INSIDE THE EFL Over the first eight weeks of the AFL season we have already seen debuts by several of the 2017 EFL draft class. Pleasingly a number of these players have taken to top level football like a duck to water with one already earning himself a Rising Star nomination. Jaidyn Stephenson (Ferntree Gully/ Collingwood) has cemented his Dyson Baker spot in the Magpies’ line-up since Junior Football Manager Round 1, averaging 11 disposals and a goal per game. On the other side of the country, former teammate Adam Cerra (Norwood/ Fremantle) has been lightning up the new Optus Stadium. At a peak this season there were 24 former EFL juniors playing on any given weekend for AFL clubs, a testament to the determination of these footballers during their professional careers but more importantly to their junior club during their formative years. A number of these players also partook in representative football, playing for the EFL, Eastern Ranges and for some, Vic Metro. Representative football gives our players the chance to showcase their skills against the best in their age group and importantly in front of scouts for various programs. This month, 150 players across boys and girls football will be taking to the field representing the Eastern Football League and the Eastern Region Girls Football League in the AFL Victoria Metro Championships. The Metro Champs are the first step on the talented player pathway and give our best and brightest under-14 and 15s the chance to strut their stuff of the big stage. Whilst not the be all and end all to getting drafted, Interleague football has been the stepping stone for several of our finest to take their first steps into the limelight. The League sends scouts far and wide to ensure that players eligible for interleague are given the best chance of showcasing their skills. Preparation began back in September/ October last year with trials held for the under-15 girls and under-14 boys – lists are trimmed from 120+ down to the 52 per squad we take into the Metro Championships. This season, to make the most of the limited time we had available, the League invested into a two-day training camp held at Rowville Sports Academy. The camp was a chance for coaches to get to know players and furthermore start to develop a range of skills that will assist them in not only preparing at interleague level but also in their club football as well. Engaging sessions with both tackling coach Mal Bangs as well as the team from RISE High Performance set the tone early on day one. Coaches were given ample time with players to begin to run through both theory and practical game plans and tactics as well as skills sessions.

Through our partnership with Hawthorn Football Club, the League has been able to engage three players to act as Interleague ambassadors; Dana De Bont (Hawthorn VFLW) as well as Liam Shiels and James Sicily gave both groups some great insight into exactly what it takes at AFL level but also what younger players need to expect moving through the ranks at junior level. Shiels, a former EFL junior, played for both The Basin and Boronia at club level before being drafted by the Hawks in 2009. Having never played a representative game for the EFL, the now Hawthorn vice-captain spoke about dealing with disappointment as well as continuing to strive towards the goal of playing AFL football. Over the past few weeks, our teams have been put through their paces and we thank both Kilsyth Football Club and the Eastern Ranges for giving up time on their grounds to allow our players the chance to gel prior to the Championships. The AFL Victoria Junior Metro Championships kick off Wednesday May 30 under lights with the EFL/ ERGFL hosting six games across the eastern region. The competition then backs up into the Queen’s Birthday long weekend with games to be played at Walker Park, Mitcham and East Ringwood Reserve on Saturday June 9 and Monday June 11. STATS BENCH

Noel McPhee @statsbench

Lilydale FC celebrates its 1000th EFL game. The Falcons joined the EFL in 1965 into Division 2 and maintained that status for 20 years. In 1973 they came within 10 points of a Division 2 premiership and promotion to Division 1. Following the restructure to four divisions, Lilydale found itself in the lowest grade in 1986. What followed was a remarkable 11 successive finals appearances in three divisions, including six grand finals in a row and premierships in Division 4 in 1988, in Division 3 in 1991 and in Division 3 in 1996. Division 2 premierships followed in 1998, 2003 and 2011 with a couple of Division 1 finals appearances in 2006 and 2007. As well as the six EFL flags, the Falcons racked up 18 premierships in previous leagues meaning as well as being one of the oldest football clubs in Australia (having started in 1891), they have been one of the more successful. Lilydale’s most played opponents are Mulgrave (50), Upper Gully (46), Doncaster (43) and Blackburn (43). Its best record is against Wantirna South with 23 wins and a draw from 26 matches.

Nunawading also joins the 1000 match club and the question should be asked if there is a more resilient club in the EFL. Not many clubs survive five wooden spoons in a row and what is currently the second-longest losing streak in EFL history without resilience, perhaps summarised by current president Scott Cairns in last week’s EFL podcast when he said that the majority of his friends are from Nunawading FC. The Lions were a foundation member of the EFL in 1962 and whilst their honour roll of premierships is not long (2002, Division 4) they have survived when other clubs, suburban and country have not and celebrate 1000 EFL games today. They maintained their initial Division 2 status for more than a decade and played in a couple of finals series. In fact, in 1965 the Lions were a fingernail away from a Division 2 grand final when they drew in the preliminary but lost the replay; perhaps a sliding doors moment. In the premiership year of 2002, the Lions won 16 games on the trot including six in a row by more than 10 goals, and then dominated the

finals winning the second-semi by 46 points and the grand final by 93 points. On the same day, the reserves finished as runners-up and that year the Lions collected the Champion Club award for Division 4. A creditable seven years followed in Division 3 including three consecutive finals appearances

Perc James Medal

The Lions have played most games against Rowville (50), Heathmont (49), Coldstream (49), and Wantirna South (45). Their best winning ratios for teams they have played at least 10 times are versus Wantirna South with 28 wins and a draw from 45 matches (62% matches won); and Templestowe nine wins from 13 matches (69% won). They have a perfect record of four from four against Mitcham.

THE FIVE By: Matt Fotia Twitter: @fotiamatt

T

he sun shone intermittently with varying degrees of rain this weekend as we all got out first real taste of the upcoming winter. Luckily for us we can distract ourselves from the cold by concentrating on the footy. Here’s five things that came away from Round 6. Forest Hill sends a reminder. Forest Hill was everyone’s pre-season premiership favourites this season, after yet again just missing out on finals glory in 2017. But heading into this weekend’s top four battle with the previously undefeated Whitehorse Pioneers, the Zebras’ stocks had fallen. Its three wins prior had come against three of the bottom four sides, and it had lost handily to East Burwood and the Glen Waverley Hawks. But come 4:30pm on Saturday afternoon, the Zebras had given us a healthy reminder as to why they were premiership favourites back in December. Their contested ball, ability to switch the play (led by Tim Johnston across half back) and the one-two combination of Pimm (six goals) and Cardamone (two goals) up forward meant they had too much for a valiant Whitehorse side who came hard late in the final term. With countless players to come back into the Zebras’ side and an easier month of footy than they’ve just encountered, Martin Stillman’s men should be back where they belong in the coming weeks.

Vermont variety and Bulls on the re-build Vermont has only gone and added to its forward line this season. Already far and away the highest scoring side in Division 1 this season with 739 points from six games, the Eagles’ forward six is a tough one to crack. Brett Eddy has 29 goals from his six games, Andrew Ainger has 16 from four and Jake Best announced his return to form on the weekend with seven goals against the Bulls. But perhaps Vermont’s biggest forward line asset is its new forward line coach, ex-AFL player and 2017 Balwyn coach Marty Pask. Vermont didn’t wait long to snap up Pask in January. Pask led Balwyn to second place after the home and away season last year with 13 wins showing his coaching prowess and he has only added to Harmit Singh’s impressive support staff as the Eagles eye a flag in 2018. Their opponents from the weekend, Noble Park, may be in unfamiliar territory at this point of the season, in eighth position and with a percentage less than 100 but we encourage them to keep the faith. The Bulls have a great coach in Mick Fogarty and are going through a transition period after off-loading a lot of experience off their list in the off-season. Fogarty’s men have shown that their best is more than good enough, and will no doubt be more consistent as the season continues.

