An Introduction My name is Aniruddha Gupte and I have recently completed a Masters degree in Industrial Design at the Designskolen Kolding, Denmark. Prior to coming to Denmark I have completed a professional diploma in Product and Interface design from Srishti School of Art Design and Technology, Bangalore. During my time as a student and as a professional, I have overseen various aspects of design projects. I’ve been involved in research, brain storming and ideation, concept generation, prototyping, fabrication and even marketing. My design ideology is constantly being moulded as I try my hand at different genres of work. I believe in utilitarian and long lasting products for the use and welfare of the masses. My travels have made me highly fascinated by the cross-pollination of design ideas. An object of daily use in a remote village could easily be the seed to the next big design breakthrough. This portfolio is a compilation of interesting projects I have completed over the last few years. I hope they can give you a perspective to my journey as a designer and person.

Tesselamp (2014, Academic Project, 12 weeks)
This product was conceptualized keeping in mind the rising ‘Maker Movement’. It is an attempt to create a synergy of cocreation between the maker and the designer and bluring away those roles. The end users may choose at which point in the birth of the product they want to participate at. The customer can decide whether to buy a digital design template and self fabricate, pick and choose a combination of pre-cut parts, or just buy a flat packed lamp and assemble it at home. Taking into considerations the values of the ‘Maker Movement’, the wastage of material is kept to a minimum when making the Tesselamp. The parts are such that they tessellate when laid out on the surface they are to be cut from. The larger the volume of production is, the more viable it will be.

Divideable Binocular: Bi2
Academic Project
(2014, Personal project)
I started work on the concept of a modular binocular back in 2011 as an academic project introducing us to a professional workflow to designing a commercial product. Having owned a binocular and used it for bird watching, hiking, cricket matches and concerts, I realized firsthand how often I had to pass my instrument around among friends. It’s always the finer aspects of the outdoors such as path finding, birdlife, geographical formations etc that hook young hikers for life and in turn teach them the value of the outdoors. When on the move such opportunities are only fleeting glimpses that require optical instruments to fully appreciate. Most first time hikers do not yet possess such optics. By the time you unstrap yours and pass it to them, the moment is gone. My brief was to design a modular binocular with the universal gestural quality of sharing. It was to be a general use instrument. As it was detachable it would have to have individual focus on both cylinders and a high depth of field. I reworked this project recently, keeping to the initial brief but reworking on the aesthetics, ergonomics and mechanism of the product utilizing the knowledge I gained in the 4 years since I first conceived it.

Masters Project: Synthesizing Solutions (2016, Academic Project, work in progress)
In collaboration with:
How many of us truly know what happens to the plastic products we hand over for recycling? In Denmark especially, the plastic industry is barely visible with a majority of the processes being outsourced. Plastic may be a recyclable material in theory but the ground reality is different. Most plastic manufactures refuse to use revitalized postconsumer plastic pellets due to consistency issues. These issues arise from the difficulty in sorting the innumerable polymers of plastic. The versatility of plastic is both a boon and bane.
My Masters project looks at making the sorting of postconsumer plastic into a playful, educational and rewarding experience.
Academic Project
The long term goal of this project would be to make the entire cycle of plastics available, or at least visible to the general public. To do this I wish to make the blue-prints of the apparatus available opensource on the Precious Plastics forum. Open-source machine plans for moulding and shredding are already available. Ideally I see the apparatus housed in a public sector institution such as science museums that allows access to all and utilizes an ‘access model’ of circular business. A circular economy is only feasible if the process is a slow one. I have a theory that self production will give rise to emotional attachment to products. Design for attachment being the epitome of long lasting design. 17. 17.
Research Methods of Plastic Sorting: Among the methods shown here, I selected to use the sink-float sorting method. The reason for doing so was that it was the method used locally and hence relatable to the local population. It had the most potential for ‘gamification’ as it was the easiest to scale down and replicate. I saw potential in it to be a visual interesting and playful experience.

The principle for sorting mixed plastic shreds into its 6 most common types using a sink-float method 19. 19.
I began the project by exploring various processes to sort plastics and identifying the one that best suited my project. I identified that to be chemical sorting by a sink-float method. I then set out to synthesize the required solutions and test this method in the lab. The next step was to conceptualize apparatus that would best communicate this process through sketches and mock-ups. Lastly I attempted to develop an experience around the apparatus. To replicate such a scenario I made a short video explaining the process. The video can be found here.

