DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Agincourt Community Services Association is pleased to invite you to a conversation on developing strategies to support women and men at risk of, or leaving a forced marriage.
Any form of forced marriage is a violation of human rights and deprives women of other fundamental rights, including: freedom of movement, the right to education, the right to work, the right to be free from forced or compulsory labor, as well as a woman’s right to liberty and security of person, and right to life and physical integrity, especially if it involves battery and/ or rape. ~ United Nations
Forced marriage affects hundreds, possibly thousands, of Canadians every year. Lack of public awareness, misunderstanding of how to respond by many service providers, and an absence of comprehensive and integrated supports means that many victims suffer in isolation, feeling that they have no hope of escape. But we can change that. The conversation will focus on the following areas where systemic challenges facing those at risk of, or leaving a forced marriage have been identified: • Safety • Financial and community supports (OW, ODSP, Housing, etc.) • Public awareness • Training