Kings and Sharks take their chance. Not too much to learn from this weekend of the Division 2 split round. The results went the way they were expected to go with big wins to Upper Gully and Park Orchards. But these wins were more than just four points for these sides, they hold within them precious momentum. With Upper taking on Wantirna South in a third versus fourth showdown next week and Park Orchards travelling to the Lions Den (Doncaster East, not Mulgrave), it is entering those clashes with form behind which is key. Its opponent may have a little malaise to shake off early and if the Kings and Sharks can take advantage of that they could come away with two vital wins.

8

The Eastern Footballer

Down the bottom, Mulgrave has probably its biggest fortnight of football ahead of it. Clashes with the two opponents within reach (Croydon and Mitcham) in consecutive weeks mean that the Lions should know their fate by 5pm on the 26th of May. They’ll either have two wins under their belt and be favourites to stay up, or they could be rock bottom and looking forward to 2019 already.

Big dogs to do battle. Division 3’s heavyweights all recorded wins over the weekend to keep the gap between themselves and the rest of the competition. Scoresby held off a valiant Donvale by 35 points, Ringwood ran rings around Ferntree Gully to win by 71 points, Boronia tore Warrandyte apart in the second and third terms to run away winners by 74 points, whilst Heathmont won by an impressive 149 against Chrinside with youngster Fin Brown showcasing his talent kicking eight. So what you might ask? Everyone knows how good these four teams are. Well, we could be about to find out who the best two are, as all four of the heavyweights do battle in round seven. Ringwood host Scoresby at its adopted home of Fred Geale Reserve with an unblemished record and an in-form Trent Farmer (eight goals against the Gully), whilst Boronia will do battle with Heathmont at Tormore Reserve. This weekend will give us a real indication of where all four of these sides are at. Is it as close as we think? Is Ringwood and Boronia a step ahead? How good is Heathmont’s young midfield? Has Scoresby’s recruiting really done the trick? All of these and more will be answered when Saturday comes.

Hawks sit at the big boys’ table. In recent years, the Glen Waverley Hawks have threatened to become a premiership contender before ultimately falling short. In 2016, they finished third on the table before being absolutely punished by Donvale in the elimination final, and last season they finished 10 points shy of a finals berth, despite some really impressive performances, but this season something feels different. After a tough start to the year with losses to the Whitehorse Pioneers (second) and East Burwood (first), Glen Waverley has since gone a month unbeaten knocking off Forest Hill (third), Kilsyth (fifth), Surrey Park and Fairpark all by over 30 points. It finds itself fourth on the table with a 4-2 record with Nunawading, Coldstream and Silvan to come over the next three weeks. The Hawks should hit the halfway point of the season at 7-2 with one eye firmly on a top-two spot. The Hawks may have finally gained permission to sit at the big boys’ table in Division 4.

Nunawading reserves win! I don’t usually include reserves football in The Five, but a special mention has to go out to the Nunawading reserves who defeated Coldstream by five goals on the weekend. Samuel Johnson snagged five goals and Josh Hartill got his second best on ground performance. This is the second reserves win over the past two seasons and is hopefully a sign of things to come for the Nunawading Football Club. EASTLAND NETBALL REVIEW By: Jessie Hare Twitter: @JessieHaree

N

etball EFL just keeps on delivering every round with strong displays across all the divisions. After the divisions had their shuffle around, it’s now time to really knuckle down and see just how much competition there is out there every Friday night. Starting with Premier/Premier Reserve, both Fairpark and Boronia showing why they were in the grand final last season as they still remain undefeated. Thanks to the shooting of Van Dreumel with 40 goals that led to the Fairpark win over Scoresby, 49-26. Boronia’s Rush shot 41 of their 53 in their win against Blackburn. Lilydale worked hard all game to keep its steady lead to defeat Wantirna South Devils reserve, 50-34. Mulgrave versus Norwood both had star shooters, Edwards for Mulgrave with 28 and Cant for Norwood with 30. Mulgrave came away with the win, 51-45. A huge first half by Wantirna South Devils gave it the win over Montrose, 67-31. Moving over to Division 1 which saw South Croydon show it is a serious contender this year with its win over Scoresby, 34-24. Heathmont defeated Kilsyth in a close one, 29-25 and Blackburn beat North Ringwood with Black scoring 27 of their 34 goals. After an even first half Knox was able to stop Forest Hill’s come back, 34-25. A comfortable win for Fairpark over Coldstream led by Leeson in the goal circle, 37-28. In Division 2, Forest Hill walked away with the four points against The Basin, 40-37. Vermont Eagles came up from Division 3 and came away with the win against Ringwood, 32-23. Croydon is having a strong start to its season recording another win, beating Lilydale 32-26. A one-goal win went to Knox over Norwood despite Norwood’s efforts at a comeback. Ferntree Gully was able to stay strong and come away with the win against Kilsyth, 36-26 and another one-goal win went to Park Orchards over Wantirna Devils. Division 3 saw a big win by Scoresby against Norwood, 25-10 and a comfortable win for Whitehorse Pioneers over Ringwood, 33-17. Heathmont’s strong start to the season kept going

www.efl.org.au

with a six-goal win against Waverley Blues. Despite a good comeback, Boronia wasn’t able to get on top of Mulgrave in its loss, 31-37. Upper Ferntree Gully defeated Rowville, 27-16 and in a close one Knox was able to get the win against Kilsyth, 24-22. In Division 4, Glen Waverley Hawks snuck into the top four with their win over Heathmont, 33-14. Wantirna South came into the division with a point to prove and defeated South Belgrave, 27-16. With both teams relying on one goal scorer Hutchinson for Upper Ferntree Gully and Kemp for Boronia, Upper Ferntree Gully was able to come away with the win, 29-21. Ferntree Gully remains undefeated with its win against North Ringwood, 39-26, Mitchell scoring 29 of their goals. Forest Hill defeated Coldstream, 29-22 and Lilydale had an easy win over Nunawading, 28-12. Division 5 started with a close one between Heathmont and Mitcham, Heathmont took the win by just one goal. M. Jakobs and E. Jakobs keeping their shooting form up in Coldstream White’s win against The Basin, 40-26. After a slow start, Norwood ran over the top of Wantirna South, 26-14 and a close between South Croydon and Coldstream Black saw South Croydon take the four points, 20-17. To finish out the round, South Belgrave was too good for Ringwood, 26-15. In Division 6, Glen Waverley Hawks kept Coldstream to two goals in the second half in its 30-7 win and remain undefeated. Montrose came out strong against The Basin and took the win, 37-21. Scoresby had a seven-goal win over Norwood and Mulgrave defeated Nunawading, 29-34. Park Orchards had a huge win over Ferntree Gully, keeping it to just eight goals for the game, 32-8. The last and closest game of the round saw Lilydale defeat Knox by one goal. Looking ahead, Netball EFL has a bye round on the 18th due to Interleague which gives our netballers a break to rest and recover. Round 6 will be played on the 25th and Premier/Premier Reserve looks set for a showdown between third-placed Scoresby and second-placed Boronia. No doubt Scoresby will be looking to get the upset against Boronia. Looking across the board at the other divisions, the round is shaping up to have a fairly even playing field for all the teams.

