beginning of their academic career. Student-athletes are introduced to staff, faculty, administrators, and a variety of resources that help facilitate the transition into college while enhancing awareness of support services in the Athletic Department and across campus.

PERSONAL COUNSELING

Student-athletes will find a supportive and caring environment at Nebraska. Transitional issues, stress management, time management, academic focus and problem resolution are all addressed in a proactive manner throughout the year. If necessary, counseling referrals are also made to designated practitioners.

COMPUTER RESOURCES

The Herman Student Life Complex has two computer labs available for studentathletes. The Scott Technology Center features two tech tables for use on group computer projects and group study sessions. New laptops are provided to all student-athletes for use during their academic career at Nebraska. Top: The main entrance to the Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex in West Memorial Stadium is the gateway to student-athlete success at Nebraska. The complex also features tributes to each of Nebraska’s nation-leading 329 CoSIDA Academic All-Americans and 17 NCAA Today’s Top Ten Award winners. Bottom left: Renovations to the Nebraska Student Life Complex nearly tripled the size of NU’s previous academic space in 2010. The Dick and Peg Herman Family Student Life Complex also features a technology center, a dedicated Life Skills area and the Papik Computer lab (left).

LIFE SKILLS Regarded as the premier and most comprehensive Life Skills program in college athletics, the Husker program is committed to providing proactive education, resources and support through college and beyond to promote total person development and preparation for life after sports. Led by Senior Associate Athletic Director Keith Zimmer, five full-time staff members coordinate community involvement, career planning, effective communication strategies and much more to benefit Husker student-athletes.

In May of 2017, 22 student-athletes traveled to Nicaragua as part of the NoFilter program to serve abroad with Seeds of Learning, a nonprofit organization that helps to create educational opportunities in rural Latin America. Over the course of one week, these Huskers experienced a new culture, created new friendships and relationships, and most importantly, helped build additional classrooms for a school in the town of Villa Japรณn. Former Husker and three-time NTCA All-American Gazmine Mason (front row with red bandana) was among the student-athletes who attended the trip.

l 12

HUSKERS

STUDENT-ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT Husker bowlers work hard not only on the lanes, but also in the classroom and the community. Sophomore Allison Morris (top) was honored with a Sam Foltz Hero 27 Leadership Award at the 2017 Nebraska student-athlete awards banquet, A Night at the Lied. The Huskers also volunteered their time at the Boo at the Bob event before Halloween last year (middle left), while Julia Bond, a three-time Tom Osborne Citizenship Team selection, earned a letter and a spot in Nebraska’s prestigious N Club in the fall of 2015 (middle right).

PROACTIVE EDUCATION

The Life Skills team organizes several orientations aimed at acclimating student-athletes to college life. Additionally, all incoming student-athletes attend the fall semester Husker Life Seminar. INDIVIDUAL MEETINGS

Every Nebraska student-athlete is assigned a Life Skills staff member who will assist with personal and career development. The meetings help each studentathlete identify a career focus and implement a plan to increase career marketability.

CAREER COMMITMENT & NETWORKING Annually, Nebraska Life Skills organizes a StudentAthlete Career Fair, Networking Night (pictured bottom left) and other career events aimed at connecting Huskers with companies desiring competitive, hardworking, accountable candidates. Athlete Network and Husker Hire Link provide opportunities to explore career opportunities across the country.

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Nebraska student-athletes readily accept the rolemodel challenge, collectively giving more than 7,500 hours annually to impact thousands across the state of Nebraska. Outreach events include but are not limited to hospital visits, mentoring, school assemblies, statewide rallies, Make-A-Wish, School is Cool and Husker Heroes.

