AmeriFleet (3) employees donated and shipped hundreds of items including shoes, hats and gloves to Afghanistan. AmeriFleet employees gathered hundreds of items for children in villages throughout Afghanistan. AmeriFleet’s involvement was in response to an email that an employee received from a military friend, Jason Summers. Summers, a Law Enforcement Professional (LEP) based in Afghanistan with the U.S. Army, sent an email describing the poor conditions of the children in Afghanistan. His message included a plea to friends and family to join him to help these children with the donation of cold weather gear and other necessities. With many friends and family members in the United States Armed Services, AmeriFleet saw this as a great opportunity for their extended family to help others. “We have great admiration for the efforts of LEP Jason Summers to help the children in Afghanistan,” said John Norris, president, AmeriFleet Transportation. “Jason touched all our 800 employees with his mission. I’m proud of the great job our employees did organizing this charity drive and we hope our donations will help make a difference for those in need.”

And it has never been easier or more affordable! Incorporate comfort, function and beauty into your space with the addition of fireplaces, firepits, stonework, water features and more to update your exterior and increase the value of your home. The award was presented to the students by Tara Muenz from the Georgia Environmental Protection Division. This award is given annually to a group in the state of Georgia that has reached out to their local community about environmental issues. This award goes to the group who has gone above and beyond by utilizing non-traditional formats (multimedia, art, website, music, You Tube, etc.) to raise awareness about water quality. A presentation was made by a group of students about the process of forming a company, making the products, and selling the product. All profits from the company are being using to help the Rocky Creek Area. The students are planning to provide an informational kiosk on the trail to the creek, plant indigenous vegetation to stabilize the creek bank, and build a sitting area for visitors to the area. They are receiving assistance in the project from parent volunteers, Laura Aikens from the city of Roswell Environmental Division, and David Smith, a biologist from Ecological Solutions. 16 AroundAbout North Fulton | april 2011

River Eves Student Drawing Featured in Coloring Book The 2011 Drippy Dropperson coloring book and the top twelve artists who designed it were recently honored at an awards ceremony held at the Roswell City Hall and attended by Roswell Mayor Jere Wood, Georgia State Dylan Fawley and River Eves Senator John Albers and principal Neil Pinnock the Roswell city council. The city of Roswell’s 4th annual Drippy Dropperson contest received over 250 entries this year, all illustrating aspects of water conservation. The 12page coloring book will be distributed to the community through schools, doctor’s offices, restaurants and retailers in Roswell to help entertain children and simultaneously educate them on the benefits of water conservation. Roswell’s third, fourth, and fifth grade students were challenged to design pictures of the cartoon character Drippy Dropperson protecting water. Each picture selected featured a lesson on how to stop pollution, conserve water and keep our water clean. The entry designed by third grade student Dylan Fawley from River Eves Elementary featured Drippy Dropperson taking a shower quickly (“5 minutes or less!”) to conserve water. “This contest is an excellent way to reinforce the concepts of water conservation that we teach at school,” said River Eves principal Neil Pinnock, who also attended the ceremony. “We are honored to have one of our students’ work featured in the coloring book this year.” As for student Dylan Fawley, he said “It’s really cool that other kids will be able to color in my drawing!” Who said water conservation couldn’t be fun?

Hillside Students Make a Difference Students from Hillside Elementary School recently participated in a service project to make and collect blankets for the homeless living on the streets of Atlanta as part of a school-wide character study of kindness. “Kindness means showing others they are valuable by how you treat them,” said Lori Fanning, Hillside Elementary School principal. “This project was the perfect opportunity to teach our students about showing kindness in the community. This service project also exemplifies all the character values we’ve focused on this school year: Respect, Initiative, Uniqueness, Joy, Determination and Kindness.” Every class in the school made their own fleece knot blanket that was donated to the cause. In addition, students were asked to donate new or gently used blankets. Between the blankets created by classes and the ones donated, the school collected more than 150 blankets that will be donated to City of Refuge for distribution Left to right: Hillside student council members to Atlanta’s Joe Scott, Mia Mitchell, Nathan Jacobi and homeless Nolan Siegel promote the blanket drive during population. morning carpool.

Under the

Gold DOME by Representative Charles E. “Chuck” Martin

The 2011 Legislative Session As the legislative days pass and we get deeper into this session, the workload and issues continue to build up. There are a lot of issues we are reviewing this year that have piqued citizens’ interest and I have been enjoying hearing from many of my constituents regarding legislation of great importance to them. Below are a few key highlights I want to share with you.

