Now, 50 years later, LCCC has solidified its role as one of the nation’s best two-year colleges, regularly receiving recognition for individual programs as well as for the entire institution. During this golden anniversary, we encourage everyone to discover all that LCCC has to offer – and to see the exciting future for the college and our community.
Go Make a Difference In Engineering Finding the right major can be very overwhelming and confusing but I think most people can say whatever they do, they want to make a difference in the world. Engineering is a career path that will allow to do just that in so many different ways. As a child, when I heard the word engineer, I pictured someone who drove a train. I didn’t realize that there are so many diverse areas of engineering to be studied. Check out the a few of the engineer types and consider that one may be the right fit for you. Civil Engineering
Civil engineering has historically been, and looks set to continue to be, one of the most in-demand engineering posts around the world. They literally build the very infrastructure around us, and this is unlikely to change in the future. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, civil engineering jobs are set to increase by 10% by 2026. Civil engineering is something of an umbrella term and is unlikely to become saturated in the near fu-
ture. Subcategories of civil engineering include things like structural engineering, environmental engineering, road/highway engineering, and transportation engineering. Salaries tend to start at around $60,000 and rise to around $96,000 for later career incomes.
Electrical Engineering Electrical engineering is another traditional engineering field that has shown healthy growth over time. This, like civil engineering, is another broad church that includes disciplines like power engineering, instrumentation engineering, and electronic engineering to name a few. As electrical engineering is broad with many possible specializations, it will likely remain in high demand for the foreseeable future.
Electrical engineers also command some of the highest incomes out of all engineering disciplines. They can, for example, exceed a quarter of million dollars for some specialist roles. Average salaries, however, are more modest with the average electrical engineers' salary being somewhere in the order of $71K per year. Alternative Energy Engineer Unless you've been living in a cave for the past decade, you can't but help to have noticed the growing demand for renewable/alternative energy around the
world. As government policies are artificially boosting this market, the demand for things like solar and wind energy have been rising at a steady rate over time. The U.S. Department of Labor expects around a 6.5% increase in Electrical Engineering jobs over the next ten years or so. But the primary driver for the rise in renewables
has been their reduction in production price over time too. This is helping to make the industry more sustainable financially. Candidates will need to have a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or electrical engineering and a postgraduate master’s degree in energy engineering. Current starting salaries tend to be in the order of $65,000 per year which tends to rise to about $91,000 by career's end. As
the drive for sustainability in various industries is unlikely to die off, this might be a great and rewarding career choice for any budding engineer.
Is Nursing the Right Path for You? A career in nursing is a great decision for many people. Indeed, many nurses feel it is more of a calling than a career per se; they are driven to provide care to those who need it. Few other professions, if any, afford the opportunity to care for a multitude of other people to such an extent as nursing. And so the satisfaction derived from this career is an immense reward for the hard work and challenges nurses face both in pursuit of their career and each year that they serve in their chosen field. The world will always need great nurses. At the current time, the robust job outlook for nursing and other healthcare careers remains a compelling reason for pursuing a career as a nurse. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, members of the nursing care team in the near future are expected to be in greater demand than ever, with job growth expected to be between 16% and 31% during years 2014-2024 (depending on the specific nursing profession). This growth can be attributed to several factors including the aging population; rising healthcare costs; the pervasiveness of working single- and two-parent homes; and the retiring baby boomer generation. MCC known for popular skilled trades programs Marshalltown Community College has become known for a variety of popular “skilled trades” programs that lead to lucrative careers in two years or less. The programs include Automotive Repair Technology, Electro-Mechanical Systems Technology, Gunsmith Technology, Machine Tool Technology (Tool & Die), Utility Technician (Powerline and Gasline), and Welding. Many area and regional employers come to the MCC campus to interview students and make employment offers before the students even graduate!
“All of these programs are growing in popularity because there are jobs available for graduates with both one-year and two-year degrees, and those jobs pay extremely well,” says Angie Redmond, MCC Dean of Enrollment & Student Life. “We have recent graduates making anywhere from $30,000 to $50,000 in entry-level wages. And the icing on the cake is that our likeable instructors are all top-notch, so students really enjoy coming to class and learning.”
The MCC Skilled Trades programs are currently accepting applicants. To tour the campus or apply for admission, contact the MCC Admissions Office at 641-844-5710 or email mccinfo@iavalley.edu. Prospective students can sign up online for tours or admission at MCCAdmissions.com.

UNL’s Teachers Scholars Academy A cohort of 40 recent high school graduates have been selected to serve as the inaugural class of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln's new Teachers Scholars Academy. The academy, funded by a donation from the William and Ruth Scott Family Foundation, was created to grow the teacher workforce in Nebraska and address a possible teacher shortage. “This is an incredible group of students with diverse backgrounds and experiences who will help shape each other’s learning about society and education throughout their four years in the academy,” said Braden Foreman, academy coordinator at Nebraska. Foreman will lead the academy and serve as an advocate and mentor for the scholars. “This group represents some of the most promising future educators with already ample experience working with youth,” he said. “I am excited to see how they progress through the academy and into their careers of working with people and their respective communities.” The Teachers Scholars Academy at Nebraska aims to expose future teachers to Nebraska’s schools, communities and changing demographics through experiential learning opportunities. Scholars will become innovative practitioners, ready to empower communities. The scholars represent urban and rural areas in Nebraska and beyond. The scholars plan to major in one of 23 available teacher education programs offered by the College of Education and Human Sciences, College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources and Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts. “The academy is a chance to create teachers who shape the future of education across the diverse communities of Nebraska,” said Guy Trainin, chair of teaching, learning and teacher education. “New societal challenges need new ideas, and this cohort of leaders and innovators will do just that.” In addition to classwork, scholars will gain experience with service and volunteer opportunities through the Lincoln community, be able to conduct research and live together as a cohort during the first year. They will also take part in the Teachers Scholars Academy Seminar course, designed to teach them about characteristics and qualities that make successful educators.
