INSIDE THE EFL Finals Week 3 How has the year been? Finals are a great time to catch up with people at EFL footy. There’s always plenty of familiar faces in the crowd. Former and current players, coaches and club committee people. The question I’m often asked is “how’s the year been”? And while there’s still Phil Murton plenty of important games EFL Chief Executive Officer ahead, it’s a good time to reflect on where we are at and where we need to go. The five pillars of our strategic plan are Clubs, Participation, Partnerships, Operational Excellence and Financial Management. This is what we plan around and what we are measured against. In a competition our size, there are always some clubs, both at junior and senior level, not travelling as well as they would like. This year though, it’s been a bit more settled than last, without the crisis we saw at Scoresby and Donvale. And while there is someone at the bottom of every ladder, each senior team won at least one game and all teams had a percentage over 50, indicating at least a level of competitiveness. The spread of junior finalists and premiers was the best it’s ever been also. From a participation perspective girls footy and netball meant 500 or so females are now involved in our clubs who previously wouldn’t have. Attending grand finals in each of these competitions recently, both were filled with plenty of excitement and support and add an important mix of diversity to our competition and our clubs. But we also know we need to focus on male footy at the same time. With changing demographics in some areas and general competition for leisure time, we are working with AFL Victoria and clubs to ensure we are engaging as many kids as possible in our great game. Game Development Manager Aaron Bailey recently had an Auskick forum where ideas and initiatives for 2016 were discussed and shared with all the Auskick centres in our area. And the names read out at our Junior Presentation Night on Friday show that kids from all backgrounds are embracing our game and is
an area we need to continue to work on. The Community Club Sustainability Program has been a big topic of discussion. With the recent announcement a player points system will be in place for 2016, the feedback continues to be overwhelmingly positive with people in club land seeing it as a real positive step in encouraging junior development and player loyalty. Off field it’s been relatively controversy free, touch wood. I say to people the strength the league is the quality of the people in our clubs. They are the ones who have brought into the vision of what EFL footy should be. The environment that is presented on and off the field, the behaviour of everyone involved. As the father of three boys under seven, I often use the young dad test as a measure of a clubs environment. If a young dad (or mum) moved to your suburb and on a Saturday afternoon chose to come down with the kids to watch some local footy, what is the environment they would see? Would what he sees and hears make him want to come back again at the next home game? Or would it turn him away, looking for other things to do with the kids on a Saturday afternoon or go to another club? With so many of our clubs located near to one another, people can easily vote with their feet. And you never know, he could be the next Junior Club President, or his kids the future stars of tomorrow. The value of a community footy club was reinforced in a study by La Trobe University earlier this year. It showed for every dollar spent on a community football club, at least $4.40 is returned in social value in terms of increased social connectedness, wellbeing, mental health status, employment outcomes, personal development and physical health. It was important research that helped quantify and qualify the important work that is done in each and every footy club around the country. So “how has the year been”? I’ll let you be the judge of that. But from league level there’s a number of initiatives happening to help improve the competition and ensure we continue to grow and evolve. Good luck to all teams playing this week and remember to support your club in the right way. See you at the games.

FINALS INFORMATION The 2015 Eastern Football League senior Finals series is HERE! FINALS ENTRY The following entry prices (including GST) will apply: ALL DIVISIONS FINALS GRAND FINALS VETERANS FINALS
ADULT CONCESSION** $13.00 $7.00 $15.00^ $9.00^ $5.00 N/A
• Children under the age of 16 are admitted FREE to all finals. ** Concession includes age pension cards, Veteran Affairs cards and disability pension cards ^ $2 from the entry price of all grand finals will be donated to the Blue Ribbon Foundation
CAR PARKING AT FINALS VENUES Car parking inside finals venues may be limited. This will be communicated via the website and to competing clubs in the week leading up to the game. With much larger crowds than for home and away games, don’t assume you will be able to get a park inside most venues as this will not be the case. Councils have also advised that a parking officer will be in attendance, so park only in designated areas.
ONE PAYMENT PER VENUE We’ll again be adopting an approach where your admittance will allow entry for the full day at that particular venue. Each venue has its own admission fee, so if you choose to move between venues you’ll, need to pay a second entry. FINALS UMPIRES The league will supply three field, two boundary and two goal umpires for each finals match. STAY UP-TO-DATE WITH FINALS SCORES Want to know the live scores of other finals? The EFL Media Team will be using Twitter to bring you all the Around the Grounds Scores. They will be ‘tweeting’ live quarter by quarter scores and ‘re-tweeting’ EFL clubs and fans who are keeping the social media world up-to-date with how their team is performing. But you don’t have to sign up to a Twitter account to get access to live scores! Type in m.efl.org.au in your smartphone’s internet browser and follow the prompts to save as an app. Tap ‘Social’ then ‘Twitter’ – presto, you’ve got live scores!