LEADERSHIP

Nebraska Life Skills provides student-athletes with countless opportunities to enhance leadership skills while distinguishing themselves from the competition. Student-athletes can be members of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, Uplifting Athletes Chapter or Inner Circle. However, his dedication and commitment to Nebraska bowling runs much deeper, as he coached both the men’s and women’s teams for over 20 years dating back to when both programs were club sports. During his tenure, the Husker men’s and women’s teams have combined for 12 national titles in the past 26 years. The Nebraska women’s bowling program won national championships in 1991, 1995, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015, while the men’s program captured national titles in 1990 and 1996. The 2003-04 season was a huge success for Straub and his Huskers, as bowling competition was held at the NCAA level for the first time. Nebraska capped the season by winning the first-ever NCAA championship, rallying through the loser’s bracket to defeat Central Missouri State in the nationally televised final. Shannon Pluhowsky was named the MVP of the NCAA Championship. Straub then guided the Huskers to a second NCAA title in 2005, as Amanda Burgoyne was named the NCAA Championship MVP. Straub and his team captured the 2009 NCAA title as Husker Cassandra Leuthold earned Most Valuable Player honors for the tournament. He also led the Huskers to the 2013 NCAA championship, using a great all-around effort led by MVP Lizabeth Kuhlkin to defeat Vanderbilt 4.5 to 2.5. Most recently, Straub guided the Huskers to the 2015 NCAA championship that was played in front of an ESPN nationally televised audience. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin by a score of 4-2 at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, behind strong efforts by Kuhlkin and Julia Bond, who was named MVP of the tournament.

l 28

In 2016-17, Straub’s 20th season, his Huskers finished as the national runnerup after NU made the NCAA Championship match for the fifth-consecutive year. Straub was named National Tenpin Coaches Association Coach of the Year after leading Nebraska to four tournament wins in 2016-17 and helping NU to four more second-place finishes, including the NCAA Championship. For the second-consecutive season, Bond earned first-team All-America honors, while Gazmine Mason earned her third-straight third-team All-America award. Kelly Belzeski and Meghan Straub were both honorable-mention NTCA All-Americans for the Huskers in 2016-17. In the 14 years that the NCAA has sponsored bowling, Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for the NCAA Championship in every season. In addition to winning the award in 2017, Straub was honored as the NTCA Coach of the Year in 2005 and 2013. Straub has coached seven bowlers who have been tabbed for a total of nine NTCA Collegiate Player-of-the-Year awards, including Kim (Berke) Straub (1992), Diandra (Hyman) Asbaty (2000), Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Burgoyne (2007), Leuthold (2010) and most recently Kuhlkin in 2015. Straub has also coached four bowlers to NTCA Rookie-of-the-Year honors, including Berke (1989), Pluhowsky (2001), Baker (2005) and Leuthold (2007). Along with winning 10 national titles, Straub’s squads have not been ranked lower than seventh in the top 25 team rankings since becoming a varsity sport in 1997. Straub’s bowling history goes far beyond the University of Nebraska. A Lincoln native, Straub had an illustrious professional career, both locally and nationally. A member of the Nebraska Bowling Hall of Fame, Omaha Bowling Hall of Fame and the Lincoln Bowling Hall of Fame, Straub has gained more honors and titles than any other bowler from the state of Nebraska. His numerous local, state and national titles give proof that his success as a bowler and coach are mirrored by the success of his bowlers. Straub graduated from Kensington University with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. He and his wife Kim, a former four-time All-American at Nebraska and the 1992 National Collegiate Bowler of the Year, have one daughter, current Husker bowler Meghan.

Education: B.A. in psychology, University of Nebraska Family: Wife: Leanna; Sons: Jake and Carter HONORS & AWARDS •Seven National Titles (1999, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013, 2015) • 31 bowlers have made a combined 65 NTCA All-America teams • 41 bowlers have made a combined 75 NTCA All-Academic teams • 14 bowlers have been selected to national teams

