INSIDE THE EFL Finals This week marks the first full round of finals across the league. If the last few weeks are anything to go by we have some great games ahead. Just last weekend we had: a one-point decider in netball and three other close games, a senior women’s final that nearly went into extra time, a Phil Murton girls GF decided by a kick after EFL Chief Executive Officer the siren, and two men’s footy finals decided by 1 and 2 points. We’ll make sure host clubs have their defibrillator handy at games this weekend! A topic of discussion around finals times is always costs. We don’t shy away from the fact that whether you’re the NBA, AFL or EFL, finals are an important revenue stream for all sports organisations. What is different about the EFL finals compared to most is that our clubs deservedly share in the profits from finals. Across all our juniors, senior men’s, senior women’s and veteran’s finals, some 24 clubs have hosted finals this year. Volunteers in clubs put in a huge amount of time and effort, raising important funds for clubs to help keep costs for club members as low as possible and to help invest money into club facilities. Our estimates show that for every $1 profit the EFL make from finals, about $2.50 profit is made by clubs. For this year, cost of entry to all senior men’s finals, including grand finals, is $15 for adults and $10 for pensioners. This is the first price increase in 11 years. The cost of Grand Final entry for adults remains the same as it has done so for the last 7 years, while pensioners have increased by $1. At the same time, we’ve expanded the categories of those who qualify for pensioner entry and have increased ticket allocation for clubs. We’ll continue to make a donation to the Police Blue Ribbon Foundation as part of GF entry fees. In the last 8 years the EFL Community has raised nearly $200,000, which will go towards the installation of a piece of life saving equipment at a major hospital in Melbourne’s East. Running finals is a costly exercise. Across the senior, junior, women’s and netball finals series we have expenses of approximately $330,000. These costs are made up of umpires, footy records, footballs, medals, cups & flags, Council charges, event staff including security, and other amenities. In the 11-year time period since our last price increase, our costs have increased by over $110,000, while in the same time period we have
managed to keep league fixed charge cost increases to clubs at less than half of CPI. We benchmark ourselves against other competitions regularly and know our men’s finals and GF entry prices are consistent with other leagues, while our netball and women’s/Veteran’s finals charges are the lowest in Metropolitan Melbourne by a considerable amount. We’ve kept the age of patrons who get in for free at 16 and under, at a time when most others have reduced this to 12 or 14 years old. Other than funding the normal operational functions of the league, finals revenue also allows the EFL to invest in areas to assist individuals, clubs and their associated communities. Over the last three years we have subsidized/invested over $250,000 in the following areas: Netball, Road Safety Programs for 16 and 17-yearolds, Club Drug & Alcohol and other education seminars delivered by SALT, Sports Chaplains Placement in clubs and services to help with tragedies, and participation in Junior Interleague Programs, which now includes two girl’s teams, continues to be free (only league who does this). In addition, working with clubs we have allocated significant resources in helping build awareness through partnerships and activations with beyondblue, Victorian Responsible Gambling Foundation, Fight MND, Breast Cancer Network Australia and Good Sports. In development at present is a Melbourne East Regional Australian Rules Facility Strategy. As our competition continues to grow, so must the facilities available for clubs to play on and also for programs like finals and interleague to be played at. Historically the East has been underrepresented with significant investment in football facilities. We don’t have legacy VFL or VFA venues in the heart of our region like most other leagues. Often significant investment coincides with investment in elite facilities, but with Hawthorn moving out of the area, we need to ensure we don’t miss out again. The AFL and AFL Vic are increasing their investment in local footy with over $300,000 in contributions recently announced, including improvements at Kilsyth, Blackburn and Mitcham. Local Councils continue to be the single biggest investor in sporting facilities and where we can work cooperatively together with Councils, Government and AFL Vic, significant gains will continue to be made. It’s a massive four weeks coming up. Best of luck to all teams this weekend.