Both teams enjoyed a morning at the capitol, watching as session progressed, and receiving their respective resolutions. I wish both teams the best of luck with their next season.

HOPE Scholarships

For the ninth consecutive year, I hosted North Fulton High Schools Senior Day at the Capitol. I had the opportunity to meet a strong group of seniors and teachers from Alpharetta High School, Johns Creek High School, Milton High School, Northview High School, and Roswell High School. These determined young students had the chance to watch session in both the House and Senate and had the opportunity to participate in an open forum with legislators from North Fulton. I was joined by Senator John Albers, Speaker Pro Tempore Jan Jones, Chairman Tom Rice, Chairman Wendell Willard, Representative Harry Geisinger, and Representative Lynne Riley throughout the day. We had a great questionand-answer session with these seniors and enjoyed the opportunity to speak with them about current legislation and our day-to-day work at the capitol.

One of the biggest topics, which I am sure many of you have been hearing about on the news, is the HOPE scholarship. My notes on this may be out of date before this article is even printed, however, as you already know Governor Deal unveiled and submitted his reforms to the HOPE program and on March 1, HB 326 passed the House successfully. Essentially, the current lottery revenue is not able to support scholarships at the current specifications and therefore, legislation must be agreed upon in order to combat this revenue shortfall. This is a needed reform and while all changes may not be popular, Governor Deal’s recommendations will ensure HOPE scholarships remain in existence for generations of future students. Recognizing Milton High School Lacrosse Teams On March 1, both the boys and girls Milton High School lacrosse teams came down to the state capitol to be recognized. I wanted to honor these two outstanding teams for winning their respective state championships in 2010. House Resolution 427 honored the Milton girl’s lacrosse team for winning their fifth State Championship in six years and going undefeated against teams in the state of Georgia. House Resolution 428 congratulated the Milton boy’s team on winning the 2010 GHSA Class AAAAA State Championship with an impressive 206 goals to their opponents’ 123 goals. 20 AroundAbout North Fulton | april 2011

The View From CITY HALL

by Alpharetta Mayor Arthur Letchas Traffic: It is every commuter’s worst nightmare. Whether you live in Alpharetta or another city in metro Atlanta, it is a situation that is impossible to avoid. This does not mean local governments are standing by idly watching the problem grow around us. Each year, the city of Alpharetta Arthur G. Letchas is the mayor of invests in the city’s infrastructure Alpharetta. You may contact him by calling 678-297-6020 or e-mail through intersection aletchas@alpharetta.ga.us. improvements, better traffic light timing, and new sidewalks and/or bicycle lanes. It is no secret that traffic is a regional issue. In order to tackle the need for improved infrastructure, it will take coordination and funding among multiple agencies at the state and local levels. A solution has been proposed and is currently in the works. In June 2010, our state legislatures signed the Transportation Investment Act. This act will put the future of our state’s transportation into the hands of you, the voter. On November 6, 2012, you will be asked if a special one cent sales tax should be levied to fund transportation projects. If it passes, here is how it will work.

The point is to put together a list of transportation projects that will meet the following goals upon implementation: • Support Georgia’s economic growth and competitiveness; • Ensure safety and security; • Maximize the value of Georgia’s assets, getting the most out of the existing transportation network; and • Minimize the impact of the environment.

The state of Georgia was divided into 12 regions. Alpharetta falls within the Atlanta roundtable, which includes all the local governments within Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fayette, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, and Rockdale counties. This regional roundtable will develop a list of projects to be funded through the one percent sales tax. Local governments had to submit their list of nominated projects by March 30.

It is recommended that the project list should come from existing plans. Fortunately, the cities of Alpharetta, Milton, Mountain Park, Johns Creek, Roswell and Sandy Springs recently completed the North Fulton transportation study. This study detailed regional transportation projects that will better serve the citizens of our community. Many of the projects detailed in this study were submitted by Alpharetta and the other cities of North Fulton.

Over the course of the next several months, members of the Atlanta roundtable will review the nominated projects and come up with a final list. The list will be limited to the projected revenue of a 10-year sales tax. This list will make up 85% of the funding. The remaining 15% of the collected revenue will be redistributed to the counties and cities within the region based on that jurisdiction’s population and lane miles. Each local government has the ability to spend that funding on a transportation project of their choosing.