Paul Klempa recently completed his 20th season as the Nebraska bowling assistant head coach, while his association with the program dates back to 1992. After a collegiate career in which he earned AllAmerica honors as a senior in 1994, Klempa remained in Lincoln and was hired as the Huskers’ assistant coach in 1997. During his tenure as a coach at Nebraska, Klempa has helped guide the Huskers to seven national championships - including back-to-back NCAA titles in 2004 and 2005, and NCAA championships in 2009, 2013 and most recently, 2015. Klempa has tutored numerous bowlers who earned All-America honors during their careers and 12 student-athletes who went on to represent various national teams. Klempa served as interim head coach for the Nebraska bowling team for much of the 2013-14 season, while head coach Bill Straub recovered from a medical issue. Klempa led the Huskers to a pair of tournament titles and a No. 2 national ranking. He also helped guide the Huskers to their 11th-straight NCAA Championship appearance. “I thought he did a great job,” Straub said. “He gives me a great supporting cast. It helps me think better when I need it. Paul didn’t have that option (that season). He had to make the main decisions on his own. Week after week, it is taxing.” “I think Coach grew more by having more responsibility,” Straub added. “He not only had his own duties, he had most of mine to boot. I think that is a growth period, and he performed admirably.” Klempa helped guide Nebraska to its fifth NCAA title in 2015. Liz Kuhlkin was named the National Collegiate Bowler of the Year, while Julia Bond was named the Most Outstanding Bowler in the NCAA Championship. In 2016-17, Klempa guided Nebraska to a national runner-up finish, as the Huskers made the NCAA championship match for the fifth-consecutive season. NU won four tournament titles in 2016-17 and finished second at four other events, including the NCAA Championship. Bond earned first-team All-America honors for the second-consecutive season, while Gazmine Mason earned her third-straight third-team All-America award. Kelly Belzeski and Meghan Straub were both honorable-mention NTCA All-Americans for the Huskers in 2016-17. In the 14 years that the NCAA has sponsored bowling, Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for the NCAA Championship in every season. A native of Johnstown, N.Y., Klempa graduated from Nebraska in 1994 with a degree in psychology. He owns several 300 games and 800 series in his decorated career and has represented Nebraska in the U.S. Open and is also a State Match Game champion. HUSKERS SHOOT FOR SIXTH NCAA TITLE IN 2018

As the 2017-18 season begins for the Nebraska bowling team, the Cornhuskers have their sights set on winning a sixth NCAA championship after consecutive second-place finishes the past two seasons. Bill Straub, the 2017 NTCA Coach of the Year, will lead the Huskers again this season. In his 21 years as head coach of the Huskers, Straub has earned NTCA Coach-of-the-Year honors three times and has led the Huskers to 10 national titles, including five NCAA championships. Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for every NCAA Championship since bowling became an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 2003-04. “The team is very young, but thankfully, it is loaded with skill and is very cohesive,” Straub said. “The team manages to stay heavily focused on development and performance. Potential is in place for 2017-18 to be an enjoyable season, one that is also hopefully rewarding and successful.” Paul Klempa, the assistant head coach, also returns for his 21st season. “I am excited to work this season with the fine student-athletes returning from last year’s team along with multiple very talented incoming players,” Klempa said. This 2017-18 team is composed of three returning AllAmericans in Kelly Belzeski, Julia Bond and Meghan Straub. The Huskers also return five letterwinners from last year’s team in Belzeski, Bond, Straub, Allison Morris and Raquel Orozco. Bond, a three-time All-American, led the Huskers last season with an average of 212, the seventh-highest single-season average in program history. She hopes to lead the Huskers to another championship after being named the NCAA Championship Most Outstanding Bowler when the Huskers won the title in 2015. As a l 32

co-captain this season, she hopes to become the eighth Husker in program history to be named a four-time All-American. “It has been a blast, but seems impossible that the years have passed so quickly, and that I am now one of the two oldest players on the team,” Bond said.“I take very seriously being appointed co-captain, and I will do all in my power to help continue the successes of Husker Bowling.” Honorable-mention All-Americans Belzeski and Straub also return this season ready to take on the competition. Belzeski was second on the team with an average of 203.8 last season, and finished first individually at a pair of tournaments, including the NCAA Championship where she posted an average of 217.6. She finished her junior season with the highest individual average at the NCAA Championship, leading Nebraska to the national runner-up finish. Straub notched a pair of top-five finishes last season on the way to a season average of 198.7. The trio of Bond, Belzeski and Straub likely have three of the five rotation spots on lockdown, with the final two positions up for grabs. A pair of sophomores, Orozco and Morris, return both starting and relief experience for the Huskers this season. Orozco spent much of last season in the starting lineup, and posted a strong average of 202.3 on the season, which ranks sixth all-time among Husker freshmen. Morris competed in three tournaments and averaged a score of 181.3 as a redshirt freshman. This season, sophomore Kelly Huddleston and redshirt freshman Estefania Prieto look to break into the starting lineup for the first time. Amanda Morgan, a sophomore transfer from Prairie View A&M also will be aiming for a spot on the Husker’s five-person rotation. Newcomers Michelle Guarro and Cassidy Ray also will add depth to the roster in their first season as Huskers.

