FUMA TRACK PUTS ON A SHOW A near perfect day for Track and Field served as a back drop to a nearly flawless performance by the FUMA Track team. The 13th Gus Lacy Track Classic was a far cry from the 2011 edition which was forced inside due to weather. For this edition, the only shelter being sought was probably due to the heat produced on the track. FUMA had winners in seven events and claimed runner-up spots in six others in the largest Gus Lacy Classic to date. Coming up big for the Blue Devils were seniors Denver Wright, Staton Mayfield and Michael Idziak. Denver Wright claimed a rare sprint double in the 100 and 200 while Idziak easily won his specialty the 800. Staton Mayfield notched a personal best in the Pole Vault with a 15 foot winning performance. The 4x100 blazed to a 42.32 state leading performance while the 4x400 closed out the day with an impressive win. Eighth grader Alex Lomong won the Middle School 800 in a meet record joining his older brother as a winner of the event. Perhaps the heartbreaker of the day came in the discus where FUMA record holder Jordan Roach narrowly scratched on a 199 foot throw. Junior Clyde Gross had two runner-up performances in the hurdles while senior Avery Martin narrowly lost the 1600 in a personal best 4:20.02. The final team tally had FUMA winning with 140 points and VPL brothers Woodberry Forest earning second.

2 SCHOOL RECORDS, 90 POINTS, 2ND PLACE ! FUMA TAKES HOOVER HIGH SCHOOL TO THE WIRE ROACH MOVES TO U.S. #15 WITH MONSTER THROW SPRINT RELAYS DOMINATE A seven hour bus ride was no problem for FUMA’s outstanding sprint quartet of Denver Wright, D.J. Randle El, Andrew Odenyo and Clyde Gross. The foursome made a statement early on with a 1:29.61 effort in the 4x200 which was more than enough for victory. The debate will now take place as the fully automatic time is .11 off the 1:29.5 hand held time of the previous record run from 1983. Another performer unaffected by the long ride was senior Obi Okeyo, his leap of 45’7 in the triple was not only a winner but a season’s best. Tradition held as FUMA’s distance medley relay finished in the runner-up spot with a 10:32 effort. In FUMA’s past six trips to Knoxville the DMR team has finished second four times. The Saturday portion of the meet would turn into a showdown between FUMA and national power Hoover High School of Alabama. FUMA got a quick start in the discus with Jordan Roach notching another school record. His throw of 187’3 now has him in the National top 20. The 4x100 would prove to be pivotal as Hoover narrowly edged FUMA 42.56 TO 42.91. The Blue Devils put up big numbers in the 300 hurdles with Clyde Gross going under 40 seconds for the first time. Idziak and Martin were sensational in the 800 going 1-3 in a super competitive field. Denver Wright ran two season’s bests to claim fourth place in the 100 meter dash. Wright is the first scorer for FUMA in the 100 at VTC in 14 years. The team race came down to the final event, the 4x400. The FUMA team of Wojenski, Martin, Bartsevich and Idziak put up a good fight running 3:26.67 but Hoover was the better at 3:21.5. ALUMNI NEWS

EDDIE JONES CLAIMS SOUTHERN CONFERENCE TITLE The Winged F is proud to announce that Eddie Jones, FUMA ‘10 is now the Southern Conference Champion in the Men’s Long Jump. Jones won the title with a leap of 23’11 1/2 besting the field by over a foot. The Citadel Sophomore returned a day later and placed fourth in the triple jump with a 46 foot performance. Jones was the Brigade Commander in 2010 and was part of an undefeated 4x100 team that finished the season with a 42.24. He was also FUMA’s only individual champion (long jump) in the 2010 title winning effort. The Port Charlotte, Florida native has not lost his flair for the comeback. Jones faired poorly in his first year of track at FUMA only to come up big the following year. His performance has been very similar at the Citadel. Last year he jumped only 18 feet at a meet in Annapolis—now he is a Conference Champion! DOGWOOD TRACK CLASSIC

FUMA WINS SHOOTOUT WITH FOREST PARK 4X400 RUNS 3:25.56 FUMA got its first look at the University of Virginia’s fabulous new track and field facility. Apparently, the team liked what they saw. The team shook off the dreary day to register 144 points and claim their fifth Dogwood title in eight years. FUMA scored in 17 of the 20 events offered and picked up wins in five events. Winning for FUMA were seniors Staton Mayfield (pole vault), Michael Idziak (800) and Jordan Roach (discus). Also picking up wins were juniors Clyde Gross (110HH) and Charlton Larkins (shot put). FUMA had solid performances in the relays. In the two medley relays, freshmen Peter Lomong anchored FUMA to a second and sixth while the 4x200 scored big with a revamped line-up. It was a great team effort for FUMA considering the obvious let down from such a big effort the week before. THE WINGED F