LEADER YOUNG GUN By: Paul Amy (Leader Newspapers)

H

E’S made headlines in junior football and now Ben White is making waves in the senior ranks.

White stunned the suburban football world last year when he won an eighth straight league best and fairest award after taking home the top gong in the under-17B competition. It completed a remarkable run of top individual honours every year since 2010, when he won the under-10s best and fairest as an underage player. While still eligible for the under-19s, White is looking to establish himself in the seniors. He made his debut for Bayswater at the end of last year, and his best senior game came in the Round 5 win over Mooroolbark. White was listed as the Waters’ best player to be named this week’s nominee for the Eastern Football League Division 1 and 2 Young Gun Award. Coach Paul McCormack predicted Bayswater would not see much of White beyond 2018. “He’ll play every game with us (in the seniors) and

www.efl.org.au w www. efl.org.au fl

we won’t have him next year, he’ll be at Box Hill or Casey,” McCormack said. “We’re already getting asked about him.” White comes from good football stock — his father Mick played in multiple premierships at Vermont alongside his brothers. “He’s got all the attributes, he can run a sub-10 minutes 3km, he’s a sub-three second 20m sprint, he’s as tough as they get, he would never back out of a contest,” McCormack said. “He’s got good skills, he hits targets, makes good decisions by hand, by foot, his defensive work is phenomenal, he could bring down a buffalo, he’s an unbelievable tackler and he runs both ways. “He’s great at stoppages, good in the air and he never fumbles on the ground, he’s got everything you want.” White is joined by Division 3 and 4 nominee Dale Kline. Kline made his senior debut for Forest Hill against Whitehorse Pioneers on Saturday and helped the Zebras to a 11.8 (74) to 9.11 (65) victory.

MOOROOLBARK: It was a day of mixed fortunes for the Mustangs in our last outing in Round 5 as we hosted Bayswater at The Heights. The Colts started the day off on the right foot with a 9 point win in spite of their inaccuracy in front of goal. Lachie Sinnott top scored with 3 goals while Braedon Dobie was again adjudged best. These two were well supported by Slattery, B. Batten, Clavant & Stivey. The Reserves continued their undefeated start to the season with a solid 26 point victory, despite a late charge by the Baysie boys. Sam Downie slotted through 3 majors and Lachie McGee got the nod as B.O.G. Others in the best were Westwood, N. Maxwell, Chivers, Dolan & Peschke. With injuries continuing have a big affect on team selection, the Seniors trailed all game to eventually go down by 16 points. Troy Wright continued his stellar start to the season with 3 goals and B.O.G. honours once again. James Cutting is returning to the form we know he can produce while Noonan, Kelly, Beddoes & Stephens also performed well. Things won’t get any easier today as we take on the undefeated Lilydale but with a couple of boys back from injury anything can happen. If you haven’t already done so, make sure you see Marcie to purchase your Mustang membership. Also, it would be appreciated if any outstanding Player Auction purchases could be settled asap. GO MUSTANGS!!!

DIVISION 2 UPPER FERNTREE GULLY: Today we welcome everyone attending the THF Lunch. This is an important function for the club as funds go towards the development and support of junior players and helping them in the transition to the senior club. Enjoy the lunch and then watch as we take on Wantirna South in a game that both sides will be desperate to win. Last week the seniors ended up easy winners in the end against Mulgrave with Travis Strange making his debut and kicking 2 goals. The reserves also had an easy win with Cuttsy kicking 6, while the U19’s struggled going down by 7 points. On Sunday the women’s team had their first loss of the year against last years grand finalist in Waverley Blues with Maxie Stokes kicking our only goal. They now have this week off before again playing away at Mt Evelyn next Saturday. In Netball the Red team went up a division last week and continued on their winning ways while the Blue team had their first win for the year. The Vets play tomorrow at Forest Hill hoping to have a few more numbers and get their first win of the year. A couple of close games resulted in loses in the boys games last Sunday with the closest being the 17D side having a draw with Lilydale, while the U14 girls had a 1 point win over Donvale. Thanks to Ferntree Gully Toyota for another great Good for Footy Night last Thursday, always great to see the whole club on Kings Park. The Clubs annual past players, officials and supporters day is being expanded into a weekend of activities to mark the 70th year. On the weekend of 2nd and 3rd June activities will be held at Kings Park including the reunions of the Clubs senior premierships in 1958 and 1998, St Johns Bluebirds under 14s in 1988 and U18s in 2008. We will have many teams in action over this weekend, so why not come down, catch up with the ‘Upper Gully Family’ and watch our current players in action The Club will then hold a 70th Anniversary Gala Dinner on the 23rd June; If you are in contact with anyone who has been involved in the Club, please pass on the event details - we would love to see as many old faces at these events as possible. Please email uftg-70thcelebrations@hotmail.com for more details. The King Club is again available for support this season with Peter Hards in charge or contact Andy Lee to get your social membership. Thanks to all our sponsors who are back on board this year, please use them and mention you are from the club. Good Luck Today Upper…… Go the Red and Blue

WANTIRNA SOUTH: Our last game was a fortnight ago. The under 19’s played top 4 side Lilydale and although were beaten on the day, they boys can hold their heads up high. We stuck with Lilydale for three and a half quarters, however, they kicked away in the end. This was mainly due to our lack of rotations. Our captain Nathan Palamara suffered a season ending knee injury and we wish him well with his recovery. The reserves registered their third win in a row and are now outside the top 4 by percentage. It was an even team effort, with better players being Damon Oakley, Jack Graffen and Jimmy Sarinn. The senior match was tough and tight affair against top of the ladder, Lilydale. It was goal for goal and unfortunately, we went down by 6 points. Better players were Brent Walker, Noah Jackson and Anch Papa. Today we travel to Upper Ferntree Gully’s Kings Park and meet up with another top 4 side. Upper are a big side, with a some good on ballers. It is a very important game and I’m sure that if we clean up our skills and maintain our structures, we will get the 4 points. The Devils Casino Night is at the club tonight after our game against Upper Ferntree Gully. All welcome. Our popular Ladies Lunch is on Saturday, May 26th. Please see Kathy Lang for tickets.