Multiple iterations of the apparatus were fabricated and tested with varying levels of success. The tests can be seen here and here. Based on these tests I identified an ideal solution. This option, Option C, will be tested soon. I wanted a solution that is: • Low tech • Simple Mechanics • Intuitive • Easily replicable • Uniform • Low-maintenance • Use iconic, easily recognizable mechanisms
Option B : Bottle Brush Setup Option A : Archimedes Screw
Option C : The next step 21. 21.
User Testing: We did a trial run of the apparatus in a chemistry class at the Kolding HF of VUC. After instructions from me and the teacher the students were successfully able to sort the plastic shreds provided to them

Internship: Tupperware kitchenware trends (2011, Professional Project, 6 weeks)
Project Mentor: Silas Grant, Girish Prabhu I did a summer Internship project for Tupperware Brands International through S-labs. Forming teams of 2, each team tried to cover one region of the country. I was one half of the duo that travelled to five cities in the north of India. Our task was to go ‘cool hunting’, to observe and document the average Indian kitchen, beliefs associated with cooking, popular products used in kitchens and upcoming ones in the market. The final outcome of this project was a extensive document looking at 4 marketable aspects of the Indian kitchen, namely Serving, Microwave usability, Indian Snacks and Savories and Storage. Each visited cities which were selected according to their economic ranking (e.g. Bangalore is an A1 city). We wanted to cover Metropolitan cities as well as tier 2 cities and smaller towns. We designed a card sorting exercise containing 25 cards that we asked homemakers to participate in. This acted as an ice-breaker because in many cases, we approached total strangers and invited ourselves into their kitchens. By putting up all our insights on ‘Post-Its’, we were able to match the relevant photos with the related insights. Grouping the photos and insights allowed us to find overall trends which were transferred onto mindmaps. The mind-maps then helped us make more confident conclusions on the market conditions and trends at home.

Internship: VE2 (2015, Professional Projects)
Mentor: Hugo Dines Schmidt VE2 is a small studio in the heart of Aarhus, Denmark. Clients we dealt with during my time there were Bovictus, Trip Trap, Furnipart, Hitsa, DanDryer, B&O Medicom among others. Most of the current projects at VE2 are B2B in nature. The firm offers design services at various points along the conception cycle of a product. A client may approach VE2 at different stages. It may be with a simple brief, rough concept ideas, prototyping, tooling, production and after market services. There are times where the firm pitches a concept for the product line of a potential client. I was personally involved in multiple projects, at different stages of completion. I even had the opportunity to lead the form development of a product. The next few pages are glimpses of my workflow during this period. In many cases I am unable to reveal more information due to non-disclosure agreements.

Velowares: Urban Bicycle Pannier
Academic Project
(2013, Academic Project, 16 weeks)
I began this self initiated project by doing research on the rising trend of urban middle class individuals who cycle to work for health, convenience and reducing their carbon footprint. My research showed that carrying ones belongings on a bicycle seemed to be the largest concern among my target group. My designs tried to tackle issues such as carrying a laptop, ideal positioning of baggage, access to belongings, safety and integration into the riders cyclist identity. Prototyping on a limited budget, I learnt the working of a number of CNC machines and how to create technical drawings for use in such machines. Prototyping was a trial and error process where I constantly tried to get maximum strength with minimum weight. To do so I experimented with techniques such as industrial ribbing and origami. This project gave me a broad outlook on how to oversee a product from conception to mass manufacturing while keeping costs to a minimum.
43. 43.
Aim and Inspiration: The nature of cities dictate the movement and habits of riders in those cities. As I part of my research I analyzed the unique habits of by target group of riders and tried to mould the values of my design to better suit their needs. As a extreme user study I looked at the Dabbawala, a daily meal dilevery service in the city of Mumbai where delieveries are made on bicycle.

Writing and documenting my travels has been a dear hobby. Photography is a skill that I developed hand-in-glove with writing. My writing has been featured on blogs and websites. My photos have been displayed at the United Nations Convention on Biodiversity in Hyderabad in 2012. Another photograph has been featured by National Geographic Traveller India in April 2013 as runner-up in their monthly travel photo competition. Here are links to my travelogue and photo-stream. During my free time you will find me either tinkering with and riding around the countryside on my bicycle. I also love to explore the local woods to sight or listen to birds. Sometimes I try to do both at the same time and end up hurting myself.
Thank you for your time.