As a Georgia voter, you have the responsibility of shaping your community’s future. If you would like to learn more about the Transportation Investment Act, please peruse the program’s Frequently Asked Questions website at www.it3.ga.gov/pages/ HB277FAQ.aspx. Also, be sure to turn out to the election polls in November 6, 2012.

Kincaid Orthodontics Where Patients Become Family

or Dr. Jeff Kincaid, orthodontics is about more than creating pretty smiles; it’s also about creating personal relationships with patients and their parents. “We want patients to feel at home, like they’re part of our family,” says Dr. Kincaid, who has been in private practice with Kincaid Orthodontics for nearly 24 years. “We try to know and call all patients by name here, and we care about what’s happening in their lives. Our patients compliment us for going out of our way to be friendly,” he says, “but that’s just our philosophy.” With offices in Woodstock and Roswell, Dr. Kincaid makes it easier for patients to schedule check-ups when it is convenient for them. “We try to split the time equally between the two offices,” he says, “and alternate days in

each office so that it gives patients more flexibility. Plus, all of our records are entered electronically now, so we can access everything at any computer at either office. Patients don’t have to worry that they can’t come into one office because their records are at the other. It’s just another way that we provide comprehensive, convenient service.” Staying in step with the latest technology in orthodontic care helps Dr. Kincaid to provide such comprehensive service. In addition to providing traditional braces for kids and adults, Kincaid Orthodontics also offers SelfLigating braces that feature ceramic brackets with wire that more closely matches the color of your teeth, so the braces are less visible. Other services include corrective jaw treatment, teeth whitening and Invisalign. “We’re getting more and more interest in Invisalign,” Dr. Kincaid says, “and we’re one of only a few practices in Atlanta authorized to market the new Invisalign Teen.” Invisalign Teen uses the same Invisalign technology as the original adult aligners — moving teeth gradually with each set of clear, plastic aligners — but is designed especially for teens. “Invisalign Teen features a unique compliance ‘button’ that fades from blue to clear to indicate actual wear time, so parents will know if their kids are using Invisalign as they should,” he says. “It’s also designed in such a way that it can compensate for new teeth that may come in during treatment.” While Kincaid Orthodontics already offers teeth whitening with Brite Smile, at-home whitening trays, and Crest Whitestrips, Dr. Kincaid is excited to offer a new whitening method specifically for patients in braces. The new method, called Tres White, uses a peroxide-based whitening gel and soft, disposable trays. “The whitening gel is absorbed by the teeth so that it can get underneath Photos courtesy of PhotoJack,

the brackets and work from the inside out. And the soft trays are flexible so that they don’t stop tooth movement or otherwise interrupt treatment,” he says. The disposable trays are essentially one-sizefits-all and always available in-office, which makes Tres White a convenient tooth-whitening choice. Dr. Kincaid recommends patients wear the trays for 30 to 60 minutes once a day, with desired results typically after just one week. “Tres White is a professionalstrength whitening method available only through an orthodontist or a dentist,” he says. Once patients decide on their course of treatment, they can choose from several convenient payment options. Kincaid Orthodontics offers no-money down, interest-free, in-house financing, and for patients who prefer to pay the balance up-front, Dr. Kincaid offers an eight percent discount off the total treatment cost. “We recognized that a lot of parents who wanted to put braces on their kids couldn’t afford the large down payment that was often required,” says Dr. Kincaid. “We wanted to come up with a way that would make braces more affordable for them, because we want parents to know it’s just as important to us that their kids get the treatment they need. We think our payment options are still relatively uncommon, but we’ve been blessed — so if we can help, why not?” In addition, Kincaid Orthodontics offers a free initial consultation, including complimentary X-rays. Patients can also earn Orthobucks as a reward for arriving to appointments on time and caring for their braces and retainers properly. “Orthobucks is essentially play money that can be used in our Orthostore to buy movie passes, gift cards and other prizes,” Kincaid says. “Kids and adults alike love it.” Dr. Kincaid and his staff are also planning an Appreciation Day as a way of giving back to the patients and the community that have supported Kincaid Orthodontics over the years. “We just want our patients to know we value them. We know that choosing an orthodontist, like any important decision, is as much a ‘feel-good’ decision as anything else. We want to do all we can to reassure our patients that they made the right choice with Kincaid Orthodontics.” JackTuszynski@PhotoJack.net

