Cat® D3K2 Mulcher features durable, productive design with operator safety & comfort as priorities
New Cat D1 Dozer Mulcher gets updates to tackle tough Brush Clearing tasks
The factory-built Cat® D3K2 Mulcher combines the solid foundation of the D3K2 dozer with the ruggedly designed Cat HM518 mulcher to take on a mix of small-to-medium-diameter material in a wide range of applications, including right-of-way construction/maintenance, site development, tree management, and fire-break clearing. Available with either a conventional long (XL) undercarriage or a low-groundpressure (LGP) undercarriage, the machine works efficiently in soft underfoot conditions, on slopes, and in rough terrain. For added utility, the mulcher can be removed and an optional Cat VPAT (variablepitch/angle/tilt) blade installed.
The D3K2 Mulcher now comes standard with a reversing fan which automatically changes air flow direction periodically to purge debris from the radiator and enclosures. The reversing fan is beneficial as it reduces the time required to clean debris from the machine and ultimately optimizes machine uptime.
The width of the HM518 mulcher, featuring a 72-in (1822 mm) wide drum, is matched to the operating width of the D3K2 for optimum efficiency and productivity. Finished debris size depends on the type of material being processed and the time allowed for multiple passes.
Operator safety and comfort are priorities in the design of the D3K2 Mulcher. The pressurized cab, with 360-degree visibility, is fitted with screens and “poly-carb” windows for added protection when mulching. The pressure gauge mounted to the mulcher frame allows the operator to easily monitor mulcher performance, and the hydraulically adjustable push guard and hydraulically operated front hood provide an added measure of safety. An air suspension seat (with seat-mounted controls) reduces operator fatigue and promotes high production.
Caterpillar markets the D3K2 Mulcher as a complete model configuration, and the HM518 mulcher cannot be retrofitted to standard D3K2 dozer models.
Maybe a little big for compact equipment but too cool not to cover. Complete with its high-performance powertrain, closed-loop hydraulics and upgraded screening, the new Cat D1 Mulcher is specially designed to optimize performance when clearing a mix of small- to medium-diameter materials. Design-matched with the rugged Cat HM518 Mulcher, the D1 Mulcher clears a 188.2 cm (72 in) wide strip on each pass, making it the right machine for right-of-way construction and maintenance, site development, tree management and firebreak clearing.
The new mulcher is powered by the 77.6 kW (104 hp) Cat C3.6 Diesel Engine meeting U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final/EU Stage V emission standards. An alternate emissions package for the C3.6 is available to meet Tier 3-equivalent standards. The machine’s lower sloping hood line improves visibility to the mulching head, allowing the operator to better assess the jobsite from the cab. Standard auto reversing fan purges debris from the radiator and enclosures, plus the hinged grill requires no tools to access the radiator for cleaning.
Isolating machine vibration from the operator to reduce fatigue, the Cat HM518 Mulcher controls are mounted on the air-suspension seat. Inside the pressurized, heated and air-conditioned cab, an intuitive operator interface features a 25.4 cm (10 in) color touchscreen monitor with standard reversing camera display to help improve allaround visibility to the jobsite. An in-cab drum indicator offers quick glance of drum speed and direction to help the operator manage ground speed and mulching productivity.
Featuring cladding material in high-wear areas, the new HM518 Mulcher frame offers increased service life. Bolt-on wear plates deliver long wear life and are quickly replaced. Offering a drum speed range of 2,150 to 2,450 rpm, the drum’s 38 fixed teeth feature a single-bolt carbide tooth retention design for simple replacement. Its closed-loop hydraulic circuit includes load-sensing hydraulics to prevent rotor damage when hitting an obstruction. The HM518 Mulcher has a 78.7 cm (31 in) maximum lift height, 36.8 cm (14.5 in) maximum tilt and 25-degree maximum angle to either side.
Standard sweeps, screens, windows plus rear guard help to protect both the operator and machine when mulching. With its specially designed tractor platform, the D1 Mulcher is balanced and rugged to increase efficiency when operating in challenging applications. Contractors can choose between the conventional (XL) or low-ground-pressure (LGP) undercarriage design, offering 40.4 cm (16 in) or 63.5 cm (25 in) track shoe widths respectively, to increase flexibility and efficiency for working in soft underfoot conditions, on slopes and in rough terrain. To increase machine versatility, the new D1 Mulcher can be equipped with an optional variable-pitch/angle/tilt (VPAT) blade in XL, LGP or Intermediate configuration.
With premium tires and powerful machinery, the wheels cannot compromise the performance. Nokian Tyres offers a broad selection of premium wheels for forestry, agriculture, construction, and earthmoving work – all designed to match perfectly with the corresponding Nokian Tyres tires, complementing each other in a best way possible.
With the march of technology, the tractors, excavators, and other machines get ever more powerful, efficient and sophisticated – just compare a few decades old tractor with any latest model. The tires evolve as well, to keep up with the latest machine capabilities and even drive them forward. The same applies for wheels – their support will bring out the best in tires as well as the machinery.
“The way we see it, the tire and wheel combination should be looked as a whole – not just tire and a wheel separately, but as a complete wheel with perfectly matched properties” says Matias Salonen, Product Manager at Nokian Tyres. “Only this way we can be sure that the tire and wheel complement each other perfectly, reducing the risk of the tire slippage on the wheel, for example.”
The technical advance
Wheels by Nokian Tyres are a result of long commitment to every aspect of wheel manufacturing.
“For several years, Nokian Tyres made close wheel collaboration with Levypyörä Oy, a company with six decades of experience in steel industry”, says Matias Salonen. “In 2019, it became a part of Nokian Tyres, making the synergy even more natural.”
Besides being made to match the tires, the wheels by Nokian Tyres are designed without compromises – with premium Scandinavian steel, precision cutting, quality welding and impact and corrosion resistant double coating.
“Our wheels have some unique properties such as advanced reinforcements. The Tube-Edge reinforcement, for example, is tubular rim reinforcement that is a seamless part of the wheel, adding rigidity and longevity”, Matias Salonen says. “But most importantly, when buying complete wheels by Nokian Tyres, you get a one-stop, more manageable whole, and all the support you need from one place.”
Many Nokian Tyres wheels are also available as special Xtreme options, which are some of the sturdiest wheels available in the entire market.
Rugged reliability for forestry tractors, skidders, harvesters and forwarders
Forest is an unforgiving environment with all the sharp rocks, tree stumps and steep slopes. With the perfectly matching quality tires and advanced, rugged wheels complementing each other, the risk of wheel slippage or impact damage is minimized while maximizing the load-bearing capacity.
“Complete wheels by Nokian Tyres are bolt-on solutions for skidders and CTL machines, making forestry work more confident”, Matias Salonen says. “They complement the Nokian Tyres forestry tires with their easy installation, resilient double powder coating, efficient knurling and a choice of reinforcements adding to wheel sturdiness.”
Strength and versatility for tractors, trailers and compact loaders
Powerful tractors, heavy trailers and high speeds – agricultural, municipal and construction work call for heavy-duty wheels and tires.
“Complete wheels by Nokian Tyres provide a perfectly matched wheel and tire that can cope with the heaviest loads and high-power tractors with their high-grade steel and different reinforcements”, Matias Salonen adds. “For stable and agile gardening or municipal work, the compact loaders benefit from the same quality.”
Stability for excavators and backhoe loaders
In excavating and loading work, stability and impact resistance are important – both for the wheel and tire.
“With the Nokian Tyres complete wheels for wheeled excavators as well as backhoe loaders, you will get the most out of your machine”, says Matias Salonen. “The rugged coating, optional valve guard and available reinforcements give the entire