HUSKERS The letterwinners, All-Americans and newcomers are all playing toward the goal of winning another National Championship. Nebraska must work to replace graduated seniors Gazmine Mason, Briana Zabierek and Alexandra Mosquera, who were featured in the Husker lineup for multiple seasons and were strong leaders both on and off the lanes. Mason was a three-time All-American for the Huskers and Zabierek was an honorablemention All-American in 2016. The Cornhuskers hope to continue their dominance off the lanes as well. Last seaon, 10 Huskers earned a total of 20 spots on the Nebraska Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll across the fall and spring semesters. The Huskers were also honored for their work in the community in 2017, as all 11 Husker bowlers were named to the Tom Osborne Citizenship Team. Nebraska begins its 2017-18 season at the Brunswick Bearcat Open, hosted by defending NCAA champion McKendree, the next weekend, Oct. 27-29. The Huskers will head to the Track Kat Klash in Houston in early November, and will wrap up the 2017 calendar year with the Warhawk Classic in Kenosha, Wis., Nov. 10-12. The spring semester schedule kicks off with the Mid-Winter Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., where the Huskers are defending champions, Jan. 12-14.

Kelly Belzeski earned All-America recognition after her performance in the 2016-17 season.

The month of February will be busy for the Huskers, beginning with another visit to Texas when the Big Red travels to Arlington for the Prairie View A&M Invitational, where NU has won fiveconsecutive editions. The Huskers will compete at the Crusader Classic in Chicago Feb. 9-11, before heading to the SFA Jacks Invite in Houston, Feb. 16-18. NU will bowl at the Mid-Missouri NCAA Invitational in Fulton, Mo., Feb. 24-25. The Huskers will return home to host the annual Big Red Invitational on March 2-4 at Sun Valley Lanes in Lincoln. NU will look to return to its winning ways at the tournament after finishing second last season. The event is free all weekend to fans and promotional activities and giveaways are scheduled. The Huskers will close the regular season with the Music City Classic March 16-18 in Nashville, Tenn. The 2018 NCAA Championship is scheduled for April 12-14 in St. Louis, Mo. Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for the tournament in each of the 14 years that the NCAA has sponsored bowling, and has reached the title match in each of the past five seasons.

Senior Julia Bond earned the status of All-American for the third time last season and was the NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Bowler in 2015.

