A Productive Year for Forest Park & Forest Park Forever “The innovative publicprivate partnership the City of St. Louis has with Forest Park Forever continues to prove its great value for our region. Thank you to Forest Park Forever and the City’s Parks, Recreation and Forestry teams for coming together for a productive and successful 2017.” Lyda Krewson Mayor, City of St. Louis
“Throughout 2017, Forest Park was a place of continual improvements, big and small. I greatly value the partnership our team has with Forest Park Forever and look forward to our successful partnership continuing.” Greg Hayes Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry, City of St. Louis
On behalf of the Board of Directors and entire staff of Forest Park Forever, I am delighted to share this recap of the productive year our conservancy had in 2017, thanks to our partnership with the City of St. Louis and our generous donors, members and volunteers. I would like to express our gratitude to Mayor Lyda Krewson for her strong advocacy of Forest Park and our partnership; Director of Parks, Recreation and Forestry Greg Hayes, with whom I communicate just about every day about our joint stewardship of the Park; our Board of Directors, including Board Chair Tom Collins; the Forest Park Advisory Board for their meaningful volunteer service for the good of the Park; and every one of the many partners with whom we work in and around Forest Park. Lastly, I wish to thank the entire Forest Park Forever donor and volunteer family for everything you’ve done to advance our mission in 2017. The accomplishments summarized in this report are possible only through your generous support. I look forward to you visiting — and enjoying — Forest Park in 2018.

Stewards of a Treasure 2017 BY THE NUMBERS
38,000 Bulbs planted
1,852 Trees planted
71 Pounds of seed laid in the Nature Reserve
When Forest Park Forever was founded in 1986, the goal of our small, scrappy grassroots nonprofit was simply to raise funds for a few specific restoration projects in the Park — starting with the Nathan Frank Bandstand within Pagoda Circle. Our early Board members were visionaries, but they still may never have dreamed of the robust, 50-person conservancy we have become. Beyond our experienced administrative team, we are staffed with more than 20 passionate gardeners, horticulturists and nature reserve stewards, as well as professionals with expertise in capital project management and infrastructure maintenance. Throughout 2017, these Forest Park Forever team members put donor dollars to work across the Park, from planting trees and caring for wildlife to repairing paths and drinking fountains.
On the following spread, enjoy a Park-wide overview of select projects completed during the 2017 year — made possible through your support! From everyday mulching to a special wildlife project in the Park’s waterway, our team and volunteers stayed busy in 2017 restoring, maintaining and sustaining Forest Park.

A Fantastic Year of Forever The year 2017 marked the official end of Forever: The Campaign for Forest Park’s Future. This ambitious initiative, launched in 2013, aimed to raise $130 million for the Park: $100 million to expand the endowment for the Park, to ensure there is money available to keep pace with its enormous maintenance needs, and to raise at least $30 million to complete urgent restoration projects in partnership with the City of St. Louis. While we were inspired and grateful to enter the final day of 2017 having met — and exceeded — our $130 million goal, we are equally thrilled to look back on all that was accomplished in the Park because of those dollars raised. Capital project work completed in 2017 with funds raised through the Forever campaign include: • •
•
The June construction kick-off on the major overhaul of Central Fields, which will have newly oriented fields and new pavilions and restrooms The August completion of the transformational overhaul of Government and Wells Drives — new roads, 2 miles of new sidewalks, LED lighting, raingardens and more — around the Saint Louis Zoo and Art Museum The August groundbreaking on the rebuilding of Liberal Arts Bridge and improvements to the surrounding waterway and meadow
In addition, Forest Park Forever was able to fund a range of critical maintenance projects, thanks to investment income from our expanded endowment. These include fixing drainage issues, paving trails, repairing fountains and restoring the popular handball courts behind the Visitor and Education Center.
Campaign Online We encourage you to visit our dedicated campaign website to keep up with all the improvements these dollars are making possible. TheForeverCampaign.org
With a stronger endowment, Forest Park Forever was able to tackle more maintenance projects in 2017 — a major win for visitors. 11