DIVISION 2 MULGRAVE: This week we welcome Croydon Football Club to our home ground, in what will be 3 big games for the club. After having a week off the boys were keen to take on Upper Ferntree Gully on their home ground. Under 19’s After a disappointing loss of 1 point to Mooroolbark (3rd place) and a week off, the boys were itching to go against Upper Ferntree Gully (5th place). Upper Gully had the very strong breeze in the first quarter, we held them to just 1 goal 5 so only down by 10 points at quarter time. Our boys kicked away in the second to lead at half time by 15. Our midfield and backline produced their best quarter of footy for the season holding Upper Gully to just 1 point in the third. We kept them on the half back line boundary for 8 minutes, the boys worked very hard to contain a very frustrated Upper Gully. In the last and with the wind the boys although exhausted from their work in the third held on kicking 2 goals to 3 winning by 7 points. The stand out for me was the whole backline who are working really well together, their decision making and patience coming out of defense especially against the wind was terrific. Although there seems to be 2 clubs well ahead of the pack, the last 2 weeks have shown our boys we can mixed it with the rest, we will know where we are after next weeks game as we play second placed Croydon at home. Reserves Our reserves ventured to Upper Ferntree Gully on Saturday and even though we were a bit undermanned we battled away for the four quarters. Our biggest issue has been consistency and when we apply ourselves and stick to our structures and attack the football we have demonstrated that we can be competitive with any side we have played so far this year. When we don’t do these things and particularly when we don’t man up when we don’t have the footy we allow teams to dictate the play and outscore us. I would like to thank Mike from the under 19’s for doing the running for us on the day as our regular runner actually played for us so I would like to also thank Aaron for helping us out as well. As far as our best players go our best on ground was Ned Rowland who led from the front all day and kicked half of our score. Our second best player was a young guy who filled in for us from the U19’s and did a great job at full back and that was Zac Bonney and our third best player was back from a prolonged lay off due to a hammy and played a great first game back and that was Rob Blew. Well done to all the players. We once again learn from the game and the way we need to play to compete at this level and continue to build on this each week as we gain more experience. Seniors The game started with our boys pressuring Upper from the start. This continued throughout the game but Uppers polish with the ball at crucial times was the telling factor. Within four goals at three quarter time we kicked the first goal but the last 10 mins upper kicked 3 goals to runout 8 goal winners. Congratulations to James Barlow on his first senior game at Mully. We appreciate the strong following by our supporters and ask that they support the club even more by purchasing a 2018 membership. Please see Gail for more information. Our annual ladies night is being held on May 26th, please see Heather or Lisa for tickets. Go Mully!

CROYDON: This week we travel to Mulgrave for what will be a critical game for the seniors. Last round was a tale of fluctuating fortunes with two huge wins and one huge loss. The Colts set the scene with a 100 point win over Doncaster East 18-15-123 to 3-5-23. This was followed by a 135 point win by the seconds 23-11-149 to 2-2-14. Then along came the twist in the tail with the seniors going down by 83 points to end a weird day of football. Jai Mortimer kicked four for the Colts, Thommo and Sparksy four each for the seconds and Matt Herman three for the seniors. Today is a must win for the seniors in particular so come on seniors let’s see a big lift and do it for yourselves and your supporters. Today is a special day for Matty Wilkins, who plays his 200th Club game. Well done Matty!! The Club wishes a quick recovery to Rhys Wade who injured his knee and hope the scans are positive. Croydon Football Club merchandise is now available. See Robyn Nyberg for scarves, rugby tops, puffer jackets, beanies, stubby holders and even coffee cups. The annual Ladies Lunch was a big success last round. Thanks to Bronwyn Pratt and her helpers for all their hard work in organizing the lunch this year. GO BLUES!!!!!

BAYSWATER JUNIOR FOOTBALL CLUB Season 2018 for Bayswater JFC sees the Club fielding teams from Under 8 through to Under 17. This season we continue our growth in girls football, with teams in Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 girls. The growth of the girls competition at a junior level is ever increasing, and Bayswater JFC remains a home for girls to play footy all these years after being one of the foundation Clubs for girls in football. For the boys, we have some very competitive teams taking the field this season. Numbers are good across the board and training nights have been energetic since the start. Guided by a blend of experienced and new coaches players are not only getting some great results this year, but also forming a bond within their team and the Club as a whole. It has been very pleasing to see some of the Clubs older age groups helping out with the younger teams, as well as assisting at Club events. Fantastic Club spirit! This season has also seen the launch of Auskick at Bayswater Junior Football Club. With the hard work put in to achieve this, Bayswater JFC has quickly become not only the home for our local junior players but also the home for the youngest superstars to the game. With registrations for Auskick being approx. 100, Friday Nights Under Lights at Bayswater Junior Oval is the place to be for kids in our local community. With the always appreciated help of volunteer parents, Bayswater Auskick has got of to a flying start with some big events still to come. Notably, the Bayswater Auskick Vs Bayswater CFA match is set to be huge. Two volunteer groups coming together to support kids in footy! The future is bright at Bayswater, GO BAYSIE! MITCHAM: Disappointing weekend for the Tigers with ALL four teams going down. Our netball girls lost by a solidity goal on Friday night 26 to 27 against Heathmont in a thriller. All three SNR teams wore black arm bands on Saturday as a mark of respect for our JNR President / SNR Treasurer Craig Giles whose younger brother passed away suddenly on Thursday - Our thoughts are with the Giles family. Our young under 19s put in a spirited performance against the ladder leaders going down by 10 goals with The Stingel boys again named in the best along with Powson, Irving and Antoniou. The Reserves had their chances but were blown away in the last Quarter with best players including Lee, Barro, Cherry, Nicholas, Tsolos, and Arguello. The Seniors again had good passages of play but again a 3rd quarter fade out proved to be the difference as Park Orchards piled on 10 goals in the 3rd . Jake Parente and Jessie Smyth both with 3 goals were named in the best along with Matt Gordon, Ryan, MacArtney and Lucas. THIS WEEK we are off to Bayswater to take on the Waters in what should be a hot contest; hopefully our young legs will enjoy the open spaces at the home of EFL Football. After a quick drink with the Baysie Folk, its back to the MCG of the East for The op shop themed night, there will be plenty of tunes and dancing, along with drink specials all night, Should be a real hoot. Comedy night is NEXT WEEK - Saturday 26TH of May, as the Junior and Senior club come together as one for our biggest event of the year. Last year’s comedy night attracted over 400 people and we think this year’s event should be just as big - If you haven’t booked your tickets yet, you need to do so ASAP with Macca. If you would like to donate goods or services for auction / raffle prizes please see BIG Gav - Also if you haven’t already, check out the promo video The Suburban Footballer put together for us on our Facebook page. “OUR EXPERIENCE FOOTY LIKE NEVER BEFORE” raffle drawn on the night still has some tickets available, this is a one line raffle so please purchase tickets at https://rafflecreator.com/ pages/5201/mitcham-fc-comedy-night

DONCASTER EAST: Today we welcome our neighbour, Park Orchards, to Zerbes Reserve for the first time where our senior teams will be playing for the Ryan Smith Trophy. Ryan is our local State Liberal member who has been a strong supporter of his local sporting clubs over many years and I am sure both clubs are honoured to face off today for a trophy in his name.

We also welcome all Past Players & Supporters to today’s luncheon as well as our special guests Cyril Rioli and Sam Greco. Special thanks to Dave Sowersby and Peter Monahan for organising the day.

Two weeks ago we headed to Croydon where it was a tough day for our Under 19’s and Reserves as both sides were beaten convincingly by the very accomplished opposition. In saying that the Under 19’s continue to show signs of improvement even though this is not being reflected on the scoreboard. The Ressies need reinforcements and hopefully we will see the return of 8-10 players in the coming weeks which should see a return to the competitive form we showed earlier in the season.

The senior game was a reverse of the earlier two games with us running out convincing winners. After a very tight first quarter we kicked 9 goals in each of the second and third quarters. Speaking of 9 goals I suppose I will have to mention Michael Steven’s 9 goal BOG performance otherwise I will be in line for a fine on Thursday night. It’s a shame we had the bye last week as we had to put up with Micka reminding us of his performance for two weeks!