NO DOGS Dogs are banned at all EFL games, including finals and alcohol is not permitted to be brought into any finals venue. It would be appreciated if all clubs would stress these points with both players and supporters. ALCOHOL AT FINALS VENUES Patrons attending finals are not permitted to bring alcohol into the venues. At venues where cars have access to the grounds, a condition of entry is that boots are inspected and this will be rigidly enforced. Apart from ensuring compliance with liquor licensing and council by-laws, it helps to protect clubs revenues from finals. As in past years, there will be a two-can limit on purchases and all alcohol sold will be opened by bar staff on purchase. These are part of the licensing requirements.

STATS BENCH We’re back to the same four teams who have shared the last 12 Division 1 Premierships. Norwood seem to have timed their run quite well and were the only team to beat Balwyn during the home and away. Having said that to finish on top Noel McPhee with just one loss and @statsbench one draw is impressive and sets the Tigers up for a huge tilt at a fourth Premiership. These two have met in three previous finals, two wins to Balwyn and one, last year’s decider, to Norwood. Might have to get the SBRD* to check how many finals Vermont and East Burwood have played against each other (gee that was quick: 19!) Well Noble Park and Vermont are already up to their 9th this week such is their custom to finish in the top part of the ladder together over the last 15 years since Noble joined the EFL. The Eagles lead finals match ups 6 to 2; Noble Park won this year’s round 10 match by six goals. Division 1 Finals Balwyn Noble Park Finals Overall Balwyn Norwood Noble Park Vermont

Is it possible to recover from such a huge loss that Croydon experienced last week? Even if they win what would it be like going into a Grand Final knowing you had barely fired a shot two weeks previous? Resilience is a buzz word at the moment and the Blues will need to show plenty to make consecutive Grand Finals. At one and four, and the one win was by a single point, not too many at Kilsyth would have confidently predicted a Grand Final berth. Yet here they are in their first Grand Final since 2009 when not too many so-called experts had them even making finals. They are looking at breaking a Premiership drought extending back to 1995. Warrandyte reach their first Premiership decider since their 2006 Division 4 triumph. Both teams were original members of Division 1 when the EFL started in 1962 but have only played one previous final against each other, won convincingly by the Bloods in 1992. DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES Balwyn: We have again reached September, which in football terms means Finals! This season has again been a terrific one for our club with both the seniors and reserves finishing on top of the ladder at the end of the home and away season. It was also a pleasure to again have an under 19 team, of which at least 6 players over the last two years have played senior footy. We hope we can continue to attract and foster young players to continue their football journey with the Tigers. This week we begin our ninth consecutive finals campaign for the seniors in EFL Division 1, a great achievement in itself. To the players, we wish them all the very best in their quest for the ultimate success. It is the first time in our clubs EFL history we have both teams finishing on top. With pretty much a full list to choose from and the confidence of a strong home and away season we hope their performances can rise further to match the occasion. We will be having our Grand Final Eve luncheon on Friday 18th September at the clubs social rooms so include that in your diaries which is always a great day in the calendar of the club. Enquiries or bookings to Football Manager, Jo Tregear – 0412 172 183. More details to come via our website and social media. BEST & FAIREST PRESENTATION NIGHT: Our next big social night to finalise the year, will be the B&F, which will again be held in the River Room at Crown Melbourne on Saturday 26 September (week after EFL Grand Final, and a week before AFL Grand Final). Get this date into your diary and don’t miss what will be another sensational night. $150 all inclusive. Bookings with Jo on number above. POLO SHIRTS our new design Puma Polo Shirts now available for sale - $50 – See us at the club on Thursday nights or contact Jo on the number above. Blackburn: After a sluggish and inaccurate start to the reserves Qualifying final against arch nemesis Vermont, the Reserves came out after half time and piled on 6 goals to nil in a dominant display of team oriented, pressure footy all over the ground. There wasn’t a weak link as we strangled opportunities for the opposition mids and forwards leading to Vermont kicking only 4 goals for the game and their lowest score all year! Hobbo, Dunny and big bad Joshy Ralph won most of their contests and the on ball brigade of Mitch Thorp, Donoghue and Joey Zema, who took a screamer worked hard to share the ball and create plenty of chances for our forwards in Jack Lewis & Jake Toohey (2 goals) and Adey, Banks, DeAurago, Hanley (1 each) amongst others. A further 4 goals in the last led to a scintillating 59 pt win. A 2nd Semi awaits against Balwyn, which should be a ripper. With an average age of just 23 yrs, this team 10
