Employment Opportunity: Accountant - Permanent Full Time

Overview: The Foothills Research Institute (fRI) is accepting applications for the position of Accountant. fRI is a not-for-profit research corporation located in Hinton, Alberta. A leader in developing innovative science for land and resource management, fRI develops and disseminates science-based knowledge and tools to a community of diverse and actively engaged partners. The institute is based in the resource community of Hinton, Alberta nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, 20 minutes from Jasper National Park. Through new agreements and understandings expansion continues into all parts of Alberta, as well as, nationally and internationally. For more information please visit: www.foothillsri.ca Reporting to the general manager, the accountant is the senior financial resource for the institute and will work closely with all fRI staff and program leads.

Job Duties: 1.     

Year End Procedures and Annual Audit, Budget, Financial Records and Reports Compilation of year end financial statements; Budget allocations reconciled to work plan submissions/approvals; Year end reconciliations to work plan and reallocation calculations; Capitalization schedules and related journal entries for capital asset purchases and dispositions; Organize year end audit.

Financial Reporting and Controls Communicate with program leads regarding budgets, invoice approvals and contracts, etc.; Review and update financial policies and procedures; Communicate with the company treasurer on various matters as needed; Prepare financial reports for review by the board of directors, general manager and program leads.

Monthly Financial Reports and Reconciliations Financial reconciliations of various accounts, including journal entries; Budget variance reports on a per project basis; Bank reconciliations for all funds;

Records Management Maintenance and control of books and records, ensure secure location, back up weekly; Maintenance and control of an accounts payable system; Issuance of accounts payable checks, electronic payments and maintenance of related bank check registers; Filing of quarterly GST returns; Issuance of required invoices for revenue related programs; Maintenance and control of an accompanying accounts receivable journal; Tracking of various capital assets; Preparation of various employment, consulting and funding contracts; Maintenance of a financial filing system as it relates to budgets, accounts payable, accounts receivable and other correspondence relating to the administration of staff, financial contracts and agreements.

     

5. Human Resources  Maintenance and control of a payroll system and the preparation of payroll, records of employment, T4’s and T4 summary report to Revenue Canada;  Administer the group benefit plan;  Filing of Workers Compensation Board year-end returns and future cost projections

Qualifications:      

5+ years accounting experience with an accounting designation (CA, CGA, or CMA) Extensive equivalent experience will be considered including candidates who are in the final stages of obtaining a designation Experience with fund accounting and large not-for-profit organizations ($5 million+) Experience with QuickBooks or similar accounting software Excellent organizational and communication skills Commitment to providing high quality service and being client-centered

Supervision: The role requires the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. It is also important to be able to work in a dynamic, energetic team environment which includes participating on team-based projects. There are no supervisory responsibilities for this position, however direction, advice and mentoring of junior financial and administration staff is required. The position will report directly to the general manager but will work closely on a daily basis with all fRI program leads.

Physical Demands: The position will work extensively with computers. Over 75% of work time will require intense visual concentration. Work related travel is minimal.

Salary: Salary is based upon the level of education and previous experience of the successful candidate. The regular work week is 37.5 hours and includes three weeks of paid annual leave. Small amounts of overtime are expected. fRI provides a comprehensive benefits package and an RRSP matching program.