THE FIVE By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt
F
inals footy arrived with a bang in the EFL this year with a pair of nail-biting finals, as well as a couple of blowouts, whilst the top two tiers finally settled on a starting order for the premiership race. Here are five things from the weekend’s action. Magpies swoop After both Scoresby and Boronia won the respective away legs of their two home and away clashes in 2018, a hotly-contested Division 3 qualifying final seemingly awaited on a picture-perfect day at East Burwood Reserve. The first quarter was almost an edited version of the whole game. Boronia showed signs of being able to break through, but ultimately the ball was parked in the Scoresby forward half, as it dominated the clearances, maintained intense pressure on the ball carrier and created chance after chance. The Hawks were made to go long down the line a lot more than they would’ve originally liked, and their poor ball use meant their defenders never stood a chance, despite the impressive performance of Jarrod Lake. Veterans Paul Chadwick (best on ground with two goals) and Marc Williams (five goals) impressed with their work rate and footballing nous, giving the youthful Boronia side a lesson in how to play finals football. Boronia looked their best immediately after each of the breaks, playing with a more direct style, which indicates the Matt Clark’s troops didn’t mean to over possess the football, they were forced into it by a well-drilled Magpies outfit. Boronia must find a way to handle that pressing style of football without flipping the ball around like a hot potato, to provide its tall forwards a chance, and give its defenders time to set up behind the ball, as the Magpies did so well on Saturday. The Magpies will be primed for another crack at the undefeated Redbacks and will be confident they can do some damage. The Magpies believe that their footy is the best footy, they just have to put it all together.
Jets, just They like coming the long way don’t they the Heathmont Jets. After last season’s inspirational surge into the big dance, the Jets would have been disappointed to be coming from the elimination final once again, however thanks to an incredible victory in a see-sawing game against The Basin, they could be on to do it once more. The Basin kicked out to a three-goal lead early in the last term, before the Jets clawed their way back into the contest, with goals from Callum Norris, who finished best on ground in just his fifth senior game for the year, and Leigh Odermatt brought it back to just one behind with 10 minutes to play. Both sides traded behinds until Jordan Haynes left foot shot drifted across the face and was forced through for the deciding behind. The Jets will take some major gains from this contest. They spent the majority of the last quarter dominating possession of the football, and running much better than the tired Bears. Add this onto last season’s aforementioned surge to the grand final and the Jets will suddenly be a lot more positive about season 2018. For the Bears, once the disappointment of this nail-biting loss leaves Batterham Reserve, they’ll look back on this season as one where they made great strides. Barely mentioned as a finals chance during the early stages of the season, the Bears have come away with a clear style of play and a committed group of players who never back away from a challenge. Twice the closest to defeated Ringwood, and one kick away from playing in a semi-final, the 2019 season can’t come quickly enough for The Basin boys.
Pioneers unlock the Hawks, Zebras gallop off The Whitehorse Pioneers have scrapped their way to a grand final and a spot in third division in 2019 after their two-point win over the Glen Waverley Hawks. It was a similarly scrappy affair to the one played by these two sides in Round 10, which saw just 14 goals as the Hawks
8
The Eastern Footballer
won by seven points, this time around there was just 13 goals as the Pioneers played the game on their terms. Once again Andrew Padbury came away from the game goalless, as he did in Round 10, whilst one clear difference was the influence of Adam Amin. Amin, who kicked six of his side’s eight goals in Round 10, managed just one in Saturday’s loss. The Hawks will rue their missed chances in the second and fourth terms, where they kicked 1.5 on each occasion, whilst their opponents piled on 3.2 and 2.2 respectively. The Hawks will come up against a rampant East Burwood side who put Forest Hill to the sword after quarter time. The Zebras kicked the first three goals of the game, and kept the Rams goalless to quarter time. East Burwood then started to motor, kicking 15 goals to just six in the final three quarters. Dynamic forward Max Wills finished with a handful of majors in a best on ground performance as the Rams got their first finals win in 14 years. For the Zebras it’s the end of the Stillman era. Three finals series and two grand finals appearances are a testament to the success he has brought down to Forest Hill, however it may be time for them to take one step back, to eventually go further forward. The next coach of the Forest Hill Football Club will need to have a thorough look at the playing list before setting his expectations for 2019.
Eagles atop the perch Just a few weeks ago there were suggestions that Vermont could finish as low as fourth. Fast forward to the end of the home and away season and the Eagles have restored a little bit of calm throughout the club, gaining the week off and defeated three finals opponents, two of them with relative ease. Andrew Ainger’s return has correlated with the Eagles upturn, highlighted by his seven goals on the weekend, whilst Lachie Johns could feature as soon as the second semi-final as they begin to get back towards full strength. There will still be immense pressure on the Eagles after their recent finals history, as we edge towards Harmit Singh’s biggest test. Harmit told the boys on EFL Sunday that Vermont hasn’t tweaked its style of play since that horror month, but have merely adapted their training schedule. Both sides who are battling to face them in a fortnight’s time have beaten them in recent history and will fancy their chances. Gosh, finals are exciting.