is truly an exciting proposition when they get it together – good luck next week lads! Our U19’s had a tougher match, after only having played 1 in the last 4 weeks. Our opposition, Knox, had played the last 5 games straight and presented more battle hardened in a keenly anticipated Qualifying Final at Bayswater. After an even 1st Qtr, the opposition were able to capitalise on some of our errors and go into half time with a 3 goal lead. Our young squad combined with some boys returning from injury were unable to maintain the intensity of Knox and struggled to put a score on the board to make up the deficit. Best on the day were X. Maddern, K. Hawley, H. Davis & Joey Dikranian. Sack & Herman kicked 2 goals each. Whilst some of our key position players and on-ballers were down on the day, the boys now know what it takes to compete at Div 1 Finals standard and will be better for the run with more support and a big week on the track before a 1st Semi awaits at Ringwood on Sunday against Norwood. Let’s get back on the winners list. Go Burners! Upcoming Events: Presentation Night – Thursday 24th September, 7.30pm. Grand Final Eve Lunch – Fri 2nd October, 12 noon with Guest Speaker Rex Hunt, followed by our world famous Duck Drop completion. Noble Park: The NPFC would like to congratulate the U19s on an incredibull season. To finish on the bottom last year and to finish playing in a final in 2015 is a great effort. The result was not what we all liked but we are all very proud of you. Congratulations on a great season. Thank you to Matt, Mick, Troy, Rose and Lou for the support and commitment to the guys during the year. As it was said last Sunday, this is not the end it is the start of your journey in senior football. Not the best result last week to the Seniors but we still have another chance today. The NPFC just want to remind all supporters to support and cheer in a respectful manner. On Thursday 1 October the Bulls are holding their annual presentation night “Peter Reece Medal Night” on this night we acknowledge the incredibull effort of not the just the winners of the B&F but a night of celebrating and recognising the contribution of the players, coaches , support staff, volunteers, committee and sponsors - ‘One Club My Club’. Bookings and payment is required before the night so please call Tracey on 0438001577. The NPFC would like to wish all the dads a very incredibull Father’s Day – GO BULLS........... Norwood: Norwood has safely cleared the first finals hurdle in its attempt to go BTB in the 2015 EFL first division final series with a strong 29 point win www.efl.org.au
DIVISION 1 CLUB NOTES over a gritty Noble Park on Saturday at Bayswater Oval. The win was largely set up with a 5 goal to 1 first quarter and 26 point lead, where it remained most of the day. In a tense final quarter we held Noble at bay to win 15.10.100 – 10.11.71. Zak McCubbin opened the scoring after just 10 seconds with a bomb from 50 after a quick centre clearance. We were applying enormous pressure on Nobles defensive group, forcing them into mistakes. Kreusser flashed in for a trademark goal on the back of one of these lapses and by quarter time it was all Norwood as we led 5.4 – 1.2. It could have been more. The 2nd quarter was much more even, 3 goals apiece, as Noble steadied against our early onslaught. They had the better of the 3rd quarter too, edging it 5 goals to 4, our efficiency up forward giving us a 16point lead into the last quarter. Straight away in the last stanza Noble had two shots at goal, both gettable. Both missed. With 15 minutes gone and no goals scored Rej went storming into goal from 15m, but he hit the post! Brought down illegally he was given another shot on a wonky ankle, he missed again!!! Heartrate and anxiety levels rose. Kreuzzer also missed a ‘sealer’. Fordy took a heroic “run with the flight” chest mark in front of the coaches and then 19 minutes in Matt Decler marked 35m out on the right boundary line. Coolly, he slotted a memorable goal. The game was ours. As is always the case in our best wins, we had contributors across the board. None were better than our captain, John Holmes, who set the game up with dominant grunt clearance work in the 1st half. Matt Aver was excellent in the back-line, while Darin Stewart was a menace to Noble all day. His four goals were key. Murphy Ambrose did a fine lock-down job on Martin, Stuey Hill took his regulation half-dozen “goal-saving” marks at halfback, while Lochie Dickson was at his creative best. But to a man all 22 could walk from the ground proud of their efforts in the game, everyone doing something for the team along the way. We now play Balwyn in the 2nd semi. They are in red hot form and fresh off a week’s break so we will need to be at our absolute best to beat them. With a full squad and hopefully no injuries, we can look to welcome back Matt Bate, and after a long layoff, possibly Brent English too, a name that is enough to raise eyebrows in the opposition coaching box. In other games the development squad bowed out of the finals race after losing their elimination final to Rowville on Sunday, while the U19s kept their season alive with a convincing win over Noble Park. They will play next Sunday at Jubilee. Social: Vote Count, Saturday 12th September 7pm in the MARK-E. All welcome. Finger food provided, drinks at bar prices. THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
