OUTDOOR OFF AND ROLLING Six weeks after winning the state indoor title, the track team changed gears with the start of the outdoor season and the Blue Devils quickly picked up where they left off. Despite wet conditions the track team put up good numbers for the first meet and rolled to an easy win racking up 143 points to second place Petersburgh’s 67. It was the first time that a FUMA team competed in a meet at the remote single A school. FUMA had eight event winners on the day. Clyde Gross won both hurdle races easily and Denver Wright moved up to the 400 and posted an outstanding 51.76 win. Jordan Roach overcame a mud covered throwing circle to post a personal best 168 feet in the Discus and Tyron McDade was an easy winner in the high jump. FUMA distance standouts Michael Idziak and Avery Martin both picked up wins in the 1600 and 3200 respectively. The day closed out with a win in the 4x400 with Idziak, Bartsevich, Wojenski and Odenyo. With a solid win in hand the team headed back to FUMA with one burning question, “Where was that place we were just at?”
WFS INVITATIONAL ROACH TAKES DOWN DISCUS RECORD Senior Jordan Roach finally caught a break! No rain, no mud covered throwing circle, no gale force winds, just a near perfect day. The result, a near perfect throw and an appointment with the FUMA record board. Roach took down a long standing record by FUMA legend Roman Oben. Jordan’s heave of 179’2 erased a record of 175’10 that had been on the books since 1991. FUMA won the event for the second time in the four year history of the meet. The Blue Devils got wins from standouts Charlton Larkins, Staton Mayfield, Tyron McDade and Michael Idziak. The big winner of the day was junior Clyde Gross. After taking the 110 high hurdles, Gross came back to shock the stellar field in the 200 with a 22.24.
