PREPARATION. STRATEGY. PRACTICE.

T

he same things that lead to athletic success lead to student success— and to life success. Preparation. Strategy. Practice. These are the precursors to outcomes. To winning. To growing our team, our university, and our state. What happens in athletic competition translates to the classroom, the lab, and the community.

Nebraskans can be proud that their University is focused on life skills that last beyond a student’s time with us. We graduate more than 11,000 students each year, and we’re not just equipping them with an education—we’re building the character, work ethic, and resolve they’ll

need to succeed as parents, business owners, and community leaders.

Nebraska’s best asset is its people. That’s how we’re going to build our university. That’s how we’re going to build our team. That’s how we’re going to build our workforce. Thank you for your support of the Huskers and the University of Nebraska. Here’s to the future!

In 1984, Pavelka was elevated to the playby-play job for Husker football while still calling Nebraska basketball, in an 11-year tenure as voice of the Huskers that included two football national championships. After an 11-year absence, Pavelka returned as a Husker broadcaster for the 200607 men’s basketball season and was inducted into the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2019. Former Husker point guard Jake Muhleisen is in his third season as the analyst for Nebraska men’s basketball on the Husker Sports Network. A Lincoln native, Muhleisen was a four-year starter and three-year team captain for the Huskers under Barry Collier from 2001 through 2005. MEN’S BASKETBALL BY BEN McLAUGHLIN

NEW FACES EVERYWHERE Expectations were sky high for the Nebraska men’s basketball program a year ago, with three key seniors in Glynn Watson Jr., James Palmer Jr., Isaac Copeland Jr. and the program’s first NBA draft pick since 1999 – Isaiah Roby (2nd round, 45th overall pick, Detroit Pistons). However, injuries and inconsistent play led to a 19-17 record. The Huskers made it to the second round of the NIT, beating Butler 80-76 before having their season end with an 88-72 loss at TCU, marking the end of NU head coach Tim Miles’ seven-year tenure with the Cornhuskers. The 2019-2020 NU team can be summarized in one word - new.

This season, Nebraska will usher in a new staff, including Head Coach Fred Hoiberg. From 1995-2005, Hoiberg played in the NBA for the Indiana Pacers, the Chicago Bulls and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Upon retirement, Minnesota hired Hoiberg to a front-office position before he began his coaching career at Iowa State. In his five seasons, Hoiberg led Iowa State to four NCAA Tournament appearances and

back-to-back Big 12 Tournament titles in 2014 and 2015. The Chicago Bulls hired Hoiberg as head coach in June of 2015. He spent three seasons there, taking the Bulls to the playoffs in 2017. Hoiberg brought back former Nebraska Head Coach Doc Sadler as an assistant coach. Following his tenure at NU, Sadler spent a brief time as an assistant at Iowa State before becoming a head coach at Southern Mississippi

for five years. Armon Gates also returns to Lincoln for his second season as the only remaining coach from last year’s staff. Additionally, after spending the last four seasons as an assistant coach at St. John’s, Matt Abdelmassih joined Hoiberg’s staff in Lincoln. The roster has had just as much turnover as the staff. There is only one player on the current squad who appeared in a game for Nebraska last season. Thorir Thorbjarnarson played in 25 games for the Cornhuskers last year, making seven starts. After the injury to Isaac Copeland Jr., Thorbjarnarson played in 16 of Nebraska’s last 17 games. Dachon Burke Jr. was the only other player who was on the 2018-19 roster but had to sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. The new coaching staff used every avenue to compile the new roster. They brought in graduate transfers (Haanif Cheatham - Florida Gulf Coast and Matej