Rowville: Last Sunday we ventured out to Jubilee Park in Ringwood, for our Senior and Reserve elimination finals! The senior game against Vermont being a very significant one for the club as it was our first ever finals appearance in Division one, with the Reserves (runners up last season) hoping to beat Norwood to go one better than in 2014! The Reserves got the day off to a brilliant start jumping out the box to hold a 24 point lead at quarter time, the lead was increased to 42 points at the main change as the boys played a quick running style brand of football, dominating all over the ground. The half time message was to maintain the same intensity and game style as the first half. The next half saw both sides kick 6 goals with the Hawks running out comfortable winners by 45 points in doing so earning the opportunity to take on Vermont today! In the senior game, Vermont came out firing to kick 5 straight in the first term to lead us by 21 points, after that it was always going to be difficult for us to catch up especially considering only 12 goals were kicked for the game. All though we lost the game it’s been a positive year by this group as after the final round last year they set them self for a finals berth. Coach Peter Bastinac and his support staff must be happy! Today we wish the best of luck to all the boys and hope for a great result! Go Hawks! Vermont: An outstanding team effort by our Seniors last week to restrict the oppositions run and proudly win a spot in the 1st Semi Final this weekend. The Reserves had a hard day in the Qualifying Final, but had earned a second chance today after a fantastic Home & Away season. Our Under 19’s will start their campaign in qualifying final at Bayswater. We wish all our teams the best of luck. SOCIAL:Firstly may we express our extreme sadness at the passing of a Club Legend in Robert Holland and our deepest sympathy to Bill, Mick and families. The Presentation and Vote Count Nights for the Under 19’s will be in Clubrooms on Thursday 1st of October and the seniors on Friday 2nd October. (Yes it was wrong in our Monday News E-mails). Sunday Night we are back at Vermont Clubrooms for a refresher. There are still plenty of vacant Trophy Donation spots on the boards in the Clubrooms. We invite YOU to contribute. There are still plenty of tickets/butts out for the Mighty Eagle Raffle. If you have some, can you please!! Get it all back to Brian Power ASAP. It is Drawn on the 2nd of October. Great to see young Mitch Honeychurch going so well at the Western Bulldogs whilst another ex-Vermont boy in Chris Knights retires after a fine AFL career despite terrible bad luck with injury. 11

YEAR OF THE ‘DOGGA’ Sunday afternoon was not only a day of triumph for Doncaster East on a club level, as their star full forward Dean Limbach notched up his 100th goal for season 2015. As the Lions handed Bayswater their 2nd successive 60 plus point loss in as many weeks to progress to the preliminary final, it was Limbach who arguably saved his best performance of the year for the first week of finals. Limbach required eight goals to bring up his century and started in blistering style, kicking seven first half goals, including four in the first quarter, to take his tally to 99. But just like our best Australian cricketers, the man they call ‘Dogga’ showed signs of nerves as he neared the magical mark, missing a number of relatively easy set shots in the third term. However at the 24th minute mark, he sealed the deal. Thanks to some great transition play out of Bayswaters backline, full of run and handballs, Limbach marked and ran into an open goal, capping off a classic piece of Doncaster East football that we’ve seen all year. Cue the celebrations behind the goals and a sea of Lions jumpers flooding into the forward line to celebrate with the cult figure. By the end of the day, he had finished with 12 marks inside 50 and a tally of 11.4 in total, a day to remember for many reasons. To be fair to the ex-Wodonga Raider, it’s been a whole year to remember. He asserted his dominance early before fighting through a mid-season lull, finishing the year strongly with success and form. It’s almost identical to the Lions’ season as a whole too, highlighting how much influence he has on their success. He introduced himself in Round 1 against Mooroolbark at home, booting eight goals and stealing the show. The fans arrived to see Carl Peterson on his return to Zerbes, but left speaking about ‘Dogga’. He reached 50 goals in his first 6 games, before hitting a quiet patch in the middle of the season. After managing only 2 goals against Croydon in Round 7, Limbach reappeared the next week against Wantirna South with a slightly different look. Instead of sporting bright green boots, he had decided to change for an equally lairy orange pair. The reason? In one of the more expensive superstitions going around, Limbach changes THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
his boots after he plays a bad game, deciding to never wear the old pair again. It’s a quirk that occurred a number of times during the year, allowing us to see a full colour spectrum of boots. However even a new pair of boots couldn’t save the yips Limbach suffered at times, going through a 7 game period where he only managed 19 goals, resulting in the Lions losing 4 of those games. He battled through a slight knee injury, constant double teaming match-ups and the frustration of sharing a forward line at times, even with his skipper and full back Shane Tennant. Impressively though he fought through, with his last month bringing 25 goals, including two games against Bayswater where he took his season tally against them to 28 alone. He has been technically intelligent, able to mark on the lead with pace, in the air with a big leap or in the one-on-one contest with strength. Wantirna South coach Matt Clark described his leading patterns that play an integral part in his constant accuracy on the weekend perfectly: “He marks the footy in a straight line between both behind posts, which means he’s almost always directly in front when taking a shot and that really helps the average in which he scores goals”. That accuracy shows in the statistics. 