Igniting the passion and love of learning at an early age Preparing children to be successful academically starts from the very beginning at Brookside Academy. The curriculum is cumulative and progressive. Starting with their Freshmen Curriculum for one year olds all the way up to the Private Pre-K Program, the Seniors, Brookside is igniting the passion and love of learning at an early age. Brookside Academy is proud to have been serving the Alpharetta community for the past decade. “As we celebrated our 10 year anniversary, we thought it would be fun to catch up with some of our alumni. In looking back, we were surprised to see how many of our students have gone on to private schools. We realized when reviewing our records that every child who has ever applied to a private school after graduating from Brookside was granted admission! No small feat by any means!” shared Mindy Goldenberg, Owner and Director of Brookside Academy. Reading the biographies of Brookside’s alumni, you too will see how early learning at a quality school creates the foundation for success in the elementary and middle school years.

Observati ons for 3 & 4 year old admission s held the 2nd w eek of April & May!

Currently attending The Davis Academy Bryan and Evan are 10 years old. They are in the 4th grade at The Davis Academy. They play piano and sing in the chorus. They both enjoyed participating in their school play “Dear Edwina.” In their spare time, Bryan and Evan like to play on their iTouchs, read books and write stories. They are very creative and are excellent students. Brookside remembers fondly trying to distinguish one twin from the other and how much the boys enjoyed trying to fool their teachers. Whenever a Brookside teacher sees Bryan and Evan they remember to look for the special clues that gave them a hint as to who is who!

Currently attending Greenfield Hebrew Academy (GHA) Matthew was in the very first graduating class at Brookside Academy! He remembers the Annual Holiday Caroling, Fall Festivals, Playball and the awesome playgrounds! He loved that his teachers would play on the monkey bars with him and create fun games on the playground. Matthew had a lead role in GHA’s production of “Once upon a Mattress,” playing the role of The King. Matthew scored in the 95% percentile in national testing, gaining entrance to Johns Hopkins Center for Talented Youth Program. He will gain college credits for the second year in a row this summer when he attends Dickinson College in Pennsylvania, studying literature and composition.

This family remembers their years at Brookside with fondness and the kids enjoyed their friends and learning so much. Matthew, age 10, loves science, reading and creative writing. He is representing Fellowship Christian School in the State Spelling bee this month!

I

often wonder, “Why do we welcome technology more in our cars than in our homes?” After all, let’s go back to the last time you approached your car. You probably pressed the button on a remote that unlocked the door and disarmed the alarm. Where’s your remote for your house that does this? As you pull back on the door in your car, the light

by Michael Buckner conveniently comes on for you inside and the seat moves back. When you sit down, and either put your key in or press start, the seat moves forward, the steering wheel moves down and towards you. As you take a drive down the road, your favorite music is just a single button press away on the six presets.

Michael Buckner is the owner of Audio Intersection located at 631 E. Main Street, Canton. For more information on any of his monthly columns, for questions or to set up an appointment, call 770-479-1000.

In our homes, thousands of products are available to give you the same experience as in your car, people just don’t know about them. For example, there are ways to install a remote on your keychain that unlocks your door and disarms the alarm. It’s also rather easy to install a 6-button keypad beside your entry door. These six buttons acts as presets for you and your home, much like the six buttons on your car stereo. Press the #1 or “Welcome” button, and your house takes on the setting that you prefer, like having the lights illuminate the path to your bedroom closet, your thermostat change to comfort mode, and your favorite music to start playing throughout the house. My favorite preset is the “Good Morning” button. First, every morning at my scheduled wakeup time, my thermostat raises the temperature, and easy listening music comes through my speaker system very softly for two minutes. After two minutes, the volume increases and switches to my rock playlist. After I am up and headed to the shower, I press my good morning button. This plays that rock playlist through my bathroom speakers, and the lights very slowly work their way up to 70% over two minutes. When I am finished getting ready, I press the “Goodbye” preset, and all of my music shuts down, my thermostat lowers if it’s winter, raises if it’s summer, the security system turns on, and all lights turn off. In the past, this was the technology for millionaires. Anyone that knows me can tell you that I am far from seven figure status, but you couldn’t tell from my smart home. Of course, the level of extravagance can increase the price exponentially, but to give you an example, a 6-button keypad is $199. It goes without saying that you have to have the other stuff like speakers and a stereo system to take full advantage, but I am constantly going into clients’ homes and making all of their rooms talk to one another with their existing equipment. So every time you hit that keyless entry button on your car, or hit that favorite channel preset on the stereo, think of how cool that could be in your house.

by Dan Jape For most of us, heating and air conditioning is not a luxury, but a necessity. Anyone who has spent a few days with a broken down a/c during a blazing, humid Georgia summer can attest to that. We are so accustomed to our “creature comforts” that many of us take our indoor comfort for granted.