SEASON REVIEW

2017-18 NEBRASKA BOWLING

NEBRASKA BOWLING HISTORY In its 20 years as a varsity sport, Nebraska has become one of the top programs in the nation. Nebraska Coach Bill Straub has guided the Huskers to unprecedented success, winning 10 national championships, including five NCAA titles since capturing the inaugural crown in 2004. Once bowling became an NCAA-sanctioned sport in 2003, the Huskers won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005 and captured another in 2009. The Huskers again added to their trophy case in 2013. After a runner-up finish in 2014, the Huskers stormed to their nation-leading fifth NCAA crown in 2015, behind National Tenpin Coaches Association Player of the Year Lizabeth Kuhlkin and NCAA Championship Most Valuable Bowler Julia Bond. With 98 tournament titles in 197 competitions through the 201617 campaign including national championship tournaments, Straub has created a dynamic foundation for success for Nebraska bowling. With a world-wide approach to recruiting, Nebraska bowlers have been wellrepresented in national and international competitions. Under Straub, 14 Husker bowlers have qualified for their national teams, including U.S. National Team members Shannon Pluhowsky, Diandra Asbaty (Hyman), Brenda Edwards, Kayla Johnson, Elise Bolton, Lizabeth Kuhlkin and most recently Julia Bond. Recent Huskers Danielle van der Meer (Netherlands), Valerie Calberry (Canada), Shalima Zalsha (Indonesia), Tan Yan Ling (Singapore), Andrea Ruiz (Colombia), Bethany Hedley (England) and Alexandra Mosquera (Colombia). While the Husker team accomplishments have been paramount, numerous bowlers have also enjoyed individual success. NU has had at least one All-American in each of the last 24 years, dating back to the bowling club program days. Since 1989, 31 Huskers have combined for a total of 65 All-America awards, while Kim Berke (1992), Diandra Hyman (2000), Shannon Pluhowsky (2001, 2004, 2005), Lindsay Baker (2006), Amanda Burgoyne (2007), Cassandra Leuthold (2010) and Lizabeth Kuhlkin (2015) were each chosen as the National Collegiate Bowler of the Year. Straub has been a visionary in the sport of college bowling, championing the sport through its club program days and was a natural to become Nebraska’s first varsity head coach in 1997. The first year was historic in several respects, but most important was granting of the first full scholarship in the sport’s history to Jennifer Daugherty, who went on to earn first-team All-America honors in both 1998 and 1999. College bowling has experienced rapid growth in recent seasons, as over 70 schools competed in the 2016-17 season. In 2002, the NCAA announced that bowling would become an NCAA-sanctioned sport, and legislation was approved on April 24, 2003, allowing for the first NCAA Championship in the spring of 2004. Since the NCAA Championship was initiated, NU has captured the title five times in 2004, 2005, 2009, 2013 and 2015 giving NU 10 national crowns in the sport. In the 14 seasons that the NCAA has sanctioned bowling, Nebraska is the only program to have qualified for the NCAA Championship in every season. Most recently, the Nebraska bowling team was crowned the 2015 NCAA champions at Tropicana Lanes in St. Louis, Mo. The Huskers defeated Stephen F. Austin, 4-2, for the crown. Bond was named the Most Valuable Bowler at the NCAA Championships, while Kuhlkin joined Bond on the alltournament team.

Lizabeth Kuhlkin was the 2015 NTCA Collegiate Bowler of the Year and won three NTCA All-America honors, in addition to leading Nebraska to two national championships.

UNIVERSITY SYSTEM PRESIDENT HANK

BOUNDS, PH.D

UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA PRESIDENT | 3RD YEAR SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI | 1991 On Jan. 12, 2015, the Board of Regents appointed lifelong educator Hank M. Bounds, Ph.D., as the seventh president of the University of Nebraska. Bounds began his tenure as president on April 13, 2015, bringing with him a demonstrated record of expanding opportunities for students, improving higher education outcomes and efficiencies, and building successful partnerships with policymakers, donors and business leaders. Bounds grew up on a small farm in rural Mississippi, where his family raised hogs and cattle and he hauled hay. His service in the Army National Guard helped him pay for college, and he earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Southern Mississippi and a doctorate from the University of Mississippi. Bounds has devoted his 25-year career to helping change students’ lives in the same way education opened doors in his own life. He began as a high school teacher, then rose to principal, superintendent and state superintendent before becoming Mississippi’s commissioner of higher education in 2009. In that role, he oversaw a complex system of eight public universities including research universities, regional universities, an academic health science center, historically black institutions, a law center, a school of veterinary medicine and 200 institutes and centers. Together the system enrolled 85,000 students, employed 26,000 faculty and staff, and operated with a combined annual budget of $4.5 billion, including $500 million in research and development. During every year of Bounds’ tenure as commissioner, student enrollment and degrees awarded by the institutions in the Mississippi system increased, by a total of 13.3 percent and 11.4 percent, respectively. He advocated with legislative leadership for improved faculty compensation and providing greater opportunities for students. He also provided oversight for private fundraising in excess of $250 million per year. Bounds worked with the Board of Trustees to implement a performance-based allocation model that distributed funds equitably and rewarded universities for operating efficiently and achieving attainment outcomes. He designed an efficiencies plan that saved more than $90 million, an internal audit function, and a comprehensive diversity initiative that led to increased diversity among Mississippi faculty, staff and students. Bounds also worked with partners to increase educational attainment in Mississippi, including a Center for Education Innovation focused on improving learning opportunities for disadvantaged children. Bounds created an office to foster relationships among university researchers, business and industry, and economic developers. He was tapped by the business community to chair a major statewide initiative to create an action plan to improve Mississippi’s competitive position. Bounds brings this experience to the University of Nebraska, which he believes can serve as a catalyst for change and growth in the lives of students and people in the state and around the world. He is working to make the University of Nebraska a giant in higher education—for the benefit of the state, the country and the world. Bounds holds faculty appointments in the College of Education and Human Sciences at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and in the Colleges of Education at the University of Nebraska at Omaha and the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He and his wife, Susie, are the parents of a son, Will, and a daughter, Caroline. They reside in Lincoln, Neb.