103 goals so far at an average of 5.42 a game, the first time a player has kicked 100 goals in a season in the EFL since Kire Talevski and Lukas Appleby in 2011. Three hauls of 10 or more goals. Two games where he outscored the opposition team. Twice best on ground. Ranked 39th in goals kicked in the entire state. Be it his fantastic celebrations or the glint in his eye when EFL CEO Phil Murton handed him the match ball, you could tell how much Sunday meant to Limbach. He faces a tough test on Saturday against Croydon and Paul Thatcher, who have had his measure so far this year, but win or lose, Limbach will be giving his all. Be it the laconic strut, multiple pairs of bright boots or more bags of goals, expect to see a lot more of “Dogga” as the Lions new pin-up hero leads his team towards premiership glory in 2016. (You can see the milestone on YouTube by searching “Dean Limbach’s 100th goal). 21

DIVISION 2 CLUB NOTES Croydon: All three teams will compete in the preliminary finals today, the firsts against Doncaster East, the seconds against Waverley Blues and the under 19’s against Mulgrave. Good luck to all three sides. Congratulations to Ryan Wilson who plays his 200th Club game today. It was a bad day for all three sides last Saturday. It’s hard to comment on the seniors, whereas the seconds put up a credible effort but were defeated by a Wantirna South side featuring many eligible senior players. The under 19’s put in a good performance against a strong Mooroolbark side going down by 11 points. We would love all supporters to get to training on Tuesdays and Thursdays nights at Fred Geale Oval and support the players during the finals followed by dinner in the club rooms afterwards. The Club would like to thank all volunteers for their help during the year. Our last function for the season will be Presentation Night which will be held on Friday 18th September at the Dorset Gardens Hotel. There will be a red carpet entrance from 6pm followed by the presentations starting at 7pm. The cost is $60 a single, $110 a double for a two course meal with drinks at bar prices. GO BLUES!!!! Doncaster East: BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, BANG, tickle, (just to make sure of his 100th! After missing a couple of set shots) then just for good measure - BANG, BANG, BANG again, to make it 11 for the day!! Yes, the Big Fella was on fire last Saturday and nothing the Bayswater boys tried could stop the Dean “Dogga” Limbach show. Baysie had nothing to stop the formation of Dogga targeting “F18s” zipping in and out of packs, thrusting bombs into the forward 50. In fact, the Donny East Express had NO passengers last week and should be cruising on full throttle today. We have never been able to show our best against Croydon up until now, but today we’re hungry Lions on the prowl and we can smell a Grand Final in the wind – so lookout humans! Our ‘Finals Fever Dinner’ (Thursday September 17) tickets have been selling fast. Guest Speakers Mark ‘Bomber’ Thompson) and David ‘OX’ Schwarz. Better call Pete Sowersby (0408 383 118) asap. DEFC Presentation night is Friday Sept 25 at Zerbes – see Michael Gordon for tickets “Our supporters roar every time that we score . . . . We’re the Boys from Donny East” - Colonel. MULGRAVE: UNDER 19s FIRST SEMI FINAL After finishing third on the ladder, we ventured out to Boronia to take on Waverley Blues last Saturday. The ground was in surprisingly good condition after all the rain that fell during the week. For the first time in THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
age we sent out a full strength team, after welcoming back the boys from the senior team of last week. Tom McGowan slotted through a goal in the first minute, and things looked good, but the Blues fought back, applying physical pressure, to be close at quarter time. We were dominating possession, but turnovers were letting us down a little, to go into the half time break nineteen points up. Coach Darren Butler reinforced our game plan at half time, reiterating that the Blues would come out hard in the first quarter, which they did. We absorbed the physical pressure and really took control of the game during this quarter, going into the final break twenty-seven points up, kicking into a slight breeze. The boys finished the game well, running out thirty-nine point winners. Jordy Cochrane dominated his wing, Griffin James continued his great form off half back, Julian HanfiScott showed great skill around the ground, Nathan Prior again showed his class rebounding out of the backline, and Todd Kenny gave his usual workman like performance. Tom McGowan kicked four goals. Next Saturday we take on Croydon at Boronia. Croydon only went down narrowly to Mooroolbark and will be a tough assignment. But, a good week on the track, commitment to our game plan, and there is no reason why we cannot progress to another Grand Final. Thanks to all those Mully people who came and gave the boys great support. Presentation night will be held on October 1st at the Mulgrave Country Club, see Linda or Ash for details. Waverley Blues: Congratulations to our Reserves on their narrow win last week and good luck in today’s Preliminary Final. Coach Taunt is putting together an incredible record in coaching finals so let’s hope that winning streak continues. Last week the twos got out to a comfortable lead thanks to solid efforts led from the backline, with Playsted, Turner, Price and Oldham working together beautifully. That was until the last quarter which was a carbon copy of the 2014 Reserves Grand Final, with Doncaster charging home but just falling short. Huljak played a great last quarter. For the sake of my few remaining follicles let’s hope we play out four quarters today and have a big win! Well done again to the Under 19s on their season, it having ended at the hands of Mulgrave last week. Thanks to coaches McCulloch, Savage and Turner and the many new helpers that stepped up to help us field a strong side. These people are truly the future of the club so the skies are blue for 2016. Croydon have three sides playing today so they’ll be bound to have a good following. Let’s get to the game in numbers and support our Reserves side with some vocal cheer and encouragement. Go Blues! 23