Kavas - Seattle), junior college transfers (Jervay Green - Western Nebraska CC and Cam Mack - Salt Lake CC), regular four-year university transfers (Shamiel Stevenson - Nevada; Derrick Walker - Tennessee; and Dalano Banton - Western Kentucky) and a sizeable freshman class; Akol Arop, Kevin Cross, Samari Curtis, Yvan Ouedraogo, Charlie Easley, Jace Piatkowski and Bret Porter. In early August, the team was able to spend 10 days abroad, touring and playing in Italy. The team went 4-0 on the trip in the cities of Rome, Florence and Como. While in Rome, the team visited coveted sights such as the Coliseum, Vatican City and the Pantheon. Nebraska defeated Stella Azzurra Academy 87-56, led by Jervay Green’s 15 points. The team then bussed to Florence for two matchups with BC Silute, a Lithuanian pro team. The Huskers came out on top in

game one, 83-58. Dachon Burke and Haanif Cheatham each finished with a team-high 20 points. The rematch was much closer, with Nebraska holding on for a 73-70 win the following evening. Freshman Samari Curtis led the Huskers with 13 points. The final stop for the team was Lake Como, where they enjoyed a tour of the lake, as well as a tour of Lugano, Switzerland. In the final game of the trip, Nebraska took care of Italian Select 84-62. Freshman walk-on Charlie Easley scored 15 points to lead the way for the Cornhuskers. The Huskers open their season with an exhibition game on Wednesday, Oct. 30, against Doane University at Pinnacle Bank Arena. The official start to the season will come about a week later

MATEJ KAVAS 6-8 // SENIOR // GUARD LJUBLJANA, SLOVENIA Nebraska’s roster will feature five international players this season. One of them is graduate transfer Matej Kavas. Kavas comes to Lincoln from Ljubljana, Slovenia, after spending three seasons at Seattle University. Kavas totaled nearly 1,000 points in his 84 games with the Redhawks. The 6-8 sharpshooter will instantly become Nebraska’s biggest three-point weapon this season. Kavas enters the season with the 6th best three-point shooting percentage in the country at 44.7%.

PLAYERS TO WATCH DACHON BURKE JR. 6-4 // JUNIOR // GUARD ORANGE, N.J. Dachon Burke is one of just two players on the roster from last season. Although Burke had to sit out due to the NCAA transfer rules, he will be a key cog in the Husker backcourt in 2019-2020. Burke spent two seasons at Robert Morris University before making his way to Lincoln. As a sophomore, “DB” led the Colonials in scoring with 17.6 ppg, and added nearly 6 rebounds, three assists and two steals per game. Burke is an electric player who plays with great energy, and will be one of the vocal leaders on Nebraska’s new team.

CAM MACK 6-2 // SOPHOMORE // GUARD AUSTIN, TEXAS One of the highlights of the offseason for Nebraska was a commitment from the No. 3-rated junior college player in the country. 6’2 guard Cam Mack, once a St. John’s commit, said yes to the Huskers to help replace 4-year starter Glynn Watson Jr. at point guard. Mack began his career at Stephen F. Austin before transferring to Salt Lake CC last season. Last season for the Bruins, Mack had five 30-point games and one 40-point game in which he buried 6 three-pointers.

Q&A WITH FRED HOIBERG

SETTING THE STAGE FOR SUCCESS 28

HUSKER SPORTS

Winter 2019

MEN’S BASKETBALL Greg Sharpe: Let’s start with Italy. How was that trip and did it kind of accomplish what you hoped that it would? Fred Hoiberg: Well, Italy was a great trip for us, and the biggest reason why is the fact that all of our new players got to spend quality time together. We’ve got 14 guys who’ve never really played with each other, and the only two guys who have really been in the Big Ten are Thor Thorbjarnarson and Dachon Burke, and that was from the sideline with the sit-out year, so there’s so many new faces, so many unknowns with this group. I think we left Italy as a team, and that was the most important part to me. GS: With Italy and with the practice time you’ve had with this group, what have you learned about them? FH: Well I do think it’s a group that goes out there and competes. We’re still trying to teach how to play and how to fight through adversity. It’s one of those things, especially when you have so many new faces, sometimes you revert back to old habits, especially when you don’t have the trust level with the guy next to you at this point. So those are the big things that we’re trying to get across to our guys. Not just when things are going well. That can’t be the only time we’re out there performing. You have to be able to deal with adversity. You know it’s still a work in progress with that and probably will be even into the season, but we’ve got to find a way to go out there and battle through adversity better. GS: When you got here, there wasn’t much of a non-conference schedule put together, so I don’t know how much choice you really had in piecing this together, but what do you want to accomplish during the month of November?