UNIVERSITY BOARD OF REGENTS The Board of Regents consists of eight voting members elected by district for six-year terms, and four non-voting student Regents, one from each campus, who serve during their tenure as student body president. The board supervises the general operations of the university, and the control and direction of all expenditures. The board also includes a corporation secretary who manages all records including agendas, minutes, notices, policies and bylaws. Those documents can be found on the web at nebraska.edu/board/. The board meets regularly, primarily in Lincoln but also in Omaha and greater Nebraska. Persons wishing to provide information to the board or to appear before it should contact: Corporation Secretary, University of Nebraska, Varner Hall, 3835 Holdrege, Lincoln, NE 68583.

BILL

MOOS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR | 1ST YEAR WASHINGTON STATE | 1973 Honor the past. Live the present. Create the future. Nine simple words that carry impressive significance and undeniable responsibility. Words that Nebraska’s new athletic director uses to lead his programs and set the tone for building champions in competition and in life. William H. (Bill) Moos was named NEBRASKA’S ATHLETIC DIRECTORS Nebraska’s Athletic Director on Oct. 1928-1876 — Allen R. Benton 15, 2017, and fully assumed those 1928-1931 — H.D. Gish 1932-1936 — Dana X. Bible responsibilities on Oct. 23. 1937-1942 — Lawrence McCeney “Biff” Jones Moos, who became the 15th athletic 1942-1947 — A.J. Lewandowski director in the history of the storied 1948-1953 — George “Potsy” Clark Cornhusker program, brings nearly 25 years 1954-1960 — J.W. “Bill” Orwig — Charles Miller & Joseph Soshnik 1961* of experience as an athletic director at 1962-1966 — W.H. “Tippy” Dye three Division I schools (Washington State, 1967-1992 — Bob Devaney Oregon, Montana) with him to Nebraska. 1993-2002 — Bill Byrne 2003-2007 — Steve Pederson More importantly, he brings an impressive 2007-2012 — Tom Osborne track record of success in building 2013-2017 — Shawn Eichorst outstanding programs, developing long2017-Present — Bill Moos term relationships, and for doing what *Interim Co-Directors is best for his schools, its fans and most importantly, its student-athletes. “When you name the top three, four, five athletic programs in the great positions as an athletic director, Nebraska is in that same breath,” Moos said at his introductory press conference at Memorial Stadium. “I want you to know that my motto has always been, in the 25 years I have been a Division I athletic director and it will be here too is very simple - honor the past, live the present, create the future.” Moos came to Lincoln after spending seven-plus years at Washington State (2010-17). He previously served 12 highly successful seasons as the athletic director at Oregon (1995-2007). During his time at his alma mater, Moos wasted little time in making his impact felt in Cougar Athletics, spearheading a department-wide rebranding effort with Nike while securing a 10-year, $35 million marketing rights agreement with IMG College.