UMPIRES CORNER By Darren Goldspink EFL Head of Umpiring As many would be aware, 3 field umpires have, and will continue to, officiate throughout the 2015 EFL Finals Series. There has been conjecture in some quarters as to whether or not 3 umpires are needed in finals because we only have 2 in the home away series. At a pinch, we probably could appoint 2 umpires for Finals, however, for those who have played in finals, in any competition, you would appreciate that the intensity and physical demands of finals means that we would be expecting too much for 2 umpires to do their job properly. The most noticeable difference between the 2 and 3 Umpire system is that we are able to more readily adjudicate on contests in and around the goal area. Our focus with the 3 umpire system is to have an umpire to adjudicate on all contests in and around the goal square. With 3 umpires, the end zone umpire is usually in a position to make any decisions that need to be made. He will usually get to that position without being under too much physical distress, particular late in quarters, and games. This differs dramatically from the 2 umpire system where umpires are under more physical stress because of the fact that they have more ground to cover. Even if they do get to contests, they are sometimes so focussed on getting to the contest, they sometimes drop their concentration in adjudicating on the actual contest. These contests typically involve the forward pushing the back out of marking contests. These situations will, and have been, picked up throughout the finals series. Another positive with the 3 umpire system in
comparison to 2 umpires is that there is another set of eyes at a stoppage. Quite often with 2 umpires, we may miss players who are being scragged and held at stoppages as one umpire is concerned with the ball up and the other umpire can only view one side of a contest. Another umpire allows us to pick up more of these infringements thus allowing our ball players the opportunity to contest the ball without being scragged or held. This no doubt adds to the spectacle of the game. Thirdly, the 3 umpire system allows us to detect and control potentially volatile situations. During the season, if for example, a player is felled after disposal in the middle of the ground, the umpires will pay the free and continue with the play. On occasions, the pursuant remonstration from team mates can get out of hand. In the 3 umpire system, this free would be paid, and the trialling umpire would be quickly in to diffuse any remonstrations. The play will continue and, in this instance, players will be focussed on the next act of play and nothing will come of the incident. I believe that 3 umpires contribute to the game. Ideally, if numbers and depth permitted, it would add to the competition if we could implement it throughout the home and away series. At present, numbers and depth don’t permit that to happen. But hopefully, one day in the not too distant future we will be able to implement this system throughout the seniors competition. Good luck to those players and clubs participating in finals this week.

NETBALL REVIEW Two Netball Grand Finals down and two to go! In a great finish to both the Division 3 and Division 4 seasons both games were decided by less than 5 goals! Division 4 - The Bears victorious - just! A dominant 2015 season saw the Bears comfortably winning their way through to the 2015 Grand Final! After taking an early first term lead over Forest Hill, they were tested for the next three quarter right to the final whistle. Coming from 4th position Forest Hill had nothing to lose and at a number of points during the game could have stolen and unexpected win. Alicia Cuesta was sensational in the middle, providing The Basins shooters with solid supply, For Forest Hill, Stephanie Halliday played predominantly from WA and was brilliant across the mid-court. In the second half Saunders took control of the game and landed 22 of her sides 24 goals and applied the pressure on the Scoresby defensive combination. Both sides had their chances late in the game, it wasn’t until Mooroolbark took a 3 goal lead late in the final term the they felt comfortable they could hold on. Mooroolbark 8 Scoresby 8

Division 3 - Mooroolbark successful in tight affair Much like the Division 4 Grand Final, the game between Mooroolbark and Scoresby was contest of ups and downs for both sides. Scoresby applied early pressure, led through the centre court by Maddie Prior, although the impact of Mooroolbark Goal Attack Jordan Kennedy and her combination with GS Ash Saunders seemed to be the difference early. 40