Lilydale deflate the miracle, Lions send a message Maybe if the Falcons weren’t quite as desperate to get a win before the finals, the Mulgrave Miracle could’ve been completed, with Park Orchards completing its half of the bargain, defeating Mooroolbark. The Falcons ended up victors by 38 points, kicking 10 goals to two in the second and third terms, with skipper Brad Lowe floating forward and kicking five. Mulgrave will enter next season on the back of a great finish to 2018 and should be one of the early favourites for Division 2 next season. They’ll be joined in Division 2 by Mitcham who will enter 2019 off the back of a footballing lesson and in slightly worse shape than Mulgrave. The Tigers didn’t win a quarter as they kicked just five majors, conceding 22. Jake Summers kicked four, as did Viojo-Rainbow, whilst Tom Gordon and Leigh Murphy finished with three apiece for the Lions. Doncaster East enter the finals series a game clear of Upper Gully and with one clear goal in mind, avenging last season’s grand final loss. With the inclusion of Viojo-Rainbow, the experience of White, Mclean and Martin and the goal-kicking prowess of Summers and Gordon, the other contenders will definitely have their work cut out. EASTLAND NETBALL REVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree
W
e now just have one week left of NetballEFL for the year with Premier/Premier Reserve, Divisions 1 and 2 to play off in grand finals this week. While for Divisions 3 through to 6 we saw some great games be played last week as it was their final game of the season and it was for all the glory. For Premier/Premier Reserve, it was Lilydale who earnt the first spot in the second grand final. They defeated last year’s runners up in Boronia comfortably, 66-51. Lilydale were led by Luiyf with 35 goals while Boronia’s Rush shot 49 goals. They found out their opponent in the second preliminary final when Scoresby defeated Blackburn by a huge 30 goals. Scoresby’s Sanzaro and Halstead far too good in the goal circle. Looking ahead, in the Premier grand final we will be seeing the one versus two clash, between Fairpark Yellow and Wantirna South Devils. On the court next to them in the Premier Reserve we will see Lilydale taking on Scoresby, both games at Knox at 8:15pm. In Division 1, Fairpark went on to defeat Heathmont in their preliminary final meaning Fairpark cemented their spot in the grand final. A steady shooting display at both ends with Fairpark’s M. Williams and E. Williams combining for 35 goals to defeat Heathmont’s Goulding and Abbruzzese’s 31 goals. Looking ahead, South Croydon will go in as favourites to take home the trophy when they take on Fairpark at Knox at 7:00pm. In Division 2, Croydon were all over Kilsyth in their preliminary final. Croydon’s 7 goals to 1 first quarter really set them up for their win, despite Kilsyth’s comeback efforts. Croydon went on to win the game by 11 goals, Dodd with 13 goals for the game followed by Higgins on 11 and Bolton on 3. Looking ahead, top of the ladder Vermont will be raring to go when they face Croydon in the grand final at Knox at 7:00pm. In the Division 3 grand final, Mulgrave Red defeated Whitehorse Pioneers, 27-26. In a nail-biting game all the way to the end it was Mulgrave who came out as the number one side in the third division. With Jessica Hoskin for Mulgrave and Amy Russian for Whitehorse displaying why they have been such strong shooters for the whole season. Earning best on court honours for the match was, Kathryn Bibby from Whitehorse.
www.efl.org.au
In the Division 4 grand final, Glen Waverley Hawks Blue defeated Upper Ferntree Gully Red, 30-21. The Hawks led from start to finish and were able to blow it out in the final quarter, proving just too strong for all four quarters. Erin Anderson led the way in the goal circle with 17 goals for the game while Felicity Hutchinson was Upper Gully’s dominant goal shooter. Madeline Eastman from Glen Waverley earnt herself a best on court medal. In the Division 5 grand final, Coldstream White defeated Heathmont Black, 35-21. Coldstream proved why they earnt that top spot on the ladder after they were able to blow the game out in the second half of their final. Emma-Lee Jakobs again the go to goaler for Coldstream with 24 goals, she was too strong in the circle for Heathmont’s defenders. Coldstream’s Gabby Keats found herself with her own best on court medal. In the Division 6 grand final, Glen Waverley Hawks Yellow were defeated by Nunawading Lions, 24-28. An even first quarter led to better second quarter from Nunawading, yet the Hawks didn’t go away and came out strong in the third. It could have been anyone’s game in the final quarter with the Lions becoming eventual winners. Maya Kolevich had a big game in the goal circle with a total of 20 goals for the game. Alyson Tran from Nunawading earnt herself the best on court medal in her sides win.