Since the economic downturn, we are seeing more and more people that simply cannot afford to repair their broken air conditioning or heating systems, let alone replace them. We talk to people every day that have been without a/c or heat for two or three years because of the cost associated with fixing it. KITCHEN Cabinetsmart LLC

Improving your cabinets Which Option is Right for You?

W

by Mike Casteel

hen planning your kitchen renovation project, the foremost decision to make about materials regards the cabinetry. Select the style and finish of your cabinets first, then base Mike Casteel owns Cabinetsmart LLC your selections of flooring, and may be reached at 678-494-7101 countertops, appliances, or cabinetsmart@gmail.com backsplash, hardware and paint colors on your cabinet choice.

The first consideration is whether or not you will keep your cabinets. If yes, then you have the option of re-facing or painting the existing cabinets. If you are scrapping the old cabinets, then obviously you’ll be shopping for new ones. Let’s analyze each of these three worthy options for improving your cabinetry. The least expensive and least disruptive option is painting your cabinets. You can keep your countertops and backsplash, and easily add new trim or decorative accents that will also be painted over. The limitation of a paint job is that it is purely superficial, and does nothing to improve your storage issues, workflow, or quality of the cabinets themselves. Unless you truly know what you are doing, I highly recommend you hire a qualified cabinet “artist” to do the job for you. I have seen DIY cabinet paint jobs that actually degraded the kitchen rather than improved it. Take the time to see your painter’s work in person so you know what level of quality and detail to expect. Don’t simply rely on pictures of past work, as painting details don’t show up well in photos. Re-facing becomes a viable option when the guts of the cabinets, such as the inner walls, shelves and drawers, are all in good shape, but the style and finish are outdated or the doors and drawer fronts are damaged or worn. If the countertops and backsplash are newer and worth saving, replacing doors and drawer fronts, and applying a new veneer on the face frames and ends, may be less expensive and disruptive than full replacement of the cabinets. You won’t be able to change your layout, and re-facing is tedious and exacting work, so again, hire a professional who has done it before. Be sure you know where the re-facing ends and the old cabinet material remains visible. Replacing cabinets is the surest way to get a fresh new kitchen and improved layout. Educate yourself of the many cabinet choices available, as they range from off-the-shelf cabinets, to ready-to-assemble imports, to semi-custom cabinetry, to custom cabinetry. For a thorough analysis of all four categories of cabinetry, feel free to email me and request my paper on the topic of cabinet options.

WHAT TO EXPECT From A Sleep Study

According to the National Sleep Foundation, approximately 7 out of 10 Americans are affected by a sleep problem; yet, few seek help. If you fall into this category, you might benefit from an overnight sleep study. Unfortunately, most people are reluctant because they expect sleep studies to be such uncomfortable experiences or they don’t know what to expect at all. Northside Hospital answers a few of the more common questions.

By Cynthia Blount, RN, BSN, CPHQ, director, Northside Hospital Sleep Disorders Centers

Why do I need a sleep study? — Untreated sleep disorders have been linked to a number of chronic diseases including hypertension, heart disease, diabetes, depression and stroke. If you have regular difficulty getting to or staying asleep, if you snore or stop breathing for short periods of time during the night, or if you have persistent daytime sleepiness and fatigue for weeks at a time, an evaluation by a sleep specialist, followed by an overnight sleep study, can save your life. Your problem may just be the result of bad sleep hygiene. However, in order to fully understand your problem, you need to be observed, while you sleep, by someone that is specially trained in sleep medicine. What is a sleep study? — A sleep study, or polysomnogram, records your brain wave activity, muscle twitches, eye movements, heart rate and breathing while you sleep. Sensors are placed on your scalp, face, chest, limbs and a finger, while elastic belts go around your chest and abdomen. As the information is collected, it is transmitted to a computer in the next room, where a registered polysomnographic/sleep technologist monitors you at all times. After the study, a board-certified sleep physician reviews and interprets the information to help you and your personal physician understand your specific sleep patterns and problems. Treatment recommendations are made if evidence of a sleep disorder is found. Sleep Studies are Safe and Painless How am I supposed to sleep like that? — It is very important for patients to feel comfortable with their physician, sleep tech and sleeping environment. For your study, you will be assigned to a private bedroom in a sleep center or hospital. The room may look like an upscale hotel room, with all of the amenities you would expect — private bathroom, TV, soft bedding, breakfast 40 AroundAbout North Fulton | april 2011