DIVISION 3 CLUB NOTES Park Orchards: Its finals time and the Park Orchards Football Club would like to congratulate our u19’s and Reserves teams for making the finals. With a disappointing week last week in the second semi final, we reset and shift our focus to this Saturday where we have another chance to push for the ultimate goal. Both games are versus UFTG which will prove to be a great battle as most games this season have been tight. The coaches have had some solid reviews and are really happy with the solid training sessions this week and are ready to tackle the challenge that lies ahead. We look forward to getting the Shark army out in force to cheer on our teams and to help their teammates over the line to book their spot in the 2015 GF. Good luck to the both teams this Saturday. Templestowe: Happy Father’s Day to all those Dad’s getting a day out at to see the best Aussie Rules competition in the Eastern suburbs with the Dockers going into a re-match against the Basin Bears this Sunday at East Burwood. Last Saturday, Semi Final 2 was held at the East Burwood venue in wet and windy winter conditions against the Mitcham Tigers. The Dockers were under the pump from the first bounce with Mitcham jumping out of the blocks full of confidence. A 28 point to nil first quarter kicking with the wind was not the start the boys from Templestowe had planned for. To their credit, they dug deep for the second quarter and reduced that margin to 13 points. Confidence was up at half time with Coach Irwin urging the Stowe
42
to go hard and play fast footy. The third quarter was a real arm wrestle with only one major from each side showing Mitcham leading by 16 points. Finals are tough and it is what all Clubs strive to get to all year so at three quarter time we believed we still had a chance. To Mitcham’s credit, they held strong and kicked 4 goals 2 points to the Stowe 2 goals 3 points running out winners by 27 points. Brad Riddle awarded best on ground from our side with Paul Fiorenza booting two majors. You can still get the Dine Out Card – $300 value for only $45 helping to support Doncare. Unfinished Business 2015 – CQR. Upper Ferntree Gully: Good result with both teams winning last week to progress to today’s Preliminary Final. The U19’s after a sluggish first half played some good footy in the second half to run out comfortable winners over a determined Mitcham side while the reserves were well in control early before letting Ringwood back into the game in the last quarter. Good luck to both sides today against Park Orchards with the reward being a Grand Final berth next week. Don’t forget Presentation Night is at the Dorset Gardens Hotel on September 19th; tickets are available from the club. Thank you to all our sponsors for 2015 and especially our Major Sponsor Ferntree Gully Toyota and Gold level sponsors LPS Waste Services, Knox Ford, Frawley Signs, Action Events and Mystique Printing. Please use them and mention you are from the club so they continue their great support to us. Good Luck Today Upper.....Go the Red and Blue.

DIVISION 4 CLUB NOTES Ferntree Gully: The second week of the finals and it was back to wintery conditions at Walker Park, Mitcham. Our Reserves took on Forest Hill for a chance at the ultimate prize; our boys got jumped early but fought their way back into match to be only 10 points down at the final change. Unfortunately the comeback proved too much eventually going down by 39 points at the final siren - Nicholas Jook booted 3 goals, while Jason Matthews finished with 2 goals and Sam Fisher chipped in with 1 goal. Well done to Peter Weston and the boys on a great season, with a young side we look forward to bigger and better things next year. Congratulations to our Under 12 girls on winning their Grand Final on Sunday – well done to John Hilton and the girls. A big thank you also goes out to everyone who volunteered their time at the All Abilities Preliminary final on Sunday at Wally Tew Reserve. Today our Under 19’s after earning the week’s break, take on Warrandyte for Premiership Glory, Good Luck to John Turner and boys, let’s hope you come home with the chocolates. Also Good Luck to our All Abilities side who also play off for Premiership Glory on Sunday – we wish Tim Beare and the boys all the best. Don’t forget our Senior Presentation Night on Saturday 12th September 2015 – please see Ange Cavarra for tickets and our AGM on Wednesday 21st October 2015 at the clubrooms commencing at 7:30pm. Don’t forget to Support Our Sponsors who support your Ferntree Gully Eagles Football Club. Our Sponsor can be found on our website www.ferntreegullyfc.com and on Ferntree Gully Eagles FC Teamapp. Go Gully! Forest Hill: After working so hard this season both sides had to rely on the double chance after going down in the first week of the finals. The Reserves struggled against Ferntree Gully and with the margin down to 10 points at 3/4 time it was on a knife edge. The boys kicked 7 goals in the last quarter to pull away to a 6 goal win and booked themselves a spot in the grand final to face Warrandyte. The Seniors never really looked in the contest and Kilsyth were able to hold us at arm’s length. Not scoring a goal in the second and third quarters was always going to make the task even harder. Knowing the season was on the line the boys kicked 3 goals in the last quarter, but it was too little too late. We are again left to contemplate a season of missed opportunities. We have become regular finals contenders so hopefully the experience we are building up will stand us in good stead. All Zebra players, supporters, families and friends are encouraged to enjoy the last week of season 2015 and let’s get ourselves a flag. It’s the least we deserve. The final social function is Presentation Night on September 19th. Get your tickets now. Finally, thank you to all the sponsors and supporters of our great club. Whilst proud of our achievements in season 2015 we are not satisfied and work has already begun for 2016. Go Zebras! Kilsyth: Our story of this season is one of humble