UMPIRES SUPPORTING RINGWOOD SPIDERS
M
OST people that attend a footy game take the umpires for granted – until they don’t agree with an umpiring decision that is.
However, the reality is that football cannot exist without them, and the work that goes in behind the scenes to ensure the hundreds of footy games played each week around the state is a credit to the many dedicated people that make up the umpiring fraternity. It’s not just at the top level that these people give up their time and one such entity, the Eastern Football League Umpires Association (EFLUA) is an example of this dedication. Since 2006, the EFLUA have been supporting local all-abilities football club, the Ringwood Spiders. Back then, umpiring in the Football Integration Development Association (FIDA) in which the Spiders competed was average to say the least. That’s not a criticism, just the way it was. “Most games were umpired by someone from around the home team club,” Ringwood Spiders chairman Paul House said. “The only experience many had was to be willing to give it a go. “But, the EFL umpires wanted to branch out and support the community and the relationship has grown since. “We are extremely proud of the relationship we have with the EFLUA. Our home games have been the benchmark for the last 13 years and it is due to the wonderful support of the EFL Umpires who volunteer their time. “It goes beyond just umpiring a game, as we use this to teach our players what umpiring is about, so they can appreciate just what a difficult task it is. “We’re sure the umpires get just as much out of it as our players, as many keep coming back.” Fast forward to 2018 and things are on the improve as AFL Victoria has taken over the running of the FIDA competition, which is now known as VFFL (Victorian FIDA Football League) and is the state body for allabilities football. While the umpiring standard has improved considerably, no one comes close to the EFL umpires who still deliver the highest level of quality and professionalism when umpiring Spiders games.
12
The Eastern Footballer
There remain the only games within the VFFL featuring a full complement of umpires and are the only games where the game-day ball of which is made available because of the support of the Eastern Football League (EFL) of which is presented to a best-on-ground player by the umpires – even if they’re not a Spider! This is entirely due to the support the EFL umpires bring, which is voluntary by the individual umpires who often then go on to umpire another EFL game. For the second year, the Spiders have joined with the umpires at a training session and stayed on for a barbecue afterward. It is a great night with many of the younger umpires conducting drills that Spiders players participate in consisting of ruck contests, set-shot goal kicking, boundary throw-ins; all the plays where umpires and players interact. It is a great initiative set up by Trevor Finch and the EFLUA to cement the relationship further. It is enlightening for the Spiders players to witness the amount of work and the incredible amount of planning and coordination it takes to field umpires to the 120 or so games that are played within the Eastern Football League each week. The EFLUA is working with the VFFL on ways to improve the umpiring standards across the competition and invite other umpiring associations to get on-board and support their local VFFL clubs. In addition, EFL umpires have been asked to support the VFFL at this year’s grand finals of which will be held later this month, but this will depend on the locality. DIVISION 1 SENIORS ROWVILLE: Two weeks ago we were freezing in a hail storm to last week soaking up the sun! We finished off the final round of the home and away season with two wins from a possible three. Our U19s made their way to Mullum Reserve to face off with Norwood, we started out with a strong first half but couldn’t manage to stop Norwood in the second half. We lost by 21 points meaning we finished the season 5th on the ladder and we will play Norwood again in the elimination final this week at Central Reserve. The Development side travelled to play East Ringwood and we were able to make it a couple of wins in a row to finish off the season. After a low scoring affair in the first half, our guys were able to kick away from ER and come home with a 67 point win. We finished up 4th on the ladder and we will follow our U19s at Central Reserve this week as we take on Doncaster in the elimination final. The Seniors followed suit, a slower starting first half to a massive third quarter to blowing the game out against East Ringwood. We came away with the win by 41 points which meant that we finished up 4th on the ladder for the season. We will then follow our Development side at Central reserve this week and we will be facing an elimination final against Blackburn. Good luck to all teams competing in finals this week! BLACKBURN: Congratulations to our Premier U16 