Communications and Extension Program Science Communications Specialist Communications and Extension Program Lead Permanent Full-time (37.5hrs/week). The role is subject to a three month probationary period. Hours are 8am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday. This is a new position. Salary will be commensurate with experience. May 15, 2015

Are you a seasoned communications specialist with a passion for science? Do you have a background in science and a natural ability to communicate? Either way the Foothills Research Institute (fRI) is looking for you! This is a new opportunity to shape our science and research coverage, playing a key role in a small but multifaceted team. We are looking for someone with a background in communications, science, or related field, who has enthusiasm for science communications and keen interest in natural resource management.

Purpose/Position Overview: The Science Communications Specialist must rapidly discover and interpret information from what can be a board range of scientific research, communicating it to target audiences through a variety of established communication channels. The role requires fastidious attention to detail as well a commitment to getting things right the first time. It is imperative that the Science Communications Specialist produce accessible and engaging content quickly while communicating the subtleties and uncertainties of scientific information in an accurate, compelling and hyperbole-free way. The Science Communications Specialist will be a self-starter with demonstrated skills in multi-tasking, an appetite for learning, a healthy respect for deadlines and equal doses of both enthusiasm and energy. Understanding the process of communicating science as well as the technology and mediums used to reach target audiences is essential. The Science Communications Specialist should be comfortable communicating science and research results in a non-advocacy environment.


Position Duties and Tasks: 90% Communicate the work being done by fRI and highlight the achievements of our core research programs, associations, and partners:                  

Assist with various communications, knowledge transfer and demonstration initiatives:    

Connect with researchers (internal and external) to develop a network of scientific contacts; Develop and manage a comprehensive editorial calendar; Research target audiences and relevant communication channels; Identify high-interest stories from the work of fRI and its partners; Produce communication materials in a range of styles (print, video, audio, web-based, etc.) and disseminate through suitable communication channels; Research, write, and edit content including extension/technical notes for specific programs and projects; Coordinate content contributions from programs and associations; Manage fRI’s written style guide including a comprehensive glossary of terms; Implement and manage a multi-contributor blog and ensure content is contributed on a regular basis; Ensure program and project information on the website is accurate and complete; Select published content to be featured in key website modules; Edit website copy as required; Provision content for fRI’s social media platforms; Write, direct, and produce new media projects (video, podcasts, etc.); Develop visuals that complement communication initiatives (infographics, maps, etc.); Contribute to and maintain a secure and searchable digital asset management library (images, and video), creating and maintaining metadata as required; Cover fRI events and activities producing video, photos, and other materials that can be used to develop communication materials; Manage fRI’s client relationship management software and distribute e-newsletters, bulletins, feature articles, etc. as required; and Stay up to date with developments in natural resource management;

Plan conferences, workshops, information sessions; Develop, edit and distribute other resource material; Promote knowledge transfer initiatives; and, Evaluate and report on communications and knowledge transfer initiatives;

Other duties as approved by the Communications & Extension Program Lead:      

Participate in meetings; Serve on committees and working groups; Prepare quarterly and annual work plans; Maintain and update knowledge management documents; Contribute to and draft quarterly and annual program reports; and, Complete other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Education:  Certificate, Diploma, or Degree related to science/communication OR significant experience in science communications in a professional context. Technology:

Skills/Expertise:

Passion for communicating science; Understanding of scientific networks and experience of networking within the research community; Working knowledge of land and natural resource management philosophies, policies, and legislation; Working knowledge of Alberta’s natural resource and research community; Ability to analyze articles, scientific papers, reports, and scientific data; Ability to quickly absorb new and complex information; Skilled in communicating science and research results in a non-advocacy environment; Ability to use a variety of tools and technology to create and distribute communication products; Experience with graphic design and editing of audio/video; Excellent written and spoken English; Experience writing for the web. Experience writing for a general audience; Ability to relate courteously and effectively with program staff, contractors, partners, and stakeholders; Experience working in a deadline driven environment; A naturally collaborative team player; Excellent problem-solving and project management skills; Ability to make independent sound judgments; and A self starter.

 

3-5 years related experience preferred. Valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (travel is required).

Scope: The Science Communications Specialist must work effectively with all programs, associations, partners, and stakeholders to achieve effective communication and knowledge transfer. An annual work plan will be developed in collaboration with the Communications and Extension Program Lead. Activities, issues or problems not identified in the work plan will be referred to the supervisor. Support outside the scope of the position must be approved by the Communications and Extension Program Lead.

Supervision: This position reports to the Communications and Extension Program Lead. Where appropriate, work will be reviewed by the General Manager and/or the Land-use Knowledge Network Program Lead. This position has no direct reports but may over-see contracts with various service providers.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office environment. Field work is needed for certain projects. Use of a computer, sometimes for long periods of time, is required. The position is based at fRI’s head office in Hinton, Alberta.

Portfolio: Candidates selected for an interview will be required to present a portfolio of work that showcases their skills and abilities relative to this role.