THE EASTERN FOOTBALLER
beginnings and today we will be chasing the fairytale ending. I always knew what this side was capable of, but at 1 and 4 earlier this year our supporters were left wondering would this be a year of too little too late. Leigh Thomson’s development as a young coach has been a pleasure to watch this season. Not only in the way have that he addresses the players but also in his leadership on field that left those around him no choice but to follow. Matthew Jackson and his leadership group have united this team with no player on our list being left out regardless of age or ability. Last week as I entered the rooms pre game there was an air of determination. This side’s strength comes from hard grit and a solidarity that feeds on success. Every Cougar jumper put on, is a link in a chain growing stronger week by week. With the scores against Warrandyte this year at one a piece, this will be an epic final and take a four quarter effort by everyone involved. To our players, we could not be more proud, you have carried our hopes and dreams this far,now claim your reward, let us lift you across the line. I am calling on our supporters to be our 19th man today and rally behind us all the way. 20 years ago, almost to the day, our senior side came from fourth to take out football’s ultimate prize. One cannot help but wonder, have the stars aligned for this proud club to make this the year of the cougar again? Let’s get behind one another, bring home the silverware and get back to pinks tonight to celebrate. Warrandyte: Firstly, a huge congratulations to all players and coaches who have represented the Warrandyte Football Club in season 2015. To have three teams playing on Grand Final Day is a wonderful achievement and one that everybody should be extremely proud off. It has been a fantastic season to date, a season that started in October 2014 and all the hard work has got us here on Grand Final Day. To the lads playing today, all the best, do the community, the jumper and your team mates proud. Secondly, to all that have helped out off the field during the year, a massive thank you to you all. It takes so many people to run a sporting club and to have so many volunteers makes it easier on everyone. To have three teams here today is a reflection of the hard work our volunteers have displayed during the year. It is becoming more challenging each year to raise funds for the Club and we thank all of our sponsors in 2015. To our major sponsors, Concrete Booking Agency and the Grand Hotel Warrandyte, thank you for your ongoing contributions. I’m sure the “local” will get some funds back on Mad Monday. There are too many sponsors to list on this page so a blanket appreciation to you all. Win or lose today, we invite everyone back to the clubrooms tonight to celebrate the season. Rooms will be open from 5pm onwards. We hope to see the entire Community there. Finally, we wish the Ferntree Gully, Forest Hill & Kilsyth football clubs all the best for today and may all three games be played in great spirit and showcase what local football is all about. 51
Division 4 Grand Final Preview By Dyson Baker Nothing Short of a David v Goliath battle, although Kilsyth wouldn’t be thinking that. The Cougars have been big game hunters during season 2015 and have shown they are just fly-by-nighters winning their way through to Todays Grand Final from fourth position. Led by a mix of home grown experience and talented imports, Kilsyth made their mark on 2015 after turning a 1-4 season into a Grand Final berth.
Warrandyte have been quick out of the blocks and this year have been able to put games to bed mid-way through the first term. If this happens in Todays Grand Final, expect a comfortable victory in favour of the Bloods.
V
The fairy-tale story is Kilsyth, and many people, looking for the underdog victory are hoping that the Cougars can buck a dominant trend of top sides prevailing in Division 4 Grand Finals. Warrandyte, the star-studded champion team walk into this year’s Grand Final with an degree of confidence, no arrogance but a belief that on their day they, should, take home the cup. Michael Tout’s men have earnt this respect following a season that they finished on top of the table with only 2 losses to their name. It won’t come down to head to head records, where these two sides finished on the ladder or their form during finals, this will be a Grand Final decided on pure football ability… on the day. Both these sides know what each other are capable of when they bring their A game and will need to be on their toes for the quick start, especially Kilsyth.
Kilsyth’s midfielders have an uncanny knack of being able to turn a game on its head in a matter of minutes, not with heavy ball movement and play-on at all costs tactics, but by utilising pressure in the midfield to ensure rushed disposal and lower opposition efficiency. It will be a battle of will between two of the premier sides in the Division that will all come down to the first 15 minutes. If Warrandyte jump the gate well and find themselves 4-5 goals in the clear it could well be a long day. The Cougars will win this game in the midfield, expect Jay Sherlock to be the target of some pretty heavy pressure, so to Ash Froud, thus nullifying the impact of the key forwards at either end. Flashy ball movement coupled with dynamic skill and the ability for a forward to create their own space – Warrandyte almost look like the sure thing, however, a taste for the contest, a handy ruck combination and a couple of X-factor players and all of a sudden the lean is in the cougars favour… just.