Girls for taking out a hard-fought Grand Final v Montrose at Belgrave last Sunday. In what has been a challenging season, the Team carried the whole year undefeated and celebrated long and hard back at the Central Rd Clubrooms with friends and family. Our Netball Reds and Women’s Teams didn’t fare as well and lost finals to better opposition on the day. The Women’s footballers get another chance this week in a Preliminary Final v Upwey Tecoma at Silvan and we wish them, Coach Leeann “Gilly” Gill and support staff all the best. Our Futures (U19) squad will look to put on a good showing against Noble Park in a much-anticipated Qualifying Final at Bayswater and will play as a tasty entrée to our Development Team that will battle it out against Sth Croydon with the winner to take on an inform Vermont in the second week. The Seniors will need to repeat their exploits in the corresponding week of finals last season when they play a huge Elimination Final against Rowville at Central Reserve this weekend. Both teams won 12 games for the home and away season and had chances in other games to push for a second chance at the business end of the Season. As it is, there will be nothing left on the field when the Burners and 1st Yr Head Coach Brendan Allen come to play and look to go deeper into September action. Major Raffle: Tickets ($10.00) are now available for our major fundraiser with 1st Prize being a $3,000 Holiday package in Kuta Beach BALI. Only 2,500 tickets to be sold so get yours now from Mike McCoy on 0419 879 808 or Darren Adey on 0455 134 007 #WeAreBlackburn #OneClub

DIVISION 1 SENIORS
The Under 19 team played their qualifying final and came up short against Surrey Park after leading for most of the day. Today they have a second chance against Park Orchards. Good luck boys.
Our veterans won their semi and have advanced to the Grand Final which will be played on Sunday Sept 9 against Scoresby. Best of luck old boys!
Solid results to both reserves and seniors against Montrose at home.
Today both teams face difficult assignments in Qualifying Finals at Bayswater against teams who have proven our nemesis – a win for each team means a preliminary final as a minimum. A loss results in having work even harder to continue in September action. We need to be switched on from the first bounce to give ourselves the best opportunity to progress.
Best of luck to all players representing our great club – you have made us extremely proud.

DIVISION 1 SENIORS
DONCASTER: In the final home-and-away round for 2018 the Sharks travelled to Knox to take on the cellar-dwellers of Division 1 in perfect weather conditions. However, the match outcomes were certainly not foregone conclusions for either of our senior teams as Knox with a young, tall group of competitive players took each game right up to us. But after half time we were able to slip into our “mojo” with good, tight, experienced footy and break away to record two satisfying wins for the day.
Ressies: Only two goals up at the main break, the boys stepped up in the 2H to outscore Knox by 9 goals-to-4 and win by 44 pts. Best for the Sharks were Kenty, Thiely, Wilson, Jarvo (yet again and again!), Robbie C and Fitzy and Cheesy – both with 4 majors.
Seniors: After a tight, even tussle in 1Q we settled down in the second and with the skipper on fire the team went to the main break with a 37-point lead. In 3Q Knox resumed the armwrestle until late in the quarter when we edged the lead out to 45-points. However, in the 4Q the Knox dam broke ! With clean stoppage work and crisp ball movement the Sharks met every challenge – including the coach’s “scoring guideline” – and piled on 9 goals to run out 97-point winners.
In a generally even team performance there were several standout games - Onballers Captain “Chandler” and “Muscles” Mahon provided terrific drive all day, Harry “Houdini” dominated the forward line with 7 deadly goals and “The Professor” Hall put in one of his best for the club. They were well-supported by the marvelous unobtrusive footy from Fogs and Vanders who just kept driving us forward with remarkable consistency.
With finals before us, these round 18 matches were good competitive opportunities for the club. We wish the Knox Football Club all the best in their endeavours for success in the new EFL Division 1 comp next year.
So now, Sharkers, it’s September and it’s Spring and we’ve got to the business end of the season - a very well done, so far! Today, the Seniors take on the reigning premiers, Sth Croydon, with confidence in the Qualifying Final at Bayswater. And tomorrow it’s over to Central Reserve, Glen Waverley where our Ressies will play a “cut-throat” elimination final against Rowville in the early game.
Can we win them? Yes, you betcha we can - but winning finals won’t be easy, as the following stats suggest:
2018 Seniors Home-Away Win Ratio vs other finalists:
VE, SC, DO … 57%, RO … 43% and BL … 38%.
GOOD LUCK AND GO SHARKS!!