We’re Here to Help 2017 BY THE NUMBERS
1,978 Volunteers — our biggest year ever!
14,000 Hours of service they gave to the Park
$346,000 Monetary value of their volunteer service
Day in and day out, Forest Park Forever volunteers provide a tremendous resource to the Park — from caring for beautiful and iconic landscapes to stewarding the natural ecosystems, from welcoming and aiding Park visitors to leading tours and bird walks, from documenting native plant specimens and monitoring bluebird boxes to helping with administrative tasks and providing leadership, expertise and guidance to advance and deliver the organization’s mission. The year 2017 was an exceptional one for our volunteer program, with two record-breaking statistics: our largest number of volunteers ever (1,978) and our largest single volunteer park project day (St. Louis University High School’s 600-person fall project undertaken to celebrate the school’s bicentennial anniversary). We would like to thank each and every volunteer whose service and support continue to make Forest Park a welcoming, thriving and beautiful place.
25,200 ‘Visitor Assists’ throughout the Park — for visitors from 50 states and 155 countries
40,000 Free Visitor Guides distributed
50,000 Seasonal Forest Park Trolley riders
Whether outside or in, volunteers are the lifeblood of FPF. 13

A Special Place to Learn 2017 BY THE NUMBERS
7,671 Participants across all educational programs
44,540 Hours spent in the Park by participants
95 Unique schools and organizations reached
1,455 Educators/students reached from high-needs communities
The mission of Forest Park Forever is to “restore, maintain and sustain” this great park. Through our education programs, we have the opportunity to cultivate stewards of treasured natural areas like this one — for today and well into the future. One of our best tools for sustaining Forest Park is a region that is connected to and cares about Forest Park and places like it. Our educational programs reach many groups within our community, from boy scout troops to senior citizens, from garden clubs to traditional classroom groups. Formal educational programs — including the workforce development program Nature Works and the Voyage of Learning Teachers’ Academy — recruit heavily through St. Louis City Public Schools, which we consider a high priority audience of teachers and students. We are grateful to the supporters, partners and participants who continue to make Forest Park one of the region’s greatest outdoor classrooms.
By the end of the program, I came to understand that what I’m “doing now will have a lasting impact down the road, and that’s powerful and rewarding. All the educational experiences were extremely useful and interesting. Max Nature Works Crew Member

NATIONAL PRESENCE FOR FOREST PARK & FPF Staff from Forest Park Forever represented Forest Park across the country in 2017. This includes participating in the “Greater & Greener” City Parks Alliance conference in Minneapolis-St. Paul in late summer. We funded the attendance of a partner in the City of St. Louis’ Parks Department, and our Strategic Communications Director presented on our ListenForestPark.org project during a panel about Park Soundscapes. In addition, as a nationally leading conservancy, Forest Park Forever is often contacted by individuals from cities and nonprofits around the country, seeking to learn from what we’re doing here in St. Louis. In 2017, we enjoyed speaking with — and also learning from — colleagues from cities represented on the map to the right.

KUDOS FOR THE PARK In May 2017, FOCUS St. Louis presented its What’s Right with the Region awards to 20 inspiring organizations, initiatives and individuals. Forest Park Forever and the City of St. Louis’ Department of Parks, Recreation & Forestry were honored to be among them, receiving an award in the Fostering Regional Cooperation category. Later that month, we were thrilled to see Fodor’s Travel publish a list of the “World’s 15 Most Beautiful City Parks” — with Forest Park among the winners! Placed side by side with parks in cities like Melbourne, São Paulo, Paris and Vancouver, Forest Park has risen to incredible highs during recent decades. Many thanks go to our supporters! 23
LISTENING TO THE COMMUNITY In 2017, Forest Park Forever was proud to partner with the Parks Department and East-West Gateway Council of Governments, our metropolitan planning organization, to bring community members and stakeholders together to learn how the Forest Park experience might be improved in terms of safety, access and circulation. The recommendations from the Forest Park Great Streets Study will be shared in spring 2018.

NEW FOREST PARK SNAPSHOTS BOOK Just in time for the 2017 holiday season, our team produced a picture book titled Forest Park: Snapshots of a St. Louis Gem. The book shows off some of the most beautiful parts of this 1,300-acre space — from iconic locations like the Emerson Grand Basin and Pagoda Circle to less well-known natural spots like Round Lake Vista and Kennedy Forest’s vernal pond. The square-format publication nods to Instagram, the most popular social media channel for sharing Forest Park beauty, as well as the legendary Polaroid. A map in the final pages helps readers locate where each photo was taken. The book — available in our office and at forestparkforever.org/shop — makes a perfect gift or visitor keepsake.

Strong Financial Support & Stewardship Forest Park Forever is grateful to see continued growth in the community’s investment in the organization and the Park. The charts below provide some detail about the financial health of the organization, including growth in our endowment, membership and overall support. Some data within these pages ends with 2016,
because our audited financials for 2017 will not be available until after this report’s printing. We can share — happily — that we exceeded our $3 million goal for our annual fund and once again had overall positive net operations. We will publish our 2017 audited financials, when available, at forestparkforever.org/annual-reports.
