Global policy and business leaders race ahead at the twelfth Forbes Global CEO Conference The twelfth Forbes Global CEO Conference took place on October 21 - 23, 2012, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Held in Dubai for the first time, the conference provided a high-level platform for more than 400 top CEOs, entrepreneurs, tycoons, thought-leaders and senior government officials to discuss and debate issues of global concern. Under the theme of ‘The Race Ahead’, this year’s conference examined how policy and business leaders face critical challenges in the global competition for prosperity and provided insights on today’s global risks and opportunities.

A Meeting of Minds: An interview with H.E. Mohammed Al Shaibani, Director General of H.H. The Ruler’s Court, Government of Dubai, CEO & Executive Director, Investment Corporation of Dubai and Steve Forbes At the opening night gala dinner, a Meeting of Minds was conducted by Cecilia Zecha, Senior Director, Programming, Forbes Asia, with H.E. Mohammed Al Shaibani and Steve Forbes. During the session, Steve Forbes remarked on how the US economic recovery is the number one issue in the American elections of 2012, and that policymakers around the world should pursue the right measures on taxation, spending and regulation in order to restore global growth. H.E. Mohammed Al Shaibani underscored Dubai’s strengths as a hub for global business, such as its infrastructure, ease of doing business, tax-free environment, and relative stability in the Gulf region. He pointed out that one of Dubai’s most unique offerings to investors is how it gives them a choice between operating under local or common law. As for Dubai’s future growth strategy, he said the emirate will retain its competitive edge by staying innovative.

A Meeting of Minds: HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman, Kingdom Holding Company talks to Steve Forbes In a dialogue with Steve Forbes, HRH Prince Alwaleed said he regarded the global recovery as fragile but was hopeful that the outlook will improve in 2013. He talked about the global investment strategy of Kingdom Holding, which has diversified investments in sectors such as media, hotels, financial services, technology and social media. In particular, he shared his thoughts on his early investment in Apple under the leadership of Steve Jobs. HRH Prince Alwaleed told the audience that success in business and investing depended on having a vision and a strategy to execute a plan, as well as the power to innovate and take risks. Of paramount importance was one’s commitment to ethics, high morals and corporate governance. And on the topic of philanthropy, HRH Prince Alwaleed said charity is a main pillar of Islam, and that charity should aim to benefit all of humanity.

Keynote address by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai In a keynote address at the gala dinner at the Burj Khalifa, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed remarked that the world has experienced a recession, but that he was “pleased to say that the UAE and Dubai came out of it… and Dubai is flying now again”. He shared his thoughts on how Dubai has been built on a strategy to ‘think big’, citing examples of large-scale development projects such as Dubai Mall, Burj Khalifa, Jebel Ali and Emirates Airline. He also told the audience of CEOs about his philosophy of success and leadership: “You got where you are because of determination and positive thinking, and positive thinking is always the right thing. If you doubt yourselves, then you will face failure. If you don’t learn everyday, then you are not leaders and the world will pass you by. So, we all have to learn in this life, and you have to aim high and have to reach out and catch the moon and stars. That’s what Dubai is all about. We are determined to be number one”.