and more. You’re also welcome to bring items from home (a favorite pillow or pajamas) to help. Although you will be hooked up to equipment that may look uncomfortable, most people fall asleep with little difficulty. The wires are very thin and flexible and are bundled together so they don’t restrict movement, disrupt your sleep or cause other discomfort. You can easily call the tech during the night if you have any problems.

IS YOUR LIFE CONTROLLED BY ALCOHOL?

It’s ok to ask for help!

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, over 100 thousand Americans die each year from alcohol related causes. The majority of Americans think most of the alcohol related deaths are caused by drunk driving, however, according to the NIAAA only 45% of all deaths in automobile accidents can be attributed to alcohol. Recent studies find people today are more open to use alcohol as a means to cope with financial, job, relationship stress, especially if deprived of any social support. It is important to note, this does not minimize genetics and other factors which contribute greatly to an individual’s drinking behavior. In today’s complex environment the demands of life can awake the desire to consume alcohol on a regular basis. By not realizing such behavior could and will eventually lead to alcohol abuse. Once the individual becomes an alcohol abuser, getting off the “habit”, and back, “on the wagon”, is a challenging

recovery process which requires a great amount of patience, understanding, support and treatment. Therefore, it is important for a person who suspects a loved one, friend, or co-worker is on the road to alcohol abuse. Be aware of the early signs. Alcohol abuse can be triggered by stress at work, unemployment, problems at school, a failed relationship, loss of a loved one and a negative financial situation. It is sometimes difficult to tell if a co-worker, friend, or loved one is under the control of alcohol and/ or drug use. People under the influence of alcohol or drugs often deny, and hide their problem. This makes it more difficult for others to realize the problem exists until is too late. Some of the signs of alcohol abuse come in the form of guilt about drinking too much, annoyance when criticized about drinking, a need for a drink continued on page 54

DEALING WITH Dental Anxiety in Children

by Vishant Nath, DMD The dental office can be an intimidating environment. This is true even for adults, who have some experience and rational for knowing the importance of going for regular dental visits. So you can imagine the anxiety it can cause in some children. Fortunately pediatric dental offices offer many options for calming anxious children.

Dr. Vishant Nath is the owner of Roswell Pediatric Dentistry. You may contact him at 678-352-1090 or visit www.kidshappyteeth.com.

Pediatric dentists have specialized training during their two-year residency, which includes various tactics for creating a calm, happy dental visit for children. Most pediatric dental offices offer enjoyable distractions for children, including television, video games, and child-friendly décor. Pediatric dentists will have child-friendly jargon that they use to explain to the young patients what will occur during their dental visit. Many will utilize the “Tell-Show-Do” method. An example of this would be to name a dental instrument, then to show how it works (possibly by placing it against the child’s hand), then to use the instrument in the dental procedure. Another technique that is used is called modeling. In this technique, an anxious patient is paired with a non-anxious patient of the same age. With any technique that is used, positive reinforcement is also used. Any time the patient responds in a cooperative manner, the dentist and staff praise him or her. Dental rewards are often given to the child at the end of the visit to further reinforce a positive experience. There are a variety of different reactions that children will have in a dental office. The goal is to create as many positive experiences as possible to ease any anxiety that might be present for the child. It is best to begin creating these experiences at an early age. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child have their first dental visit within six months of the first tooth erupting, or at the age of one, whichever occurs first. These early experiences serve to introduce the young patient to the dental office. The first visit may only involve the dentist counting their teeth, but it can go a long way towards creating a healthy attitude for the child towards their dentist. continued on page 54 42 AroundAbout North Fulton | april 2011