FH: Well, obviously it’s an important part of the season, for everybody. You want to go out there and set the tone for when you start the conference games, which you play 20, so you’re going to be grinding it out 20 times once the conference season starts so I like our schedule. We’re going to be playing at Creighton, which will be a top 20 team, playing at Georgia Tech in the ACC on the road. We’re playing three quality games in the Cayman Islands, and we’ve got some other teams that will come in here and give us a big challenge, so for us it’s about going out there and hopefully setting the tone for what we need to do to have a successful conference season. GS: You haven’t been through this before in the Big 12, but you’ll have some conference games in December, and it breaks it up a little bit. Any thoughts on that? FH: In the schedule that we got, it’s tough. We play at Indiana on a Friday night, then we have to turn around and play Purdue, who runs more sets than anybody in the league, on a Sunday afternoon. So that’s an NBA type thing right there, where you have very little prep time going into your conference season. But, you know, we all play 20, and it’s the schedule that we got, so we have to go out there and prepare the best we can, but we have two really difficult challenges. Indiana’s going to have a very good team this year to go out and start on the road, which I kind of like going out there and starting on the road, seeing what you’re made of. GS: Cam Mack didn’t get a chance to go to Italy with you, but by all accounts this is a young guy that can be pretty helpful to this team, don’t you think? FH: We want to play with great pace with everything we do, and Cam certainly fits

that. So for Cam, it’s hard, not getting the reps that the rest of the team did. He’s behind right now at this point in the season, but he picks things up very quickly. He’s a jet with the ball and a guy that’s a very willing passer. GS: Fan support. Pinnacle Bank Arena is sold out for the upcoming season, I don’t know if you’ve been able to sense it when you’ve been around visiting with boosters and that type of thing, but there’s a lot of buzz out there for you. FH: I’m really excited. The overwhelming support we have has been unbelievable. Whether we’re going out to a dinner or having fans come up to us and talk to us about the excitement or Memorial Stadium on a Saturday afternoon. We’re

getting people coming up to us and saying how pumped they are for the season, and then you see that every ticket has been sold already, even the Opening Night with zero tickets available. It’s one of the big reasons why I think we have a chance to be a consistent winner here is because of our great fan support and because of our great facilities. But, it’s been off the charts. This team lost a lot, off last year’s roster with Roby, with Palmer, with Watson, and with Copeland, and then you lost some very good role players as well. There’s a lot of things we have to work on to get us playing at a high level, but the biggest thing we are looking for is to go out and compete and put a product on the floor that our fans can be proud of.

ILLINOIS

NEED TO KNOW

» Despite the Illini setting the school record for losses in a season last year (21), hopes are high for Illinois as eight of the top nine scorers return from last year’s team, which ranked fourth in the Big Ten in scoring. » Ayo Dosunmu came to Illinois as a five-star recruit last year, then led the Illini in scoring with 13.8 points per game while adding 3.3 assists. After briefly considering entry into the NBA Draft, Dosunmu returns for his sophomore year. » Illinois also returns Giorgi Bezhansishvili in the post after a successful freshman year. The native of the nation of Georgia was a pleasant surprise last season with 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. His defense was suspect, though, as he did foul out 10 times last year. » The Illini should improve in the post with the addition of five-star recruit Kofi Cockburn. The native of Jamaica is the highest-ranked recruit to join Illinois since Meyers Leonard. » While the Fighting Illini look ready to compete in the Big Ten offensively, they’ll need to improve in two critical areas – defense and rebounding. Illinois was worst in the league in both categories.