LILYDALE: Reserves The trip to Mulgrave was an opportunity to finish the year off on a high, but also to pay tribute to two absolute legends of the Club in Alfie and Macca. The game started well with the boys playing the high intensity footy that we have seen in patches this year. This saw us take a handy lead into the long break. After half time the boys really lifted a gear in what was a fitting tribute, that gave Alfie and Macca the send off they deserved. Lets get behind the seniors and U19s this week and get them over the line. Seniors Mulgrave hasn't always been a happy hunting ground for us in recent times, but not on this day. Whilst we still had a slight chance to grab the double chance, we needed to win first and hope results went our way. Alas this wasn't to be. The boys played high intensity footy for three quarters, in what was a good warm up for our first final. This week a new season starts, and lets hope it continues for a few weeks. Lastly I would like to thank everyone for the efforts over the year and lets hope we finish on a high.

UPPER FTG: Great day last Saturday with beautiful weather and a good crowd at Kings Park which saw the seniors claim second spot on the ladder after doing enough to beat Croydon. Brad Kelleher kicked 4 goals and was named best alongside Rowan Hore and Bryce Hards. The Reserve had a big win to also claim second on the ladder with Buddah kicking 6 goals and Gab and AJ named best alongside Tom Heuston who kicked 3 goals. The U19’s went down to Croydon to finish their season last week with Liam McKernan, Matty Graham and Josh Mason named best. A huge thanks to Craig Bridle on his efforts coaching this years U19’s alongside Shane Mason and Jyi McWilliam and also a big thanks to Lisa Knight for her efforts as Team Manager keeping things running smoothly. Today we take on old rivals Doncaster East and have the opportunity to book a spot in the senior Grand Final of Division 2 for the first time since 1968 and continue the success of our junior program over the last decade. The reserves come up against Mooroolbark with plenty of confidence in their ability to beat anyone on their day. Unfortunately the Netball girls went down in their Grand Final last week against Glen Waverley Hawks but the club is still proud of the girls on their year and look forward to their return next season. Thanks to Nicola Watcher and Caz Jackson for organising the 2 sides this season. The U16 girls also lost their grand final last Sunday against Glen Waverley Rovers in heartbreaking fashion after the siren but the girls have also had a fantastic year and show that the club has plenty of talent coming through. Presentation Night this year will be at Kings Park on the 22nd September. Thanks to all our sponsors who have supported us this year, please use them and mention you are from the club. Good Luck Today Upper……Go the Red and Blue

EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - R16 vs GIPPSLAND POWER GIPPSLAND POWER - 11.11.77 EASTERN RANGES - 10.8.68 Making the trip down the Princes Freeway to face Gippsland Power in Morwell, the Ranges boys were determined to give the secondplaced team a shock heading into the finals. It took a while for them to settle into the game, however. By quarter time, the score was 26 to 1, and it would have been easy for heads to start dropping. But to the boys’ credit, they weren’t prepared to give in - and set about reeling in the lead with some daring football played at breakneck speed. After Gippsland kicked the first goal of the second term, our boys responded with eight of the next nine goals until three-quarter time. With a four-point lead at the final break, the coach urged the boys to back themselves in and return home with a well-deserved victory against a contending team. However, Gippsland came out firing in the final quarter, kicking four unanswered goals to propel themselves into the lead. A couple of goals our way brought the margin back to ten points with three minutes left, but time was not on our side and the

final margin of defeat was nine points. A gallant effort against a top team, with our best footy simply too good for them for periods of the game. Being able to sustain that best footy for a full four quarters has been the challenge this year - a five to ten-minute lapse in games has been the difference on a few occasions. This year, though, the wildcard game gives us the opportunity to piece it all together when it counts - under the heat of knockout football. Best players were Kye Quirk, Cooper Leon, Adrian Kalcovski, Jack Kritopoulos, Xavier Fry, and Joel Burleigh. Goalkickers on the day were: A Kalcovski 3 J Burleigh 2 B Hickleton 2 T Edwards J Duff y L Stapleton The wildcard match is up next weekend, the match at IKON Park against Western Jets on Sunday will decide who plays Oakleigh Chargers in the elimination final. A loss will spell the end of season 2018.