l 54

In addition, the 2004 WSU Alumni Achievement Award winner gained Regents approval for a $130 million addition and remodel of Martin Stadium, featuring a remodeled press box with luxury seating, including suites, loge boxes and club room. Also included in the project was a state-of-the-art video board and an 80,000-square-foot football operations building that served as the stadium’s showpiece and opened in May 2014. As the dean of Pac-12 athletic directors, Moos was at the forefront of the conference’s procurement of a 12-year, $3 billion television contract with FOX and ESPN, a landmark agreement in college athletics. Under Moos’ direction, the Cougar Athletic Fund’s Annual Giving program saw an 81 percent increase in gifts while CAF donor members rose from nearly 4,000 to more than 7,500. Additional facility enhancements under Moos included a center-hung video board in Beasley Coliseum that was installed prior to the 2011-12 season, giving Cougar basketball one of the premier fan experiences in the conference. An indoor golf hitting facility was also completed in early 2013, and Lower Soccer Field underwent a major renovation making the venue TV-ready while also providing one of the best playing surfaces on the West Coast, along with the addition of lights and a new scoreboard. Other enhancements were made to the Moobery track facility, Bailey-Brayton Field, the basketball practice gym, Gibb Pool and the Simmelink Indoor tennis courts. In Moos’ seven years at WSU, Cougar student-athletes and coaches accounted for 805 academic all-conference selections, 130 all-conference accolades, 45 All-America honors and three Pac-12 Coach-of-the-Year honors. Moos served as Oregon’s director of athletics from July of 1995 to 2007. While at Oregon he oversaw a 17-sport athletic department that grew to national prominence during his tenure. Oregon’s annual athletic department budget grew from $18.5 million in his first year to more than $40 million by 2007, becoming 100 percent self-sufficient during that time. Under his direction the Duck Athletic Fund donor base increased from 4,930 to 12,290, resulting in an annual gifts increase from $4.1 million to $15.3 million. Moos initiated more than $160 million in facility improvements while at Oregon. Included in that was the $90 million Autzen Stadium renovation in 2002, which added 12,000 new seats, 32 new suites, a new Club at Autzen and a new press box to the stadium. In his 12 years, the Ducks ranked first in Pac-10 football attendance 11 times, reaching 100 percent capacity in each of those seasons. During Moos’ tenure, Oregon athletics captured 13 Pac-10 championships across six different sports. He increased opportunities for women by adding two intercollegiate programs, soccer and lacrosse, and negotiated an all-inclusive shoe and apparel contract with Nike, one of only 14 in the country at the time. From an academic standpoint during Moos’ tenure, Oregon student-athletes collected 722 academic all-conference selections, 34 Academic All-America selections, nine NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and one NCAA Top Ten Award. During his first stint as a collegiate athletic director at Montana (199095), Moos created an academic support program and hired its first athletic academic coordinator, developed a facility enhancement plan that created more than $4 million in improvements, and lifted the school’s fund-raising efforts to show a 300 percent increase in private and corporate gifts. Academically, Montana student-athletes were equally successful as the athletic department achieved a graduation rate 20 percent higher than the general university enrollment. Under Moos’ watch Montana garnered 269 academic allconference selections, five Academic All-Americans and two NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients. Moos began his athletic career as an athletic administrator in 1982 as assistant athletic director at Washington State. He also served as the school’s associate athletic director (1988-90). At Washington State, he was director of development for more than five years and associate director for nearly two years, supervising all external operations. Prior to that, he managed and owned private businesses in Washington and Oregon for eight years. He was a student assistant football coach at Washington State for the 1973 season, then spent part of 1974 in Washington, D.C., serving as a government intern. Raised on a wheat and cattle ranch in eastern Washington, Moos attended high school in Olympia when his father served in the governor’s cabinet. Moos earned his bachelor’s degree in history from WSU and was a three-year letterman in football before concluding his collegiate career by representing Washington State in the 1972 East-West Shrine All-Star Game in San Francisco. He served as co-captain on the Cougars’ 1972 squad and garnered first-team All-Pac-8 Conference honors. Moos and his wife Kendra have three daughters: Christa, Brittany and Kaiti; and two sons, Bo and Benjamin.