» If Indiana is to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2016, they’ll face the unenviable task of replacing their top two scorers – forward Juwan Morgan (15.5 points per game, 8.2 rebounds per game) and guard Romeo Langford (16.5 ppg and 4.5 rpg). » The good news is the Hoosiers return five of their top seven scorers, led by guard Devonte Green, who tallied 9.4 points per game as a sub last season. He finished last year strong, scoring 15.4 points per game down the stretch. » Indiana added Joey Brunk as a graduate transfer to bolster their post play. Brunk shot 61.5 percent while scoring 7.6 points and 3.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore for the Butler team that lost in the first round of the NIT at Nebraska. » Another notable addition to the Indiana front court is Trayce Jackson-Davis, the reigning Indiana Mr. Basketball and a McDonald’s All-American. His father, Dale, played for the NBA’s Pacers. » The Hoosiers need to improve their three-point shooting. Indiana ranked 13th in the Big Ten and 312th in the country while hitting just 31.2 percent of their shots behind the arc. It might improve by the subtraction of Morgan and Langford, who hit just 28.2 percent of their 3’s.

» Iowa rebounded from a nightmarish 4-14 showing in the Big Ten in 2017-18 to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in three years. The Hawkeyes pushed into the second round of the tournament before losing in overtime to Tennessee. » Iowa rode a high-powered offense to the Big Dance. They led the Big Ten by scoring 78.3 points per game, which ranked 47th in the country. The Hawkeyes ranked third in the Big Ten in field-goal percentage, 3-point percentage and free-throw percentage. » Two big losses could hinder Iowa’s pursuit of a second straight NCAA bid. All-Big Ten forward Tyler Cook graduates after scoring 14.5 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. Then, senior guard Jordan Bohannon, who set the school record with 264 3-pointers made last year, had hip surgery in the offseason and is expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season. » Patrick McCaffrey, a top-100 national recruit and the top recruit in the state of Iowa, becomes the third McCaffrey brother to sign on to play for father Fran. His older brother, Connor, scored 4.4 points per game and may be one of the first candidates to fill for Bohannon. » Former Husker Bakari Evelyn could factor in this year after joining Iowa as a graduate transfer from Valparaiso. Evelyn played 18 games at NU in 2015-16, then played 64 games for the Crusaders the last two years.