One of the reasons for this is their noted goal-kicker and genuine live-wire Monica Latino. “I haven’t played before this season, so I didn’t know where I was going to be put, and I was really worried that the coach (Clint Martin) was going to put me somewhere down back and I was bit hesitant about that because it’s not where I wanted to be,” Latino said, when asked about her goal scoring prowess. “But he (Clint) gave me an opportunity to play up forward and out some trust in me and my team trusted me.” Putting Latino forward could be the best decision coach Clint Martin has made all season. Latino, a long suffering Carlton supporter and footy lover, brought her season tally to 50 goals during the weekend’s victory. She slotted two majors, putting her 17 goals clear atop the league goal kicking table. Coming from a basketball background, Monica’s ball-handling skills have served her well. She has kicked goals in all bar one game this season, and has collected seven bags of four or more. Her best performance came against Thornton-Eildon where she booted seven majors in the Magpies’ big win. “It varies really (the forward set-up), sometimes they give me space in the fifty, but I really like getting the crumbs, I love to lead, I love set shots,” she said. Latino’s set shot routine is best put as a simple one, but it seems to be working, unlike a lot of the footballers around the country. “I sort of just go back have a look and go yeah I can kick this and then I just take my time, if it comes off, it comes off, if it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” she said, showing that the pressures of goal kicking have yet to really hit her. “I tried a (more rigid) routine during the year, but it didn’t work so I just stick to what I’d been doing.” Not only is she one of the leading lights of this Donvale side, she is one of the founding members. Despite having never played football before, she has a strong connection to the club through her brother Stephen who plays for the men’s side and had no hesitation about playing for the club. “I came down with Tina (Liu) our now captain, for pre-season and there was no senior girls’ team, only an under 18s. We started preseason with the under 18’s because we were constantly told that they would get a senior team going,” she said. “I wouldn’t say I am a pioneer of the team, but I was one of the first girls and with the help of a few amazing people, especially our coach Clint (Martin) who bought down a few girls it started to build from there.” The Magpies have only had one loss throughout the season, coming against East Ringwood. The Roos were knocked out by Upwey Tecoma in the elimination final last weekend in a relatively high scoring affair, which set the Tigers up for a preliminary final clash with Blackburn. The sides have met each other one two occasions throughout the season, with Blackburn taking the points on both occasions. In Round 5, Blackburn won by four goals, 8.5 to 4.5, with a two goals apiece to Abbey Jordanov and Jacqueline Turner. Upwey’s Samantha Royce was her side’s best on that occasion, which is a common theme. She has appeared in the Tigers’ best no less than nine times in 2018. In Round 10, Blackburn repeated the dose, this time able to completely nullify the Upwey attack, keeping them to just two scoring shots,(1.1.7). This would disappoint Upwey who prides itself on being one the better attacking sides in the competition, scoring 934 points throughout the season, far and away the second best offensive unit. The Tigers have four players who have kicked 10+ goals, but none with over 17. Blackburn may not have scored quite as heavily as Upwey throughout the season (836 points), but it does have two key options when moving the ball forwards. Eliana Parratt has 33 goals for the season, including two against the Tigers in Round 10. She is joined by Ellie

Cleland who has 28 majors for the season. Upwey will be looking for some more performances from their main trio made up of the aforementioned Royce, Emma Caccetta (10 times in best) and Kiana Oates (10 times in best and 15 goals), however they cannot do it alone. If they are to break their Blackburn hoodoo it’ll have to be a complete team effort. Momentum can be a funny thing, especially when it comes to the finals, but it’s hard to see past Blackburn in this one who, if it wasn’t for some inaccurate kicking, could’ve easily found itself already in the big dance. In the Deakin Uni Eastern Region Women’s Division 1, minor premier Mount Evelyn has been forced to go the long way round after its shock loss to Vermont on the weekend. The Rovers will take on the reigning premier in Bayswater, who despite an indifferent season have the quality to send Mount Evelyn out in straight sets. They’ll have to break a trend however to do so, as Mount Evelyn have taken the points on both occasions this season. In Round 3, the Rovers really put the Waters to the sword, winning by 58 points,10.12.72 to 2.2.14. Alannah Gordon kicked four in that clash, whilst star Rover Isobel Urqhart snared a couple. Urqhart has 18 goals for the season to accompany her eight appearances in the Mount Evelyn best. Round 10 saw the Waters creep closer, but the Rovers were comfortable winners once again, this time by 17 points. They had 12 more scoring shots, kicking 13 behinds. Alannah Gordon popped up with another goal, bringing her to five goals against Bayswater for the season. She’s only managed 10 against the rest of the competition. The Rovers have four players with 10-plus goals, Katelyn Betts leading the way with 22. Isabelle Price has 13 goals and has appeared in the best seven times. It looks like the Waters will have to apply a blanket over the Rovers powerful Isabelle/Isobel partnership. It won’t all be smooth sailing for Mount Evelyn however, Catelyn Wilson has 25 goals this year for Bayswater and has an able sidekick in Julia Austin who has 12. Bayswater have one of the more even spreads across their list as well. Zoe Alston has the most appearances in the best with four, with Melinda Galt and Julia Austin both appearing thrice. Despite the impressive home and away record of the Rovers, you get a funny feeling that Bayswater’s experience will come to the fore. Catelyn Wilson was quiet on the weekend, but that could just be her saving up the goals, raring to break down a punch-drunk Mount Evelyn side.