Good luck to all three teams today

PARK ORCHARDS: Today we head to Zerbes Reserve to play one of the form sides in Division 2, East Doncaster. Many of our boys have played at Zerbes in their junior football days so it will be familiar territory for many, albeit against an unfamiliar opponent. After receiving a month’s worth of rain in a couple of days many expected Domeney Reserve to be wet and sloppy last weekend, but it was dry and firm and all four games were completed in excellent conditions for football (the U19B’s played away at East Burwood). Against Mitcham last weekend the seniors came away with an emphatic 76 point win. Prosenak came back from injury with seven goals and was ably assisted by new dad, and playing coach Jarrod Bayliss who slotted four. The D-squad and both U19 sides also recorded strong wins making it a successful weekend all round. It was also great to see so many Mitcham players and officials stay back for a drink post-match – well done boys, you are a credit to your club. Last week we also had four Sharks U17’s playing in our two U19 teams. Once again, this underlines the pathway that this club is providing for our junior players. On the netball front, our PO White netball team had a bye and the Black and Red teams both scored wins, so it was a successful night on the court as well. A couple of reminders: Premiership wine offer – don’t forget to pick up a box of our special Premiership edition Heathcote Shiraz - the price is $120 for a box of six. See Colin Caulfield or check out our website to order a box. Ladies Lunch – ladies, don’t forget to set aside Saturday 16th June for our annual lunch. Cost is $40 for snacks on arrival, a gourmet lunch and a little something to take home. We will also hear from guest speaker Sheryl Thai, founder of Cupcake Central and Co-founder of League of Extraordinary women, who will give us a talk on finding your passion and kick starting your entrepreneur journey. Tickets are available online. GO SHARKS!

GALVIN’S JOURNEY TO 200 By: Daniel Cencic Twitter: @DC_EFL

I

dentities at Bayswater simply don’t come much bigger than the Galvin name.

Its decorated family history in the Eastern Football League is set to add yet another milestone this weekend, as Bayswater captain Joel Galvin runs out for game 200. Joel, the son of EFL legend, three-time competition best and fairest winner and current club president Gary, says the double-century of games sits up there with the best in his 14-season career.

and won a premiership at as well,” Joel said. “It was a daunting experience being so little and young but it was definitely a good day out and we won by six or seven goals as well - the club had just gone through relegation as well – winning didn’t happen too often at the time.” The 2005 season is best remembered by Waters fans for its first senior flag in almost a decade – a five-point win over Doncaster East at Tormore Reserve. “A lot lo of it I can still recollect – I’v I’ve watched the game hundreds of times,” Joel said. hun “I can ca recollect a lot of the day, not so much the night. It was definitely a great experience being bei so young. “Ben “Be Williams, the captain, and his brother Gabe being 30 an 28 at the time – a couple and of others had been around th club for a while at the the tim and they spoke about time ha having a chance to win (a pr premiership) and hadn’t yet. “T “They’d been playing senior fo footy for 12 years and here I a in my first year of senior am fo footy winning one.

“It’s a pretty cool experience,” Joel said. “I haven’t thought too much about it; I knew it was coming up but I hadn’t thought too much about it until probably dad started talking to me about it and a couple of people around the club started mentioning it. “Not too many people get to play 200 games, let alone at one club. “Loyalty’s hard to find and it’s definitely up there with some of the milestones I’ve achieved in football.” After a promising junior career which was rounded out by a club best and fairest in the under-16s, Joel would find himself lining up for the seniors six months later at just 17 years of age in Round 1 of the 2005 season as Bayswater hosted Coldstream. It is an experience the 200-gamer hasn’t forgotten, made special by the fact the club tasted victory by 36 points after having only registered four wins the previous season to be relegated to Division 3. “It was against a side dad had played with before 24

The Eastern Footballer

“I thought I was going to have four or five of them, but I’m forever gratefu grateful in winning two. You realise how hard they actually are to win, the older you get.” That realisation would come during the 11-year wait between flags, which saw Joel take out four club best and fairests (2011,2012, 2015, 2016), along with the 2012 Kenneth Wright Medal for the best and fairest player in Division 2 – a feat he would repeat in the club’s next premiership year in 2016 alongside brothers Mitch and Bryce. “Definitely the premiership beats any individual award,” he said. “You celebrate premierships five, 10, 20 years after you’ve won them. “Individual awards are good at the time but you only sort of celebrate them for one night and that’s about it. “It was a great achievement and something I’ll be able to hang my hat on once I’ve retired. “It’s pretty hard to win one of them in a specific year, let alone all three (premiership, competition

GALVIN’S JOURNEY TO 200 best and fairest, club best and fairest) in one year. “I still pinch myself that I was able to do that (in 2016) and win another premiership. “I think I was the only (2005) premiership player left playing in 2016, I was the last one standing.” An uncompromising style of play has always been the 30-year-old’s trademark, where the Bayswater skipper has seen his share of gruesome injuries over the journey, including colliding with a goalpost and last year, breaking a cheekbone and missing a third or the season. “I missed six or so weeks through that (cheekbone injury) and had surgery to put plates in,” Joel said. “It was at Vermont’s ground, running off the line to tackle someone and run into the back of the head – my face just bounced off their head. “I knew it was pretty bad straight away and had surgery a week later. “The goal-post one I can’t recollect too much of just the scar on my forehead. “I can’t remember too much of what happened. I was running towards goal and got hit from the side after I kicked it and hit the post. “Padding was irrelevant, I was running that fast. “Next thing I remember I was waking up and ambulances and trainers, and blood everywhere. “It wasn’t so much the cut but the whiplash in my neck and my back and that was the struggle to get going again.”

www.efl.org.au

Despite growing up in EFL circles with one of the most renowned surnames in league history, Joel says father Gary has been a big influence on his career and has never felt extra pressure to live up to his dad’s reputation. “He’s never pushed any of us – me, Mitch and Bryce,” Joel said. “I’m pretty self-driven anyway in that department and I probably got that off him as well, but I’ve never felt any pressure under his name. “He’s been massive – I get good feedback from him and he’ll let me know if I’ve played well or pretty bad.” 200 games into a 14-year career with a myriad of honours and Joel still expresses a desire to continue to lead his beloved club in his seventh season of the captaincy. “It was a privilege when I first got it and I still love doing it,” he said. “With ‘Macs’ (Paul McCormack) being onboard he wanted me to do it again and I’ve got the urge to still lead the side. “It’s something I can look back on as premiership captain – something that dad hasn’t been, so that’s one thing I’ve got him!” Left page: Joel Galvin celebrates the 2005 premiership This page: Joel Galvin celebrates the 2016 flag with father Gary and brothers Mitch and Bryce. EASTERN RANGES MATCH REPORT (BOYS) - R6 vs DANDENONG STINGRAYS DANDENONG STINGRAYS - 13.13.91 EASTERN RANGES - 6.3.39 Eastern Ranges travelled to Shepley Oval on Saturday to take on the ladder leading Dandenong Stingrays. For a large period of the game, our boys took the fight to the opposition, and it seemed that the crowd was set for a close finish. In the end, it was small lapses that counted the most, as the Stingrays ended up stretching the final margin to 52 points. After a week off to digest the poor performance against Gippsland, the boys came out with impressive run, carry, and pressure around the contest. The defenders were aware heading into the game that Dandenong’s tall forward line would be a challenge, and they did their best to nullify their attacking threats.

www.efl.org.au

Once Dandenong were given a sniff, however, they took full advantage. Plus, the late arrival of some wind and rain turned the final quarter into a stalemate that Eastern just could not break. The best players on the day were Tyler Edwards, Mitch Mellis, Lachlan Stapleton, Ben Cardamone, Jarrod Gilbee, and Joel Burleigh. The goalkickers were: J Rossiter 2 B White C Daraio J Sullivan R Smith Next weekend’s game is our first at Box Hill City Oval in 2018, hosting the 11th placed Bendigo Pioneers.