He holds an 80-92 record with Maryland, which includes four NCAA Tournament appearances. » The Terrapins lose just one key player off last year’s team – big man Bruno Fernando. The 6-10 power forward was drafted 34th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft after averaging a double-double in his sophomore season with 13.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game. » Anthony Cowan Jr. returns to lead the Terps in his senior season. The 6-0 point guard has scored 1,375 points in his career and averaged over 15 points per game in each of his last two seasons. The only other double-digit scorer returning is 6-10 sophomore forward Jalen Smith, who averaged nearly 12 points and 7 rebounds per contest in his freshman season. » Maryland was the fifth youngest team in the country in 2018-19 and will look to replace Fernando’s presence in the paint with freshmen Makhi Mitchell and Chol Marial. The 6-foot-8 wing paced the team with 19.9 points per game, which was second-best in the conference. He took on an increased scoring load last season, putting up 4.4 more points per game than his sophomore average of 15.5. » Senior forward Mike Watkins helps Stevens form a strong front-court attack and defense. Watkins averaged 7.8 points and 7.4 rebounds last year, highlighted by an 18-point, 16-rebound performance against Colgate and a 10-point, 12-rebound game against Illinois. » The most notable departure is that of Josh Reaves, who was picked up by the Dallas Mavericks on a two-way contract this summer. Last season, Reaves set the tone defensively for Penn State, averaging 2.5 steals per game, the best mark in the conference. He also chipped in 10.6 points, 5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. » Rising sophomore Myles Dread will need to perform offensively for the Nittany Lions. PSU was dealt a blow after Rasir Bolton transferred after one year in State College. The tandem averaged a combined 19.9 points per game last season, with Bolton finishing second behind Stevens in scoring average with 11.6 points per game. » Head Coach Pat Chambers has compiled a 127-140 record in eight years in Happy Valley. » The Badgers wrapped up the 2018-19 season with a 23-11 record but were upset by 12-seed Oregon in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Wisconsin has been a mainstay in the Big Dance. When they missed the tournament in 2017-18, it snapped a streak of 18 straight seasons reaching the field of 64. » Greg Gard enters his fifth season as head coach of the program – he holds an 80-47 record in that time. Gard preaches defense – UW ranked ninth nationally in scoring defense last season. » The Badgers roster took a big hit in the off-season due to the graduation of two senior forwards: Ethan Happ and Khalil Iverson. Happ was a Second Team All-American in his senior season, averaging a double-double with over 17 points and 10 rebounds per game. » Wisconsin returns plenty of experience in the backcourt with junior guards Brad Davison and D’Mitrik Trice. Both players averaged double-figure scoring in their sophomore seasons. Fellow junior Nate Reuvers brings a versatile scoring threat – at 6-11, Reuvers averaged 8 points per game and was a threat from deep, connecting on 38 percent of his three-pointers. » Newcomers to the Badgers’ roster include redshirt freshman Joe Hedstrom, true freshman Tyler Wahl and Ohio State transfer Micah Potter.

BY JEFF GRIESCH

After a season of learning from the school of hard knocks, close calls and an unprecedented number of narrow losses, a more experienced Nebraska women’s basketball team plans to “Bring IT” in 2019-20.

Last season, Nebraska featured four freshmen who combined for the most points (893) by a group of Husker freshmen since 1981-82. The youth movement provided promise for the future, but the Huskers lost 10 games by six points or less on their way to a 14-16 season. The Huskers displayed growth throughout the season, notching a 9-9 Big Ten mark that included three wins by six or fewer points from Jan. 20 to the end of the season. The 2019-20 Huskers feature threeyear starters in All-Big Ten guard Hannah Whitish and senior wing Nicea Eliely. They also bring back experienced junior starters Kate Cain and Taylor Kissinger along with a sophomore class that

features explosive talent in Sam Haiby, Leigha Brown and Ashtyn Veerbeek. In all, Nebraska returns its top seven scorers from a year ago. Although Nebraska must replace departed senior Maddie Simon (6.8 ppg, 3.1 rpg), it also returns sophomore starter Kayla Mershon, fifth-year senior point guard Kristian Hudson and senior forward Grace Mitchell, while adding Australian U19 National Team forward Isabelle Bourne and fellow freshmen Trinity Brady and Makenzie Helms. “We feel excited and optimistic about the season, as we work to build on lessons learned last year and throughout the off-season,” Coach Amy Williams said. “Returning all but one player and adding some talented newcomers has

led to the optimism and expectations we have for ourselves.” Last year, Nebraska went 3-10 in games decided by two possessions, and the Huskers believe they let losses happen because of a lack of urgency. That understanding led to the team’s 2019-20 mantra “Bring IT.” The Huskers are asking themselves to practice and play with heightened intensity and emotion every time they take the court. They are also committed to “Invest Together” to increase their trust in each other on and off the floor. “Our foreign tour this summer provided some incredible once-in-alifetime experiences and kick-started our team cohesiveness and understanding of each other,” Williams said. “We were also able to address and work on some specific areas of concern such as pace of play and rebounding.” Williams, the Big Ten Coach of the Year after leading the Huskers to the 2018 NCAA Tournament, hopes to lead