MOM ANDth TOTS April 15

by Colin Morris April 15 is an important date. Everyone else in Georgia may be frantically doing financial paperwork, but my kids and I are planting our garden. My mother-in-law has Colin Morris is a freelance writer who resides in Woodstock with her husband and three children. a green thumb. Many years ago she counseled me to never plant anything in the yard before April 15th. Of course, being a young bride, and with the weather outside looking gorgeous and warm, I didn’t listen to her advice. I went to the garden store, bought a buggy-full of happy little plants and spent the first week of April moving them into my yard. You don’t need a crystal ball to guess what happened. A cold snap killed all my little happy plants. Now, I hold fast to the April 15th rule. th

I don’t claim to be an expert gardener. I learn something new about planting a garden every year that we do it. Last year we tried growing veggies for the garden from seed. We were operating on a tight budget, and buying seedling plants was many times more expensive than buying seeds. Well, it turns out the kids really enjoy planting the seeds inside and watching them sprout. I bought a little mini-greenhouse, and we planted cucumbers, beans, tomatoes and some herbs. Within a week some of the plants were peeking up through the dirt. The lesson I learned was to start earlier. We did not start growing our veggies until early April. By the time they got big enough to move outside, I felt like my garden was woefully behind. The plants did grow and produce a sizable harvest, but our tomatoes were some of the last to turn red. Planting a garden with my kids gives them a sense of ownership and responsibility. My youngest son planted a bean plant in his classroom last year. When he brought it home, we planted it in our garden. From then on it was Patrick’s bean plant. The plant grew like “Jack and the Beanstalk” until the caterpillars found it. Unfortunately, Patrick had to learn a hard lesson about “farming” and crop failure! It was eventually a positive experience because we captured as many caterpillars as we could and enjoyed watching them in our bug jar. continued on page 54

A CELEBRATION of Hope

by Ron Bradley The month of April is all about EASTER. This year Easter is as late in April as it can possibly be, giving us more time to prepare for the wonderful celebration of hope. Pastor Craig Barnes once wrote, “Easter is about more hope than we can handle.” Easter is all about hope but it is different from secular hope — it is bigger!

Dr. Ron Bradley is the pastor at First Baptist Church Roswell. You may contact him at 770-587-6980 or ron@rfbc.org.

Easter hope is different because there is no situation that Easter cannot embrace and change. Easter hope was born out of chaos and despair. Tears flowed freely. Sorrow and confusion reigned. It was a time of utter hopelessness and despair. On Good Friday, the disciples buried Jesus, their trusted leader, and the dreams they shared with him. Spiritually it was midnight and it seemed that morning would never come. For many people it seems like midnight right now. Some have buried loved ones, lost jobs, received bad medical reports, or filed for divorce. The problems are so large and complex it seems they cannot be resolved. But Easter is coming! Mary and the women accompanying her to Jesus’ tomb that first Easter morning were not making that journey because they hoped things would be different; they were going to finish the burial process that had not been completed on Friday. Some of you are walking down that painful, lonely path. Craig Barnes wrote about the significance of where you are, “No one is ready to encounter Easter until he or she has spent time in dark places where hope cannot be seen. Never forget that the discovery of the risen Christ occurred in darkness and it still does.” Easter hope is unique because the change it creates is radical. Upon seeing the empty tomb, Mary’s focus changed from completing the burial process to sharing the good news that Jesus was alive. Easter hope is not about finishing something, but charting a new course. It is not about getting something back, but creating something new. It is not about restoring normalcy but discovering a new way of living. It is about believing God when He says, “Behold, I make all things new!” and letting a living Christ perform that miracle in our lives. Easter hope is about all things new and better. It really is almost more hope than we can handle! 46 AroundAbout North Fulton | april 2011

April 15th

continued from page 45

I hope you don’t get an inflated mental picture of our garden. It is truly very humble. Up against our house, we have a small plot of maybe 2 feet by 15 feet where we plant several different types of tomato, some herbs and maybe a green veggie or two. However small it may be, it brings our family much benefit and enjoyment. Even if you only have the room or the budget for a small pot of herbs, plant something with your kids — just not before April 15th!

Children’s Dental Anxiety

continued from page 42

Imagine how much more smoothly dental visits will go for a child that only needs to come in for x-rays and cleanings twice a year. As a parent, you can help to prevent the need for dental treatment by instilling great oral hygiene in your child. The simple act of brushing at least twice a day and flossing daily can help to prevent your child from developing dental anxiety. Studies show that parents with good oral hygiene habits pass these habits along to their children. So remember to practice what you preach and be a good role model for your child!