DIVISION 3 RINGWOOD: Last week we ventured across to Ferntree Gully and it resulted in a close loss to the Reserves whilst the Seniors maintained their undefeated start to the season with another good win. The reserves had the majority of play in the first quarter but failed to convert their chances in front of goal and it proved to be costly in the end. The game was a tight struggle all day with little separating the sides and despite our boys best efforts in the final quarter we were unable to hit the scoreboard and fell just short of victory. The seniors took control of their game from the early moments and in the cold and blustery conditions opened up a handy lead at the long break. We continued to play good team football in the second half to extend our lead and with the defence again holding tight and the forwards capitalizing on their opportunities ran out good winners by over 10 goals. Today is a big day for the club as we host Scoresby at our home away from home and we look forward to the challenge of keeping our winning record intact. We invite all Scoresby players and supporters to join us for after match drinks and awards in the social rooms before we head back to Jubilee Park where all supporters are welcome. Good luck to all players and coaches for todays games and we hope to host a good crowd for what should be a good day of local football.

SCORESBY: A great day at Donvale last week. The day started with the U19s managing their 2nd win of the season. 3 quarters of disciplined football kept Donvale scoreless, and although the last quarter saw us lose our structure and composure we still came out with a great win. The ressies had a ding dong tussle with a tough Donvale side. There was little in the game all day, however we managed to be in front when the siren sounds and as Scotty says winning ugly is still winning !!! The Seniors faced a near full strength Donvale squad and while the game was full of highlights, it was tough and uncompromising. A handy 3 goal break at quarter time was held throughout the game and the eventual margin of 6 goals was due to grinding football. # from3 was a fantastic effort. This week we face the challenge of an undefeated Ringwood side at Fred Geale oval. Get along to see what should be a cracker of a game. The Netballers had mixed results with our top 2 teams being beaten while our bottom 2 divisions had great wins. Remember to try to get along on a Friday night and cheer the girls along. Friday night sees the Vets playing Sth Belgrave under lights...should be a great contest...while it might be a little chilly up the hills, the lighting will be spectacular. Remember our Gala Function (Masquerade Theme) is tonight at the Beach Hut Brewery. $30pp and a free drink if you wear a mask !! Should be a great fundraiser for the club. Also a reminder that our Sportsmans night is fast approaching. Thurs7th June. $65pp for David Schwartz, Rodney Hogg and special guests. Laughs, stories and auctions galore. Get along before the Long Weekend break. Go Pies.

HEATHMONT: The club ventures to Tormore Reseve today for round of must win matches against Boronia who’s Seniors and Reserves are undefeated and U19’s with only one loss. Certainly a day to see how the club compares against ladder leaders. Good Luck to all teams. The Hangar was certainly jumping last weekend and very crowded! Thanks to Anne Parker and Carmen Mullenger for their efforts in putting on enjoyable lunch last Saturday as we squeezed over 100 ladies into the rooms. Thanks to everyone that attended and helped raise funds for BCNA. The action on the field was good to watch too, with all sides recording strong wins. Congrats to the Women’s side who kicked their highest score and made it their third win in a row! Keep it up. The U19’s led early and were never troubled and congrats to Harley Kielblock for kicking his first goal in U19 footy! The boys certainly got around him when it went through. The DSquad, again with new faces, also hit the ground running to register another good win, and another first goal this time in his first game this year to Ash O’Driscoll. With a few forced changes again in the Seniors, it was another new look side that took the field and after a sluggish start found their momentum in the second quarter. Exciting junior Fin Brown certainly made an impression with some great high flying marks and shots at goal and he kicked the goal of the day and possibly the year to the delight of the Heathmont faithful. The Jetballers registered 3 out of 4 wins last Friday with the White team registering their first win on the Season congrats to them. The Juniors had a busy Sunday with their Pink Sports day again raising funds for BCNA and competitive games from all teams. The Auskickers were down at the Hangar early too, going through some drills with a couple of Hawthorn players, Kurt Heatherley & Tim O’Brien, who proved very popular amongst a sea of yellow and brown jumpers! As I said it was all happening at the Hangar last week.. SOCIAL NOTES: Don’t forget to pencil in June 16th for the club’s COCKTAIL PARTY/BALL bookings now open and the JUNIOR’s ‘Rock Quiz trivia’ fundraiser will be on Friday June 22nd. PAST PLAYERS & OFFICIALS DAY and premiership reunions will be on Saturday July 21st. Catch up on Facebook for all the news or visit www.heathmontjets.com Go Jets!

DIVISION 3 WAVERLEY BLUES: OK! No passing the buck for last week’s omission from the Club Notes! I was at a fund raising event for me & forgot the Club! However, based on the results from the day at Scoresby “No News was Bad News” for the Waverley Blues. Now coming back to last week look what happens! Our U/19’s R now well above the Radar on a winning streak but our Seniors winning formula has now been exposed to all members! If our Pres. goes on O/S business juggernauts for the next 12 games we could well finish in the top 5! President Steve Pewtress is yet to witness us win a game! Is this a conspiracy by the players? Anyway a great day was had by all last Saturday,(& Sunday with our womens’ team) having a clean sweep against the opposition. Thank you to the Templestowe patrons for coming back & demonstrate what our league is about, socialising win/lose/draw. RESULTS/Ladders & Future Fixtures are elsewhere in this Record1 The Ladies “HIGH TEA” (approx 80 turned up for a fantastic High Tea luncheon Sponsored by “Dilmah??”who obviously forgot to supply any of his tea products! The ladies had a great day thanks to Nicole Loft & her band of great workers! Heartening news on the field is the no. of U/19’s being elevated to get a taste of “Senior” football & all have aquitted themselves very well over the games to date. Membership to any Club is important! If you support Waverley Blues then become a Member! See Mark Playsted who diligently sets up his desk next to the “outside Bar each home game” to obtain your ticket. Don’t be embarrassed ask for payment plans but PLEASE BECOME A MEMBER for 2018. Your support is important to the Waverley Blues Development & growth. DIARY NOTE: Long way off but a day not to be missed! 28th JULY – PAST PLAYERS DAY & 10 year REUNION of 2008 PREMIERSHIP! Today we welcome Ferntree Gully FCNB to Mount Waverley Reserve. Another opposition whom we have not encountered for over 10 years makes for another great day! GO BLUES- Optic

DIVISION 3 TEMPLESTOWE: The South Belgrave Saints are our opponents at The Wharf this weekend for all 3 Grades and we welcome our visitors. The Stowe supporters will be out in force as we are hosting our first Purple Haze Lunch in the Social Rooms. Last weekend, we were on the road to Mt Waverley Reserve to play the Waverley Blues. The U19’s were brave and determined in a close fought match with only a 3 point difference at half time. Unfortunately, they could not get the win and lost by 7 points. 2 goals each to Pallozi and McLellan, BOG Pallozi. Our Sons of the Ones could only muster 18 players against a full list of Blues and battled all day against the odds only scoring 2 goals, 1 each to Jack Wilson and Sam Noble. Final margin a loss by 71 points, BOG to Taylor Potter. The Seniors were similarly tested by a determined Blues outfit and trailed throughout the game only scoring our first goal in the third term by guess who – Sam Casalaz, his first goal for Templestowe in 25 games. A final quarter Blues blitz saw the margin blow out to 56 points. BOG to Alex Brown who repelled and pressured throughout. Don’t forget our Ladies “Bling” Dinner Saturday 30 th June. Thanks to sponsors Cambridge, Jellis Craig, PSC Insurance, Emerge Health and Maximus Catering. GO STOWE. ” Tempy Footy, we love it”– CQR.