HEATHMONT: Wow what a way to finish off a weekend! Last Sunday saw the Seniors stay in the finals race with a heart stopping one point win over The Basin. It was an amazing last quarter when The Basin kicked three unanswered goals at the start resulting in the Jets faithful letting doubts creep in but not so the players on the field. A goal against the play by Brent English sparked something and then another by young gun Cal Norris and an amazing kick by Leigh Odermatt and it was a one point ball game. What transpired in those last 5 to 10 minutes was not for the faint hearted. The ball was being carried from one end to another, it was level then there was a point to the Basin, level then a point to the Jets and then level again and as the clock was ticking down a fumble off players in the Jets forward line saw it trickle through for that match winning point! The song was sung loud and proud afterwards and the Seniors live to fight another day this time against Boronia. The DSquad were also playing finals on the weekend and having earned the double chance they had some breathing room. It was a torrid opening term in their game against Ferntree Gully, with nothing separating the teams at the first break. Then controversy at the start of the second when it was found Gully had 19 players on the field, we extended the lead with the resultant free kick for goal. It took a while for both sides to settle after this and with a goal on the siren at half time the Jets had regained some composure. It was a premiership quarter for the DSquad in the third with 5 goals to 3 and very accurate kicking display!! And that accuracy proved to be the difference after a very even last quarter the Jets came home with a 25 point win. Another big couple of games await all three teams this weekend, on Sunday the Under 19’s taking on Waverley Blues in rematch of a couple of weeks ago, and the DSquad taking on Scoresby both games give the teams a chance to go straight into a Grand Final match. Today the Seniors are in another must win game against Boronia. Good luck to all sides. It was also finals time for the netballers, with Black playing in their Grand Final and White in their Preliminary last week. Both games were hard fought but unfortunately the girls couldn’t get over the line in either. Congratulations to all the netballers on a fantastic season reaching finals in three teams with one just missing out. Next season will no doubt be bigger and better – looking forward to it. The Juniors also had another team in a grand final, the Under 12 Girls. They were up against Bayswater again, we kicked the first goal and hopes were high. It was a tough contest with neither side being able to really break through, Bayswater took the lead in the third and unfortunately the girls couldn’t get that score on the board in the last and saw the game go to the opposition. What a fantastic effort for this group of girls, our first Under 12 girls team, to create club history by reaching our first Girl’s Grand Final! Congratulations to Paul and his team for a great season. EAST BURWOOD: What a great weekend for the East Burwood Football Club with two teams progressing to the next stage of finals and the club hosting a large crowd on Saturday for the first round of Division 3 finals. On Saturday the reserves side faced Forest Hill in the second semi final at Mitcham. The Zebras got off to the better start and held an 18 point advantage at half time. From there the Rams came storming home with a six goal to one second half to record a 9 point win and progress to the Grand Final. Best players on the day were Andrew Pudney, Spencer Owen, Jack Prelorenzo , Mitch Donald and Justin Winder. The seniors arrived at the same venue 24 hours later to take on the same opposition. The contest followed a similar pattern with the Rams slow out of the blocks and behind by 15 points at the first change. From there they were never headed again with a six goal second quarter proving decisive. Five goals from Max Wills and four from Adrain Gileno showed the pair are returning to their early season form. The Rams recorded a 42 point win to progress to a prelim final against GlenWaverley Hawks next Saturday. Best for the Rams were Max Wills, Jason Kennedy, Lachie Gould, Tyler Fent, Brett Kay and the ruckman Jai Middleton. A big Thank you to all the volunteers who helped out on Saturday at East Burwood Reserve with the hosting of Division 3 finals.