Nebraska back to the postseason in 2020. Whitish, Eliely, Cain and Kissinger were key players in Nebraska’s trip to the Big Dance in 2018. Whitish was a second-team All-Big Ten choice in 2018 and an honorable-mention pick in 2019. The 5-9 guard led the Big Red in scoring (10.1 ppg) and assists (4.3 apg) for the second straight season in 2019, and is just 34 points from 1,000 and 37 assists from 400 in her career. She needs five three-pointers to become the third Husker with 200 career threes. The 6-1 Eliely has started 84 career games and had a career-high 54 steals, while averaging 7.9 points per game as a junior. One of the Big Ten’s top defenders, Eliely will be key in helping improve a defense that allowed 70.1 points per game in 2019. Cain, a 6-5 junior, joins Eliely as a defensive anchor. Cain carries 179 career blocks after setting the school season record with 100 rejections as a

She helped the Huskers average 72.4 points – 3.6 more points per game than 2018. “Overall, I am incredibly proud of the growth of our upperclassmen in leadership,” Williams said. “They have been focused and driven to ensure that this team is invested.” While those four Huskers may provide the most experience for Nebraska, Brown, Haiby, Veerbeek and Mershon supply the ingredients for the most growth. Haiby was NU’s No. 2 scorer (10.0 ppg) while playing 21 minutes per game. She also led Nebraska with 106 free throw attempts and will look to put even

more pressure on the opposition as a sophomore. “Playing with a consistent sense of urgency has been a focus for Sam this offseason,” Williams said. “We have also seen a commitment to work on the consistency of her perimeter shot, and she is shooting with more confidence.” The 6-1 Brown showed moments of explosiveness as a freshman. She was Nebraska’s No. 3 scorer (9.6 ppg) despite playing less than 19 minutes per contest. She had an outstanding off-season, averaging a team-best 19.7 points on NU’s three-game tour of Europe. Her toughness and leadership could be driving forces for Nebraska’s growth. “Leigha has been attacking things with a different mindset since the end of last season,” Williams said. “She has a different level of intensity and a different confidence about her.”

A three-year starter at point guard, Whitish led the Huskers in scoring and assists for the second straight season as a junior in 2018-19, averaging 10.1 points and 4.3 assists. A two-time All-Big Ten selection, Whitish needs just 34 points to reach 1,000 in her career and 37 assists to reach 400. One of Nebraska’s most explosive scorers as a sophomore, Brown averaged 9.6 points in just 18.9 minutes per contest as a true freshman in 2018-19. Brown showed the ability to score at all three levels, and set up teammates to score. One of Nebraska’s most hard-nosed players, Brown had a strong off-season and was NU’s leading scorer (19.7 ppg) on a threegame summer tour of Europe.

Q&A WITH AMY WILLIAMS

LEANING ON VETERAN LEADERSHIP 70

HUSKER SPORTS

Winter 2019

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL Matt Coatney: It’s got to feel good having most of your roster with at least a year of experience? Amy Williams: We’re really excited. It’s been interesting just to kind of watch how we can advance and progress just at a different pace when you have so many returners. It’s been fun to see some leadership coming from those returning players, and I think it’s made life way easier on the three incoming freshmen. MC: As young as you were last year, you still managed to finish sixth in the very tough Big Ten Conference, but you missed the NCAA Tournament. How hungry are your players to get back to the Big Dance this season? AW: When you lose 10 games by two possessions or less, it’s very easy for every one of those returning players to look back and think, ooh, if we could have this possession back or that possession back, we may have been dancing. I think it’s done a great job of instilling in our players the value in each possession and the sense of urgency that you have to have for each possession. MC: Your team had a really fantastic trip to Europe this summer. Three games in Italy and Spain and a lot of great experiences for your players. How do you see that summer trip to Europe impacting the upcoming season? AW: What an amazing trip. We are so just blessed that we were able to have that experience. Experiencing that culture and spending that time really connecting as a team and just those shared experiences is just a way of really bringing your team together. For that I am incredibly grateful. MC: Let’s take a look at the team and let’s start with your senior class. It’s four deep this season, with two, Hannah Whitish and