WARRANDYTE: Today we took on the ladder leaders Boronia on their turf. We put out the challenge for the boys to measure up against our benchmark. In the first quarter we got away to a flyer and even though we were level at quarter time we knew we could compete. In the second quarter they flexed their muscles and piled on the score and took a substantial lead into half time. In the next two quarters we fought hard and having a few crucial injuries and no real rotation we broke even with them on the scoreboard. Unfortunately our Reserves and Under 19’s came across tough opposition and were not playing their best footy. This week sees us against Chirnside Park and all teams are keen for the challenge. Don’t forget our Grand Social Ball at Rosebank North on June 2. Details on the website. It should be a great night.

DONVALE: Tough day for the men’s sides against visiting Scoresby last week, while our women had a good win against Thornton Eildon. Our Under 19s were outplayed in the first half, our reserves lost a thriller by 3 points, while Scoresby seniors were better drilled and more effective all over the ground. We supported the Jane McGrath Foundation and BCNA Australia by wearing pink socks in all matches and were proud to do so, Today our men’s sides travel to The Basin and look forward to our games at Batterham Reserve against what we know will be skilful and determined opposition. We’d like to thank our sponsors, especially our jumper sponsors Jellis Craig Manningham and Donvale Flower Gallery. ERCA COACH OF THE MONTH Auskick Coach of the Month April – Dale Lapham (Mooroolbark)

Youth Coach - Dan McCall (Montrose) Under-17s

Dale has a keen interest in seeing his preps further develop their football skills. Dale communicates effectively one on one with young children using multiple skill techniques as well as delivering clear and concise instruction to the group.

Dan is a master communicator. He has the respect of all his peers with the way he approaches the game and the way he communicates with the boys. Dan is always well-prepared for training sessions, ensuring that sessions include effective and engaging drills, enhance skill development, and the boys importantly have some fun.

Dale has been a great soundboard for the other new coaches at Mooroolbark Auskick this year. Dale is mentoring our new coaches, helping build their confidence and skills that will benefit the Mooroolbark Auskick program for years to come.

Female Coach - Jess Grace (Mitcham) – Under-10 Girls Jess is enthusiastic and is a great ambassador for girls’ football. She has run clinics at local primary schools, driving an increase in registrations from eight last year to 22 currently. The girls love having a young girl as a coach and she is an excellent role model and communicator. Jess is highly respected around the club for the fact that at the age of 16 she has volunteered to coach and train a team of young girls. Parents love the way she interacts with the girls and have encouraged their friends to join.

Junior Coach - Mark Shalders (East Ringwood) Under-10s

The skill development of the boys has been clearly noticeable this year, resulting in some very solid onfield performances. I’m positive the players, parents and club officials respect and appreciate Dan’s football skills and knowledge, open communication style, enthusiasm and leadership.

Female Coach – Tracey Darmawan (Bayswater) As a first year coach, Tracey Darmawan has embraced the role of guiding and teaching the wide variety of skill levels that makes up the under-14 girls team at Bayswater. Tracey gives clear direction and constant positive feedback to the young players under her coaching. She puts in the work behind the scenes to learn how to best teach the essentials to improve the girls’ football skills and game-day knowledge. Attendance at training is high as players are engaged with Tracey’s coaching style. The girls’ team participation is growing weekly with Tracey’s inclusive, fun approach to footy!

Mark is an excellent junior coach. He has a wealth of knowledge and outstanding ability to communicate this to his players to help them develop their skills and read the play The way Mark talks to boys, his patience and his encouragement is unsurpassed. As shown by the significant leaps in learning and game play we see the boys showing every week of the season.

DIVISION 4 KILSYTH: While our visit to East Burwood did not see us take any points there was plenty to take away from the weekend. The reserves who were missing some key players suffered their first loss for the season which will hopefully keep them hungry and focused moving forward this year. Gavin Nautili was this weeks player of the round with strong running both ways on the wing all day. In the main game we won what was the most important toss so far this year with a strong breeze heading down the ground. Unfortunately failure to convert lead to a lack of scoreboard pressure applied to the rams in the second term. Momentary lapses and some poor decisions quickly saw hard work against the wind undone. In the third term we fought back and put ourselves within striking distance at 3/4 time. While their efforts were something to be proud of the damage caused in the first half saw East Burwood hang on for a 16 point win. While there were some stand out performances it was great to see what new talent Hayden Lovat can be capable, taking out this weeks player of the round. This week we will face Coldstream at home and eager to get back on the winners list. Both teams are more than capable if they can switch on for all four quarters. This week also sees us host ‘Pink at Pinks’ ladies luncheon in conjunction with the breast cancer foundation. This event has been a massive success and this year we hope to finally reach the target over $2000 raised. Days like this show how tight the bond is with our local community and we are privileged to facilitate such an event. GO COUGARS

COLDSTREAM: The boys showed Willo the respect he deserved for his 300th EFL game and had a convincing win at home against Nunawading last week. DIVISION 4 SURREY PARK: Great to have the senior team breakthrough for their first win of the season last week up at Silvan, and what a win it was! Well done to the whole team for sticking together, we know what we are capable of and look forward to seeing it regularly. Chris Smith again shone with seven goals and Matt Goodings got six. Ryan Kennedy was huge across half back and Thomas Spangaro played his best game for the year. The Reserves again fought hard and recorded an excellent win, and the under 19’s also had to dig deep to keep their unbeaten record intact. Today we host East Burwood at the Panther Pit and we welcome the challenge against the form side and one of the flag favourites. We also welcome the past players of our foundation clubs Surrey Hills and East Camberwell and of course those that have donned the Surrey Park jumper. Surrey Hills and East Burwood were fierce rivals back in the day, so this clash will be extra special for many from both clubs. Our sponsor of the week is Avon Tyrepower Surrey Hills. Donna and the team have been long-term supporters of our club for which we are very grateful. We encourage all Surrey Park supporters to put them at the top of your list when you need to replace those tyres. They are located at 459 Canterbury Rd, phone 9836 2355. Don’t forget to mention you’re from Surrey Park. Some upcoming events: Saturday May 26th – Black & White Night – it’s back at the Box Hill Golf Club, book your ticket through the club! Saturday July 7th – Presidents Lunch – with special guest speaker Garry ‘Buddha’ Hocking, tickets on sale shortly Saturday July 28th – Ladies Lunch – save the date! Go Surrey!

EAST BURWOOD: Round 6 saw the Rams Under 19’s face the Park Orchards side for the third time this season. The first two meetings had resulted in comprehensive wins for the Sharks but this would be a much tighter contest. In difficult conditions there was never more than one goal in it going into the last quarter. A three goal final term would see the Sharks claim the points but the Rams boys could walk off proud of a much improved performance. Best players on the day were Zak Trotter, Jared Walls and Dylan Simonella. The reserves lined up against a Kilsyth side yet to drop a game in 2018. A five goal third quarter from the Rams would prove the difference as they ran out winners by 30 points. Multiple goal kickers were Jack Weasley and Justin Winder with outstanding performances from Yanni Griffiths, Sam Coates and Tyler Fent. The seniors featured Anthony Perri making his senior debut against a fourth placed Kilsyth side. This would prove to be a tight pulsating contest with the momentum changing throughout the game. The Rams took a 30 point lead in to the long break courtesy of a four goal to one second quarter. But this Kilsyth side refused to lie down and outscored the Rams in the second half when inaccurate kicking from East Burwood could have been costly. In the end the Rams walked off with a 16 point win extending their unbeaten start to the season to six games. This week East Burwood make the short trip to Surrey Park Reserve looking to continue their momentum in season 2018. DIVISION 4 FOREST HILL: A much anticipated game as went up against an undefeated Whitehorse Pioneers and needed to win to ensure we didn’t lose touch with the ladder leaders. The fact that the EFL media selected it as their broadcast game shows the importance this game would have on the ladder. It is worth jumping on the EFL website to watch the replay if you couldn’t be there in person. With a large number of injuries our depth is being tested but that presents opportunities for players to step up. The rain arrived almost on cue ensuring that the centre square was the old fashioned glue pot. The Reserves got off to a very slow start and although they fought back well in the second quarter were kept goalless in the third which meant it was too big a gap to bridge in a low scoring contest as they went down by 3 goals. With the first loss of the season the Reserves drop to second on the ladder and join two other sides with a single loss showing that the battle for the double chance will be hotly contested. The Seniors had the team balance thrown out following an injury to Dan Ousley in the warm-up. Joe Lamperd who had played in the Reserves showed great commitment to back up and played his first game in the Seniors. Joe played Under 17s for the club last year so his rise through the ranks has been meteoric. Dale Kline also made his senior debut and both debutants acquitted themselves well. The game was an arm wrestle early on but we were able to get a break in the second quarter with 5-2 to 0-1 quarter and looked set to go on with it. Whitehorse are a quality side and came back to tie the scores at three quarter time to set the game up for a great finish. We made the best of our opportunities to come away with a 9 point win with some great defensive play in the last term. Steve Pimm kicked 6 in his return from injury with Scicluna and Cardamone chipping in with 2 goals each. Our Netballers recorded two wins out of three with White going down to Knox by 9 points whilst The Green team got up over The Basin by 3 and The Zebras had a 7 point win over Coldstream. The Lady Zebras are in action again this Friday so try and get down to support them. This week sees us back at home and playing host to Silvan. Although their Seniors have been struggling a bit in recent weeks Silvan are always tough opposition and their Reserves are well in the hunt which indicates they have depth at a time when ours is being tested. Hopefully we have plenty of players back from injury so we can get two wins on the board and enjoy the Mid-Year Ball on Saturday night. Go Zebs!

SILVAN: Today sees us travel to Forest Hill whilst the Colts kick the day off at Park Orchards in what looms as a challenging day for all 3 sides. Despite just notching the one win so far in the seniors, the feeling around the club has remained upbeat. We fully acknowledge the challenge ahead and are under no illusions as to the task ahead but we stand united and committed to the cause knowing that eventually all the hard work will pay off. With 3 colts already given a taste of Senior footy this year, the foundations are being built as we strive for success. As a club we couldn’t be prouder of the way the boys have approached the season and the leadership shown by our coaching group to work together. Today provides a real opportunity to challenge a top side in all 3 grades and we’re looking forward to it. We wish all players from both clubs the best today and hope to see a great day of action. DIVISION 4 NUNAWADING: In the words on Eddie Maguire “What a big week it’s been in football”, these words could not be truer for the Nunawading Football Club as this week has and will be a big one. Last week we travelled up the highway to Coldstream for EFL game number 1000 for the club. The day got off to a fantastic start as the reserves completed our first win for 2018, triumphing by 31 points in a game they controlled from go to woe. Sam Johnson was fantastic up forward booting 5 goals, Josh Hartill and Macca Simpson controlled the midfield and Andrew Burgess and Andrew Eramo dominated down back. The win is a great reward for coach Ryan Dobson and his men who have shown significant improvement this year and I’m sure there will be more wins for the boys as the season rolls on. For the seniors, the boys again showed in patches that they can match it with most opposition. The boys started the game really well and were right with Coldstream until late in the first quarter. Coldstream kicked away in the second term but the boys fought back strongly after the main break. We won the third term by 1 point but that would have been more if not for some inaccurate kicking. Unfortunately Coldstream were far too strong in the final term and ran away easy winners. Paul and the boys will have plenty of positives to take out of the game and with a few players returning this week I’m sure we’ll see continued improvement from the boys. As mentioned at the top, last week saw our great club pass the 1000 game milestone in the EFL. This is a fantastic achievement for the club and one that at times has looked unlikely. The club has been through many a tough year but with the hard work of many fantastic club men and women, we have been able to continue on and rebuild and I’m sure a return to successful days is just around the corner. This week see’s our 1000 game celebration continue as we celebrate our 1001st game at home against the Glen Waverley Hawks. There will be plenty of food and drink specials running during the day. Our dedicated sponsors at Kerrimuir Butchers are bringing their smoker down for some very special roast beef and chicken rolls. And the good people at 3 Ravens brewery will be providing some great craft beers to help us celebrate Good Beer Week. Then on Saturday night the festivities will continue with our iPod Shuffle Night. $25 buys you a song and if your song is the last played you take home $500. This was a huge night last year and I’m sure it will be again. It will great to see many familiar faces around the club this week as we celebrate game 1001 and I’m sure there’s many more in the Mighty Nunawading Lions!!!

GLEN W HAWKS: The Hawks took on Fair Park at home last week, with two strong teams named and perfect footy conditions we looked to kick start the reserves season with their first win, and the seniors chasing a fourth win on the trot. The reserves took to the field, with a full side for the first time all season and woth pleanty of experinced players to boot. The first half started with some sloppy play, but patches of strong play gave us the lead going in to the half. Coach Withers gave players T.Mcmillan and B.Riddle free reign in the midfield to impose themselves on the game to great effect, with the hawks taking a three goal lead in to the final quater. S.Williams was given the job of curbing Fair Parks most influential player, and the boys held on to take the win by 18 points. Terrific games from skipper O.Wisniewski and the return of J.Wille made a big difference to the side and B.Matthews played a fantastic gane for his 200th. The seniors then ran on, looking to continue their form, with some big ins strengthening the side. We took the lead early and with a big second quater extended the lead with goals coming from many contibutors. After half time the boys kept up the pressure and took the win, with strong games from E.Pickering and B.Hodges moving the ball well and the backline held strong all day. In social news, the clubs ladies luncheon was a success, and was enjoyed by all who attended. The clubs next upcomin event is the “let’s go lunch” with guest speaker Doug Hawkins, tickets are on sale now. We now look towards this weeks away game at Nunawading, with both teams looking to continue their form. Go Hawks!