Nicea Eliely, who have combined for 163 starts in their careers. How much have those two meant to this program since you became coach? AW: Obviously, they have been staples in our lineup since their freshman year, and I think they’ve shown a lot of growth over their first three years. They are incredibly motivated heading into their final season wearing a Husker uniform to really try to get over the hump. We’ve seen some things out of them this off-season and leadership roles and really just finding ways to try and improve their game. MC: You’ve got a pair of juniors in Kate Cain and Taylor Kissinger who are matchup problems for other teams – Cain as an imposing 6-foot-5 presence in the paint and Kissinger as one of the most accurate threepoint shooters in the country. What can fans expect out of those two this season? AW: Well I think the biggest thing is both of those two look more physically conditioned, and they have been moving better on the basketball court heading into their junior years. I think they both have really committed in that area. It’s helped with confidence. We talked often about Taylor Kissinger and the very unique skill set she has to be able to go to her shot very quickly and from deep range. She has such a high release. And Kate Cain right now is playing with a lot of confidence and really being more aggressive. One thing we stressed this off-season is we didn’t feel like she got near enough free-throw attempts a year ago. She’s worked hard to become a better shooter, and we want to showcase that a little more by having her attack the basket. MC: You really had to lean on last year’s freshman class right out of the gate. Such an impressive group that are now all sophomores. Let’s start with Leigha Brown. I just think Leigha is ready to blossom and have a huge season.

Winter 2019

HUSKER SPORTS

71

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL AW: Leigha, I feel like has really come back this off-season with a different mentality. She’s been very focused. You can see the intensity on every rep, every drill. So that’s been fun to watch. She can score in a lot of different ways. She also has become more consistent from behind the arc. All those things are going to be good to have that scoring punch. MC: Sam Haiby showed that she could get to the rim when needed. What can fans expect out of her this season? AW: Sam is working extremely hard to get a little more consistency with the perimeter shot. I think she can be a very dangerous player. You know she was our second leading scorer a year ago, and now returning back with being able to really expand on that and be more consistent, she could have a breakout sophomore year. MC: You got great production out of two freshman forwards last season – Kayla Mershon and Ashtyn Veerbeek. They are both different kind of performers, but they impact the game whenever they are on the floor. How important are they to Nebraska’s success this season? AW: They are crucially important, and the reason why is that we know as a team that our rebounding efforts are where we have the best chance to really make improvements. Both of those young ladies are capable of increasing their production with rebounding. MC: You’ve got another impressive freshman class coming in this season. I want to talk about Isabelle Bourne. Izzy has played a lot of international ball with

72

HUSKER SPORTS

Winter 2019

the under-19 Australian National Team and did very well in the World Cup this summer. She seems to be very versatile for a 6-foot-2 player? AW: I think she has played at a very high level, and high-level competition, highlevel training, so we feel her transition to the college game could be a little more smooth just from those experiences. She has an ability to really listen and pick things up really quickly. MC: Your other two freshmen are guards who have impressive credentials also. What can fans expect from Makenzie Helms and Trinity Brady? AW: Makenzie Helms is really working back into things after some injuries. She sees the floor incredibly well and is a really good playmaker. Trinity Brady has really impressed our staff with her defensive ability right away, and once again, another kid that learns and picks things up really quickly. MC: You’ve got a really attractive schedule again this season, but it all opens up with a Wednesday game, November 6, at high noon against Alabama A&M. There will be a Life Skills Sportsmanship Pep Rally that morning before the game for third through eighth graders around the area. How did this all come together? AW: We’re really excited about the work that our staff has put in to try and organize something like this. We are consistently looking at ways to try and connect our athletes to the young people in our community. What an incredible way for us to share our program.
